Do you experience an achy, sore wrist or hand? Perhaps you’re feeling numbness or tingling? If so, you might be dealing with carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS). In our latest video, Dr. Robin Armstrong from Willowbrook Chiropractic in Langley dives deep into this common yet often misunderstood condition. Here’s a sneak peek into what you can expect from the episode.
    Understanding Carpal Tunnel Syndrome
The carpal tunnel is a narrow passageway located on the underside of your wrist. It’s formed by the tendons of your finger muscles and the bones of your wrist, with a ligament crossing over it. The median nerve, which controls the muscles in your fingers and hand, runs through this tunnel. When there’s inflammation or compression in this area, it can lead to carpal tunnel syndrome.
    Symptoms and Causes
Dr. Armstrong explains that if you’re suffering from CTS, you might experience pain or achiness in your wrist or hand, numbness or tingling in your fingers, and even weakness in your grip. These symptoms can result from inflammation around the tendons, poor typing posture, or repetitive strain from tasks that require fine motor skills.
    Effective Treatment Options
One of the key takeaways from the episode is that CTS can be treated effectively through conservative methods. Dr. Armstrong emphasizes the importance of ensuring the median nerve moves freely from the neck down through the arm. This involves optimizing the movement of the neck, chest, armpit, and forearm muscles to relieve any pressure on the nerve.
    At-Home Exercises
Dr. Armstrong shares several exercises you can do at home to alleviate CTS symptoms. Stretching the muscles of your chest and forearm, as well as performing nerve flossing exercises, can help improve the nerve’s mobility. For instance, you can stretch your chest muscles by placing one arm behind you against a wall for 30 seconds. Nerve flossing involves extending and flexing your wrist while tilting your head in different directions to glide the median nerve through its pathway.
    Ergonomic Adjustments
Another crucial aspect of managing CTS is ensuring your workstation is ergonomically set up. Dr. Armstrong recommends making adjustments to your desk, chair, and computer setup to reduce strain on your wrists and hands. For more detailed guidance, you can check out Willowbrook Chiropractic’s video on workstation ergonomics available on their UA-cam channel.
    Seeking Professional Help
If you find that these exercises and adjustments aren’t enough, Dr. Armstrong advises seeking professional help. Willowbrook Chiropractic offers hands-on therapies that can effectively treat CTS. You can book an appointment online and get personalized care from Dr. Armstrong and his team.
