Lovely documentary. Unlike most documentaries about Bulgaria, that love to film and show only the slums, this one shows the beauty, history and treasures in Bulgaria. Only very few people know that Bulgaria saved all its Jewish people, this is one, and two - Georgi Dimitrov, in 1932, alone defeated Hermann Göring himself in the Leipzig trial....

I live in UAE but heart is in Sofia. Rick Steve always makes the greatest videos of European countries. I see his videos with great enthusiasm and long to travel like him. But for Bulgaria I want to do anything possible to travel at any cost.
Thanks Rick, Bulgaria is one of those places which needed a light to be shone on.Beautiful and fascinating but very little Is known about it , it's people, culture ,cities and towns.
My heart warmed from all the positivity in the comment section. Love when people appreciate the beauty of simplicity. As a bulgarian, travelling around the world I really get fascinated by the scenery peaks, the delicious food and warm-hearted people in my own countrie. The Balkan countries are amazing, really worth visiting them. Each one has its own charm, but one thing is for sure the people there will be always the most kindest and real ones in comparison to other countries. Kudos Rick, the video is truly amazing! Great work!
Stunning and beautiful. How I wish one day by God's grace I can see this country with my two eyes. Thank you for this interesting video. Greetings from Philippines ❤️❤️❤️
Love it that they show gratefulness to those who help them and teach their children to respect the one who gave their language a written script. That's why they are blessed.
Mr. Steves, I really enjoy your videos for all over the world. As a Bulgarian I would like to thank you for making one for Bulgaria. I liked it very much, though Sofia could be shown in a better light. There are parts of Sofia whose architecture witnesses it was developing as a beautiful European city before 1944, unluckily this tendency was broken down by the communist regime. And I would add at least several seconds for two other cities on the Danube - Vidin with its ancient fortress, that is the only fully preserved fortress in Bulgaria, and Ruse, that was with really beautiful European architecture, also unluckily heavily damaged by the communist negligence and destruction.
Rick, my wife and I picked up on your shows since our Southern France honeymoon in 2014 and it's a such a joy for us to see these new full-length features again. We call you our Uncle Rick and we won't go to any European country without looking up your feature first. Keep up the good work and know that you and your crew have a special place in the hearts of these two big fans of travel!
A message to +Rick Steves' Europe. I'm lucky enough to notice you posted this video only 10 hours ago. Perhaps I'll be fortunate enough for you to read my comment. I just wanted to say, thank you for all your traveling videos. Believe it or not, they've gotten me through some difficult times. I always found them to be a beautiful way to escape the mediocrity of this world. And allow me to keep pushing for more out of Life. Please keep doing what you do. For those of us that understand why you do it. We Appreciate you taking the time to learn about living abroad. And your teaching us how to Navigate ourselves on the other side of the planet, from an American Perspective. Thanks so much.
The modern world can truly be depressing, this is why suicide rates are so high in developed countries. The problem lies in the culture of individuality in the modern world, it's hard to find a purpose when you're constantly lost in the sea of consumerism, the search for endless "originality" and pleasure. Being surrounded by history and culture is genuinely uplifting for the soul. You know what your purpose is, where you fit in the world. You're just a small piece of something ancient, your purpose is to maintain what was built before you, and your duty is to pass it onto the people after you. I truly believe travelling, even vicariously through travelling shows, can be a cure for depression. You're exposed to humanity's beauty. Cathedrals, sculptures, traditions, art, music, food, etc.. Much healthier way to pass the time than concerning yourself with what iphone to buy next, or which mall to visit next.
Traditionalism is what sustains men and nothing can be more destructive of traditionalism than modernity. Hence, suicidality and a host of other problems.
Bulgaria ... one of the most beautiful, mysterious countries in the world! With history Also the oldest in Europe! Founded more than 1300 years ago! And this is only in their present lands. Before that there were many other countries with the same name.
@@SaadBinAlamgir3345 no they did not, the Bulgar tribes came from the territory of modern Ukraine and helped the Slavic tribes to liberate themselves from the Byzantine empire in 681. The Bulgar language was lost soon after due to the sheer amount of Slavic people in the country. MG is probably from Serbia or Macedonia where they get brainwashed to believe that our history is theirs.
0deadx21 I know but it’s not a miracle that Bulgaria survived a though time I actually wanna tell you in Bulgaria everything is cheap everything they sell is awesome quality and friends there is not a problem also I am from Bulgaria and DONT SPEND MONEY FOR LUCK cuz you are already lucky to find Bulgaria as Bulgaria never wanted bad to anyone and will accept anyone as who they are :)
Many thanks Rick for this outstanding Bulgaria video. You never fail to inject clean and laughable humor to your travel videos. I also love the stunning open space scenery of Bulgaria. Outstanding! Many thanks again.
It seems that the likes of Bulgaria and Romania are the "dark horses" of Europe, so much to offer, but little known; but thankfully not inundated with bus loads of tourists. Bulgaria is one of the places I have wanted to visit. As a young man, I visited Germany and the Netherlands, and did what most young guys do in the Netherlands, but I have not had an opportunity to go back to Europe, it is costly and time consuming to do that from New Zealand, where I live. I'm planning on going next year for my 50th, and Bulgaria is on my to visit list.
The thing you got wrong is that Bulgaria is a country full of tourists. Tourism is one of main factors in the economy, more people visit Bulgaria than more known countries like Australia, Brazil, Argentina. Around 10 million foreign tourists visit the country annually with numbers rising each year. During summer you hardly can find rooms in hotels at the coast. Same goes for the ski resorts during winter. Walking around downtown Sofia you will always see groups of tourists and on the main pedestrian streets you can hardly hear Bulgarian language spoken in the cafes and restaurants. Bulgaria is the most visited country in the Balkans and one of the most visited countries in Europe in the last 10 years. Not only that but the country is full and popular for expats, British elders retire there and buy houses, also the oldest American institutions outside its borders are located in Bulgaria, so there is a large amount of Americans living there. My best friends are from Australia and they study here in the Medical University. Universities in Bulgaria have hundreds of thousands of foreign students coming from all around the world since education here is either of better quality or cheaper for them to afford. They say that Bulgaria has better equipment and base than what the places like the universities in Australia can offer. Its mostly that media presents the country in a bad and obscure way for some unknown reasons. Crime here is one of the lowest in the world, my friends feel safer here than in Australia, most of their friends came to visit the country and also said they wish they would live here than in Canberra or Sydney. The country isnt what you may think it is. Also Ive met a lot of Kiwis in the country , mostly visiting for their gap year or were on school trips. Im not saying its the greatest country in the world but media always portrays the country in a bad way.
Yasen Well, I have learnt something, thank you, but as a Kiwi, I am bombarded with images of Western Europe, not so much of Central and Eastern Europe. I would quite like to live in Sofia. Auckland, Canberra and Sydney are quite violent cities, despite our clean green image.
Popular media portray former "Socialist" countries as dour and with uninspiring architecture and all buildings coloured in a drab "communist" grey. It is true that countries like Poland, Romania, and Bulgaria, which have had difficult twentieth centuries have much to offer and have a rich history and sense of culture. I have since met a couple of Kiwis who have purchased property in Bulgaria, far far cheaper than in New Zealand.
I went last year to visit a friend, all I can say is that the food is great, it's cheap, and I was surprised at how many people spoke English and how fluently they spoke it

