Kate ought to have given Doug a scare. They should have written a love near miss for her too. That would have been satisfying considering he's always doing this to his wife.

Linda Lavin attractive? Hmmm. Additionally, the script writers for this show (and the audience that think it's such a great reflection of family values, respect and love for one another) are sure skewed. This is the fourth episode where Doug shows his questionable morals/character. First, he had an affair, then he took Willie to a strip club to celebrate Willie's birthday and then he gets drunk in his own house with a younger, female colleague. Whether she was female or not, his getting drunk in his own house while doing "work" and his 15 year old daughter is around, is irresponsible. There's platonic relationships and then there's playing hooky with an obviously (insert word of choice) female at work. Classy Doug, you great father and husband, you!
There's a movie called "I Remeber Mama" (1948) with Barbara Bel Geddes (the mom on Dallas). A really great movie about an amazing mom. If you like this show (episode!) you will probably like that movie. :)

Both James Broderick and Sada Thompson captured all of the nuances in their marriage so well: People are human, and all sides of the issue were explored (even Annie Laurie and her thoughts). That's what I've always loved about this show. The only thing that brought it down in my opinion, was the subplot with Audrey. Never liked that horrible negative character.
I love where Kate goes into her room and Buddy is setting on Kate's bed. Buddy word her mother the right questions and gets the right answers from her mom. Doug goes back to Kate and they remain married throughout the rest of the series.

Doug felt like he was trapped in a prison all day. That office. For once he got to leave the office in the middle of the work day and go have a hot dog and hang out and joke with a nice person. Problem is the nice person was another woman and that's not right. Sad to say but marriage also resembles a prison in that sense. There's certain things that you just don't do, no matter how innocent you think it is. Marriage is like a prison but you have to look at it as a good prison with more upsides than downsides. If you're not on board with that, then you have no business getting married. Doug had been driven half nuts after carrying on years of this weekly work grind and so maybe he forgot himself. He saw a chance to escape from prison for a few hours and it was near impossible to resist. He was wrong but Kate got a little out of hand, talking to him as if she suspected him of something and for that she apologized. That's why this show was so good, it was often nuanced in that way. There wasn't always a clear cut good guy and bad guy. People did some things that were wrong but it never got to the point where it couldn't be straightened out with a little communication. How many episodes have there been so far with Doug almost cheating? Heres hoping for someone to show Kate some attention for a change. I watched this series as a teen but dont recall any of the episodes.
There was something about this episode that seemed shallow to me, compared to the usual fine quality of other episodes of Family. I would have expected Doug to have seen from the beginning that Annie Laurie was a needy, troubled person. He shouldn't have encouraged her attempts to put their relationship on a personal level, much less on a romantic level. It just seemed out of character for Doug to be tempted by her boldness to any degree. So because I didn't find that part of the story believable, the rest of it struck me as farcical.
@@vivianpowell1732 IDK about all that, but I think Buddy and Audrey's little spat was a hundred times more interesting than the crap going on between Doug, Kate and Linda Lavin
It's annoying how Kate found it so easy to shut it down when Howard wanted to be with her, but Doug looks pained to turn down any serious chance to cheat on his wife. He is a crappy man. And Kate just drinks her liquor and stares off into oblivion. I wish she would dump him or scratch someone's eyes out.
I can't believe Doug was stupid enough to go as far as he did with another woman -- again. And that with three teenagers and being 50, he hadn't yet learned about the superficial unreality of the infatuation stage and that he took it seriously.
I like this series, I remember my Mom and older sister watching it sometimes, my take on this episode is i understand why Annie likes Doug but she coming on to strong and he is married, but i understand why Doug feels tempted but he is a good man and doesn't do anything wrong he just so nice and that's what Annie knew she even said he was so nice and gentle...Kate is lucky she should spice it up sometimes with her husband not be so complacent, neither one of them should be, this was a good episode. Both real mature in the circumstances, I would of acted the same way Kate did probably worse..but it would of made him run to the other woman. Understanding can be so hard most of the times. Anyway glad to see these episodes again because their isn't anything worth a 💩 on tv. these ugly days. 🤷♀️
The most Doug would have done with Annie Laurie is flirt with his own youth with his corny polo shirts and piano singing. By the time he played hooky for the day even, Annie Laurie was doing all the flirting, he had already resorted to a cautious kind of standoffish tone. His initial attraction was that she was his "opponent," but then she turned out to just be pathetic and a liar. Nothing like Kate as he originally mused. Even though him disrespecting Kate with his wandering eye was practically as hurtful as cheating there for a minute. Kate kind of overdoing it with the singing pizza bit at the end, unless "Doug" just missed the acting mark not acting equally as "meant to be" of a couple they were supposed to be.
@@greenonions5296 i don't think it's at all realistic to expect men to not have wandering eyes. we are genetically programmed to do so. what is noble is doug's (or any man's) ability to rise above our base instincts to propagate the species. it's no excuse for 'cheating' but it has always fascinated me that women are so thrown by or surprised by a man's wandering eye. the problems only arise if the man follows that wandering eye.
He has money, he still has his hair, he is confident, he is in somewhat decent shape. Not saying I think Doug is hot! A lot of women would like to have Kate's life, er husband.
This is an interesting twist where the woman hits on the man and the man refuses. It's usually the other way around. In another episode we find out that Doug cheated on Kate. Is that before or after Annie Laurie?
In the very first episode when Kate and Doug are arguing about Nancy leaving Jeff because of his affair, she brings up his affair with Margaret (Maggie) and how she forgave him.....In season 2 Maggie shows up played by Pat Crowley and Kate starts to worry. In the end Doug remains faithful.

