I like it. The gap wouldn’t bother me and in fact, I made a gate this year and my client actually Asked for gaps to allow her to see if anyone was there. There’s also an argument that it allows for high winds to blow through. Great job 👏🏾👏🏾
Hi there🖐Appreciate your comnent, and interestingly, I have noticed how much the wind whistles through the gaps which obviously puts a bit less wind load on the gates💨😎Cheers Del
Only a sujestion to black out the gaps without impeding the expansion and contraction of the composite boards what about just slipping in lengths of thin black Pallet Strapping Banding. It will slip in without undoing the fixtures and can be bonded at the top with a dab of silicone, although gravity's going to keep it in place anyway. Love watching your roofing videos, just building up the courage to do s lean-to roof with hips this summer. Happy New Year Del
Hi Bernie🖐I'm a proud Englishman but also love being British along side my Welsh, Scottish and Northern Irish brothers and sisters🇬🇧 (I also adore the Irish who gave me my wife 🇮🇪) Appreciate your comment and thanks for watching 😎 Cheers Del
Wouldn't last a summer storm in the west of Ireland , I've made a few set's but always use stainless steal 8 mm bolts & washers Galvanised after drilling is done for bolts , great job and love watching your videos 'I use to live and work in the uk
Del, getting older is no fun for active people but you did well. I think I would have added a box section at the bottom to add to the symmetry of the gate from the 'good' side but it would certainly have added to both cost and weight; perhaps a second daughter? Keep safe and have a great Christmas & New Year.
Hi Michael🖐I did consider putting a bottom section on for symmetry🤔but decided to leave it out in the end👍Thanks for your comment and for watching 😎 Cheers Del
you're a brave man del haha. a mate of mine calls his van the owld war horse.... i thought he meant his mrs when i first heard him use the term... as others said id leave the gaps to allow wind to pass through.
Cracking neat tidy job lad, I always get wife help me to lift fence panels n anything I can't lift on my jacks, but now at 64 she's told me to bog off in future,
@thetallcarpenter thank you very much Del, even though the current year has been problematic and the health conditions mean I have to adapt to life, have had a good Christmas spending it with friends and hoping for a better new year for 2025. Happy new year to you too!! I was chuckling when you said at the start about the gates being manufactured and a swap for your daughter, think you should have held out for a few grand's worth of festool tools. Take care of yourself
Looking good Del , heavy gates, back wreckers , the plastic timber is becoming more popular over here for cladding gates , I've noticed some on large gates are inclined to warp if not enough fixes are used , Anyway Del great to see you again Happy Christmas and have a great new year 👋🧑🎄☘️🇮🇪🤓👏
Nice looking gates. I like to be neat Del, but that was a lot of effort doing it that way. Boarded hanging for me. Leave the truss in the box. If that was me a small c section channel over those through screws, painted same black. Screws go away. Hope you have a great Christmas and New year. Christmas has gone here. Nearly Boxing day. It was a beautiful day and not so hot, perfect for the holidays.
None of this changes the fact that in 1972, a crack commando unit was sent to prison by a military court for a crime he didn't commit. This man promptly escaped from a maximum security stockade to the Los Angeles underground. Today, still wanted by the government Del survive as soldier of fortune. If you have a problem, if no one else can help, and if you can find him...maybe you can hire The Tall Carpenter. 👊🏻 Great work Del.
Great video again pal, taking a chance talking about the wife😂😂😂 maybe an option to rip a strip of decking and cover the back where the screws are, keep the videos coming as really enjoy your humour and patter😂😂😂
Hi Del, nice looking solid pair of gates there and intesting to no you do some welding to. Enjoy your Xmas and New year and I hope we'll be seeing in 2025. 👍👍👍
Hi Kevin🖐When I say I do welding, what I actually mean is I have a welder, and occasionally successfully stuck bits of metal together😂Thanks for watching bud 😎 Cheers
Great stuff thank del Love watchin your videos mate you are a perfectionist like me Nothing but the best pal 👍 merry Christmas to you & your family Ps funny your comments about the Mrs 😂
Really appreciate this video as I've designed some gates for my self build to do in a years time the same construction, but theres a few things im unsure about. 1. Do the fixings have to be visible from the front side to get a better hold and if the screw head was on the back metal side it would be a poor fixing? 2. Wheres the little shoe bought from, i considered adding a wheel to each gate because i wasnt sure how much weight can hang on the posts. Ill have two gates 1.7m tall and 2.1m wide. 3. Is 4" post just set into the ground in a hole with concrete surrounding it or was there more on the bottom like a tapered or flanged end? Trying to decide hole diameter to dig.
