AC Jester Depends on how you use your phone. Most phones even now average at about 5 hours of screen on time, which is pretty much the same for the S4 back when it came out.
I have lineageos 14.1 istalled and it's okay I guess. After they stop supporting this rom then I'll upgrade to lineageos 15 lol
@@YoStu242 actually after seeing this video, I dusted out my galaxy s4 and installed Android 9 Go Edition on it 😁.. But truth be told it's not exactly smooth anymore and the battery seems to drop like a stone. Phones have indeed come a loonggg way and it's no longer viable to keep the galaxy s4
in technology it kind of is. i mean if you compare the size to modern flagships or the software or even the camera. still a great device but if compared to say a galaxy s8 it is a massive difference
YourTechGuy It's not dangerous if you know what you're doing, having a backup is the first thing one should do. Also, it might be better these days but something like LineageOS or Resurrection is just so much smoother
Not really. He should actually get the S7 Edge (exynos) as it's overpowered for 2016. He should get in 3 years the S7 Edge. Keep in mind that except for the 2016 S7 (edge) Exynos there was no phone that could even come remotely close to it's performance. Even in 2017 except for the Exynos Galaxy S8, OnePlus 5 and the Huaweai Mate 9 there are ZERO phones that get close to it's performance (iPhone's stand no chance at daily applications against the S7 Edge). I expect in the next year that the highest-end phones finally will have caught up with the performance of the S7 Edge...but that still leaves the camera. The S7 Edge STILL has a camera that far outperforms EVERY smartphone as a whole package (except for the Galaxy S8). This means that the S7 Edge will probably get equals AFTER 2 YEAR OF IT'S RELEASE. Think for a second about it's display. What smartphone except for the Galaxy S8-series comes even remotely close to the display quality of the S7 Edge? There is NONE. Nothing gets even remotely close to it's display brightness, clarity and outdoor visibility. The S7 Edge goes up to ~1150 Nits. The BEST LCD-smartphone, the iPhone 7 Plus ONLY goes up to ~600Nits. For an LCD that's amazing but as all reviewers say, it simply doesn't compare against the current OLED-equipped Samsung smartphones.
The main difference is that S4 has an user-replaceable battery while Galaxy S6 and newer don't - and batteries in years-old used smartphones tend to be in poor shape and require replacing.
The S6 is an insanely good 'budget' phone nowadays. Assuming you're looking at incredible used condition, since new is still expensive. You can find them in Canada around 250$ at the 32gb base model. And Ebay even sells refurbished ones for 175$ :p
Dragos Mihai Absolutely true. With each new year iPhones are getting slower. Newer ones not even have an headphone jack. And you have absolutely no control on your phone beside the App Store. You can't custom them. Pay 100$ more for 32gb more. Yeah, iPhones are worthless.
I know, I have an S6 myself, got it a few months ago. And yea, no SD card isn't a big deal. I have the 32gb model and consistently have 10gb free, even after all my music and apps. I just offload the camera once a week. Battery life, yea it sucks, but the fast charger is so damn fast that it doesn't bother me. I could come home, plug it in while I take a shit, and take it off with 40% more battery after barely 15 minutes. And yea, the G5 is absolute garbage in comparison. Extremely buggy phone and there's a massive chance you'll get the unfix-able permanent boot loop that's caused by hardware degradation.
I'm holding a Blu r1hd, like the one that has 2gb of ram, you know, that phone that Amazon had sponsored, so there are a butt load of ads. Yeah that shitty phone with a 2500 mAh battery. Sigh, I'm so poor.
I'd go for the S4 and install Lineage OS (Android Custom Rom company that is supporting the S4 with Android 7.1.2). Then you are getting the best hardware with the best software.

