"Ahead of it's time" is so misused and over used. This game used pretty much the same fight system from KOF 2002 but in 2003. How is that ahead of its time? SVC Chaos looked and felt outdated when it was released. It was stiff, sluggish and slow. It was poorly received because of it. Compared to Capcom Vs SNK 2 which was released in 2001 with a fight system that feels smooth, fast and crisp and it still feels that way now. SVC Chaos gets worse with age.

Love how Demetri got a complete re-draw and not just pasted from Darkstalkers. What makes this game awesome is how the Capcom characters got the SNK touch - and we know, snk has a way of making their characters look menacing
SNK was very respectful with the way they treated Capcom's IP, the sprites are beautiful, specially Chun Li's, who is very stylish in this game. This was the last time we had a Ryu that looked like a proportionate human instead of a giantism patient made of 400 kg of muscle and a head the size of a pea. Funny enough, the worst sprites in the game are Athena's, who looks as if she came from an atari 2600 game, with no shades at all, just plain white color and yellow eyes. The scenarios were very bland, boring and lifeless, which is a shame coming from the same people that made the scenarios of the fantastic Garou Mark Of The Wolves. The gameplay however was a bit stiff, just as in Capcom Vs SNK, which is a result, I think, of the difficulty of balancing the signature gameplay quirks of each company. The frantic and pressure focused style of KOF would've destroyed the Capcom characters that are designed for a more deliberate ground control, so SNK had to tone down the agility of the combat to please the Street Fighter fans while preserving their identity. It's a comendable effort and hopefully we will see a new Capcom vs SNK in the near future, considering both companies are currently on a great roll.

I disagree with the stiff gameplay part. It is not due balance, cause the Alpha series(mainly the third installment of the series) being as much or even more complex and pressure based as any KOF game. This masterpiece would've been the pinnacle of fighting game, if it was made by 96~98 SNK...
Luis Debnath it would have been interesting if Ryu and Ken and their Street Fighter ilk could roll, run, and hop, hyper hop, and super jump as a real ADV KOF’98 gameplay speed. Capcom vs SNK 2 did an okay job with giving SNK characters, Capcom type Street Fighter gameplay, but the medium attacks of SNK characters (strong, forward) lacked a lot of combo ability. They were just pokes.

SVC Chaos is actually my favorite game of the Capcom SNK crossover fighters. My friend circle and I used to play this game religiously on the alongside Samurai Shodown V Special, King of Fighters 2002, Marvel vs Capcom 2 and Guilty Gear X2. A lot of people talk smack on SVC Chaos but it just had a charm to it.
Serious Mr. Karate is actually canon. The first time Takuma used the Mr. Karate alias was when he was being blackmailed by Geese Howard and forced to work as his enforcer. He did so using the Mr. Karate alias, and was the last boss of the first Art of Fighting. The persona became more of a joke after he was defeated and freed from Geese. So the (regular) final boss for SNK's side of SVC Chaos was basically AoF1's final boss (who was NOTORIOUSLY hard).
What I most liked it about this game was exactly -- as highlighted in the video -- the opportunity to see SF characters portraied in an SNK style. After so many iterations of SF II, it felt as a breath of fresh air to the characters' visuals. I really liked that.
I actually have good memories of this game. I loved playing KoF fans with Dictator and Claw because there's nothing like them in kof. A rough game, to be fair, but enjoyable.
They had this gem at a local laundry mat my mom use to take us to in my early teen years. Out of all of Capcom crossover games, this one hits different.
I love this game. The art style. The gameplay mechanics. The huge roster. Everything. I got for $15 brand new 11 years ago. One of the best purchases I've ever made.
This game was my indrocution to SNK games in 2011. I got it because it had MMZ Zero. I fell in love with the graphical style, reminded me of 90's pre-rendered style PC games. SNK characters looked so cool.
I'm glad this Street fighter series of videos has helped bring in so many more viewers to your channel! It's been quite fun to watch. I just recently played SVC Chaos my first time on an FPGA Neo-Geo (MiSTer), and have quite enjoyed it so far, besides the often cheesy and broken enemy AI. Akuma's air fireballs completely shut them down, usually though. heh
I remember seeing this for the Xbox in blockbuster when I was around 9. I didn't have one at the time but I had both CVS games and knew that I needed this one. 10 years later I remembered it that fateful day and rushed out and bought a copy and an Xbox. I was a little bit disappointed. The atmosphere was bland and nowhere near as exciting as the OG CVS titles. In more recent years I've come to appreciate it for what it was. I definitely liked the inclusion of Firebrand and MMZero. Definitely glad you covered this one. I was exited to learn more!
