GK.
This is the best most clearly articulated solution for the issue of pulsating Dyson. I discarding a Dyson cordless believing it was the battery which is costly to replace and bought a new one. After a short time it began to do the same thing. Used this video and the original is now working. Now will try to be successful to unclog the newer one 2yrs old and not used a lot so that it works again. The Dysons are very expensive vacuums positioned as premium, however, they are not constructed for easy take apart and reassemble which is necessary to eliminate the frequent problem of pulsating and not working. For the price of this vacuum it should not clog so easily and need to be disassembled cleaned and reassembled to fix and be usable.
You just don't know how much I really appreciate your video! I have had my V6 Dyson probably for about a year and a half, but I've only been emptying out the bin cup. However, I've noticed that so much crap is stuck, building up in the bin above the filter, but I couldn't get all of it out. Earlier today, I saw first video that I watched where a guy took out the tube filter, so I did that and rinsed it off like he did. At first I did take a straw brush to get a lot of it out of the bin cup but I decided to go for it and flipped it upside down, washed and scrubbed it without knowing how to take it apart!!! I watched two more UA-cam videos to find a video to see if I could do it right. One guy did a great video, but he didn't take apart the tube filter like you did, however he took it all the way apart, even using the torque screw driver (Holy Cow! Torque screwdrivers are expensive!!!) to get the filter piece off, which I don't think is that necessary unless you are having bad problems that can't be solved by doing the same cleaning method you just did in your video. Anyway, that guy is a motorcycle mechanic, and I'm pretty sure they love to take stuff apart down to nuts and bolts..... I think the way you did your video is enough for once or twice a year, or more for good PMCS - maintenance cleaning. Thanks!
So glad there was a video for such an annoying problem on a righteous product! Had no idea I could clean out the inside of the long/purple filter. I rinsed it constantly, but never opened it up. It totally fixed the problem! Huzzah!!
Thanks so much. Was almost going to buy a new one. Dyson troubleshooting suggested I needed a new battery. Bought one and it made no difference. Took the filter apart like you showed and found a big lump of dirt. All working now. You saved me a few hundred euro.
Thank you for a clear and concise explanation. My v7 was losing power and started the pulsating. It’s a new machine (couple of months old) but before calling support, I changed the filter to a brand new one so knew that wasn’t the issue. Following your instructions, I took it apart and cleaned it out. That improved it but then it started up again. In reading your readers posts, I decided to to check the rug attachment again even though it only had a few hairs in it. Viola! There was hair and debris just visible in the opening. Removed and all is well. Thanks to your excellent video, I am no longer afraid to take it apart for through cleaning if I need to. Neighbors helping neighbors, UA-cam is a Godsend! Thumbs up 👍 given.
Thank you! This was by far the most helpful video for getting rid of that pulsation problem, because you touched on so many of the possible causes. Really appreciate the fact that you covered all the bases in a single video!
Ok, watched your video before I ordered a new $50 battery for my V6 with the same symptoms as yours. Used a butter knife to open filter. So much dust. Cleaned, wash, dried and it runs like a champ. You saved me $50. Thank you and LeeAnn for your video!
Hi Steve. Thanks for a great video. I thought I would have to replace my V6 until I watched your video. I rinsed out the filter before but I had no idea it could be taken off and when I did just like yours, it was a gigantic ball of dirt inside, making the vacuum pulse and then stop. Filter cleaned reinstalled and vacuum is running like a charm. Thanks again.
Thank you! In the past I’ve just tossed cheaper vacuums. But this one was too expensive to not give it a try when it stopped working correctly. You’ve saved me $300 for a new Dyson in the span of seven minutes. What a nice little victory.
I have been cleaning my Dyson filter pretty regularly but recently it kept pulsing, did everything in this video and it has better suction now, then it has in 2 years. Saved me me a few hundred bucks. Thanks
Steve, your the best. I thought I was cleaning my Dyson until it would only work for ten seconds, then I found your video. Now my Dyson works like new. Stay safe, we mortals need you. Peace and much love 🌻
I have watched several videos on this subject. You are the first one to show how to clean that top filter!! Waiting for filter to dry, but it was full of yuk, hoping that was the problem
Steve you just saved me a couple hundred dollars, I just cleaned out my Dyson(there was a hard piece of plastic stuck in the housing) and now it's working like new, many thanks Bro.
We thank you so much. We were so upset over not having it even a year and it was already useless. We at first wanted to also order one for my parents but when ours started acting up we changed our mind. But you helped us a lot. Thank you.
OMG revolutionary. I was wondering why the unit was becoming progressively louder and went in to this start stop mode. The inner tube filter was full! Thank you so much!