I used an Xperia Z2 from 2014 to 2018 till the battery and screen went weird. I honestly didn’t feel like I was missing out on anything I would get with a new phone. Getting an older flagship is a really good budget option for phones.
Hey Austin, I was wondering if one of your upcoming videos can be about all the ways to customize your laptop for better perfomance. What do we need and how to do it! Thanks
I wanted to say the same thing. I own an Oneplus 3T now but my Nexus 5 still rocks in the hands of my father. It has pretty much the same hardware as the S4 with the advantage of stock android.
Or you could get the 2016 LG G5 for $95... why does no one know about this phone now? It's competitor, the Galaxy S7 Edge 2016 is like $250, which is wayyy cheaper than the IPhone 6s or 7 (which competed with both these phones), but even this looks expensive to the now dirt cheap G5. So you can get an LG G5 2.5x cheaper than the already cheap Galaxy S7 Edge (cheap compared to Apple's competition), with the same internals and resolution. And yes, I already liked my own comment. ;)
Yo Austin, I really like you showcasing these old Flagship devices BUT I really dont approve you not even mentioning LineageOS (successor of CyanogenMod). Take basically any flagship phone of the last couple years and throw LOS on it (also especially the flagships are usually supported for along time compared to random noname phones) Boom enjoy the lastest and unbloated Android 7.1.2 which works perfectly fine
Especially if you are one of the people who dont need gaming performance etc because of the little bit dated CPUs, this really is the way to go if you are on a budget and you need a solid daily driver. CPU power of the old flagships is more than enough for browsing, social media etc
The GS2 is incredibly old and had the crappy Exynos chipset, meaning it was not developer friendly at all. My GS4 Mini with LOS 14.1 sans gapps is buttery smooth.
@@TravisM2234 I actually know a case where someone put Android 11 I belive on the Samsung Galaxy S4 and he used it as a daily driver, and I used to use a Samsung Galaxy S5 with Android 11 too, it isn't as bad as you think, considering most low end phones now a day come with 2gb ram and lower speced procesors and still run kinda fine.
The lg g2 from 2013 is really cheap and it has Android 5. If you know a little bit about rooting you can even flash some Custom camera software and even record 4k video. It has got a quadcore 2.7ghz and is a really good Phone.
I actually have an S4 Mini with a custom 7.1 ROM. (It's not as nice as the full S4, but it's the best 4.3" phone I could find for Verizon) If you're willing to use custom ROMs, I'd say the S4 actually could come out on top for support over the Blu Life Max, just because it's more likely that the community will continue supporting it. Plus custom ROMs tend to be very much stock-like. Of course, if you want to stick with official firmware, then yes, I'd have to opt for the Blu Life Max, because Nougat is so nice!
inwoo park But he made the video now, in 2017. He is telling us about galaxy s4 in 2017. Not 2013. And again, most apps that people use, like Facebook, UA-cam, Instagram and all other except some new games are available for 4.2.2.
I have a Samsung Galaxy s4 Lying around my house and I decided to use it and see how much Android has changed from then and when I charged it to 100% it went really quickly in about half an hour!
For all Indian viewers watching - Fair warning! The S4 and S5 are absolutely awesome phones and have great displays with superb cameras. But almost all their models don't have 4G/LTE and definitely not VOLTE. Dont get them if you want VOLTE or 4G support. They are great secondary devices though.
Mukul shah ya there might be some carrier model that has these bands, but most of the phones that are sold at throw away prices on reputed ecom sites as well as sites like eBay do not even have 4G. So it's good to do some research before you buy.
Mukul shah dude, it's obvious you have first hand knowledge of using 4G/Lte on an S4 variant. My comment was made to ensure people don't get fooled by sellers who cleverly hide the band Details. Till now there are people who don't have any clue about VOLTE. Chill.
Vijay B Ikr. I am using my Note 4 now which still doesn't have LTE! (Asia Pacific, SM-N910H, except Singapore) So I bought a OnePlus One for $120 and almost completely moved to it. I only use my Note 4 for media consumption because it's a 1440p OLED display.
Well the S4 has a much less battery friendly Snapdragon 600 1.9ghz Quad Core. Snapdragon 8xx series didn't even exist until some months after this phone came out.
I had a BLU phone for awhile. The phone itself was mostly okay, but the reason I didn't keep it around was the GPS. It was horribly inaccurate. I'd be driving down the highway and the phone would think I was floating down the river - several thousand feet away. I'm not sure if it was just a bad phone I got, to be fair.
Samsung S4 had 2 cables, charging cable and USB. There was nothing like adapter. You just had two cabled as Nokia used to have but with the difference that it was microUSB cables. Samsung S4 was the best. (I had Terend plus but it's same as S4) Android version 4.22 Jellybean was the best andoird version I'Ve ever used. I didn't try Android 8 so let me know if you think it's better than 4.2.
I'm watching this on my Galaxy S8+. I went from the S4 to S8+, I jumped 4 generations ahead. Quite an improvement! Got this as a black friday deal for the price of almost $350 or $20 a month for 24 months. Great deal. The S8 was $15 a month but I went for just another 5 buck anyways for the S8+. And best of all I get to keep my S4 as a spare phone for traveling when switching for the sim card because right now I'm only paying for S8+ monthly and not unlock, but S4 is unlock therefore, I can use that for calling or texting as a backup phone for traveling.
Actually not... A s4 is a hot toaster phone that has tons of possible deffects that may happen all the time, many caused by the heat. Better off getting a gs3 4g lte (i9305) and update his android with custom roms. No overheating and except for the usual battery deffect that all samsumgs have. The blue isnt a good option, its usually a egg shell (really really weak), and hard yo find parts, root or even dont have any tutorials for dissassemble or anything like that, because it isnt mainstream. So suppor is pretty non existant.
Worth to install is maybe 3%, most of custom roms has bugs who show up when you need your phone. And imo stock camera app in samsung are the best and fastest and best video guality in custom they give you shitty replacements who dont use your phones in 100%. Maybe if custom rom its little bit faster and smoother but for what price if band of indian students made it.
I took my brothers s4 when he got a new phone since he was complaining that the battery ran out too fast and it was too slow. I factory reset it, got new launcher and lock screen, and now it's awesome
Comparing this to the IPhone 5s, another smartphone from 2013 that costs around $100, I think the S4 loses and Apple is the clear winner. Yes, the 5S is smaller, but it is still ofically supported by Apple with IOS updates and has better app optimization than android. Although you weren't comparing the two, that is my takeaway
Laggy, but it's still surprising to see that Apple still supports it. While you could say that they only keep updating it to force you to upgrade due to lag, you'd have to upgrade anyway due to apps not supporting older IOS versions
My parent's Galaxy S4's lasted over the two year mark, which was very impressive. My Galaxy S5 is doing pretty well, currently, just like my Galaxy S III two years ago
I'd get the S4 and install LineageOS. The good thing with popular devices is that most of them can get unofficial software support and for the BLU, I don't think you can get much support from the manufacturer or custom rom makers.
Used an S4 for three years, these were the pros and cons: + gorgeous screen + fast processor for games + removal battery with 2nd battery and external battery charger included (Korean version) - long load opening camera app - UA-cam app never worked on it - laggy TouchWiz I still have the phone though and a recent patch fixed all the problems above. But for three years, I struggled with those problems. =(
Bought an used S4 a week ago for some $70, first thing I did was flash a custom ROM based on Android 7.1.2. Works like a miracle. Meanwhile, my previous phone was a new (at the time) "budget" phone for about the same price - poor build quality, no way to find a case for it, no way to find a good screen protector, battery replaceable only in theory because - you guessed it - couldn't find a battery anywhere. No custom ROMS because nobody bothers with phones like these, so I was stuck with KitKat for the whole time. IMO it's better to buy an old used flagship - as long as you can replace the battery - than to buy a new cheap phone from an unpopular company with zero community support.
Is this video just an excuse to show the clip at 0:38? Maybe.

