Wow, doesn't she look great? The last time a saw her run was well over 40 years ago with my dad. It was quite emotional seeing her make her way around your layout, pistons and con rods pumping away. Lovely locomotive Stephen. I have a couple of them, one an export model I found when working in Australia and the other I found in Paris! My childhood favourite is Duchess of Montrose which I was given as a child. It was three rail and had been very badly repainted in maroon. I had it converted to two rail in the ´70’s and repainted it in its original green livery in the ‘80’s. Still a favourite and will be one of the first out of its box when I get round to building a new 2-rail layout.

I never thought I'd get dewy-eyed over a pile of metal and plastic electro-mechanical bits and pieces that had been formed into a small replica of a steam engine. Good luck in building your layout. @@stephendavies6949 have a great trip! These old locos have soul - just like the real ones. I love the fact that when they were built in Liverpool, the real ones were still in service. I much prefer them to the super detailed China built models of today. I doubt very much if any of them will still be running as well as your City of London in 2080… Rob
@@robinforrest7680 That is true: the models today are built for a different market and a different time. And even though I never saw steam operating on the mainline during the BR days, they definitely have bags more character than modern traction, even though, we have to be honest, steam technology was pretty much obsolete by the mid 1960s. BR were struggling to persuade people to work on them. Gotta say, though: there's a decent amount of detail on the old girl. And unlike my newer models, none of it has fallen off! Good point regarding them being built whilst the real thing was still running.
Yes. Having seen most - if not all - of Bill's maintenance videos I do feel far more confident when I decide to "lift the lid" on my own locos. But not this one: it was far too precious. Very grateful to Bill for fixing her for me.
Greetings from Indiana USA. Thanks to your video I was able to resurrect a dead ‘City of London’ to smooth running condition from a dead shelf model that I thought would never run again. Same for a green 0-6-0 from non-operating condition. As you might guess, Dublo stock is very hard to find in North America so repair and servicing are the best alternatives to relegating these fine models to shelf display only.
The greatest, invaluable contribution you make to the model railway/ railroad hobby by means of your videos, Bill, is by driving out the fear of tackling overhaul, repair and maintenance of model locomotives. Those apprehensive or fearful about such tasks and doing harm to their treasured engines are reassured by your priceless videos “you can do it; have a go”. Slange Var and keep ‘‘em coming! 👍

Stupidly I changed the tender and front bogie wheels on it in the late 70s. Hasn't been run for 40 years or more but Im planning on retiring next year so hopefully will get it going. It absolutely needs remagnetising though...it needed that 45 years ago! I was wondering sbout contacting Bill but now hes done one. Ironically I also was given a (3 rail) BR 4MT 2-6-4 in very good condition around the same time. I've never run that or had a 3 rail set up though.

As a kid I always wanted the diecast metal Hornby 4MT , but that was out of the Christmas present budget unfortunately. Look forward to seeing you do one of those sometime, they used to run past my house on the way to Greenock Princes Pier.

I didn't see you check that the little ball bearing for the bottom of the armature stayed in the chassis. i hope that it didn't drop out while you were working on the loco.
Nice work. I must Sevice mine in the near future. Hornby Dublo had the smaller flanges so should run fine on code 100 track. Mine certainly does. Given that the City of London is 60 plus years old they really are great runners as Hornby Dublo 2 Rail came out in 1959. The layout is looking great Bill. Happy Modelling. Mon
The set came with what I think was code 100 (or whatever was the equivalent back then) track as it was much finer than the Triang Super 4 I had at the time. I recall buying what I think was called an "adapter track" at one point. In those days I had no knowledge of flange sizes etc. Now I do, and I have a couple of old Triang locos that just can't be run on new track due to their flange size. I get tempted from time to time to take a grinder to them, but haven't plucked up the courage to do so yet.....!
@@stephendavies6949 I have both Tri-ang Series 3 code 125 and Hornby/Peco code 100 layouts so run old and new locos. I have some of those adapter track pieces too. It would be a tricky job to grind the flanges down. Could Bill suggest an alternative approach? Or is setting up a small Series 3/Super 4 layout a better option?

How big is your layout? I’ve only ever built small layouts. (2 ovals 1 outside the other with interconnecting points). And that was a long time ago with a Princess Victoria, Triang and before that a 3 rail Hornby OO Sir Nigel Gressley . Any tips on a book for running a layout. I’m about to become a grandfather again at. 79 so perhaps boy or girl I can show the pleasure of model making an not just for show.
Not always no. If you are able to remove the magnet and keep the pole pieces touching each end of the magnet it shouldn't lose strength. So long as the magnet has enough strength and motor isn't running too hot then you don't need to remagnetise.
