Very interesting video, I could have listened to Shah for longer and still would have been engaged. Not only does he really know his stuff, but he's straight-talking, no-nonsense and no frills.
Mike I can tell you now I was so against crocs until I got bought/given a pair. They never leave my feet anywhere I go. I have to agree with the comments made in the vid. They're comfy. I'm sure you'll be converted once you get the 20k likes 👍
Quickly becoming my favorite car channel, the production of these videos without the vlog atmosphere or shotty camera work like a lot of solo youtubers is top notch.
LOVE these videos. In depth and yet to the point, showing and not just telling. If I had these types of videos during my automotive engineering course I would've breezed through it. I feel like this does for car enthusiasts what Mythbusters did for STEM fields. Keep up videos of this quality and there will be many Crocs in your future.
That spanner extension was smooth! But I have to mention, when I was working at a garage, I was shown (and have done it myself) how to do a completely improvised and not-at-all-safe version of the spanner extension where we put hollow metal pipes on top of the spanner to achieve the same result.
Blimey K and N still going .That was the first thing wed change on our cars in the 90s the filter and put a KnN in and then a steel Cherry Bomb Exhaust in
Shah is the Obi-Wan or even Saruman of Evo Mechanics, perhaps? Dude even did a kind and got his special wrench-leverage tool thing to help out with the bolt!
hi , love the Snap On Tools , but please tell your apprentice to not use Chrome sockets and extensions on an IMPACT gun , please use IMPACT sockets and extensions {Black} and get some ratchet spanners on the mainifold bolts , there are great single and double flexi heads available to make the job so much easier , quicker .
Uhhh, whut? The whole discussion about changing direction is some serious highdeas there. The evo doesn't change directions for the power it sends to the front wheels, it changes power direction twice for the rear wheels. A subaru awd has a dirction change once for both the front and rear wheels. It's the same number of direction changes. If he's implying the subaru doesn't have layshafts in it's transmission he's terribly mistaken... the architecture of both vehicles is fine. Neither is fundamentally flawed or causes any unreliability. In both cases their unreliability comes from the detailed design of the components themselves. Mostly the gears, synchros, and stiffness of the housings.
I think he was just talking about general terms when saying that the direction changes are the points of failure. Based on what you just said, he's not wrong, just less specific with what causes the failures. I think he's basically just explaining the downsides of the horizontal engine layouts vs longitudinal.
That EVO it's gonna be cool. One of my favourite WRC of all time. Interesting to see how a Pro mechanic approach to this kind of project. Amazing "turbo yoda" 👌💪💨🏁
This car is in a better state than what James put his Evo through. So it's not broken and you should be ashamed for calling it as such! XD The Evo is the one car that can come back from anything.
The turbos on a evo 16g 18g 20g ect.. Are old tech you could easily hit 500hp with little to no lag difference with a next gen garret or borg and wagner ball bearing turbo. also turbo yoda is taken by mighty car mods mechanic.
Appropriate turbo size is a real thing, you can put an utterly enormous turbo on an engine to make huge peak power numbers but if the engine is too small to drive the turbo you're going to end up with a laggy mess unless it's on track/drag racing etc.
I had an Evo 8 for 11 years, which was immaculate when sold, I knew another person who had one 6 months newer and the thing was an absolute mess. They're great cars, but you cannot skip the huge amount maintenance required, which unfortunately a lot of people that buy these cars do. I'd never buy another now, as I know people don't spend the money on maintenance
Mike, the best thing following this channel is seeing you get better and better at your job as a presenter/car tv person. top gear reboot in 10 years or so has your name on it.
Mg, the valve covers on the EVO are Magnesium, it’s light but so is Aluminum, and though when magnesium burns it does so with a white hot flame and gives off harmful MgO smoke. Magnesium takes a very hot open flame to begin to burn and nothing under the hood will get that hot to ignite or affect the Mg!!
The only problem I have with the crocs in that setting is that Health and Safety Executive (HSE)requires you to have steeltoe or composite toe in that type of shop.tread carefully with public post like this one.
I feel like 380-450 is the perfect power for EVO’s 7,8,9 street/occasional track setup. It’s meant to be a mid RPM engine from the start. Anything over that is uselless, costly and less pleasant to drive.
I built Martin the Subaru in Forza Motorsports(xbox racing game) To the best of my ability. It had 540 hp and weighed about the same as Martin as well. I look forward to seeing this build so I can do the same with an Evo I bought in the same game. I know it isn't the same as driving them for real, but bone stock in the game I liked the way the Evo Drove much better then the Subaru. Once I got The Subaru built up as Richard had, It was a much better vehicle, Though to be fair I did feel like it was overpowered. Makes me think I'm going to like the Evo better after this build also.
I'd go with a MHI upgrade turbo from Ross Sport and some Jun 264 cams. Should see you in mid 400s or closer to 500 depending on how much boost you want to run.
Simion noris is a fool is he his engines run reliably at 1000bhp plus certainly wouldn't call him a fool! And come on guys you dont no what mg means lol.
That spanner extension. Far out. How did I not know that was a thing? I of course know the double-spanner trick, but there's alway the worry of it slipping. I need one of those bars!
440hp? Crank or Wheel? Which new turbo? OEM? Or stock frame replacement? FP Green 500whp, 57 lb/min FP Red 525whp, 61 lb/min FP Black 600whp, 71 lb/min Which injectors? Which fuel pump? Needs a cast exhaust manifold and air box snorkel to direct air towards the air intake filter.. Clutch upgrade? ACT monoloc?
You obvs don't watch Mightycarmods cause you'd never lie and say a K&N filter will increase horsepower because that's not always the case. They tested it with an industry expert and it lost horsepower on one particular car. Also, the MCM boys already have a 'Turbo Yoda' - Alan Butler from The Skid Factory. Maybe come up with your own creative nickname for your amazing dude, might I suggest as an option 'Turbo Bacon' cause he reminds me of Bacon from Lock Stock.
Please be sure to show the engine build in detail, including gapping the rings, ring gap sizes with explanations etc. I’ve never taken anyone who wears crocs seriously until now 🤣💪
you dont see alot of them becasue they never blow up lol...4g63s are tanks and they can take so much damage its ridiculous.. i ran mine on low oil pressure for two weeks (kinked oil line)... ran fine, took it apart and the crank was junk... that was two years after the line kinked... a buddy of mine had rod knock and ran it for a few more days, changed out the bearing and ran the engine for years after...4g63, the cast pistons on stock rods will handle 550HP reliably, subaru you cant
This mechanic needs to be on very-regularly. Everyone enjoys learning from his vast experience and knowledge.
He just saved his life at 2:06
That was the nicest move I've ever seen
He knows the pain
Another wrench works just the same though. And doesn’t cost any extra money or take up room in the box.
@@KineticTaco Yeah right until it slips or bends the jaw. Depends how tight things are.