I whould buy the Samsung Galaxy S4 because Lineage OS is still a thing and I can put newer Android on it.
Yes u can
@@TravisM2234 I actually know a case where someone put Android 11 I belive on the Samsung Galaxy S4 and he used it as a daily driver, and I used to use a Samsung Galaxy S5 with Android 11 too, it isn't as bad as you think, considering most low end phones now a day come with 2gb ram and lower speced procesors and still run kinda fine.
The lg g2 from 2013 is really cheap and it has Android 5. If you know a little bit about rooting you can even flash some Custom camera software and even record 4k video.
It has got a quadcore 2.7ghz and is a really good Phone.
Using an LG G2 with LOS Android 7.1.2, works perfectly fine!
Sergej Gupta yea it just is a great phone. Way better than samsungs of that generation.
Capagis so true
I use a G2 mini ^^
The s4 is a monster for $100
On eBay they go for $15.... Not bad at all. I got one for $12 myself (cracked screen) and it was defiantly worth it
lies ^
s4 is cheap as dirt,it costs 60 bucks... way better than the j1 ace
I am using one an its good but i dont like custom roms cuz i dont like root cuz i am a nub. (pokemon go still :p)
I just picked up a new iPhone SE for 150$. I think it's a pretty good deal hbu
Give me 1 app that is used by majority of people and is not supported on Android 5.0.1
this question confuses me
Mashal Khan Austin said that you will hardly find apps for s4. And I disagreed. 5.0.1 is supported on all apps currently out there.
inwoo park Why would anyone use it without updates?
inwoo park But he made the video now, in 2017. He is telling us about galaxy s4 in 2017. Not 2013. And again, most apps that people use, like Facebook, UA-cam, Instagram and all other except some new games are available for 4.2.2.
Igor Nikolic pornhub
S4. My backup s4 on lineage 7.1.2 is smoother than my s6 on 7.0 tw
AAGamer That's because TouchWiz suck.
Taner Ali yes but just saying an s4 is perfectly usable in 2017 with a rom. It gets better battery than my s6 too
AAGamer Maybe, but what about the burn in? It has an older sAMOLED technology that is more prone to burn in (than newer Samsung S6, S7, A5(6) etc).
Taner Ali. No noticeable burn in for me and its quite an old phone
AAGamer TouchWiz is not bad as you think,GS6 user
I have a Samsung Galaxy s4 Lying around my house and I decided to use it and see how much Android has changed from then and when I charged it to 100% it went really quickly in about half an hour!
My s4 had an IR blaster. Something my s7 is missing. Doesn't help that I lost my TV remote so I always relied on my s4 for volume control!! 😭😭
Yeah why is that gone it was a very useful
@@arkethel the s6 had it too
U have the tv buttons lol
Dude , you can download that from samsung from play store. Is called Peel Remote
@@nicuclashroyale6037 but u can only use it with Smart Tvs
Galaxy S5 is still pretty good. It's camera is still great, better than most budget phones
Main difference is the software?
You're absolutely right, my s4 is running Android 7.0 and that BLU is running 6.0.
Custom ROM FTW
I watched this video on a Galaxy s4
i watched this video in another galaxy
For all Indian viewers watching - Fair warning!
The S4 and S5 are absolutely awesome phones and have great displays with superb cameras. But almost all their models don't have 4G/LTE and definitely not VOLTE. Dont get them if you want VOLTE or 4G support. They are great secondary devices though.
Vijay B a normal S4 might not have 4G LTE support, but S4 advance support its Very well
Mukul shah ya there might be some carrier model that has these bands, but most of the phones that are sold at throw away prices on reputed ecom sites as well as sites like eBay do not even have 4G. So it's good to do some research before you buy.
Vijay B I used S4 ADVANCE I know what I am talking about . Ya it's a bit hard to come by S4 Advance .
0:08 The *hotest* flahship from 2013...
That part describes it so well...
LG G 2 was better
@@dusanstankovic5545 I think it's supposed to be a joke.

