If you're on a road trip and want to avoid back pain, there are a few simple things you can do to keep your back at ease. Hi, I'm Dr. Robin Armstrong, a chiropractor at Willowbrook Chiropractic in Langley. Currently, I'm taking a short rest break here at Lone Lake, just outside of Merri.
Tip #1: Take Short Breaks Every Hour
Even a little bit of time can make a big difference.
Tip #2: Set Up Your Seat Correctly
It's crucial to set up your car seat correctly. If you haven't watched Dr. Friedman's video on how to do that, I recommend checking it out before you hit the road.
Tip #3: Simple Movements For Your Break
Once you're on your rest break, you can follow a few simple movements to keep your back moving. Start with some marching, lifting one leg at a time, and then the other. Next, try standing back bend by placing your hands on your low back, arching backward, and looking up. This helps reverse the sitting posture. You can also stretch both arms overhead, lean to one side, and then to the other. To add a little more relief, gently rotate your torso from side to side.

    Do you have a video on picking up bigger kids without back pain? Like 5,6,7 year olds? I ask because our state just increased the car seat age from 5 to 8 wich means my little brother who jusf turned 5 is going to have to stay in a car seat untill he is 8 and my mom has had really bad back pain from picking him up and putting him in his car seat everytime we get in the car. Anyway she could pick him up without hurting her back? I try to pick him up and put him in his car seat as much as possible to help my mom but that is starting to hurt my back to.

      Big kids are really hard on the back. I would suggest having them climb into the car and car seat themselves when safe to do so and the child is able. When that is not possible, same rules apply with turning in one direction at a time (don't bend AND twist for example) and have the child hold on to you so they are not pulling in all directions. If they can start from a higher position to be lifted (on a step or the curb) that helps to not have to bend down. We don't have a big kid video right now, but hopefully these tips help you and your mom. Good luck!

      @@willowbrookchiro Yeah thank you, are car is small and has a narrow space in the back seat so its usually not an option for my brother to climb into his car seat himself, if he could do that everytime my mom of me would just have to buckle him in after and thatd solve the whole thing! I will tell her about the tips you suggested for picking him up and putting him in the car seat. I am wondering what do you mean exactly by having him hold on so he'd not pulling in all directions? I hope we can get this fixed now since my brother Is going to be in his car seat untill he Is 8 and I dont want my mom and me to have to keep picking him up everytime we get in the car since that would mess up both are backs and really hurt my little brothers feelings cuz hes such a sweet little guy and loves us so much. My moms thinking about getting a new car to, one with a bigger backseat so my brother can just climb into his car seat without having to be picked up. It would be great since hes gonna be in a car seat for a really long time now so hopefully we can get a new car soon. Thank you so much for your tips my mom and me are very grateful!

      We use a variety of techniques including "cracking" and non cracking techniques based on the patients preference, condition, and health history.

      Your welcome. Car seats are the worst! When safe, and the child is old enough, you could teach them to climb into the seat themselves so you just lift them into the vehicle, avoiding the lift and duck and twist move. Good luck!
