Developing excitable - choleric type dogs. The excitation process in this type of dog dominates over the inhibition process. Therefore, positive conditioned reflexes develop quickly and easily, but inhibitory reflexes are slow and difficult to form and are impeded by external positive stimuli. Sometimes this causes a trainer to become nervous, and he/she prefers not to work with kind of dog. The supervisor and Coach need to remember that this type K9 is very energetic and tires less during work than other dogs. They almost never have breakdowns or neuroses in response to strong stimuli. By the age of 3-4 years, this type animal can be capable of excellent work. This type of dog needs a calm, diligent owner/trainer with a great deal of self-control. Initially in training a dog like this, one needs to work with a minimum number of distracting stimuli. After establishing contact, work begins on developing inhibitory conditioned reflexes. At first, inhibitory skills in response to strong stimuli are developed, and then restraint is reinforced while working on general obedience and specialized techniques. The development of restraint begins with 2-3 seconds and is gradually increased to satisfy program requirements. The main training method is mechanical. Work on developing aggression and detaining a person takes place once a week. Work on following a scent train is performed without agitating the dog beforehand. The trail is initially laid down without angles and without intersections of other scent trails. Lengthy trails can be created. A strict order in training to select items should be strictly and carefully followed. Work on selecting people should begin only after the selection of objects has been mastered. This type is not used in sniffer work since it is not able to accurately differentiate among odors while working. There are no limitations in the exercise regime. This type dog needs to be exercised before working on complex skills with inhibitory reflexes. Excessively excitable and vicious are more suited for guard duty.

I have my first mal (not first dog). He’s only 8 months & he’s the first I am training more than “pet” obedience. Regarding the speed & accuracy- am I correct that it comes with training? He has learned more commands than my previous dogs, but he does not have nearly the speed & precision of the dogs in your video. I have assumed it’s because I am still learning these techniques myself. Ie) these dogs are capable of precision & speed but we need to teach them how to direct it. Hope that makes sense. Thanks in advance. Really enjoying what I am watching. Thank-you!

Great video, thanks! I get the four classifications but do you think some dogs fall in between the main four?

Hey Jon- Fantastic question and the answer is yes. Mix temperaments do exist. K9s 4 America will be doing a "Mix Temperament" video. The thought was to get out to the audience the basic 4 tempers first and let everyone get a simple taste of what we are talking about. The videos will increase in difficulty as this first season continues. Lots of information to come. The biggest challenge is how to bring the audience this information. The more guidance from you the better. K9s 4 America is here to serve you people and your furry friends. We very much appreciate your interaction and the great comments. Looking forward to hearing from you soon.

I think my dog - who's approaching 2 years old - is chloric. I was hoping she'd calm down as she gets older. Now I see that I'm wrong.

Congratulations on having a choleric puppy (wink). Does your baby girl like to use her nose? The challenge with the choleric is keeping them from becoming bored. Keep watching as K9s 4 America will post future episodes on games that you can play to make your life and hers more balanced. A balanced life is a happy life. Hope to hear from you soon.

What does MWD stand for please?

Mindset, Willingness, Determination. The MWD method began with my journey to St. Petersburg Russia in 2012. There I began studying K9 training at the Royal Dog Academy under the direction of Maxim Basyro. Upon my return to the U.S. I spent the next 10 years developing dogs, studying DNA, neuron activity, and connectivity of the central nervous system. MWD K9 was founded in 2012 in order to develop the best possible training methods for K9 and humans. Now based in Columbus, Ohio, this UA-cam Channel is our way of sharing what we've learned with you.