I'm so glad you mentioned how the Bulgarians saved their Jewish community. Not all was darkness in WWII.
Bulgarians here have a reputations for being highly cultured and community minded.
I didnt knew this, and I am happy about it. Thank you for the information. And welcome to Bulgaria one day, you wont be disappointed.
Shalom! Had the chance to visit Israel 3 times, LOVED it! It feels so much like home and everybody is super friendly once they hear that you are from Bulgaria

When will the Bulgarian senjen be from the European Union?
Abdullah Al Morshed yes Bulgaria is in European Union but it s the poorest country in EU

Wonderful country, excellent presentation! We were in Sofia back in 2000, also visited Ruse and Silistra - can't wait to go back again. The people, food, music, and sights are worth the long trip from the U.S. Don't forget to get some rose-oil products too :)
I live in UAE but heart is in Sofia. Rick Steve always makes the greatest videos of European countries. I see his videos with great enthusiasm and long to travel like him. But for Bulgaria I want to do anything possible to travel at any cost.
Thanks Rick, Bulgaria is one of those places which needed a light to be shone on.Beautiful and fascinating but very little

Great work!
I'd have to say the Balkans are simply stunning. Amazing places

I love Romania! Your cities, your food, your culture - can't wait to go back there! Greetings, neighbor!
A great country and people. God bless them!
Love it that they show gratefulness to those who help them and teach their children to respect the one who gave their language a written script. That's why they are blessed.
Bulgaria is a beautiful country I love its folklore 💕💕💕💕💕💕💕
Nice City mam I'm india 💐💐💐
Bulgaria and Bulgarians are beautiful
Thank you for featuring Bulgaria. Lovely show for a great country.
I wish I could visit those rose fields. Bulgarian rose is a great perfume.
I'm Bulgarian and enjoyed watching every bit of it. Thank you for the lovely video.
It seems a wonderful place to live.
Beautiful country
This is my beautiful Bulgaria! Thank you so much for that nice video😊
Love Bulgaria. From Thailand 🇹🇭
Heartiest Wishes to all brothers and sisters of Bulgaria... Lovely from INDIA ❤️
Frank T me too I suffer depression
Radko Mladich What ethnicity are the people? Or a lot of them Jewish? Italian?
@M G
Why??
Bulgarians came from Mongolia??
@@SaadBinAlamgir3345 no they did not, the Bulgar tribes came from the territory of modern Ukraine and helped the Slavic tribes to liberate themselves from the Byzantine empire in 681. The Bulgar language was lost soon after due to the sheer amount of Slavic people in the country. MG is probably from Serbia or Macedonia where they get brainwashed to believe that our history is theirs.

Bulgaria's shape is quite lovely. It almost looks like a lion. Quite an amazing coincidence given the country's lion theme they have going on.
I also recommend try the food it’s awesome also terracota plates and vases and cups and thing from terracota in general
Здравейте с поздрав от мен и България !!! Ще се радвам да сте много здрави и щастливи !!! 🙋💖
i'm from Bulgaria and I think it's very underrated when it has a sea, mountains, a rich history, caves, the highest waterfall in the Balkans, etc.
I am in love from seeing this video. It looks so lovely there. You are very fortunate.
Highest waterfall in balkans. Wow. So is that like the 50th highest in Europe.
You are welcome !
Ts ts ts ....
I went last year to visit a friend, all I can say is that the food is great, it's cheap, and I was surprised at how many people spoke English and how fluently they spoke it
Beautiful streets and architecture ! Thanks Rick
