  • A big, little-discussed problem in polygamist communities is racism. Moroni Jessop was surprised to encounter this among independent Mormon fundamentalists in the Salt Lake City area. He shares his experiences, and we also discuss a little-known Mexican history of the Third Convention in which a large body of Mexican saints broke away from the LDS Church. It turns out that racism is a reason many fundamentalists reject LDS Temple ceremonies now. Check out our conversation...

Moroni mentions the LdS church having polygamist familes in Africa in the 1980s. We in Community of Christ had a similar situtation with our members in Africa and India. We have always had RLDS Doctrine & Covenants section 111 requiring monogamy. But in the 20th century we had polygamist families joining the RLDS church in countries outside of the USA. The apostles in the field did not know how to handle that. At the 1972 world conference President/Prophet W. Wallace Smith brought an inspired document to the church that was voted in as section 150. It stated that we should accept the new polygamist familes in full fellowship, but the church developed policies that the husbands could not take any new wives after baptism and confirmation. Section 150 reiterated Monogamy as the church's only acceptable "Christian Marriage". The document asked the church to "bear the burden of the sin" but allow for "the saving grace of the gospel" to move forward.

Mormons are becoming arguably an ethnoreligious group, you actually see "Mormon ancestry" on DNA sites like MyHeritage, certain exclusion makes sense to me. Jews do the same thing where not just anyone can get in (though they advertise otherwise)

Rick , I agree with Moroni that earlier prophets spoke of dividing up the Endowment to fortify the Aaronic priesthood.
If what Moroni alleges about the method the AUB was pondering is accurate, I would like to ask them whether they actually have any authority, at all.
Celestial marriage is an ordinance of the Melchizedek priesthood. How can you give a couple their temple sealing, and then tell them they gave got to earn the Melchizedek portion of the Endowment????

Not everybody categorizes things like LDS do. I remind you that women do not need to be ordained at all to either Aaronic or Melchizedek priesthood in order to participate in a sealing, so I'd check your assumptions.

@@GospelTangents Women, like men, must receive the Aaronic and Mchizedek portions of the Endowment, and be clothed in the garment, and robes of the Holy Priesthood in order to participate in a sealing as a partner and party to it.
      What am I missing?

Just an aside from a non LDS person: the endowment ceremony is ancient and much older than Mormonism. The hardest part for LDS to accept is that the Priesthoods were actually held by women before Judaism was invented.
I know this will tweak many buttons, but I'm a punk rock Priestess, and if we're talking history, sometimes, outside perspective can enrich a tradition. That's why I, as non-lds, can accept and appreciate both Aaronic and Melchizedek Priesthoods. I know where they came from. ✨
