Lao Zhong Zhong: Master of Handcrafted Ngoh Hiang Fritters since 1950s | SINGAPORE HAWKER FOOD

Since the tender age of 11, Mr Tan Kee Kwang has been helping his father at their roadside Ngoh Hiang stall outside the old Thong Chai Medical Hall, established in the 1950s. Now in his 70s, Mr Tan still handmakes the all-time favourite fritters, offering a whopping 14 varieties to choose from, such as water chestnut egg, Ngoh Hiang, pork sausage, prawn roll, prawn cracker, prawn fritter with egg, and spring roll - all paired with crushed peanuts chilli sauce. It is truly an intriguing joy tasting these fritters.
The name of the stall, '中中' meaning mediocre, was chosen to be easy to remember and to reflect the founder's humble aim for the stall to be neither the best, nor not good enough. However, the turn out of regulars and the more than 70 years of history speak for themselves, as the food is among the very best locally.

Thee BEST. The original stall used to be in the old open space ellenborough food market back in the 60s. I remember uncle was a young man when he helped his father’s stall back then 😊 very very happy he’s still selling. Seriously he deserved Michelin star.
