You're such a wonderful mother! Being able to introduce your daughter to one of your passions and being willing to let her express herself even if it doesn't completely match up with your tastes. The tank looks great!
We need more content like this. Basic aquarium setups using the artificial decor. I can't tell u how many times people have told me they decided against an aquarium because of how complicated the plants are. Also I am a sponge filter fan fir the exact same reason
Glad to see somebody who doesn’t hate on artificial decor. I get that everyone loves a heavily planted tank but not everyone’s really cut out for that kind of setup, myself included, and there’s nothing wrong with artificial decorations as long as they’re fish safe and the tank is well maintained And if people don’t like the look of rainbow colored plants then there’s plenty of natural-looking options out there
@@BigShrimpin416 The decorations in this tank are all fish-safe They may not look natural but fish don't really care about aesthetics, just having places to hide and feel secure Even in nature they'll readily take shelter in manmade objects if nothing else is available
I actually love that you ended the episode with “don’t add your fish now.” So many newbies buy the aquarium stuff and the fish at the same time for instant gratification. I love that you left your daughter choose what she wants in the tank.
My first tank looked similar to this years ago, fake plants, colorful rocks, etc. It was a good experience for me and once I got older I was able to set it up with real plants and more "special" substrate, this is a great starting point for kids! Great job and good luck to the little ones with this new hobby!
I love you saying 'yes it's my daughter's tank but as the adult I'm responsible' I hate so many parents get a dog and then complain the 7yo doesn't do everything, like yeah it's a 7yo they're going to forget things
Place a neoprene mat under your tank to prevent it from cracking due to vibrations when people walk by or are actively doing stuff near the tank. As Irene showed at 4:31
I'm happy you're showing some love for us who are new to the hobby and starting with artificial decor. People rail on me too often for this choice, but I'm struggling with keeping fish alive as it is, how do you expect me to add live plants to the mix?? 😭😭 Thank fully this new group I have haven't had any casualties or signs of sickness, though me and my niece have found an estimate of 8-13 baby platys!🥰
Haha, I probably chose the worst possible place for my first fish tank. The stand was right above a heating/AC vent with another vent a few feet away from it and a sliding door leading outside also a few feet away. It was also behind a north facing window, so hello, algae-ville! Plus, it was in the living room which is the place with the second most traffic xD And my piano was very close by, so that didn't do any good for my piano. *cough cough* moisture. The two sinks that I could use for water changes were both on other floors, so every time I changed the water, I'd have to lug a gallon of water up and down stairs. The tank was still amazing and I loved the heck out of it, despite choosing such an unfortunate place lol
Just wanted to say that this is a very helpful and informative video, and I love that in addition to covering the basics it also has pro-tips that I don’t hear about as often, such as using a black background and substrate to help the colors of the fish stand out more, and using pothos and anubias to purify the water without needing any special care My stepmom is actually looking to get into fishkeeping and we’ll be setting up one of my old tanks when my little brother is old enough, and I’ll definitely be showing this video to them!
Great video as always! It’s the initial cost part I wish I’d have known going into the hobby. My first 2 tanks were free, but all the other stuff I had to purchase.
So the bathroom location choice makes much more sense when you explain your reasoning for it, but quick question: what about showers or baths? Would the fluctuations in temperatures and humidity caused by basic stuff like that have an adverse effect on the tank? Just curious.
Our fish aren't that fragile. Remember in the wild there are temperature fluctuations. It's pretty artificial to keep temperature at a constant 80 degrees.
Re dirty landscape gravel, ohko stone has entered the chat. 😄 (I tripped over a pile I was hosing out yesterday, fishkeeper injuries, ouch! It was fresh in my mind. All that mud!)
This fish tank looks so great! great job!! Now my kids need a fish tank in their bathroom too!!... and now I see ALL SURFACES AS ABLE TO HOLD TANKS WOOOOO!!!!!! ;)
