Honestly they probably should have opened with DFII, I don't believe that has a source port. That's the real elephant in the room here, anyone could buy the original for a buck and plug it in to the Force Engine, while you won't get the remade art or cut scenes, you're also paying 30 dollars for those things, kind of a hard sell on only 1% of the experience. For that price it's honestly kind of a bare bones package.
It ultimately depends on how much you value the work that's gone into the artwork and upgraded visuals. People pay $20/30 for Star Wars ports... so I think this is a fair price here given how much work has gone into it comparatively!

That isn't true. As mentioned in the video, all of the assets and art has been remade for this remaster. The reason why Halo feels so different is because it's a 3D game so the visual leap in terms of polygons and textures are always going to look better than 4k Sprites that are stylised!
I HATE Star Wars Dark Forces I HATE Star Wars I HATE First Person Shooter Games I HATE Remake Game I HATE Remastered Game I HATE Nightdive Studios I HATE Lucasarts Games
If you already own the game on Steam or GOG, there's little sense in buying this remaster, which is basically a source port plus a.i. upscaled textures and re-done cutscenes. But for those who are on consoles, or haven't bought it previously, it might be worth checking out when it goes on sale for like $5. $30 is way too overpriced. You're not buying a new game. Just a slight facelift on a 30 year old one, and one that modders basically already have done for free on the internet.

Your childhood sounds like mine, except that I was 8 or 9 for the first Dark Forces. Both Dark Forces games are actually the reason why I got into Star Wars. The original trilogy is not where my interest in Star Wars began. I was not interested in the trilogy until Dark Forces.
From what I’ve seen of the remaster, we already had a fan made one for years with "the force engine" for free. One bonus level and the vault section isn’t worth the high price
I HATE Star Wars Dark Forces I HATE Star Wars I HATE First Person Shooter Games I HATE Remake Game I HATE Remastered Game I HATE Nightdive Studios I HATE Lucasarts Games
The $30 pricetag does seem a bit excessive considering how the Dosbox-based original is 100% playable on modern systems. That said, I'm afraid that if you do insist on playing the game through in some sort of upscaled fashion, then this remaster is probably the only way you can do it without significantly butchering the experience. The DarkXL mode is or at the very least used to be up till recently severely bugged, I've heard people complain that it makes beating the game impossible and seems to render every Dark Trooper encounter easy as hell (whereas they're tough as nails in the original). There was also the fan project to remake the whole game in the Jedi Academy engine, but it never progressed beyond the very first level.
If you are having problems running the game on PC in general, I have a solution that you can also save some money as well. The Force Engine can upscale the game for you so you don't have to re-buy the game again for $30. You can thank me later.
I think that if you have already bought Star Wars Dark Forces from GoG there's not much reason to get this one unless you really REALLY wan't the graphical upgrade.
I really like this game. If you have the original game or get it for little money and then install The Force Engine (TFE) over it, you have the better game with free saving. The way the remaster is presented here, it has zero improvement on PC. At this price, it's really only interesting for console buyers.

0:06: Unfortunately not well ported for the PC. 0:10: Why the heck hasn't this been also PC rereleased? I wanna try it! 0:17: I rather recommend TIE Fighter: Collector's CD-ROM Edition instead. Maybe even TF Total Conversion for X-Wing Alliance with the Upgrade mod. - Surprisingly good game with lots of 90s era Legends fanservice, even if it's not as flashy as its spiritual successor Empire at War - Probably trash. - This is also a highly recommended title. Actually, Dark Forces has a story... you just need to read up on the manual and also get some tie-in novellas by one William C. Dietz; yes, the man responsible for Hitman 2: Silent Assassin and Contracts/Blood Money interquel novel Enemy Within, the Halo: Combat Evolved partial anthology novel The Flood and the much maligned Mass Effect: Deception. 3:49: Can add that Jedi Knight's FMVs have aged far better than the cringe of Rebel Assault II. Will also add that it has aged as well as Command and Conquer: Tiberian Dawn's up to Red Alert 2's (plus Tiberium Wars, if one is into that sequel). 7:02: Not as bad as Marathon Trilogy puzzle platforming, especially since you can't jump there. 9:12: ...Oh, yeah, environmental hazards like this are also a thing. The PDA problem should be easily remedied via a Week 1 patch or something close to that. 13:41: Good old Mission to Danuta, part of the well renowned Rebel Operation Skyhook. Yes, can agree that Rogue One is still a great film, but its stakes and nuances just easily pale in comparison with Legends' take on the Death Star plan thefts. If there's a huge flaw of this game: Kyle Katarn logically hasn't reached his memetically uberpowered Force attuned self yet, so no Homura Akemi'ng with fully upgraded Forcr Speed yet, power fantasiers. 16:36: patologTV would love this. If only the Monkey Island original duology Special Editions didn't need the necessity of fanmade Talkie Edition patches, due to the original graphics not having the voice acting without them. Just saying. And don't worry. Remasters that bring back the original feel are still around, as seen in the Command and Conquer Remastered Collection. Hmm, why does the Vault not look like they added the backstory and plot points from the manual+tie-in novellas that I mentioned earlier? Not everyone would want to get them so to read them, you know. Well, 100% Star Wars, many, *many, MANY* thanks for trying this out and giving the remaster a much hoped for positive review. Hope others like Civvie 11 may also recommend their viewers to this because of its helpfulness. Addendum: If anyone ends up liking if not loving this game, I also recommend LucasArts' Outlaws+A Handful of Missions, built from the same engine and maybe even story writing team.

