  • There's so many things that Granny makes that our family loves, but one of our favorites is Holy Smoke Cake. The dessert is fairly common and has several other names. It's always a special time here in the Appalachian Mountains when Granny makes a Holy Smoke Cake.

My stomach couldn't process raw bananas anymore by the time I turned 15. My Granny figured out a way for me to still enjoy her banana pudding. She made me my own personal one WITHOUT the bananas so I could still enjoy her special treat with the rest of the family. ❤🎉❤ I really miss her. Give your Granny an extra hug from this viewer.

I'm on the brink of 72 in a couple of months myself. My grandma was also born in 1898, but died in 1969, when I was only 18. She wasn't a cook, but she was my safe place, too. I had a good family and didn't really need a safe person, per se, but there was just a bond there that settled my soul. I spent lots of time at her home in the summer, playing Parcheesi and watching her crochet. I loved her so much and think of her often.

My grandma was born in 1892 and passed away 1 year and 1 day before Elvis Presley (August 15, 1976, always helped me remember!). She became 84 years old, which was quite amazing, since she had diabetes, used insulin and was totally blind. If it wasn’t for her getting gangrene in her legs (and they didn’t do anything about it back then, so it developed and took her life), she would have become even older! Bless her, she was something special. Even blind she knitted and crocheted. She had 12 children, 9 lived up, as well as 3 step children (my grandpa was married to her cousin first, but she died and my grandma came to help him out with the children and ended out marrying him). All her children, including all the boys, were taught how to knit, crochet, embroider and sew. Some of the boys really loved this and kept using their skills their whole life, embroidering pictures and knitting clothes for kids and grandkids. I don’t remember her cooking and baking, that I have only been told about, as she all the time I can remember, was blind.

Sweet beyond words!!! I giggled and teared up and just wanted to give her a hug. I loved how she scrapped the goodies (with a long spoon) into the bowl/pan and patted down the crust. Then she humbly gave credit to the lady who posted recipe, deferring from herself. LOVELY. ❤

New subscriber here. Wow, did I learn a lot! This is my son-in- laws favorite dessert. I will be making it this weekend and now I have your granny's awesome tips to make it easier. I'll be right at home on this channel. My momma was an Appalachian girl from TN. God bless your sweet Granny! I love her precious voice.❤

I just love your granny, she is so adorable. I laughed when she said "over yonder", I thought that was a stereotype of American's. She just has the sweetest accent. I am so glad that you guys are close, there is nothing like granny's, they are the best. My one granny passed when I was 8 and I still miss her. Please do some interviews of her, about the olden days, I would love to see those, like what she wore, what they ate, what they did for fun anything. I would literally watch her reading the newspaper, she is so interesting! Cake looks amazing as well. I have to try that!

I remember people saying 'over yonder' and 'up the road a piece' when I was small and we lived near the Appalachians for 4 years. When we moved back to a northern state, we didn't hear those phrases anymore.

@@JB-3794 it sounds so cool. I am Canadian so I have heard it on movies. It is one of those things that you are not sure if it is real life or a stereotype.

This is so sweet, I love it. She reminds me of my Grandma who just passed away, I remember when growing up I would stand next to her and she would teach me how to make her own recipes, but she got Altzheimers and we missed out on alot. I miss and cherish those days with her so much. Cherish your grandparents and the wisdom they have to offer, and of course their recipes!

I love southern voices, left to follow husband in 1971. Oregon now. Driving back in fall, 40 hours, spread in 7-9 days.
God Bless! Keep up the recipes!

I feel blessed to have found this video when I was looking for a simple recipe to make for Easter. It truly touched my heart and made me teary eyed to see you and your Granny in the kitchen sharing this recipe with us. This reminds me of the many times mom and I spent in her kitchen and she'd be telling me her special recipes, & as old as I was she'd still tell me how to cook, lol but I loved it, unfortunately we lost her in 2019, I miss her so much. Cherish every moment together because YOU ARE TRULY BLESSED. I am making this cake in honor of all the Granny's, lol. Hope to see more videos. Thank you