Thank you! Completely took apart the filters in my Dyson Slimline V6 Animal, washed and cleaned thoroughly (had only ever washed filter and didn’t know it could be taken apart to this extent) and the problem ended up being a simple clog at the base. Someone sucked up a Dum Dum wrapper. I’m the Dum Dum for not looking there first but at least I have a super clean machine. Appreciate your video!!!
Cleaning out the filter and screens is what does the trick. Thank you! It’s not enough just to clear out the junk from the attachment head. You do need to be careful separating the pieces with something wider than a screwdriver. Now it works just as good as new.
Best video on this (and I've watched many). Love all my Dysons. Have always cleaned them, but this vid showed two things I'd never done (taking the cylindrical filter apart and prying off the internal cage/filter. Bravo. Watching from Paris, France, BTW (Happily Transplanted Texan).
Thanx for the insight Steve - just fixed ours. Used warm soapy water and an old toothbrush to make the long filter as new. The machine must have some kind of anti-burnout capability - a regular, simple clean is all that is required.
Thank you so much for this tutorial. I kept rinsing the filter like Dyson said but I took it apart last night after watching your awesome video thinking I had nothing to lose. It was an expensive wall decoration as it was. I found so much hidden gunk in places I didn't even know were accessible before watching your video. My wall decoration is back to being best vacuum ever! Thank you so much.
you just saved me a $150 service bill at dyson. thank you so much! i was struggling with removing the parts because i was using a penny thinking it would do it, then i just did as you did and got myself a butterknife. worked like a charm :)
You are a legend! This has been happening for over a year and been driving me crazy. I knew it was a blockage somewhere but didn’t know where. Thanks so much.
Thank you so much for the tips I was going mad, didn't know the filter opened like that. But yet again thank you and God bless you and your whole family mate.
SO MANY THANKS TO YOU STEVE'S YOU DID MY DAY.. THE PROBLEM OF MY V6 WAS EXACTLY WHAT YOU SAID ... I DID I TREMENDOUS TUNED UP AND NOW IT WORKED AS A NEW.. THANKS AGAIN AND GOOD LUCK IN LIFE. ALAIN FROM QUEBEC CANADA..
You are a Gem saved my day, Noticed mostly human hair winds around the Base unit, cleared that with a knife and tweezers, the cone filter was the main prob, many bounces on the rubbish bin got most of it. Thanks.
Good man! You just saved me a few hundred dollars! I didn't realise how far you can pull it apart. I'd done the usual cleans and checks but after using a butter knife to open up the areas like you showed, mine looked exactly like yours! Chocka full of dust! Thank you again! 😊 I assumed it was the battery gone kaput after a few years!
This was the solution for me! I took apart the microfilter and found it was full of densely packed fine dust. Cleaned all the junk out of it and rebuilt it. Suction multiplied by 10! Starting and stopping no longer occurred! Fixed!
Thanks for making this video! I have a V7 and my clog wasn't in the filter, cup, long tube or roller. It was hiding in a channel near the brush head! I had to unscrew and remove the brush head as well as a narrow cover and then I was able to clear the clogged buildup. Watching your video inspired me to keep trying until I found it!
Thanks to you my Dyson is back to working properly, it just needed a full clean up and here i was thinking i might need a new machine. Thanks from Australia
Hi Steve, greetings from Australia, I did what you demonstrated and worked way before I opened the filter part section although I found it difficult to open. Your instructions are very clear and so very helpful. So appreciate you taking the time to share your experience with the rest of us.
Thanks a million for this video. My Dyson kept cutting out and me and I looked in all the obvious places but not the filter. I've 'cleaned' it before but never the way you showed us how and then was a ton of gunk inside it. 🤮 After getting rid of all of that, my Dyson works again. You've just saved me a lot of hassle and some money too bless you.
This is brilliant. Thought Dyson on way out. Followed these instructions. Solid mass in purple tube. Cleaned it all and is perfect 😊. Thanks saved me a lot of money 💰 Jan
For the last year I’ve been dealing with my vacuum going on and off!! Yay I fixed myself!!! Thank god for UA-cam and your video sir! Don’t need no man😂
I just watched you video over here in the UK. Our Dyson was 'pulsating' and we had given up on it. I thought I would get it out and try what you recommend. It is now running like a song. Excellent video - Thanks Steve!
Thanks for the video. It was obvious what needed to be done (clean it out), but it helps to see it first to be sure I'm not missing something. I cleaned it out and it works perfectly again. Piece of cake! Since its far from 90° outside, instead of washing the filter bag I just vacuumed it out with the hose attachment on my Dyson floor sweeper.