Man, if only SNK were able to release a game with Capcom characters earlier. Imagine a KOF 98 style game with their characters included. At least Capcom included the Advanced and Extra in their games. Would have loved to have to have seen SNK characters using the V-ISM gauge. Even if only for the fun of it.
Sf2 will always be my favourite fighting game, it's so iconic and playable throughout the years from the arcade, to the 16 bit consoles right up to the collections on modern machines. However I always thought that snk's fighters and character designs were a bit more cooler, alternative and maybe baddass for want of a better term. A bit like comparing pop music of the 90's to grunge and alternative rock.
@@andrewortiz9226 Because the NeoGeo was a much more sensible purchasing investment when you consider that one machine outlasted the CPS-1, CPS2, CPS-3, and NAOMI and just required an update to the marquee and a new cartridge to swap between games from as far back as 1990 to as late as 2003, making it far more appealing to the arcades of lower income areas in Latin America compared to the bigger budget Capcom and Acclaim dominating US arcades. Paying the equivalent of a few hundred US dollars for a brand new game makes a lot more sense than a few thousand if you can get away with it. To be honest though, even as an American who grew up with Street Fighter Alpha, 3, Darkstalkers, and MvC2, I honestly nowadays just find SNK's fighters to be more fun. Real Bout 2, Garou, and KoF 2002 are really something special.
Takuma found out the fishy business of the evil mr big that is why mr big kidnaps yuri and takuma sakazaki had no choice to work for mr big wearing a mask as mr karate, art of fighting 1 lore
good shit as always. when they brought this one to our arcade it was a big WTF moment, even more so after unlocking some characters. gotta love 256 colour hugo! stay fresh my man
Actually the Grand Front Step, Gaurd Blowback and Hard Knockdown Throw don't consume a full bar of meter. Its actually something like 1/8th of meter. Also the game has a Cancel mechanic as well, but it can only be done when the power meter reaches "Maximum". You can cancel specials into other specials or specials into supers. HK+LP or forward+forward on block is the Grand Front Step LP+LK or HP+HK are the Hard Knockdown Throw LP+LK when normal thrown before you hit the ground is air recovery HP+HK on block is the Gaurd Blowback and works like a CD attack in KOF but doesn't do any damage
I remember when this came out in my local arcade in 2003 and then a few months later I came across the exclusive Xbox version at my local game store. I instantly bought it at the $30 retail price and played it so much. I played many matches online via Xbox Live at the time. This game is so underrated and obscure. I wish I still had it. Love the art style, character selection, and the dialogue before matches.
Another legendary Mad history episode. Please let the fighting documentaries never end! My personal experience with this game. Little buzz when it came out. Later I played the ps2 version. It was an okay game, but some backgrounds really look dull, while others look amazing.
The art and roster of SVC Chaos were outstanding. I thought the sprites looked WAY better than the CVS titles. A shame the game wasn't more popular, but that's probably heavily influenced by the actual mechanics not being fantastic. I was personally especially fond of Serious Mr. Karate, and I loved the inclusion of Dimitri, Tessa, and Zero.
Wow, I had no idea Megaman Zero had been in a fighting game. Out of all the ones to be in, I did not even think this was a possibility. Also, the Mars people is another really surprising pick.
I know there must be some licensing issues, but I wish this game would get an ACA rerelease on modern consoles...along with Double Dragon, Kabuki Klash and Matrimelee.
That history was NECESSARY! I had no idea all that was going on behind the scenes at SNK, but that ending was the ultimate revenge. I'm so happy it came full circle
I own this for AES and I have fun with it. Its very unique and I can appreciate that and itt holds up well today. Its a classic 1 on 1 battle with lots of neat hidden characters you can play as with a simple directional combination in character select. Demitri FTW!! ive been playing fighting games for 25 years.
Beautiful 2D fighting games will forever look beautiful. This crossover would be awesome if this has the same stylized art design in higher definition with the fluid animation of street fighter 3: 2nd impact.
Didn't realise this didn't release in the states. Still got my ps2 copy, spent a drunken night (into the morning) playing this with two of my friends, it was my friend Dan's game and he sold it to me after I was putting a one sided beating on him and my other friend despite them playing and practicing it for a couple of weeks before I had even played it and for that I will always have fond memories of this game.
