Just a tip for those that don't know, in DSG dry-clutch models built before 2015 their is a design issue where the pressure accumulator can crack at the base. This results in a pressure loss that prevents gear changes happening. There is a recall in some countries and VW/Skoda/SEAT are replacing the mechatronics units as a warranty issue.

Dan, there is a simpler way to test for short circuits. Instead of installing a new fuse, connect a 12 V tester to both fuse terminals. Leave it and it might resort to normal (1, 2, 3, 4, etc) but then fail again. It's the DSG 0B5 gearbox, which I understand is a wet clutch system (Great explanation of twin clutches, pre-select next gear). All I need to do is get it fixed .................... at great expense here in the UK !!! Getting the right diagnosis may be the first problem. Thank you.

Thank you Dan for as always interesting and excellent content! Just like to add, if you like to use an oscilloscope to measure three phases, that you can, if there is no neutral point like the three phase motor in your video, add three equal resistors from each of the three phases into a star point. Well, now you have a neutral point and can connect three channels to each of the phases and ground to the star point made up of the three resistors. First Class video, the VW DSG is poorly engineered, a class action in the USA courts judged against VW, the unacceptable failure rate of the expensive part ..." USA Lemon Laws"
Other manufacturers have the same problem, it was a mistake from the inventor and was fixed in man other cars too. I know of Kia and Mercedes that has changed the control unit because boards fried like that.
My personal preference is manual transmission. There are less things to go wrong and by my understanding, it usually has potential for a tad better fuel economy. About DSG. You know it is not good if you get one to act up twice during test drive of a dealer demo car (Skoda Superb). That one had noticeable delay between applying throttle and taking off, also did not like uphill maneuvering (dropping out of gear and down the hill you go).
Interestingly the original wet clutch DSG was supplied by BorgWarner - a US based company - to VW. But I guess since VW put them in their cars they are responsible for the failures.
I know nothing about modern cars but am impressed with your detailed knowledge and explanation though, I have to say, I'm less impressed with your choice of music. Great video, well done.

Thanx Dan, ur explanation makes work look simple, awesome video♥️
great video dan, at the dealership level we would just replace the mechtronic unit. No time for tear down. 👍🏽👍🏽
Amazing how many points of failure this transmission has. It's almost like there was a competition on who could make it fail the most ways.
Excellent video as always!! One of the best channels to learn from.
Who won?😛
@@Diagnosedan Well, designing a transmission that totally fails because it's own gear oil leaked into itself makes you a good contender for first place! Absolutely ludicrous design in this day and age. There's no need for this. None.
@@Diagnosedan
Hai.

Cleared the error code but came back again and not moving
I live in Los Angeles with a 2014 VW GLI with 200K miles. I'm starting to have some drivetrain issues so I appreciate your video. Not that it solved my particular problem. But it was very interesting to watch and very informative. Thank you.
Dan, as always enjoyed your content. Love your analytical and problem solving approach. 10/10 also for your video editing skills.
Thanks alot Dave!
This is one of the best auto channels I've ever seen.
I've had two cars with DSG gearboxes, and never had any issues with them, but they do give me the fear. I'm not sure how many people are out there who'll do diagnosis at this level. I now have a car with three pedals and a lever that you wobble around. ;-)
😂😂👍
I must admit its one of those reason I avoid these new fangled Automatics like the Covid. Old fashioned Slush boxes were slow and burned more fuel, but jesus they were simple. Manual for me too.
@@DasArab whaaa?? since when are torque-converter autos "simple"??
have you ever taken one apart and tried to put it back together, or seen those valve bodies?
@@raoulrr its simple, everything is on 1 shaft.... and valves follow oil pressure.