Hi there🖐I think fixing this hollow board from the back won't be as secure as fixing from the front. Search 'gate center stop' to find the floor stop on Ebay. And for big gates like yours I would probably use 150x150 posts set in 1 cubic meter of concrete each💪Cheers Del
Nice job that, low maintenance is the key as you get older. What could you get for the wife. I got a bottle of wine for mine, which I thought was a fair swap 😂. Merry Christmas Del and family.
Adapt and overcome. Amazing. 👏👏 My whole vocabulary consists of " I'm too old for this shit" 😂 Love working on my todd but sometimes, just sometimes.... Great content again fella. 👌👍👍
Sounds like we are the same bud🤔Most of the time working on your own is fine, but at times of heavy lifting, not so much😝Thanks for your comment 🤩 Cheers Del
@stuartandrews4344 Ah, I see. The 'eyes' that were welded onto the gate were fabricated by the guys that made them, specifically to give added strength👍
Coach bolts might look neater? With domed nuts on the ugly side. Did you use a self etching primer on the galvanised metal? Thanks for showing this, I am designing a set of side gates for my own home and this has helped me visualise a lot of the things that have been bothering me.
Hi there🖐I'm not going to disagree with you about coach bolts and domed nuts, as I NEARLY went down that route🤔and yes, I T washed the galved finish before painting👊Thanks for watching and your comment 😎 Cheers Del
Had similar gates made about 5 years ago cost approx. £1700 Set of 2 gates total 10 foot across 6 foot height with posts in Stoke so poss slightly cheaper than some areas
Hi Del merry Christmas did you use any special paint? I think it has trouble lasting over time and adhering to the galvanised coating? Unless it's powder coated .... all the best for 2025 🎉 Derek
Hi Derek🖐After a LOT of research, I went for an acrylic paint, so I'm hoping it lasts well🤞And I had to T wash the galved finish first so the paint would stick👍Thanks for watching 😎 Cheers Del
Hi Arthur🖐Yes, swearing whilst lifting heavy objects seems to come very naturally these days😝Have a nice break bud, and thanks for all your support in 2024😎
I built some for myself quite similar but with fence pale, 12ft wide, I welded on a top slide bar, its like a wind tunnel down the side of my house, silly question but did you T wash before painting?
Hi Lester🖐I hear you about it being like a wind tunnel down the side of your house😬The wind REALLY whistles through this gap aswell💨Yes, I T washed the galved finish first👍Thanks for watching 😎 Cheers Del
BTW pricing is as follows. Gates and posts with composite tongue and groove boards fitted £1600 plus Locnox lock fitted £150 and galvanising £350 so total price is £2100 minimum. Hope that helps as that's my pricing structure
I used to make stables with these boards. You should of had U channels on the inside of the gate and slot the boards in, no screwing and it would of taken you 5 minutes if that
Hi there🖐I did consider using the proper deck fixing clips that come with the gates so there was no face fixings🤔but went with the screws in the end👊Thanks for watching 😎 Cheers Del
There was no need to take gates off, cut your boards all the same length obviously, fit the first one on the left, use a 6 mm packer top and bottom, pre drill with a 3mm hss bit and use the right length tek screw, fairly straigth forward stuff, no wrestlin with heavy gates needed .
Hi there🖐I think I would have found it a lot trickier to hold the 9 boards upright before spacing them equally, plus each board would have needed a different packers under them to keep them the right distance off the ground😬and I find it less effort to drill through 4/5mm steel with my body weight pusing downwards rather that horizontally, especially at close to ground level👍As with most jobs though, there always more than one way to do them😎Cheers Del
best youtuber carpenter there is! absolutely love watching your videos, picking up things and implementing them into my own work!
That's a really generous comment bud🤗Glad you find my videos interesting👊and thanks for watching 😎 Cheers Del
I love the mutterings of a carpenter.....'I'm getting too old for this'...................I do it all the time. 😂
