He probably would have increased his draft stock greatly if he stayed. Miami was a much better team the year after he left, but their bad QB play really cost them when playing against stronger competition

I remember this guy was being considered for the Heisman his senior year. And the hurricanes got to be ranked #5 in the country that year. That loss to FSU was the tipping point that season to see whether the hurricanes were championship material or not. I think the reason he was a good college QB was because of the running game of Duke Johnson and Dallas Clark that season. Also the Defense was stacked at DB with Perrieman McCloud and Quarterman at LB. But he was a good game manager that’s bout it.
Kaaya had the same problem tons of good college QBs have. He can't process information fast enough when there's a pass rush coming at him. Given a clean pocket, he's Dan Marino. I've been a Miami season ticket holder for years and I've seen pretty much every game he played in college. He made throws that literally made me say "wow" out loud. But if his protection started to break down, even a little, he would panic and either force a bad throw or crumple up and take a sack. A lot of people blamed his lack of running ability but there's plenty of good QBs who aren't fast. They just make fast decisions with the ball. Kaaya couldn't do it. He signed with Miami to play in a pro-style system and when Mark Richt tried to install a more modern, RPO based offense his junior year, he left school for the pros. He might have improved his draft stock if he'd stayed for a senior year but I don't think he'd ever be an NFL QB.
The Bengals claimed Kaaya off of waivers from the Colts ~Feb. 11, 2019. His contract expired a month later (Mar. 12) and apparently Cincinnati didn't offer him a new contract. I don't think he ever had the chance to put on a Bengals jersey. That appears to have been it for Kaaya's football career. Five years on, and it seems he's now making his mark as a screenwriter.
I’m a die-hard Canes fan and I can confirm you’re correct he wasn’t. He put up some nice stats but couldn’t win a bug game to save his life and had absolutely 0 mobility in the pocket.
Kaaya was 1 of the Best Pure Pro Style QB's ever at MIA. But he was horribly slow and should've never left early but what hurt him the most was nvr having a top D, Al Golden wasn't a real D1 or FBS Head Coach and the O-Line was avg on it's best days.
Bj Daniels is worth a video. His first start was usf first game vs FSU in Tallahassee which was bjs hometown and that school had rejected him and you just need to watch that game because it is powerful

Why? His stats were good and he had a 150 qbr as a junior. Whether he waited another year or not, He would’ve had to go through the nfl pre draft process which would have revealed the same concerns/doubts teams had about him as a junior.
He should've stayed for 2017. 'Canes won 10 games that year and might've won more since he was a much better passer than Malik Rosier (although lacked his mobility). To Kaaya's credit though, 9 wins with Richt was close to the high water mark for us, so I can't really blame him for thinking that was the highest they were going to climb.
Some guys are Great College players (Ken Dorsey, Gino Toretta & Craig Erickson) while others are Great Pro players (Kosar/Testeverde) while Kaaya was in between. Leaving early killed his Draft Stock, I'd also never watched such a slow footed QB and having a bad Def hurt.
