We found 3 critical problems with our Evo engine. We recently bought a Mitsubishi Evo VIII, and it wasn’t cheap, a cool £25,000. We’re building it to try and be a better car than Richard Hammond’s Subaru Impreza. But we find three major issues with the car in this video that could have killed our Evo 8. Our Evo is broken and almost suffered complete Engine Failure!

This mechanic needs to be on very-regularly. Everyone enjoys learning from his vast experience and knowledge.
The valve cover says mg because it's magnesium for anyone who doesn't know... and that's a hexagon.
Was hoping someone mentioned it stood for magnesium 🙌
You are correct
Scottish schools, not great ;-)

What u.mean ,what
you talking about ?
Was just about to comment on that.
He just saved his life at 2:06
That was the nicest move I've ever seen
He knows the pain
Another wrench works just the same though. And doesn’t cost any extra money or take up room in the box.
@@KineticTaco Yeah right until it slips or bends the jaw. Depends how tight things are.
11:38 Turbo Yoda is a Mechanic who works occasionally on Mighty Car Mods YT Channel.
And has his own YT Channel too. "The Skid Factory"
al also hates being called turbo yoda
@@M3PH11I wondered why McM stopped calling him that
A.K.A. Alan... a legend from Australia.
The video clip they used was Al with his face pasted over. They knew what they were doing. And since Al is retired, don't we need a new turbo Yoda
This man is knowledge incarnate. Would love to build an engine with someone as skilled as this man. Definitely on my bucket list.
Very interesting video, I could have listened to Shah for longer and still would have been engaged. Not only does he really know his stuff, but he's straight-talking, no-nonsense and no frills.
You two have great camera chemistry, really enjoyed that one 😎
I love hearing our local accent on yt video's - You dont hear the difference in day to day life but its much more apparent when you hear it online!
Biggup the croc crew - my Dad (RIP) was buried wearing his yellow crocs
Fantastically knowledgable and straight forward, pole position really know their stuff
In the US Navy we called that lever for the wrench a crows foot, used them on valve wheels to help open and close valves.
The Evo X block is not the same layout as the 4g63! The 4b11 is open deck vs the 4963 is closed deck. Also 4b11 is aluminum vs 4g63 is iron
The Evo IX also has Mivec on the 4g63..
4g63>4b11
"layout" = inline 4
@@954dsm25psi nah, 4b11 is great, and you save like 10kg on the nose
This mans enthusiasm for sharing his knowledge and experience combined with his quick no bullshit answers are just contagious
Mike I can tell you now I was so against crocs until I got bought/given a pair. They never leave my feet anywhere I go. I have to agree with the comments made in the vid. They're comfy. I'm sure you'll be converted once you get the 20k likes 👍
Quickly becoming my favorite car channel, the production of these videos without the vlog atmosphere or shotty camera work like a lot of solo youtubers is top notch.
Shah is the Obi-Wan or even Saruman of Evo Mechanics, perhaps?
Dude even did a kind and got his special wrench-leverage tool thing to help out with the bolt!
That spanner extension was smooth! But I have to mention, when I was working at a garage, I was shown (and have done it myself) how to do a completely improvised and not-at-all-safe version of the spanner extension where we put hollow metal pipes on top of the spanner to achieve the same result.
Or interlock a second spanner onto the one there.
Fasten the eye, on the one "finger".
Seek Two wrench Trick here on YT.
However you give extra leverage you got to feel it - easier to shear a bolt especially if not a high tensile bolt. I know, it has happened to me😔
or a bigger spanner on the smaller
LOVE these videos. In depth and yet to the point, showing and not just telling. If I had these types of videos during my automotive engineering course I would've breezed through it. I feel like this does for car enthusiasts what Mythbusters did for STEM fields. Keep up videos of this quality and there will be many Crocs in your future.