Depends how much you value the title and your money haha. If you want to play it, with better visuals and controls then sure. If you'd rather wait for a sale then do that!
Between the inconsistant attention to visual fidelity and the complete negligence in remastering any of the sound effects or music, I'd say this was rushed to market in an unfinished state. Not worth the price tag that Disney set for this half-baked priduct at all - no matter how many pairs of rose-tinted glasses you are wearing.
It's a bit of a cash grab at $30 in my opinion for a repackaged old game, maybe $10 would be fairer. The retro MIDI music is brutal and way too loud by default. Opening the map often crashes on Xbox One and there's no menu option to exit the game. I enjoy retro gaming but think I'd avoid this all things considered.
WHERE IS IT??? One old school FPS game that has never seen the light of day on consoles, and which needs a remaster. Is also one most know nothing about, except for the older gamers. The game I refer to is ''Unreal''. This is the game that started the Unreal engine, the first one to use it. Most younger gamers know nothing about this game, never heard of it. Mentioning ''Unreal'' to them, they assume you're talking about the engine that runs tons of modern day games. Nope...it was the name of the FPS game which was the beginning of the Unreal ''engine''. It's an amazing game. Unreal 1-2 needs a remaster and brought to all modern consoles!
...That's the thing. Epic Games ruthlessly murdered it and Unreal Tournament 1999 and 2004 a long while back so to selfishly promote more *bloody Fortnite!*
@@michaelandreipalon359 Don't care about Tournament, not into online crap. Second, they didn't murder it. Unreal is an AMAZING FPS game. Never understood why it never came to consoles.
SCORE: 1/10 Loses nine stars for not having a manual save anywhere feature. This feature is extremely common with these retro FPS games, and to not have it in Star Wars is game breaking! Also the lack of a cheat menu is sad also. These were very common back in the day. But the no manual save issue is the worst. I hate gaining progress and not being able to save it. @@100StarWarsyour review reminds me of the first time I played Doom: which was very recently. This is my first time playing dark forces and the first level took me so long but loving the fast paced gun play.
Welcome to the boonies, kid. Hope you'll also continue with the sequels that follow progressively.
@michaelandreipalon359 oh yea, looking forward to dark Forces 2 but I played jedi outcast and academy. Both amazing! Star Wars games should be 10/10 after that game.

I have a Switch, a PS4 and a ps5. I know that the PS5 has the best graphics but my Switch is my favorite console so I’ll probably get it for Switch. I have played and beaten Jedi Outcast and Jedi Academy but I never got around to playing Dark Forces!
At $40 cdn, it's kind of a hard sell for me. I'm sure there are fans who wouid buy it at twice the price. Maybe if all the Jedi knight games were released as a package, $70-$80 would be worth it.
Gotta remember, unlike a lot of ports... a lot of work has gone into this to actually vastly improve thje visuals. It's not just upscaled and put on modern consoles.

tried playing the original last year but became too tedious with finding certain things, waited for remaster and its been much better visually
Tomb Raider remasters also have the the old/new look switch, wich is great!
I think I need to buy it finally, my first SW game that ingited a "second wave" of my SW fanboism.
Also I think a full remake of the "Catarn saga" would be great, especially if made by those who played and love thise games!
Never played it but I’m curious should I? My first starwars game was shadows of the empire on the n64
A flawed game, but otherwise still worthwhile for hardcore gamers and lore afficionadoes who adore the rest of the SotE multimedia.
Granted, I play it on the GOG PC port.

As cool as this is and how fast I clicked on the video when I saw it, I kind of wish they made it a true modern version of dark forces. I grew up playing this game and for me it’s right up there with halo CE in my heart. I think it would be amazing if they kept the same story but remade it as a modern FPS like halo (pre 343) or COD. I can only imagine what the levels would look like with todays graphics
Maybe if this game succeeds it's a tester for more? Food for thought...