Great work, as always. But i think you need to update your playlists more often. There are so many new videos about the history of fighting games that weren't added to the playlist. Thank you for making my quarantine so much more enjoyable.
Thanks for deep diving on this. Its actually one of my favorite fighters for the reasons you mentioned towards the end. Seeing Capcom characters in that classic SNK pixel style is something I feel gets overlooked a lot. It's significant both from an artistic perspective and as part of the history of the industry. There isn't another instance where Capcom let its characters be reinterpreted in that way outside of Tekken Vs. Street fighter (not Street Fighter X Tekken), but of course that never ended up coming out. I actually bought a 33" Showcase Arcade with the PCB version of SVC Chaos in it to restore as a Classic MVS cabinet at home.
I love the art work on SNK vs Capcom Chaos and music and I like how this game has a darker feel to it!! I like when someone challenges you, the announcer says "Here comes a new Challenger" lol
I love playing this one on my PSP with cfw. Geese Howard is my favorite character & Red Aremer's stage looks amazing; Like it was ripped straight out of the Berserk anime.
I was so hyped for this game. Made it in top 100 in ranked on XBL. So many people cheated at high rank in that game. It was pointless to try to get higher. It would be some dude yelling a language I don't understand with lag for days. Also people hacked the game timer to 5 secs and spam fire balls. Also infinity supers. Still one of my fav game achievements of all time. I loved the sprites and music. Hope for a part 2.
18:40 It's BS that this never got a release on PS2 in the US. I remember back in 2005 (I think it was) when the game was available for pre-order on PS2 and then soon after the pre-orders were taken down.
Mr. Karate was intended to be an insult to ryu, From the game creator of snk. So capcom fired back with dan. The joke is that ryu(mr.karate) is Ryo's dad, to be defeated by Ryo in art of fighting 2. The creator of ryu was a guy who left the streetfighter 2 team to form snk.
Fun Fact: Some of the SNK character sprites created for this game, including Genjuro, Shiki, Athena, and Mars People, would go on to be featured in Neo Geo Battle Colosseum. If there's one gaming wish I could have granted, it would be to have a brand new Capcom and SNK fighting collaboration. I'd even ask for both Felicia and Cham Cham to be on the roster, but perhaps that's just asking for too many miracles at once! ;)
Capcom vs SNK is more polished but personally I think SNK vs Capcom is visually more interesting and those backdrops are spectacular! Plus the music rocks.
Why does everyone reverse the title and subtitle? Watch the game intro, it's clearly given as SVC Chaos: SNK vs Capcom. Also, Playmore IS SNK now, so to treat the game like it was made by a 3rd party developer is misleading at best. 8:56 What the hell? Wouldn't Terry know who Choi is by now? Even if the two have never canonically met, Terry is friends with Kim. I'd image Kim would have mentioned Choi and Chang at some point. I feel like that conversation would've worked better if Ken replaced Terry. It's amazing how 2D graphics tend to hold up well even if they are kind of low-res and crude, while 3D graphics look aged so quickly. As for me, I loved this game. I loved the KoF-inspired engine and I thought it played very well. I also enjoy the look of the MVS/AES sprites, so seeing lower-grade character models didn't bother me at all. Besides, while the sprites themselves may not look as nice as CvS2, they are animated beautifully. One that caught my attention immediately was Balrog (Boxer). Instead of simply bouncing in place like he does in Capcom games, here he has a kind of sway from side to side. It's a very minor detail, but it's kind of thing I appreciate when it comes to the look of a game.
When using charge characters like Guile, you hold back for 1 second before doing sonic boom. You hold down 1 second before doing a flash kick. It gets tricky if you want to charge "diagonally". You can either charge diagonally for a sonic boom but you can't use that charge for a flash kick or you can charge for a flash kick but can't use that charge for a sonic boom. It's hard to explain. At first it was confusing but I finally got the hang of it and it was fun. Now for Claw Vega/Balrog, you can actually charge any way you want. Like charging down for a second to do a rolling crystal flash or charging back for a second to do a sky high claw. Mr Karate has one charge move and you can only charge it diagonally. This game is one of my favorites. I think this game has the best version of Dan in any game.
Yeah thanks for covering SVC Chaos I am one of those who asked that you would so thanks. I thought the game was off when I first played on xbox back in the day cause I was so use to capcom graphics but appreciated it after a while and even more today. I still have my xbox copy.