Is this the reason Pole Position won’t return my calls, to busy fixing all your cars. I’ve a blobeye STI to fix
Nah, they just have to fix everyone elses subies 1st. :P
🤣
Take it to Matty at mb developments 😎
Subaru Clinic is much better pole position never answer my calls either nor do they call u back
I used prosport in stock for my wrx conversion to an STI8 block. Shame they have stopped trading as Pete was a wizard
You can't use "Turbo yoda" without giving a shout out to MCM or Al @ the Skid Factory! Bad form Drivetribe 😡😘
hi , love the Snap On Tools , but please tell your apprentice to not use Chrome sockets and extensions on an IMPACT gun , please use IMPACT sockets and extensions {Black} and get some ratchet spanners on the mainifold bolts , there are great single and double flexi heads available to make the job so much easier , quicker .
The top manifold nuts on these engines when an aftermarket manifold is fitted generally don’t have the clearance for a ratchet spanner.
I really like the videos with pole position! So much knowledge and explaining in one video
When are we going to see a Drivetribe/MCM collab?
Love this! 2 people in their absolute elements! Turbo Yoda
Lovely video once again, great dynamic and just really fun to watch. Made me smile
Blimey K and N still going .That was the first thing wed change on our cars in the 90s the filter and put a KnN in and then a steel Cherry Bomb Exhaust in
Great watch Love the master and apprentice combination you guys have
I completely lost it at the Turbo Yoda reference, well done
Great video; looking forward to the next one!
I could watch this all day. Awesome content!
Glad your ok
I am looking forward to the new content 😊
That response and attitude at 17:20 would have me happily working for him for 20 years haha
Love it, make sure you get a pair of Safety Crocs Mike 👍🏼👍🏼
Brilliant video roll on the next one
Mike, the best thing following this channel is seeing you get better and better at your job as a presenter/car tv person.
top gear reboot in 10 years or so has your name on it.
The turbos on a evo 16g 18g 20g ect.. Are old tech you could easily hit 500hp with little to no lag difference with a next gen garret or borg and wagner ball bearing turbo. also turbo yoda is taken by mighty car mods mechanic.
Turbo isn't really tech, thats more in the tune/management system. Nothing fundamental about turbo mechanics have changed since the 16g.
You should get the crocs anyway... That man knows what he's about
Ah, but are they safety crocs?
That EVO it's gonna be cool. One of my favourite WRC of all time. Interesting to see how a Pro mechanic approach to this kind of project. Amazing "turbo yoda" 👌💪💨🏁
Love that this was filmed 2 minutes from my home in Wednesfield
Love the mcm nod there
This is a nice video. Reminds me of working on my car with my grandpa.
Brilliant chemistry between these two
I love that mechanic. He is brilliant.
Mg is the magnesium alloy rocker cover.
Always watching from Georgetown Guyana south America 🇬🇾🇬🇾🇬🇾
holy fu..nny moment there, I did not expect that MCM clip in here!!
That spanner extension. Far out. How did I not know that was a thing? I of course know the double-spanner trick, but there's alway the worry of it slipping. I need one of those bars!
This man is the mechanic of dreams. I would love to find someone like it go work on my Alfa.
the videos in his workshop are class
I went in the back of a Subaru pole position built and it was one of the best experiences I’ve had in terms of cars
Probably the best combo on Drive tribe, with Tom being a very close 2nd.
Cracked a ringland on my Evo engine so ended up getting it forged, RG Motorsport is the best in the business for it.
Excellant so interesting and informative
I hope the repair process goes well.
Yes. I don't want to be let down at all. Because this was big big learning curve
seeing custom made tools in a mechanic shop makes me very happy there's always a story behind them
I'd go with a MHI upgrade turbo from Ross Sport and some Jun 264 cams. Should see you in mid 400s or closer to 500 depending on how much boost you want to run.
Liked, just for the crocs
I'm interested to see what turbo they go with.
One of your best episodes ever
You dont need a special lever bar, just put the ring end of another spanner onto the open end of the spanner your using!
I need one of those wrench extenders now.
Just saying….
You earn the title of Yoda for reason.
This guy is on point.
What’s happening with the BMW M5 engine MX5?
Surgeons dont wear Crocs for nothing
12:41 Magnesium ?