The valve cover says mg because it's magnesium for anyone who doesn't know... and that's a hexagon.
Was hoping someone mentioned it stood for magnesium 🙌
You are correct
Scottish schools, not great ;-)

Was just about to comment on that.
11:38 Turbo Yoda is a Mechanic who works occasionally on Mighty Car Mods YT Channel.
And has his own YT Channel too. "The Skid Factory"
al also hates being called turbo yoda
@@M3PH11I wondered why McM stopped calling him that

Fantastically knowledgable and straight forward, pole position really know their stuff
In the US Navy we called that lever for the wrench a crows foot, used them on valve wheels to help open and close valves.
I love hearing our local accent on yt video's - You dont hear the difference in day to day life but its much more apparent when you hear it online!
You two have great camera chemistry, really enjoyed that one 😎

Fasten the eye, on the one "finger".
Seek Two wrench Trick here on YT.
However you give extra leverage you got to feel it - easier to shear a bolt especially if not a high tensile bolt. I know, it has happened to me😔
or a bigger spanner on the smaller
The Evo X block is not the same layout as the 4g63! The 4b11 is open deck vs the 4963 is closed deck. Also 4b11 is aluminum vs 4g63 is iron
The Evo IX also has Mivec on the 4g63..
4g63>4b11
"layout" = inline 4

The top manifold nuts on these engines when an aftermarket manifold is fitted generally don’t have the clearance for a ratchet spanner.
That response and attitude at 17:20 would have me happily working for him for 20 years haha
FP red turbo and manifold. Bigger injectors and 525lph pump. Pretty easy 500whp with zero loss of driveability.

Turbo isn't really tech, thats more in the tune/management system. Nothing fundamental about turbo mechanics have changed since the 16g.
Appropriate turbo size is a real thing, you can put an utterly enormous turbo on an engine to make huge peak power numbers but if the engine is too small to drive the turbo you're going to end up with a laggy mess unless it's on track/drag racing etc.
Cracked a ringland on my Evo engine so ended up getting it forged, RG Motorsport is the best in the business for it.