Ironically this game got be back into 2D fighters on a hardcore level, back in 2003. More so because it was the newest game in the arcade at the time, and everyone was playing. It also got me deeper into the KOF series. Before then I had only played '95 on the PS1.
Ya gotta fess up. I loved this game! Always loved the art style. Really wish they would do a 2d foghter nowadays...capcom or snk working today in 2d hi def/4k would look amazing!! Nobody else has come close :)
Really enjoyed this video, and interesting (albeit sad) to learn about SNKs problems at the time. I enjoy playing SVC Chaos for the novelty value but it def feels rushed, even compared to early KoF games. Athena is great though, and mega OP :) Cool to know it’s quite an achievement this game was ever made.
Do you have any issue's with pulling of the moves consistently ? Compared to other fighters ? Or was that just me. I felt so let down by this particular version lol
I was in Akihabara in 2018, and I bought a Japanese PS2 just so I can play this game again. It's a shame SNK doesn't seem interested in re-releasing it. They could fix a few things while they port if over, and maybe slap a couple new character in while they are at it... easy. (Evil Ryu and Shadow Lady and well... anyone from KOF really. Ash Crimson and Kusanagi?)
I don't think it would've made much of a difference. The games SNK had on there never really seemed to take much advantage of the hardware. The were little more than Neo Geo games with snazzier backgrounds, but still using decade old sprites.
Serious Mr: Karate is one of the Coolest/Best SNK Bosses ever, I played MUGEN with 3rd Strike Shin Akuma and Serious Mr.Karate in 2v2 and it was soo much fun!

This game was my indrocution to SNK games in 2011. I got it because it had MMZ Zero. I fell in love with the graphical style, reminded me of 90's pre-rendered style PC games. SNK characters looked so cool.
I just got this game in today for the AES and it’s one of my favorites on the system. It’s has aged well but the prices hasn’t lol
Not gonna lie this was my first SNK game I played and even of it looks old it still holds a special place in my gaming heart
I loved this game. I entered a contest to win a SvC cabinet but I didn’t win.
Did you call Ryu "Pallette Swapped Ken" 😂😂 The disrespect!! 🤣😭😭 Great vids! 👍 I love this games art!!
Takuma wore that mask when he worked for geese howard
why do Mexicans love king of fighters better than Street fighter lol
KOF is better than SF. That's it.
Oh, and Geese was Mr. Big's boss too...so if people worked for Mr. Big, they worked for Geese. Simple.
My favorite CVS game is SVC chaos and CVS 2. 🐺💚💚💚✌
"Violent Ken"
Now that sounds like a sick move
I remember loving this game when it arrived to the arcades. I still go back and play it on occasion.
good shit as always. when they brought this one to our arcade it was a big WTF moment, even more so after unlocking some characters.
gotta love 256 colour hugo! stay fresh my man
7:39... A mysterious new character??? Mr Karate. Art of Fighting???
Actually the Grand Front Step, Gaurd Blowback and Hard Knockdown Throw don't consume a full bar of meter. Its actually something like 1/8th of meter.
Also the game has a Cancel mechanic as well, but it can only be done when the power meter reaches "Maximum". You can cancel specials into other specials or specials into supers.
HK+LP or forward+forward on block is the Grand Front Step
LP+LK or HP+HK are the Hard Knockdown Throw
LP+LK when normal thrown before you hit the ground is air recovery
HP+HK on block is the Gaurd Blowback and works like a CD attack in KOF but doesn't do any damage
What happened to it?
@@Batman-p7f I sold my entire game, movie, and music collection 7 years ago.
My favorite fighting game of all time. I own it on Neo Geo AES, PS2, and Xbox. It is simply fighting game bliss...
I played SVC Chaos arcade machine at peter piper pizza when I was 9.
Your videos are beyond in-depth and informative. The story of SNK's CEO reclaiming his own company back is a great feel-good story. Subscribed!
Did you ever play Art of Fighting?? Takuma wears the Mister Karate mask there
One of my all time favorite games... Do a video on history of KOF
Thanks for the video man. I subscribed because of how well this video was thoroughly researched.
Just wanted to say how much I love your history videos. I love how deep you get into the history. Please keep them coming! :D
You could say Serious Mr. Karate is based on the Art of Fighting 1 version of the character
Beautiful 2D fighting games will forever look beautiful. This crossover would be awesome if this has the same stylized art design in higher definition with the fluid animation of street fighter 3: 2nd impact.
