Bulgarian trains are a classic man! I live in Germany for many years and i think even tho the trains here are fast and on time just the charm is not there..... Always when i go to Bulgaria i travel by train, its just an awesome experiance showing your head thru the windows and just roaming around freely. its fucking awesome i love it. cant wait to go back again in January to make some trips with the train :D

Guys, next time you should take the narrow-gauge train from Septemvri to Dobrinishte, a 6-hour ride that will take you through wonderful, idyllic rolling landscapes right to the foot of Bulgaria's most breath-taking mountain, Pirin! You can spend a whole week trekking on its rocky trails, amidst serene glacial lakes, enjoying an unbelievable diversity of views. Best time of the year: July through September.

If you ever go back to BG on the train, ask for the "burz" train, that's the express, and it will only stop in the big towns, not every town. The "putnichescki" is the slow train that makes all the stops. Also, I hope you'd eat more than cold soups....Bulgarian food is incredible, and very affordable.

The train has its advantages. There is plenty of room so you can walk. It is possible to switch compartment if you don't like something or someone. You could even have a good sleep cos the seats are huge and most of the time empty. I have used trains a lot when I was a student and I know the things haven't change much the last 20 years. Nowadays everybody is in a hurry and the train can't compete with buses but in winter when there is a lot of snow in the mountains it could be a good option.
Our trains are older than you. Their average age is 40 years. Come again in 3-4 years, when the distance from Sofia to Varna will be in 3-4 hours with new trains, new routes 🚄

Used to go on similar train trips when I was a kid during summer break. Had to make do with a gameboy knockoff and some books/magazines, but it was still pretty nice.
The mountain that you saw while you were traveling is called Stara Planina. It is the biggest in the Balkans and the name of the peninsula comes from it. Because "Balkans" literally means mountans. Actually, the highest peak on the Balkans is in Bulgaria, not in Stara Planina in another mountain but as you have saw we have mountains and sea. I hope you like it and come back some day :)
Not much people use trains, more of the people are using buses. The train that you used stopped in Veliko Tarnovo - maybe one of the best towns in Europe. The other city that you must visit someday is Plovdiv.
I always bring strong essential oils like orange and lavender in a travel alcohol bottle with water plus Clorox wipes for bathrooms. Everywhere overseas, Italy, Amsterdam no products are used in the bathroom, Hawaii was good? The other people appreciate it too!! The U.S. is getting really bad too!! So you guys have been to the same Pizza in Varna where I go. But the neighborhod isn't good. Abou the trains we have a saying: " When a Chinese investors asked .how long it takes with the speed train from Sofia to Varna and they've been told that's 9h, they were impressed by the size of the country"

This video made me so nostalgic... I loved taking the train, some trains were terrible though - crammed, stinky, and uncomfortable. Planning to try a train trip from Chicago to NYC in the spring, it would be interesting to see how different or similar are the train travels in the U.S compared to Bulgaria.

A sleeping one is way better, you have a sink, light, and a place where you can leave your luggage. The only thing is that the sleeping cabins are very tiny, but still better.
They didn't say whether there are power ports on the train to charge devices and if there is wifi. It does appear rolling stock in Bulgaria is somewhat neglected compared to other European countries.
There are no charging ports or wifi in the trains, unless you are in the sleeping wagons which do have charging ports and a sink for washing up, there are 3 bunk beds per cabin and are separated male and female ones. They are just beginning to renovate some of the carts and we might finally have at least plugs for the longer trips.
The train has large steps and most of the platforms require you to walk up and down a couple flights of stairs. But walking around Varna and Sofia is very easy.

actually the bus to varna takes about as long...so you didnt lose much time
but if the driver is skilled it can get to 6(говоря от опит)