That is an awesome tank 10 out of 10 I have a small 10 gallon with some small Oh yeah sorry auto correct or did that I actually have two African cichlids in 10 gallon tank I am deciding to rehome them however
And also getting kids in the hobby is great i’m 11 years old and I have five fish tanks and when I was five years old my parents taught me everything about fish keeping and now I have five fish tanks a 37 gallon fish tank from 5 gallons basically I do all my water changes by myself and I learn how to keep fish I am currently breeding black skirt tetras this morning I woke up and there was eggs on one of the plants so they Spond and they’re fertilized
However though I’m worried that when the eggs to hatch and that the fry will rather get stuck I have a mesh breeder so I’m wondering if they will be OK
And I guess they were not eggs it was just random stuff however though I do have a male and a female so after I get back from my trip from Arizona I’m going to start breeding my tetras so those weren’t eggs but I wish you success and I hope your daughter can keep lots of fish and learn from this experience
Fyi, Petco doesn't do the $1 a gallon sales anymore. What they do now is sometimes as cheap, but for smaller tanks it's more expensive. It's 50%off Aqueon ONLY tanks. And they're doing one now!!
Hi, i got 2 new honey gourami for my 29g tank that currently has guppies. It's been about 36 hours, and they are always hiding under the driftwood i have, especially when i try to feed them. Will they eventually stop hiding? Thank you!
hello, I just bought my betta a new tank and before I even put him in it it was cloudy then it went away so I put him in it then it came back about 1 week later idk what do to please help
@@GirlTalksFish It's not the tape, I found using a solution or something makes it like HD. If you haven't tried it, give it a shot on your next tank. Petco has rimless cubes on sale right now. The 14g are a great size.
U said fish are expensive but how cause my tank has 13 fish and five types but it only cost 3 dollars every 6 or 3 months and when i first got it the supply cost was that includes the tank $72 and my fishes were $18 so $90 others are like over $100.
I've been using pool sand mixed with black gravel to get the black substrate look too for my grankids first tank,it very nice to get them to love aquarium fish keeping, nowadays as adults b oth have multiple tank syndrome lol
Your tank is just a few steps away from a glofish tank Irene! My kids wanted a glofish tank. And after 1 year of regular fish keeping, I was experienced enough to handle a glofish tank. And I'm glad I didn't start with a glofish tank. Because the glofish company heavily markets tanks that are way too small.
Hello, I personally would not have chosen the unnatural decor, but as long as your daughter does know that live plants make things better, I think it’s good for a first thank. Maybe at a later date you could go and have her pick out her fav driftwood, rock, and live plants! Just my opinion tho. Little too neon for my taste, but in the end what matters is that your daughter gets some good experience 👍
I have not used a filter for over 20 years and I don't do water changers and my water is clear. I use only live plants I use the same water for my fish and hydroponics, I'm able to grow strawberries all year. I have my hydroponics table above the fish tank, using a low volume pump, I pump the water from the tank to the table and let the over flow fall back into the tank at the other end. pending on the size of the tank, I have a air stone every 2 feet Ii never use any pleco's the things are just to dirty, other fish can do the same job.
I just cant believe what i became. From plastic decoration tank to ecosystem tank with hard plants at just 13 years old. I dont wanna flex but i literally just cant believe this.
Some rare ludwigias (not commonly found) and some carpeting plants without co2. Thats The thing, i dont have co2 even if half of the plants need high co2 level. Maybe im just lucky with my water.

Youre a mom?! Great fish mom and great human parent :p
I really like how your daughter decorated her tank!
It is such a nice tank. Your daughter is an amazing designer.
Really cool aquarium.🤩👍
It would look a lot better if it was decorated with live plants and non-painted substrate but it looks good for a tank designed by a child

That person who commented clearly throw a 2 goldfish in a 0.5 gal bowl with rainbow gravel and no filtration 💀

I don’t think the humidity will bother them ;). I don’t think the room temp changes from a shower are enough to do much to a tank’s temp
