@Pappy Van Winkle He was making a point very badly. This scene is two cut together. In the shot on Tony/James Bobby was actually wearing a strap on to elicit real laughter from James.
Fun fact the guy who played Bobny walked in with a big black dildo to make James laugh. James had seen the hunting outfit the day before and said that Steve (Bobby) had better make him laugh tomorrow so he asked one of the prop guys to get him and dildo and this was James reaction
+Rampage Clover Funny thing is that the guy who plays Bobby actually, unkowingly to Gandolfini before hand, entered the room holding a huge dildo. James laugh is genuine! 5:35 minutes in on this clip: "James Gandolfini Tribute to a Friend (Subtitulado Español)", that's available on youtube, you can hear for yourself. He talks about that scene as one of the funniest moments in shooting The Sopranos.
I think it's a great example of the show's writing that years after this, it is revealed that Bobby is an experienced, serious, and very skilled hunter (to the point that he hunts with a bow and a arrow), which explains why he has the camo gear..
James Gandolfini had that infectious laugh. The kind that loosened everyone up, and put a smile on their face or made them laugh along with him. Rest in peace, you're definitely missed down here.
Steve Schirripa who played Bobby said Dominic Chianese was trying so hard not to laugh at the dildo but he cracked a smile while James Gandolfini lost it completely 😂😂
Corrado always had the best facial expressions, especially his cat swallowed the canary look at Tony when Tony visited him in prison while on the phone. 😎
They really blew it they should have had Tony bring that London Broil to Chrissy and Paulie when they were rescued so they could eat it in the car on the way home
Everyone remembers Pine Barrens as a funny episode, and it was, but this was when Bobby started his ascent. Tony is laughing now but once they get out there he realizes Bobby is guy who is prepared and competent.
I always liked the idea that Bobby was probably the best marksmen out of any of the current members of the Soprano crew because of his dad and despite the fact he never killed anyone (prior to Tony making him kill someone after their monopoly fight that is).
Timothy Willox that was the only thing that really bothered me about the show. There’s no way Bobby could’ve ever been made without killing someone. Making your bones is basically a requirement for membership in the mafia. I think they just wanted Bobby to still be likable.
Could we please appreciate for a minute the extraordinarily lofty acting job Dominic Chinese did in maintaining the continuity of the scene while James laughed? The scene was a success thanks to him.
You can always find a Ralphie quote that fits any scene in the Sopranos. "I got my limits too Junior." "Unless of course there's a salami sandwich around."
My favourite part is when Tony is dying laughing while looking at him. I was in a similar situation. I told my dad that I dont need his help and that Im gonna move out. After a week I was back. When I walked into the kitchen he stood and leaned on the counter like just like Tony. 0:45 My soul left my body.
Best part is hearing Tony genuinely crackin up still in the background when Bobby is talking to Junior. Crazy that they were able to nail that take and not muck it up lol.
Another way that makes this funny is considering the stressful day Tony’s had this whole episode, Paulie and Christopher aside, just makes it better. Sometimes you just need to laugh to deal with the stress.
This scene is so amazing. Bacala’s walking in ready to work only to get laughed at, Gandolfini’s genuine reaction, and Dominic Chianese trying not to break character.
This is just so awesome. I am saving it and when I am sad I am going to come here and look at the great Mr. Gandolfini really laugh. Sopranos, true genius.
so sad when we find out that bobby used to go hunting with his dad, and probably felt hurt when Tony laughed. and then he tried to bond with Tony by telling a joke, and Tony doesn't laugh. I felt like crying
"We shot that and it just happened to snow. That was by accident. And we shot it up by West Point and we stayed up there in a hotel for X amount of days so I enjoyed that episode. Also, I’ve told this story before and I don’t want to be rude, but Jim was supposed to laugh when he saw me walk in in a hunting outfit. Do you remember that scene? He's like, “I don't know how you're gonna make me laugh tomorrow, I’ve already seen the outfit.” So I ask the prop guy, and I didn't tell anyone else, and I ask him if he had any dildos. And he had this big giant one. It looked like an Italian bread. And when I turned that corner, I’m twirling it around. I’m off camera. That’s when you see Jim almost fall over laughing. And if you look at Uncle Junior he almost cracks but he doesn't. [Laughs] So that's how I got him to laugh on that."
What a perfect scene. Middle of the night. Solemn gathering. A fit of laughter. I love how he puts the bottle and glass down. Then falls into the kitchen sink.
Bobby is a tough sob... An when he is not being treated like a baby an has to stand up for himself he can hold his own. Bobby might not be boss material... But he is up there in different ways... Id take bobby to be in my family... He is smart an loyal.. Treat him right he will treat you right..
As soon as I saw Bobby in hunting gear I couldn't stop cracking up and watching Tony crack up even more just made it funnier. Idc if it was all a dildo or not, still probably the funniest episode in the entire show.