Keeping my fingers crossed that your 'fix' works. I cleaned the filter on the outside, and after figuring out how to remove the inner framework, I found and cleaned out lots of gunk. The filter is drying now. Thank you so much for your help in hopefully ending the pulsing.
Hats off to you for sharing this amazing fix to this annoying issue. Followed your steps and our Dyson is now operating like it's brand new again. Highly appreciated mate, was about to give up on £££ spent!
Thats spot on about the cone filter - they always get full of crap inside after a while, and just rinsing them under a tap is not enough to remove the dirt and hair thats trapped inside them. Most people dont realise how much crap is left inside after washing these filters under a tap, and of course, when you wash a filter full of dirt, the dirt inside takes longer to dry than the filter does, so this will still be wet when you put the filter back in the machine after washing it, which is no good either. The first indication that the cone filter is full of crap inside, is that the machine will only pulsate on MAX, but not on normal mode, so if yours does this, then dismantling the cone filter is your best bet, rather than taking off the shroud with a butter knife, as the shroud can be damaged doing this. Only dismantle the shroud if the filter is checked first and found to be clean and empty inside. Dyson will be making a lot of money from people buying new cone filters when theirs get full of dirt inside, and dismantling the cone filter is not something they say that you should do, but as you have proved, it works well! The exhaust filter also needs washing under a tap every few months too, and yes, it is actually washable! One other point - dont wash the dust cup in water, as this gets in the electical connectors and can cause them to corrode, so only clean the dust cup with a paint brush or something else, and dont use water. I have a V6 Absolute myself, and a V8, and I have had both of their cone filters apart like you showed, but mine were not as bad as yours. Another good tip for keeping the cone filter cleaner inside, is NEVER operate the motor when the bin is open for emptying, as you will just suck loads of dust from inside the central dust tube back through the cyclones and into the filter. Its easy to knock the motor trigger by mistake when emptying the bin, but its a no-no, so please avoid doing that, and your filter will stay cleaner longer inside.
You nailed it with the filter clean...this cleaner has been doing my head in. Cleaned every part of it but never thought to remove that sheath. Thanks dude!
I don't normally comment on UA-cam videos but thank you. I've watched about 15 videos showing just to rinse it, there was no blockages or anything it was driving me crazy xD
Hello Steve! Thanks to your inspiring video I was able to diagnose, isolate, and remedy my issue more easily. I was about to call the very nice helpful Ladies of Dyson who provide over the phone 1 on 1 support for battery replacement as I was confident my animal filter was clean as per instructions every 24 hrs of use wash filter. Plus it was also around the 5 year mark that could mean end of life for a battery of this type. I simply removed the tube filter and engaged the power. Voila no more pulsing. Then held filter upside down in an old plastic fruit bag from grocer and was able to tap out a mass of debris that was captured inside. Replaced filter. We are now up and running like a brand new device. Thank you sooo much from a overly dry region of USA for last 18 months. Now on to the 1st Dyson which has same issue will update. Staaay Saaafe N Blesssed
Helped me, I was ready to toss it as warranty finished and the pulsing is severe, I used the vacuum to pick up broken glass and thought I’d probably contributed to its early demise. However once I was prompted to inspect some of the curved joints I realised there was congestion of muck including cat hair, glass and dust - using a screwdriver I was able to clear it and now again working fine!
Oh, I made a video on charging the battery also, I think our battery lasted about 18 months before it wouldn't hold a charge anymore - Thank you for the comment!
thanks for the video. I think my issue was the brush head - something you didnt address here. maybe I will make a quick video myself. but I went ahead and cleaned out some of the filters you are showing - cant hurt. thanks for sharing!
Steve, the best-ever maintenance video about the Dyson V6 -- and I won *two* of them :) Thank you, I subscribed. My own hack on cleaning what we'd call the cam-shaft: I use Grime Boss wipes to remove the gross debris. And then I simply apply the slim nozzle of a *real* vacuum cleaner to that corrugated plastic molding. What vac? A Miele HEPA :)
Thanks for taking your time to post this video. I have a Dyson V6 and everything went smoothly until I got to the point of removing the dust shield from the motor as it took alot of prying but it finally was successful. By performing these steps this DID fix the pulse problem and I have a nice and super clean Dyson 👌
Just watched your video... thank you, was about to throw it out after not using for 3 years.. followed your tips with one extra.. there was a blockage in the swivel head..works like new. Thanks..
Thanks so much, cleaning the filter fixed the problem like shown in the video, that was the trick for us. We were thinking we would need to get a new one.