u should have updated the s4 to 5.0.2 first!
And you didn't took the plastic of the s4's camara lens!
Exactly why did he start of saying you can update it then use the ancient software as a negative 🤦
I was hoping that you would mention the chipsets of both phones...
Rockmanu he did . Just not their names or how they perform .
Man Dude but that's exactly what I wanted to know lmao
Well the S4 has a much less battery friendly Snapdragon 600 1.9ghz Quad Core. Snapdragon 8xx series didn't even exist until some months after this phone came out.
I had a BLU phone for awhile. The phone itself was mostly okay, but the reason I didn't keep it around was the GPS. It was horribly inaccurate. I'd be driving down the highway and the phone would think I was floating down the river - several thousand feet away. I'm not sure if it was just a bad phone I got, to be fair.
Hey Austin guys here
I have review fake galaxy S4 in my UA-cam channel ! Checkout Now plzz😊😊
I feel that you copy paste every script for every episode
Samsung S4 had 2 cables, charging cable and USB. There was nothing like adapter. You just had two cabled as Nokia used to have but with the difference that it was microUSB cables.
Samsung S4 was the best. (I had Terend plus but it's same as S4) Android version 4.22 Jellybean was the best andoird version I'Ve ever used. I didn't try Android 8 so let me know if you think it's better than 4.2.
My Daily Driver Right Now Is My Samsung GS4, It Does All The Job Done And It's Fine.
I'm using an s4

