Happy birthday Bill 😊That Scot is a parallel boiler one as first introduced. They didn't get smoke deflectors until some time after the rebuild in 1942/43.
Happy Birthday! Lovely presents. My wife recently found a Bachmann split chassis Modified Hall in an antiques shop. Your video has kept me entertained as I run it in after giving the locomotive a service. Lots of horrible white grease around the worm and little white gear which was pretty solid. However after a bit of squooshing, a sparing amount of labelle 106, and a electolube it's just like new.
What a lovely Wife you’ve got getting something special for your birthday 🎉 Just shows with a little TLC and knowing what your your doing you can make old locomotives run better 🤩
Many happy returns! It's always a good feeling when SWMBO indicates a degree of acceptance for a chap's hobbies! But I'm on the edge of my seat waiting for the next sheep related incident...
Well there is a hatful of Scottish built examples named after Scottish Regiments . Early loco's were built without smoke deflectors and used the small Fowler tender, which was later replaced with a Stanier tender.
Many happy returns William. Hope you have a great Birthday. Seems like Mrs OO Bill knows what you like, Very nice surprise. Enjoy your Birthday together.
Hi Keith , no they had deflectors in LMS days when they still had the parallel boiler . Certainly when rebuilt with tapered boilers they had a different style of deflector
A very happy birthday, and two more excellent models! By coincidence, it was my birthday earlier this month, and I was very pleased to be given a Bachmann V3! We visited the Leicester Train Collector Society's show and came across the model for sale. A little hinting to my wife, and I had a very nice surprise on my birthday! It runs beautifully, and looks resplendent in LNER green. As you say, the axles are the main issue with these models, but spares are available, and even taking into account the £11 to buy the spare parts, you can end up with a very good value model indeed.
What a lovely birthday present, I hope it was a surprise. Best wishes. They are very nice looking locos with the J39 a standout I think. I have wondered what the 3D printed replacement axles are like. I have a dreaded Mainline Collett 0-6-0 tender where I had to superglue one of the axles, it's still holding up but it grinds around the track like a chaff cutter! I don't know what a chaff cutter sounds like but I'm sure it sounds like a Mainline loco 😄
Happy Belated Birthday fro Ohio USA, missed this yesterday. Every man should be so lucky to have such a wife!! I had never seen or heard of OO until I started watching your channel (just really getting into the hobby now that I have grandsons). I run N Gauge, due to room restrictions for layout. Just in the planning stages of the layout. Truly enjoy all of your content, so relaxed and informative.
Happy Birthday OOBill - lovely birthday present - I have two of the Mainline locos a BR Class Standard Class 4 and a J72 and sadly they both suffered wheel and axle degradation - the J72 gears also failed. It was such a pity since the loco bodies were generally of finer detail than the Hornby locos of the period. I attempted to convert the Class 4 to DCC but the spit chassis made that impossible! The Bachmanns that you have appear to be better designed in that the motors are not the Ringfield type that are in my Mainline models. Happy railroading!
Happy birthday Bill. Ha, I was 56 on the 8th March, so will have a wee dram tonight for you too. Seems I'm right in your demographic! I always look forward to your videos. Am in Dunedin NZ, so usually watch them with a coffee when I wake. Good place to start a day. So, thanks very much for the channel. Best wishes.
Wishing you a very Happy Birthday Bill . Enjoy ! I still have both those Bachmann locos except that my Royal Scot is The Gordon Highlander with smoke deflectors .
Happy birthday Bill! I have to say, that was a lot of grease you put on that worm gear - I think I would have wiped some off after running it for a second or two.
I did just that. Not everything makes the edit. However, this is a big gear and needs a lot of grease to work it into the thread. A lot flies off when the gear spins so I actually added more! I have an idea for better application though.
Happy Birthday bill. Lovely loco's n yes i got a lovely wife that treats me to my many hobby bits on bdays. My class 03 had a melted brush housing so at time it was hard to source replacement so i got a x7 hornby which was bigger then cut top part off split chassis to fit motor and swapped the worm gear over and after that it sorted it just need to make a better way to hold motor in as its just gaffer taped to test it
the 2nd generation bachmann in the dark blue glossy boxes had improved valve gear and wheels.i have a mint factory weathered paralell boiler scot .cosr me 35 quid from doncaster toy n train fare .had never been ran by the look of it and it runs smooth and slow.i have many old bachmann and they all run great .there are 2 that i would steer clear of .the b1's are not great and can be jerky runners and the j72. i have the scot a jubilee a j39 re numbered to a 52A gateshead loco and a wd re numbered to tyne dock .also 2 pannier tanks a 45xx and many more ...all run mint .great vid happy b day .
Happy Birthday, and a couple of lovely looking locos added to your fleet. They do run really quietly, I'd like to have go a doing the type of servicing you do, but its taking the wheel sets off and putting them back on correctly, gives me the 'fear', lol. Great running shots of your new locos too. All the best. Brian @ The Angels
Hi Bill, Happy birthday. Some very nice loco's there. My wife for Valentine's Day bought me a Bachmann Rebuilt Patriot. And you are right with a bit of TLC they rum very well. The slight wobble you mentioned may actually be down to the plastic wheel centres that Bachmann started to use on some of their models expanding and warping the wheels slightly. The Branch line Bachmann 4mt's suffered really badly from this. One of them wobbled so badly it kept falling over on bends. The only fix was to remove the plastic centres, manually straighten the wheels and paint the wheels black and make some wheel balances to replace the ones on the plastic inserts that had been removed. Once that was done unless you knew that the wheels had been modified no one would notice. The old Mainline wheels were actually better as they were solid metal and did not warp. Except of course for their far inferior push fit axels.
Happy birthday Bill, from me in Australia. I have a number of the split chassis Bachmann locos, and I’m very happy wth them. As you say, one of the biggest issues with them is the nylon axles splitting, but they’re quite easy to replace, which I’ve done on my A4 and BR Standard 4, and they both run well now. Thank you for your very informative videos, I look forward to more.
Happy birthday Bill. A lovely surprise. They run really well. Love the train cam, especially when it exits the tunnel and passes the head on train. Enjoy the running sessions. All best Marc
Very nice Bill, Ive got a J39 which runs fine ( These were an original Bachman release) The Parallel Boilered Royal Scots were originally released by Mainline. Happy Birthday btw 🙂
The J39 was perhaps the 1st Bachmann locomotive that I bought, the one I have is in LNER lined black livery. It goes get run now and again, but it would be a so & So to install a DCC decoder,!
Happy Birthday, Bill. You're quite a baby really - younger than my kids. I have several of the Royal Scots, both Mainline and Bachmann. My Dad's Dad drove them, so they have a particular appeal for me. My Granddad retired in the 1930s, so I stick to the ones he would have driven - un-rebuilt, parallel boiler, no smoke deflectors. As you say, the Mainline gears are terrible, and I've had to fit replacements. I find those push-in crank pins become unreliable after they've been in and out a couple of times - so watch out that one of the crank pins doesn't just fall out somewhere on your layout. That has happened to me, and finding a tiny crank pin somewhere amongst the ballast is no fun. Thread locker or similar will help to keep them in.
Most troubles I have had with Super Glues on metal have been due to the brittleness of the glue. There are RC car tire Super Glues with rubber and carbon in them. Perhaps those may work better for the plastic axle repairs?
Happy Birthday Bill. I just had a thought for your layout. Using that device that shuttles the train back and forth. Can you fit a end to end narow gauge single track to one of the stations. Just a thought.
What a lovely wife you have.... so your a wee bit older than myself I turn 57 in February. Just wondering if the superglued axles have held up to the test of time or did you replace them as this message is 2 years after you posted this video. Cheers from Melbourne Australia..
I've repaired a good few guitars in my time and the super glue and baking soda trick is a well known method of repairing guitar nuts. it's a good way to quickly fill small gaps in plastic but I've found it results in a poor bond. The issue with the split axles isn't so much the crack in the plastic it's the wheels coming loose from the axle. So you want a good bond between the plastic, the glue and the wheel. It's better to apply two coats of good quality cyanoacrylate and let it seep in than to instantly set it by mixing baking soda.
I've bought the bachmann j39 used on Ebay last year and it's an excellent phenomenal runny. No problems at points and crossings at all. I was honestly shocked how smooth it was. I wish I had the BR version. Mine is painted LNER. Yuck 🤮
Happy birthday bill dont disappear again as your video's are the best on youtube , learnt alot from you , also i have a hornby mallard that's not needed like new if you want it ill send you it for free msg me if you want it...
This is the sort of wife that everyone should have . Happy Birthday !
Happy birthday Bill 😊That Scot is a parallel boiler one as first introduced. They didn't get smoke deflectors until some time after the rebuild in 1942/43.
Dear Sir!
Happy birthday! Younger than me, by a few months, i'll be (just) 58 in 3 months...
Cheers from Brazil!