Yep
I built Martin the Subaru in Forza Motorsports(xbox racing game) To the best of my ability. It had 540 hp and weighed about the same as Martin as well. I look forward to seeing this build so I can do the same with an Evo I bought in the same game. I know it isn't the same as driving them for real, but bone stock in the game I liked the way the Evo Drove much better then the Subaru. Once I got The Subaru built up as Richard had, It was a much better vehicle, Though to be fair I did feel like it was overpowered. Makes me think I'm going to like the Evo better after this build also.
The only problem I have with the crocs in that setting is that Health and Safety Executive (HSE)requires you to have steeltoe or composite toe in that type of shop.tread carefully with public post like this one.
I had a evo 8 built for 1200bhp,2.35 stroker twin scroll coil on plug 5 speed evo 9 rs rear diff, the best head gasket id say would be commeric
Please be sure to show the engine build in detail, including gapping the rings, ring gap sizes with explanations etc.
I’ve never taken anyone who wears crocs seriously until now 🤣💪
Yep
Devin Niemela can attest to that!
Uhhh, whut? The whole discussion about changing direction is some serious highdeas there. The evo doesn't change directions for the power it sends to the front wheels, it changes power direction twice for the rear wheels. A subaru awd has a dirction change once for both the front and rear wheels. It's the same number of direction changes. If he's implying the subaru doesn't have layshafts in it's transmission he's terribly mistaken... the architecture of both vehicles is fine. Neither is fundamentally flawed or causes any unreliability. In both cases their unreliability comes from the detailed design of the components themselves. Mostly the gears, synchros, and stiffness of the housings.
Glad someone said it. I was thinking that was nonsense as well
This car is in a better state than what James put his Evo through. So it's not broken and you should be ashamed for calling it as such! XD
The Evo is the one car that can come back from anything.
He IS the Brit Turbo Yoda!
Liked to see Mike in yellow Crocs.
Just added that wrench extender to my cart. Awesome tool.
Where can I find it?
@@HowMuchSignalAmazon. I searched for “wrench breaker bar”, and there it was.
I feel like 380-450 is the perfect power for EVO’s 7,8,9 street/occasional track setup. It’s meant to be a mid RPM engine from the start. Anything over that is uselless, costly and less pleasant to drive.
Eva is sure to be rescued in the hands of Shah!! Just as he did for Martin 😀
It’s a well known fact that the holes in Crocs are for letting your dignity out.
I love these types of videos with yoda lol
1:37 you guys should try use artec manifold
22:58 I don't understand people leaving issues as is, especially when they are into cars.
The stock airbox is better for performance
I own a lancer. Not evo. Always blown away how simple and well designed the car is verses
Other cars.
Am I the only one waiting for more Brera content?
Just love that car!
Appropriate turbo size is a real thing, you can put an utterly enormous turbo on an engine to make huge peak power numbers but if the engine is too small to drive the turbo you're going to end up with a laggy mess unless it's on track/drag racing etc.
Top bloke is engine man 👍
They are going to go with a stock evo 9 turbo or hybrid version on the evo 9 turbo. 80 series turbo. 10.5 hot side slightly bigger.
FP red turbo and manifold. Bigger injectors and 525lph pump. Pretty easy 500whp with zero loss of driveability.
@2:45, have you never heard of the double wrench method? lol
What a great guy
Any man willing to wear crocs on camera (who isn't a hipster or a hippy) has my respect 😂
I would love to hear why head gaskets on evos are always an issue, some sort of design flaw?
Will you guys be taking this to the Drivetribe live event?
Give em a chance
Absolutely!
Crocs. The footwear choice of professional engine builders everywhere.
I want to built a car with this man. He's so nice.
I had an Evo 8 for 11 years, which was immaculate when sold, I knew another person who had one 6 months newer and the thing was an absolute mess. They're great cars, but you cannot skip the huge amount maintenance required, which unfortunately a lot of people that buy these cars do. I'd never buy another now, as I know people don't spend the money on maintenance
Mike where is the link for that marvelous wrench extension tool?
did both these guys just have their minds blown from a lever bar? LOL
Brummy Yoda is awesome.
Can’t blame Hammond this time 😂