When I was an apprentice my boss told me “check the basics first! 90% of most problems are something basic eg. Faulty battery). Thanks for the great video. Very helpful.
Excellent tutorial, beautiful lighting and camera angles! I would love to see you do a DSG fluid change on a VW GTI.
Truly excelent, when i count possibility about this Yetti coming from factory with manual gearbox, then we ended without this video, and milions of peoples worldwide can spare on repairs, when something like DSG doesnt exist. Servis intervals are too short... 🤣
Hello,
Great idea , The GTI has just entered the family and need some care.
Thanks for this great channel

40+ years of experience as a professional mechanic, and I can say without reservation: YOU are the man. You did not say it, but you should have mentioned to put the multimeter on AC when testing the motor. I would recommend a milliohm meter and megger as additional tools for the modern technician. Thank you for your work.
Hello,
Could you please tell e what is a Megger and it's purpose .
Thanks

Looking forward to 'diagnosing this together'! Or maybe I'll just sit and watch you do it. 😉
Keep them coming Dan. 👍🏻
Abbott Automotive 🤣🤣☺️ look at that, fixed it without even getting my hands dirty. 💪🏽👌
@@HandyC haha! yes, it wasn't a bad one was it. 😉 😂
Why did you let me do all the dirty work😉
@@Diagnosedan we all know you love getting dirty
@@Diagnosedan you were doing such a good job so I thought I'd leave it to you. Plus I was just supervising. 😋
Am always impressed Dan the way you keep the workshop clean and tidy and everything that you might need is right there at hand, I wish a lot of workshops would do the same!
i love how you always find the root cause of a failure.
Thank you 👍
Excellent explanation and autopsy of a dead DSG. They also had a known fault in the early days that caused the DSG to have a incorrect gear selection at high speeds that would cause fatal crashes.
If I have to rate 10/10 I’ll even give 20/10.
U explain and show everything very well.
Very helpful !
My god what a clear explanation and video , it is the best tutorial I have seen on you tube .It was so good although I came onto it in error and have niether the same car or fault I sat and watched in amazment well done your the man .
Hey Dan you did a great job with this video, your a born natural. Very interesting well done.
mate, you're the epitomy of a legend, i watched every second of that video and it felt like a 2 minute video. love your work mate!
Love watching a master of his craft well done Dan greetings from Australia cheers mate 👍
Thanks Damien😁
Thanks, I really learned alot about DSG’s from your video. A woman died in Australia when her Volkswagon’s DSG failed on a highway and her car stopped suddenly. Common fault in DSG’s.
Can’t believe it was all due to an oil additive.
That was awesome, Dan! Very cool to see a DSG gearbox teardown and explanation! I'll stick to my regular old-school foot clutch for now...seems to be more reliable...until my left leg blows a fuse haha :D
Ha ha manuals must be rare in the States.
Yes, they are almost becoming exotic. Most people don't know how to operate a manual, and think of their car as an appliance :(
What an excellent video! Dan you are exceptionally gifted. I hadn't got a clue about DSGs, mechatronics or any of that but needed to know as my 2014 Audi Q5 has just started playing up with only one side of the gear train driving (1, 3, 5, 7), warning message says Gearbox Fail No Reverse Gear. Thank you.
Nice work Dan, I love your thoroughness.
Thank you very much 😀
this video was excellent . clearly showing Dan,s high class skill level.. Interestingly the original fully synthetic oil was corrosive .. I hope the expensive Motul 100% synthetic oil I lovingly use on my engine doesn,t contain any corrosive additives . Just for your interest radio control model electric brushless motors are also three phase .. so any R/C electric motor controller would drive the three phase oil pump motor in that Skoda DSG transmission . mr . average mechanic is not going to go to the lengths you go to. even at 76 years young I followed your thinking all through . a double excellent score for you .
More people like you Dan !!! Amazing enthusiasm and patience. Thank you
Wow I knew the DSG box was a great feat of engineering but never realised it was so complicated. Dan you are a magician sir,,,,truly knowledgeable. Great video. Thanks for posting.
An excellent talk, concise and precise, very informative. Thank you!
Dan , after watching this you were indeed correct! MODERN CARS HAVE GOT STOP STOP TECHNOLOGY! Great diag Take care
Keep those great videos coming... my wife is driving me up the walls!!!
Ha ha ha 😂😂
Well-diagnosed! It's always a good feeling finding the problem. Many workshops would simply replace the unit, or worse, the entire gearbox.
Great dissection of the inner guts of DSG.
Dear Dan, do you also get an extra bolt or screw leftover after reassembling things ?
This is one of the best transmission videos I have ever seen...your step by step explaianation is another level. Have to subscribe and want to learn more.
Well done.. Great content.
Can't wait, hope business is still ok, stay safe Dan!!!!
Work is very slow but we are all Safe.
Superb video, s3 came in today and the accumulator housing cracked pushing the accumulator forward bending the front cover,A right royal mess it’s made, new subscribers here very educational video , I applaud you dan 👍
Thank you for sharing. I’ve wanted to know more about DSG since I started driving my a few years back. 👍🏻
Thanks for watching 👍
Thank you Dan for taking us through this i have always stayed clear of these l now have some confidence to take it on next time one comes to me. Subscribed. Respect from London UK.
It could be done just for fun! ;-) Keep up the good work Dan, love your videos!
Thanks for the comment
@@Diagnosedan Hi, how do you depressurize the accumulator before opening? can it shoot out and injure someone?
Thank you, my friend, for the information. I have a problem with my car, it is byd, the bst transmission system, and I want to test the clutch lever No. 2, please. If I have any other program to communicate, it is preferred.@@Diagnosedan