Happy Birthday Bill you have a very kind wife !
Well there is a hatful of Scottish built examples named after Scottish Regiments . Early loco's were built without smoke deflectors and used the small Fowler tender, which was later replaced with a Stanier tender.
I think I'll just get another Royal Scot at some point. Any excuse....
Lovely locos. What lovely gifts from the lady of the house. You have a gem there.
Many happy returns William. Hope you have a great Birthday. Seems like Mrs OO Bill knows what you like, Very nice surprise. Enjoy your Birthday together.
Belated Happy Birthday, Bill!
Nice presents!
Happy Birthday. If I remember correctly, deflectors were not fitted to the Scots until BR days when they rebuilt them with tapered boilers.
Cheers for that. Good excuse to buy another Royal Scot!
Hi Keith , no they had deflectors in LMS days when they still had the parallel boiler . Certainly when rebuilt with tapered boilers they had a different style of deflector
The original straight boilers look more handsome to my eyes. Especially without deflectors.
Many Happy Returns Bill!

@@oobill ok, thank you. I have not used it before but have seen it used on UA-cam.
Happy birthday!
What's the small valve-gear-like thing on the right side of the J39?
I think that's the expansion link.
Can you send/link pictures showing the wrongly oriented wheels?
Happy Birthday Bill, please don't rename "The Sherwood Forester" I served in them. I hope your J39 runs as well as mine!!!
Happy Birthday! Another interesting and informative video. Can I ask where you can buy the replacement axles? Thanks.
Ebay

Try Silver Tay Models on eBay for etched brass smoke deflectors.