@@100StarWars I was super excited to download this remaster when I got home from work after initially coming across this video. The nostalgia was perfect but I still stand by my original comment about wishing it was a true remaster with modern visuals, more detail to the story and maybe even a longer story with DLC. I know all that is setting the bar pretty high for wishful thinking but one can dream 🤷🏻♂️
I remember playing the demo on the pc. It came out with the demo to full throttle.
What i really want to know is if this remaster is better than the fanmade force engine overhaul
Well, unlike the Force Engine which just upscale things, all the assets and textures etc are brand new in the Remaster.

@@Ihatevideogames334 Cool, nobody asked for your irrelevant opinion.
Remaster was FANTASTIC.
I'm a big fan of the original, and was really looking forward to playing this remaster, but $30 is too expensive. I will wait until the price comes down.
That's fair!

To be honest the fact that this is more of an hd upscale and not a true remaster like the halo games got and i was hoping for is a bit disappointing am i still going to get it most likely as its the only game in the series ive never played because my computer couldn't run it
I really hope the rest of the series gets remasters too especially jedi outcast
That isn't true. As mentioned in the video, all of the assets and art has been remade for this remaster. The reason why Halo feels so different is because it's a 3D game so the visual leap in terms of polygons and textures are always going to look better than 4k Sprites that are stylised!

Saber Interactive is on sale. What will you say about that?

No issues with outdated mechanics, I replay games from 20+ years ago from time to time, some that also keep hard crashing rarely (both gothics)
£25 does seem a lot for one game remastered when Tomb Raider 1-3 remaster just came out for the same price
A fair point. I'd argue Aspyr probably under charged for that package though.
I heard about fan remake for dark forces. There was a first level. Outstanding physics, and if I'm not mistaken, it supported VR. (also, your vids stopped appearing in my recommendations)

@@100StarWars Force Engine is vanilla assets rendered in higher resolutions. Remaster is mostly a.i. upscaled with redone cutscenes.
Thank you for the review video 😙😙😙❤️❤️❤️
Expanded Universe >> Disney and Filoni Jabroni Verse
If you are having problems running the game on PC in general, I have a solution that you can also save some money as well. The Force Engine can upscale the game for you so you don't have to re-buy the game again for $30. You can thank me later.
OK
@@100StarWars The Force Engine is an alternative as a download to upscale the game’s resolution to HD.

One of the best. The likes of Outlaws exist, for one example.
Have you checked to see if the game codes work?
game codes?
There is cheat codes on the original, will they work on this version?
i never played the original game, i might buy the remaster
It's worth it!
Yeah the hard crashing is killing me…. On Xbox Series X, I’ve beaten the first nine levels and I feel like I’ve hard crashed around 10 times already.
Oof, same issue on Xbox with the PDA?
I think that if you have already bought Star Wars Dark Forces from GoG there's not much reason to get this one unless you really REALLY wan't the graphical upgrade.
I really like this game. If you have the original game or get it for little money and then install The Force Engine (TFE) over it, you have the better game with free saving. The way the remaster is presented here, it has zero improvement on PC. At this price, it's really only interesting for console buyers.

$30 is a steep asking price.
It is, but unlike a port from say Aspyr... this is a remaster with a lot of work gone into to it to redo much of the game's artwork.
@@100StarWars how much would you blame the Disney Star wars attachment to the price being that high?
0:06: Unfortunately not well ported for the PC.
0:10: Why the heck hasn't this been also PC rereleased? I wanna try it!
0:17: I rather recommend TIE Fighter: Collector's CD-ROM Edition instead. Maybe even TF Total Conversion for X-Wing Alliance with the Upgrade mod.
- Surprisingly good game with lots of 90s era Legends fanservice, even if it's not as flashy as its spiritual successor Empire at War
- Probably trash.
Owned and played the heck out of 95 collectors CD rom, but I hear Dosbox messes up the internal timings of events and Imuse functions.

Depends how much you value the title and your money haha. If you want to play it, with better visuals and controls then sure. If you'd rather wait for a sale then do that!
They need to remaster The Phantom Menace from ps1
"Modern 4k designs", shows a sprite that's 128x48 instead of 64x24
Between the inconsistant attention to visual fidelity and the complete negligence in remastering any of the sound effects or music, I'd say this was rushed to market in an unfinished state. Not worth the price tag that Disney set for this half-baked priduct at all - no matter how many pairs of rose-tinted glasses you are wearing.
Shame you can't enjoy it.
@@100StarWars Oh, I could enjoy it still - if it was only $10 I'd overlook the sloppy workmanship.
It's 10% off now I believe. So there's that haha
I am thinking of buying this game. Is it worth the grab?
Really depends. Do you feel the price for a remastered 90s shooter is worth it to you?
I mean it looks interesting. I did play and finish Prodeus so why not :)

Loses nine stars for not having a manual save anywhere feature. This feature is extremely common with these retro FPS games, and to not have it in Star Wars is game breaking! Also the lack of a cheat menu is sad also. These were very common back in the day. But the no manual save issue is the worst. I hate gaining progress and not being able to save it. Then die and lose it all.