They paint Doug here as a victim and some Nobel guy for doing what Taylor Tomlinson calls “honoring the most basic agreement of our relationship.” That Doug line “I’m middle aged, we’re very vulnerable” was nothing more than an apology for 70s men, avoiding the reality that many adulterers were taking advantage of the sexual revolution they privately derided. I guess there were some good ones like Doug but I think this and many other episodes give horrible acting men a pass.
Although Doug is in a committed relationship (he is human). People want to know that they are appealing and interesting. Marriage is very routine and we tend to get side tracked from time-to- time. The good was that Doug handled his situation very well.

The last 24 hours you have been 100% selfish Doug.
Doug is playing with fire with that woman.
Funny how Nancy never has to get a sitter for Timmy. It seems that she’s never with that child!
TIMMY'S HAVING A SECRET AFFAIR...WITH A LOVING MOTHER. (NANCY NEVER NOTICED.)
Here I thought I was the only one noticing she's always off doing without him.
It was the 70's. She would put a little whiskey in his bottle. Not a peep.
That drink Willie brought to Kate was right on time!
Great episode! Linda Lavin's accent was jarring. She was a discordant note in a wonderful episode.
LOVE THIS SHOW ALWAYS HAVE AND LOVE LINDA AND HER SHOW ALICE
Oh I Like Linda Lavin I Love Alice Another favorite from that Era
Great actors and movie
Still love the show
Another woman throwing herself at Doug Lawrence. Next stop Mel's Diner.
They should have had Bonnie Franklin make a guest appearance too....." Hold me Doug, I',m scared"......🤣
I love this show
Linda Lavin was simply adorable on TV in the 70s... just cute and very funny... sexy smile.
@@KennethofTroy So this time his wandering eye wasn't enough to tempt him, but next time who knows?
Doug is not dumb enough to have an affair IN HIS OWN HOUSE! (He's no Bill Cinton....)
But he did have an affair, it's referenced in that episode with the actress... And Kate invites her to dinner... That'd be a bit much
Not getting the whole "Doug is a babe magnet" thing.
😄!
Kate acts like he is some buff stud in his polo shirt.
He has money, he still has his hair, he is confident, he is in somewhat decent shape.
Not saying I think Doug is hot!
A lot of women would like to have Kate's life, er husband.
He played tennis, so it could’ve been he was good with his hands.
True!!@@girlgeniusnyc272
I know CBS allowed their actors to guest on other networks
Why are the captions behind by minutes ? Doug has had affairs. I really liked this show but, Kate is like June Cleaver.
I think the last family episode was about when there daughter Buddy went away to college.
*THEIR
Are they or do you think? They didn't as buddy was only 16 when the show ended
@@dlighted1277 Their - No need for capital letters.
Annie Laurie can't compete with Kate!
He cheated on her once before I under stand her pain.
With all of the casual drinking that went on in the 70’s , it’s not surprising that so much infidelity went on.
I love love love this show I sure do but why is it blurry I'm trying to find it in in another Channel Tubi is there anything you can do so it doesn't look so blurry
Oh boy she is a homewrecker ....
Men can be homewreckers too. Lol. It takes two.
@@janesandrahernandez5081 It takes 2!
I think it was that hotdog incident.
When people invited you in their home leaving front gate open like the lawerence home.
No hatred no violence in sweet pasedena ca...
I adored this neoghborhood which i had a home 🏡 in this block with sunny days and lush greenery... just perfect afternoons when family spent time together before video games and microsoft exploded and it all disappeared.
Why would the mother lie? "Everything is ok", "your father had to go right back out for work'. Tell the truth.
They all remember Doug having an affair with Margaret, Kate's best, many years before.
Buddy and Audrey = cuteness overload
linda lavin and kristy mcnichol were in a movie together, playing mother and daughter

Yes I saw that, really good. Led me to this show I never knew existed. Glad it did.
I just watched it too a few months ago. I was never a Linda Lavin fan but she had some good TV movies. I watched a few on youtube.
@@bluedragon4 I know I don't know what got me following her, maybe because I was in the mood to watch 70's, but she has her own YT channel and just put out this. Hilarious.

DVDs!!!!!!now!!!!
Buddy does not like Annie Laurie. She has good reason.
Ah, the 1970 something Ford Thunderbird.
Do you have the 1st season recorded that you can post. Thank you.
Someone else posted the first season before, but I think most of the episodes were removed.
Do you happen to have Coming if Age (from season 1)? It's the last episode I haven't seen from the early seasons.

There’s a new girl in town, and she’s...LOOK KING GOOD!
Alice!
A fresh freckled face in the neighborhood!
She was just passing through…..
Great.😀
Although Doug is in a committed relationship (he is human). People want to know that they are appealing and interesting. Marriage is very routine and we tend to get side tracked from time-to- time. The good was that Doug handled his situation very well.
Doug should have handled his marriage better by not playing with his wife's emotions!
@@ShawnBen Exactly...that was classic passive-aggressive manipulation
A Teenager making her own bed in the morning, Perish the Thought...
that's funny! it stood out to me too. ;-)
He didn't learn his lesson after Margaret?.. typical man, smfh
He most certainly didn't! None of these women look better than Kate !
He totally did not learn his lesson after Margaret. You'd think he would do a much better job of hiding his affair from Kate.
At 27:16 Doug shoves Willie out of the way haha
I really liked the character of Kate, although you could tell she had a problem with flatulence.
Haha!! How could you tell that??
Buddy looked like one of the teletubbies wearing that red shirt.
I love Buddy's shirt. : - )
❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
❤️
Annie was a bad influence on Doug.
And she had the worst New York accent I've ever heard.
Hahaha 😂
You are right about that .
Annie was a bad influence, and Kate had bad flatulence.
Kate had the shits more like it...@@scotth.9295
Buddy always listening sneaking.