Hey im still using my samsung galaxy s4 active to watch this video..and i wanna use this phone till year 2020..And its still running smoothly.. :/
Hey guys i'm not Austin.
I had to go back and pause on that YPmobile app
why didn't he update it to Android 5.0 ?? the update is available and worked fine mine
I'm watching this on my s4, running Android 5.0 Lollipop
I'm watching this video on my blackview a9 pro running android 7.0. It cost $127.00
Samannay Bose watching this on my S8 with Nougat but my S5 is stuck in Lollipop 😢
A display from a phone from 5 years ago that costs $100 now, still beats the iPhone XR that costs $750 with its display.
Uh. No it doesn’t
S4 > Blu

What's the answer??? It says, "Is the best $100 Smartphone from 2013?
Jayvin Lopez yes
Oh yeh yeh
I'm still rocking the S3. Had it since January 201, got it used and it still works fine. The only problems are games.
With custom roms it's overheated piece of shut but on latest tmobile Austria stock Rom is very good phone with normal temp
blu not blue
Worth to install is maybe 3%, most of custom roms has bugs who show up when you need your phone. And imo stock camera app in samsung are the best and fastest and best video guality in custom they give you shitty replacements who dont use your phones in 100%. Maybe if custom rom its little bit faster and smoother but for what price if band of indian students made it.
Team Samsung win again

I took my brothers s4 when he got a new phone since he was complaining that the battery ran out too fast and it was too slow. I factory reset it, got new launcher and lock screen, and now it's awesome
Comparing this to the IPhone 5s, another smartphone from 2013 that costs around $100, I think the S4 loses and Apple is the clear winner. Yes, the 5S is smaller, but it is still ofically supported by Apple with IOS updates and has better app optimization than android. Although you weren't comparing the two, that is my takeaway
Theo Stadick just get a rom for android 7 and not have a 4 inch display
5s screen is shitty if u update it .. it will lagg so bad.. not to mention battery life bruhh S4 all the way
balballlab tell me how ur going to use ios 11 on your iphone 5s
Laggy, but it's still surprising to see that Apple still supports it. While you could say that they only keep updating it to force you to upgrade due to lag, you'd have to upgrade anyway due to apps not supporting older IOS versions
Judothesurviver 99% of people use phones for facebook...spotify.. Etc those apps are still supported on even ios 7
watching this on S3
Iliana Lazari watching this on a Nokia 3310 the legend
Watching it on mobira cityman 900
Lol that was a joke, I mean, I watch it at Motorola dynatac.
Do all the apps still work??

S4
The Galaxy S4 still has a super active community. There are many custom roms if you want to install latest Android
Hey guys this is as old as the ps4
i know someone at school who still uses this lol

My parent's Galaxy S4's lasted over the two year mark, which was very impressive. My Galaxy S5 is doing pretty well, currently, just like my Galaxy S III two years ago
IM STILL USING AN S3!

GoomyEyes I'm using an s3 mini 😁
I still have my samsung galaxy s5 in 2019
I have one and love it!
Just make sure to keep it on android 4.4.2 kitkat
I'd get the S4 and install LineageOS. The good thing with popular devices is that most of them can get unofficial software support and for the BLU, I don't think you can get much support from the manufacturer or custom rom makers.
The last time i was this early, VIA still was a Competetor in the CPU market..
Watching on my Galaxy S4
Used an S4 for three years, these were the pros and cons:
+ gorgeous screen
+ fast processor for games
+ removal battery with 2nd battery and external battery charger included (Korean version)
- long load opening camera app
- UA-cam app never worked on it
- laggy TouchWiz
I still have the phone though and a recent patch fixed all the problems above. But for three years, I struggled with those problems. =(
I miss my s4 Active I got from At&t
awsomeboxhead I remember wanting an S4 Active so badly at the time, but I haven't had the money for it back then :D
Watching this video by me old S4 :")
I used to have my S5 for years but it died tragically not long after upgrading :'(
Bought an used S4 a week ago for some $70, first thing I did was flash a custom ROM based on Android 7.1.2.
I am using a Samsung Galaxy Core rip
Terry Whittaker i had one for 2 years, since 2014, now using a a5 2016 :)
