The owners of the Golden Ball, Reg and Nancy Battersby sold it around 1981/2 and bought the Station hotel renaming it The Regency (RegNancy) but I don’t know how long they had it for, as it’s reverted back to it’s original name. The Golden Ball was raided in the 60’s as Nancy Battersby was Ronnie Biggs cousin, and the old bill were scouring the country for him. The Golden Ball used to be the snooker player Bill Warbernicks local, where he used to sink 20 pints at a sitting.
Sorry forgot, the building you were looking at on Victoria square was a Yates pub at one time but it was originally Gas showrooms. If you walked further down church st you have found original gas offices near river trent where gasometer used to be. There is also another lovely tiled building which used to be The Fishermans arms which backs onto what used to be the cattle market many moons ago.
The Ship Inn was built with reclaimed timber beams from dismantled ships from Lord Nelson’s fleet from the Battle of Trafalgar , it was a quaint old pub in the 80’s and had a disastrous reno in the early 90’s when it was renamed “the Tut & Shive” that was the beginning of its end !
Really great video. Can I make a suggestion, take me round with you next time? lol 😀😀 Just a couple of mistakes I believe. Fuggels used to be the Friar Tuck pub/restaurant, I never knew it as the Blue Bell (I'm 49). Dandy's was more or less across from the Unicorn pub, Halifax bank was Mr Moles pub and before that it was a nightclub. You missed the best venue in Worksop - The Dukeries live music venue, used to be the Q club on Newcastle Avenue, that place is the friendliest place on a Saturday night. Mac and Co was the British Gas showrooms for many years until it was sold to Yatees, it shut down at Christmas last year but I am informed that it has been sold. Really good video
Hi Owen I was born in 64, I forgot Yates was the British gas showroom. Guy who I thought was running a pub up there told me Fuggles was the Old Blue Bell, but moved. I hadn't a clue where Dandy's was but I know others used it. Stopped pubbing about 2000, so changes will have escaped me. I wouldn't even know where to start a pub crawl in Sheffield, where I spent most of my time. I feel sorry for the youth of today. Best Tim
I forgot the Fisherman's arms down Church st at the side of the Gas showrooms, it still looks like a pub, but is an house and the Tigers den on the car park where the Precint is.@@owensmith4651
The Fishermans has that lovely tiling on the outside, just like The Swan has. Tigers Den was totally demolished a few years ago, both were good pubs. There were a few more down Bridge Street but you'd never know that now when you look, there was the Wine Cellar, TP Woods, Kiplings, and possibly a few more, Tim. Plus the Norfolk Arms and the Westgate Pub on Westgate
Definitely interesting! Have lived in Worksop all my life. They killed Ship Inn when somebody bought it and turned half into Tut and shive looked like inside a bus. My great grandmother was landlady of White Swan, her second husband was Mr Ward who was land lord. Anybody local will always tell you it's Ward Lane not Castle Hill. My great uncle also ran Cartlton Tavern which was on other side of railway to Station Hotel, it is now a Bathroom showroom. His name was Albert Booth. Family have worked for local breweries for many years. My grandad worked at the maltings on Gateford Rd for Stones, that is where Aldi is now.
Quite a shame that all the community in Worksop has been removed Linda. Looking back to the 50s through to the 70s, so many other pubs I didn't know about have gone. I had been going to Worksop from 1966 when my parents moved out of Sheffield to North Anston.
Living in between Dinnington and Worksop, I rarely go to either. I only ever went to Dinnington to go to the comp - there’s just no appeal, it’s a shame especially with Worksop - lovely buildings.
Worksop was thriving until the bypass in 1986 and out of town started its demise. Dinnington got hit in 1992 when the colliery closed down, started to recover then hammered by the banks closing and then lockdown. Every where has been asset stripped, look at the beautiful village of Laughton en le Morthern, nothing there. We are looking to like the USA.
@@timawellsI tell you if we were down south, places like Worksop would get the funding and become somewhat of a tourist town. Plenty of history there, just absolutely wrecked by past governments.
Been in most of the pubs mentioned. Above the Halifax on the corner, in the 70's, there was a nightclub called the Carousel. I loved it, apart from the fighting, It was like the Wild West. Isabellas when I was younger, but Frog and Nightgown was my favourite. Tended to only go to Worksop for Isabellas when I was 16 and Thursday nights for pubs.
Yes, I loved the Frog, upstairs and downstairs, the curious name, also reminded me of, the Pig and Whistle, in Sheffield. Isabella's, I remember going there. Once, with the steel dance floor?. You mention that you had been told that the White Lion was referred to as the "Top Hat" Nearly right- it was "The Top House" ie the last public House at the top of the town as one left to go up Sparken Hill but a memory now shrouded by advancing years I know this because I lived at the Lion Gates Lodge between Jan 1963 and June 1966. My Landlady at the Lodge used to get her supply of Mackeson there and I used to take back the empties when sufficient had accumulated. She drank just the one per day and I used to wait until a big basketful had accumulated, take them back and receive a pint and 10 ciggies. in return By the way Tim Worksop over the years Worksop has lost 42 pubs.
Yes Tim. The Lion Gates Lodge, main entrance to Welbeck Abbey Estate. I was lucky enough to have the run of the whole estate apart from His Nibs''s house up in the woods and round the actual Abbey itself which in those days was an Army College. It was the only lodging I ever had which boasted enormous electrically operated gates.Didn't half impress the girlfriends!!!@@timawells
