    An alternative way... drain fluid, refill with 5L through oil filter housing. Takes bloody ages but doesn't need any special tools. Warming DSG oil in hot water helps the time it takes.

      5 Litres or just the amount of fluid that came out of the car? Also why does it take so long through the filter? Does it just go down into the transmission slow through that?

    Great video and a very nice step-by-step explanation. I'm getting ready to do the DSG service on my 2014 Jetta TDI. But at 12:45: there is a rusty looking air hose leaning against the battery. Should it be hooked up someplace?

    My wife's 2012 Jetta Sportwagen TDI, and my step-daughter's 2012 Jetta TDI Sedan are both *exactly* the same as this. (Well -- almost exactly the same. Their cars have the Torx T-25 screws holding the air box together. 8 of them. Because apparently VW *really* wanted that air-box to be held together well. LOL)
    But you've gotta love the fact that VW kept this exact same setup in production for multiple years and models. Makes servicing *so* much easier!

    Hey Charles! Thanks for all the vids. You're a great resource for just about everything I've had questions on regarding my Passat B6. I heard you state that you always remove the negative battery terminal first and reinstall it last (which is the correct practice) but then in the video you bounce back and forth between the 2 terminals with your wrench. Just as troubling is that your wrench was long enough to connect between the terminals. Clearly you're and experienced mechanic who is well aware of the risks of inadvertently connecting the 2 terminals and you took the requisite care not to.For the rest of your viewers though, the practice of removing the negative cable first is to eliminate the risk of contact by the wrench with surrounding metal parts. Once the negative cable is REMOVED (not just loose), then the positive cable can be worked safely with no risk in case of inadvertent contact by the wrench with adjacent metal parts. Additional safety can be achieved by ONLY using tools shorter than the distance between the battery terminals.

    I'm watching this video as I'm about to attempt a DSG service, it looks very useful so far. One thing that made me cringe though, undoing the allen bolt next to the battery with a metal ratchet. I've always worked on the assumption that the battery gets removed first regardless of the job. It would only need a small slip to connect ground with live. (A bit later on you're tightening the ground connection and the ratchet actually touches the positive, it's only because you used a rubber covered ratchet that stopped it from making quite a mess)

      Yeah, I thought the same thing, myself... Let the dealer do it -- too much of a pain in the ass to do it myself. Then my local dealer raised their price to $499 for a damn DSG service, and I decided I could do it myself. And it really wasn't anywhere near as bad as I'd thought it would be. And when the timing belt needed doing at 120K miles, I went ahead and did that, too -- that was a *much* bigger pain, but still doable with the right tools. Even with the special tools, I still saved like $500 off what the dealer wanted for the timing belt.
      TL;DR -- all modern cars are complicated, but you *can* work on them if you're determined enough.

    Question. I've seen other transmission fluid changes where by the oil drain plug is removed first along with the measuring nosel thingy if your car has it. Then, loosening the DSG filter and letting the oil just drain out. Then grab your self a sandwich, watch some UA-cam clips of bad drivers and come back to the rest of the service. Can this be done this way? I just think it's my preference since it removes the need for clean up of any oil spilling out when removing the filter. Almost creates a vacuum in the trans to let all the oil out. Just wonderin'. Thanks anyway for the great vid.

Also, do you really need to check the temperature level if so what kind of vagcom, obd2 device do I buy? Hey Charles. I had my 2012 2.0T ccta Jetta repair an oil leak causing a cracked water pump. Mechanic that performed job asked if I had the transmission fluid changed yet (then had 83k miles). He said not to change it if it hadn't been done already, that it can cause issues. Do you agree with that statement?

    • @MattyT_86
      @MattyT_86 4 роки тому +1

      Always service your transmission fluid. These dual-clutch transmissions need regular fluid and filter changes. In any case, if changing your transmission fluid then causes issues, you had a transmission that was going bad anyway.

    are there any other places to get the filler unit? I see one but it's for BMW but I assume it would work with VW as well as long as the fill adaptor mates with the filling unit, but i find it odd that the filling unit costs around $140 USD, this gets me to thinking a bit outside the box or asking if there are any other methods for pumping the fluid back in the transmission. this is the only thing stopping me from starting this

    Is this a 6-speed or 7-speed DSG?
    I have been looking for a How-to guide to do the 7-speed DSG in my 2010 S4 with the 3.0 TFSI (supercharged).
    The part about changing the filter does not apply to my engine bay. The battery is in the trunk, and the filter in the filter/seal kit I purchased looks completely different.
    If the process for my 7-speed DSG is different, can you point me in the right direction for a DIY?

    • @dopiaza2006

      This is for 6 speed. 7 speed doesn't have an oil change specified as far as I am aware. It uses dry clutch and way less oil.

    I just did the 80k transmission fluid changed 2012 vw passat tdi.I did it myself watching this video but i have a question the fluid i drained was red and the 40k service was done by a vw dealer, none of the videos i have watched had red fluid is there a changed that the dealer put the wrong fluid and it managed to run for 40k miles? Should i do one more drain and refill? the car did have a delay when switching from R to D and P to R or D now that I put new dsg fluid (amber color)the delay when away. And one more question when i took the plug out (cold fluid) almost a quart came out. Isn't suppost to be a little or almost nothing if the transmission was filled properly assuming that the dealer warmed up the transmission and drained the excess fluid. Also to check the transmission fluid temperature i used the torque app it works. So i ended up putting 4.7 quarts and I took off 5.5 plus a little i spilled on the ground of red fluid. was this transmission overfilled?

    • @HumbleMechanic
      @HumbleMechanic  4 роки тому

      Tough to say with out fully checking it. SUPER odd that it was red. I have not seen any DSG that was red. The odds of them putting the wrong stuff in, and not having issues is low.
      Ive seen people do that and the trans is toast in 200 miles.

    On the 6 speeds, i just use a manual pump to pump it in. Warm the car up, then undue the level plug and let it drain off. Takes around 7L with a new wet clutch.