I have heard that VW transmissions are not designed or built to last, and now I have seen proof. That repair must have cost some serious money in the Netherlands. Thanks for a very interesting video, Dan. And your English is phenomenal.:)
Thanks for watching Paul
Brilliant mate that’s a great video, learnt a lot as usual!
That's great Michael
Brilliant very informative video on the horrendous, typically German, over complexity of a VAG DSG gearbox.
Definitely saved me a lot of money, because "An important lesson we can learn from this video" is never ever buy a VAG DSG equipped vehicle!
Unless you're disabled I think 1 clutch & 1 gearbox might be a safer option.
Thanks again for a truly excellent video.👍
Thank Q Dan the man done it again.... very informative Webinar.....
Thanks for attending

This is a great channel, I wish you done videos more often!
My head is imploding! Wonderful video and for sure I would avoid, at all costs, a car with DSG gearbox! The sooner I get my Mk2 Cortina back on the road the better!
Maybe you can do a dq250 or any of the wet clutches.Cheers 🍻

5:55 Too many useless devices making our lives more expensive!!!
You just helped me understand my Passat TDI with a DSG, this is the first DSG I have ever owned and before I bought my Passat I'd never heard of a DSG transmission. Tusen takk!
Always mechatronic failure, although I've seen clutch failure, flywheel failure, slipper bearing failure, solenoid and actuator failure.... the best is hydraulic pump failure! What a mess!
You forget the broken Acumulator 😉
@@Diagnosedan Totally, that looks awesome when they fail.
For the accumulator failure you have to be careful with disassemble. Last time we had a lot of problems with customers who putted the wrong oil in the mechatronic 😁
I know that everyone has an opinion, but really i don't know why someone will put a thumb down. I really want to know what wrong is in this perfect video material. Thanks, DiagnoseDan keep going
Unfortunately people almost never motivate why they give a thumbs down.
@@Diagnosedansadly, but true :)
50% of all roadside break down are related to battery or charging? Sound like someone is trying to sell something I don’t need.
That is actually true especially in winter or during a cold snap.
I have a 2007 Skoda Octavia with the 6 speed DSG. I've heard some horror stories re. these transmissions but I have to say I've had 240,000 trouble free kilometres out of mine to date. My transmission oil was changed a few years ago.
Very informative video thanks.
That's great!
First Class video, the VW DSG is poorly engineered, a class action in the USA courts judged against VW, the unacceptable failure rate of the expensive part ..." USA Lemon Laws"
Thanks for watching 👍
USA is not EU...