SF3 was blocky 4:3, what are you talking about?
SF3 Second Impact features 16:9 and looks amazing.
A SvC Chaos 2 would blow everyone's mind. Imagine using ArcSoft cartoon style witch this rooster.
That would be a dream come true. Would outdo CVS2 in a heartbeat. Not to mention the roster they could work with, and the music library
I prefer this style of graphics if they were to do a sequel.
Thank you for covering this!!!
SvC Chaos! Yeaaaaaaaaa!
I love the art work on SNK vs Capcom Chaos and music and I like how this game has a darker feel to it!! I like when someone challenges you, the announcer says "Here comes a new Challenger" lol
:D was playing SNK vs Capcom yesterday on my homemade bartop :P
I love playing this one on my PSP with cfw. Geese Howard is my favorite character & Red Aremer's stage looks amazing; Like it was ripped straight out of the Berserk anime.
Same here on my AES ;)
Same here on my android tablet. With crt filters of course.
I love the SNK style animations.
We having a blast in fightcade with this game
Thanks so much for putting all this info together, really appreciate it. Solid research.
Loved SVC Chaos, the best versionof the orginal SNK and Capcom VS series before the sequel IMO. Such beautiful artwork and sprite work.
I love this game! I play it emulators all the time! I can never get past the second stage, though.
Eye rocky Iori gets me every time. hahaha
There are 2 Mr Karate : The original ( takuma ) and Mr Karate II : an older Ryo Sakasaki and he is on NeoGeo Battle Coliseum
Thank you for covering SNK vs Capcom!!!
SVC chaos was a game I really loved back in the day. I still play it online sometimes.
Isn't Xbox Live for the original Xbox gone?
@@Batman-p7f Online on mame, not Xbox.
Man I remember this game, I used to play it all the time at the arcade in the mall. I still remember the,"There's no escape fight!" Ahh good times
Yes! Thank you for doing this video.
SNK vs Capcom Chaos was a fun challenging game. It may not be as popular as Capcom vs SNK, but it's still enjoyable nontheless
Ironically this game got be back into 2D fighters on a hardcore level, back in 2003. More so because it was the newest game in the arcade at the time, and everyone was playing. It also got me deeper into the KOF series. Before then I had only played '95 on the PS1.
Yesssss TopHat covered it! Got a notification and instantly clicked on it.
Ya gotta fess up. I loved this game! Always loved the art style. Really wish they would do a 2d foghter nowadays...capcom or snk working today in 2d hi def/4k would look amazing!! Nobody else has come close :)
I remember when this first came out in USA arcades. First character I chose? MMZ style Zero.
Ah I see you are a man of culture as well
Great job
Really enjoyed this video, and interesting (albeit sad) to learn about SNKs problems at the time.
I enjoy playing SVC Chaos for the novelty value but it def feels rushed, even compared to early KoF games. Athena is great though, and mega OP :)
Cool to know it’s quite an achievement this game was ever made.
Do you have any issue's with pulling of the moves consistently ? Compared to other fighters ? Or was that just me. I felt so let down by this particular version lol
I liked this game and its art very very dark and subdued but its felt mechanics was definitely slower than SNK 2. Still a fun game tho.
Never forget the first time I saw ryu and ken running on neo geo hardware, it was like seeing halo running on PlayStation hardware in my mind
SNK Vs Capcom Chaos was okay but Capcom Vs SNK 2 on GC and PS2 is way better to me
I wish this game was made on the atomiswave arcade system instead on the neo geo
Not me, I own it on my MVS.
I don't think it would've made much of a difference. The games SNK had on there never really seemed to take much advantage of the hardware. The were little more than Neo Geo games with snazzier backgrounds, but still using decade old sprites.
It would look like kof XI .
Serious Mr: Karate is one of the Coolest/Best SNK Bosses ever, I played MUGEN with 3rd Strike Shin Akuma and Serious Mr.Karate in 2v2 and it was soo much fun!
I've always was left a strange feeling about liking this game . You hit the nail on the review
I love SVC games. 🐺👌💚💚💚🎮
The only ps2 2d fighter I couldn't get in the states
Tatsunoko vs. Capcom please
Happy to own the English AES copy!
I got a couple of SvC comics following the game story. The drawings are amazing
"Rye-oo", "Oroki", calling Mr. Karate a new character...
Sloppy.
