  • "Know yourself”. This is the meaning of the Four Temperaments. They are the foundation of K9s 4 America. Every aspect of what we do is built on this 2500-year-old philosophy. Here we introduce the 4 basic temperaments. The Four Tempers are choleric, sanguine, melancholic and phlegmatic. The Greek philosopher Socrates used and taught these as an axiom to his students. Understanding and being fully cognizant of the K9s temperament will allow the handler to be able to understand the K9s innate self. This is Temperament Diagnosis 101, the first in a series on the Four Temperaments.
K9s 4 American is a non-profit company that helps provide service dogs to veterans and law enforcement.
    Our Mission
We enhance the safety and improve the health of American communities by providing highly trained canines to law enforcement, veterans and schools. Specifically, K9s 4 America will:
Enhance the safety of our communities by providing MWD K9s that are highly trained for protection and detection to law enforcement agencies and first responders.
Provide renewed independence and enhanced quality of life for American veterans through the donation of specially trained MWD K9 service dogs.
Secure the safety of our communities by introducing specifically trained MWD K9s for the protection of children, teachers and other employees in our schools.
K9s 4 America has a deep passion and strong commitment for fundraising to support the donation of specially trained dogs to help law enforcement agencies, American veterans and schools in our communities. We want to ensure the vitality of K9 programs in local law enforcement agencies to help reduce the use of illegal drugs and other crimes in our communities.
K9s 4 America is dedicated to improving the health of American veterans who have served our country. Our donation of trained companion dogs will provide renewed independence and enhanced quality of life for veterans who suffer from post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). By helping veterans heal, we can improve their mental health and reduce the rate of suicide among this honorable population.
As America experiences a drastic increase in gun violence in our schools, K9s 4 America is uniquely positioned to be a pioneer for the use of specially trained canines to help detect illegal drugs, weapons and explosives in our schools. Through our donations we hope to expand the use of canines to protect our children and enhance the overall safety of American schools.

The MWD method began with my journey to St. Petersburg Russia in 2012. There I began studying K9 training at the Royal Dog Academy under the direction of Maxim Basyro. Upon my return to the U.S. I spent the next 10 years developing dogs, studying dna, neuron activity, and connectivity of the central nervous system. MWD K9 was founded in 2012 in order to develop the best possible training methods for K9 and humans. Now based in Columbus, Ohio, this UA-cam Channel is our way of sharing what we've learned with you.
** ATTENTION** much of the training content is the wonderful and brilliant work of Mister Maxim Basyro. In 1996, from the youthful enthusiasm of dog training, followed by the practical experience of instructor-cynologist training of service dogs and the personnel learning of cynological units from the frontier troops, an impulse was created within Basyro to create the first cynological center - “Ronald” in St. Petersburg. It was within the Ronald Cynological Center that Basyro began working on creating programs and techniques that later became the theoretical framework for all the educational and training process within the larger organizational framework of the Federation of Military Canines. Now, 25 years after the first steps in the path of professional cynology - this framework has been expanded many times. In 2016, in St. Petersburg, the fifth center of the Federation was opened with a full range of specialized cynological services, and has already begun expanding significantly within the borders of the Leningrad region. The practical cynological services of the Ministry of Defense and the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Russian Federation is organically combined, as well as Maxim Basyro’s own methods for training both dogs and their handlers. With more than 25-years’ experience in the field of practical cynology, Basyro founded the Public Federation of Military Canines to best train dogs. www.masterdog-...

Awesome Video! I'm so glad you talk about how different dogs are trained differently. I have an Australian Shepherd, who is definitely choleric. He's just constant. I adopted an Alaskan Malamute. He was a senior dog when I adopted him. I wish I knew what he was like as a young dog because he's an amazing dog. I'm binge watching your videos now so I can hopefully learn to get a handle on the Australian Shepherd!

Youre the first trainer Ive come across who talks about the importance of dog personality. Other trainers act like if training is one size fits all. Of course this can't be the case. From what you said, it sounds like my dog is choleric. It's reassuring to have a word put to it and the traits and specific challenges described.

Erline, thank you for the fantastic comment. K9s 4 America strongly believes that every dog can learn and become great. The question is: How do we do that? We have worked hard at creating a system that you and the audience can follow at your own pace to achieve balance with your companion. Congratulations on having a choleric dog lol. The choleric the most misunderstood of all the temperaments and boy are they tons of work but rewarding to us humans. Please keep watching as K9s 4 America will be releasing the "Choleric 102" video in the next couple of weeks. If you ever have any questions going forward please do not hesitate to contact K9s 4 America as we are here to help assist you and your dog in becoming one. Thank you K9s 4 America.

@@K9s4AmericaMaybe it’s because I trained horses and parrots (plus other dogs) or maybe I “lucked out” but so far I don’t find my first mal as difficult as I thought it would be. He is definitely choleric. A SAR trainer said he is neither the highest prey drive or lowest - somewhere in the middle. The degree of “mouthiness” was surprising but he did not bite and with consistency it’s been redirected almost completely to toys and tug work at 8-9 months. Re: training parrots - if it goes wrong think of a mal with wings! About half of my parrots were parrots being rehomed because of aggression. Think of a mal with wings! I was able to regain their trust. 😅

Really enjoyed this video. Would love to see you go more in depth about temperament in general as this video seems to just discuss different drives.
My departed mutt seemed to be a Melancholic dog, loved to train for the sole purpose of interaction with me. Loved to work just to please me. But the second its over, he's ready to relax & sit on the couch. Never had much toy drive.
My GSD on the other hand, sanguine. He's a very anxious-avoidant dog towards people, would rather stay with his family (me/my fiance) & the only things he ever wants to work for is toys. He has low to zero food drive on any given day. He can play and play and play, then relax after decompressing himself over a course of time.
Two very different personalities between the two...

Great video! I would really like to know:
    1) which handler fits with which dog - if both are analysed with this system.
    2) how environment and lifestyle (daily routine, food, exercise, rest/sleep, connection to nature/lack thereof, trauma, thoughts/emotions, confidence/lack of confidence and STRESS) affect the different categories.
    Thank you

Thanks for these great questions @Naturhundarna! We actually filmed a video to address them as this is such a great topic to dive into. Hope you enjoy!