Thank you soooooo much for this most instructional video!!! I just knew that there was some way we could clean this more than we could see!!! Your step by step instructions saved the day for us!!!! Thank you!!!!! I have become a subscriber!!!
Thank you Steve for preparing this video. I got to the point in your video when you take apart the tube - and I found the blockage. I love my Dyson too - light, fast, easy to use, gets into corners.
I didn't know you can disassamble it this much with just a butter knive, I opened the spinning roll thingy too and overall I collected 2 hands full of long hairs, leaves and other debris. Now it works again like a charm!
Thank you - It was hard to get that filter open, but I finally did with your advice (although not a butter knife because mine was too wide) and emptied it. That did the trick!
Thank You! Great, easy to follow video! Just another suggestion about #2-Empy Completely: You state sometimes people use a butter knife to get up in there...I keep ChopSticks in a draw and use one to scrape out any dog hair or small debris. No sharp edges, cheap and disposable! Thanks again!
Thank you so much, you made it look so simple, I cleaned my vacum cleaner properly for the first time in two years, I can't believe all the gunk that was in it.!!!!

Great news, do you have dogs like us? Their hair can really plug up that pull out filter.
@@StevesRealWorld Yes we have to German Shepherds and is why I needed this vacuum. Such quick clean up helps me stay ahead of the mess.
I never thought to pull the top filter apart, but when I did I found the reason my vac was pulsing. My Dyson works like new again. Thanks so much :)
Great news - Thank you for the comment!

Love the Root Beer Dum Dums - Thank you for your comment!
Best advise was the top filter. No other video shows that part. Took mine apart and man-o-man was it dirty. Thank you.
Glad this video helped, It now seems like we need to do this every SIX months. BUT we have a lot of dogs in the house.. Thank you for your comment!
Mate....just fixed the wifey Dyson after watching this. Hearthfelt thanks from New Zealand !
Nice - hope she appreciate your repair job - Thank you for the comment!

The best explanation on how to correct the pulsing problem! Thank you.
Thank you.
Thanks for this. Enabled me to fix our vacuum once and for all. That last hair clog was the culprit!
God bless you. I was going absolutely crazy wondering how to fix my V6. This vid is the most helpful one I’ve ever watched. THANKYOU
Great and thank you for your comments, It's appreciated.
Yes this is the most helpful video on how to clean a Dyson , very greatful for that

had the same problem with the brush head I think. i went through a few steps of the video anyway but I think the culprit was the brush head.
Same here

Great video! The stop start was driving me nuts, even bought a new battery!
I do hope you got it fixed - Thank you for the comment!
Thank you for show me the correct method to clean the vacuumed, your vid is really helpful to me!
Thank you for your comment!
Keeping my fingers crossed that your 'fix' works. I cleaned the filter on the outside, and after figuring out how to remove the inner framework, I found and cleaned out lots of gunk. The filter is drying now. Thank you so much for your help in hopefully ending the pulsing.
Did it work? Thank you for your comment!
Thank you! Just washing the fabric filter was never going to work with all that rubbish in it. All working again.
Hats off to you for sharing this amazing fix to this annoying issue. Followed your steps and our Dyson is now operating like it's brand new again. Highly appreciated mate, was about to give up on £££ spent!
Oh my. This is exactly what my dyson is doing. I am going to clean the filters now Thank you!!!
Great Comment - Thank you.
Thank you for sharing this .
I was so panic when my dyson started to on and off,
But you saved my life
I really appreciate it
These instructions are exactly what I needed. My dyson is now working like a charm again. Thank you so much for putting this video up.
You nailed it with the filter clean...this cleaner has been doing my head in. Cleaned every part of it but never thought to remove that sheath. Thanks dude!
Good news - Thank you for the comment!
Thanks to you and this great video,I went ahead and stripped down my V6, cleaned and reassembled. Looks and performs like new now. Cheers !
Great News and good job! Thank you
thank you so much. we have fighting with our dyson for weeks and it finally works thanks to this!
I don't normally comment on UA-cam videos but thank you. I've watched about 15 videos showing just to rinse it, there was no blockages or anything it was driving me crazy xD
Thank you for your comment - Hope this helped you.
Thank you very much for this information. My vac was only doing that on max setting. Changing out the filter solved the issue! Thanks again!
Glad it helped! Thank you for the comment!
Thank you!
NICE - glad this helped and hopefully you get alot more life from this Dyson - Thank you for the comment!
Thanks so much for this.. I did everything but as it turned out it needed a battery..no gas this was helpful
Thank you.. I fixed my Dyson after watching ur video
Great 👍 Thank you for the reply.
Excellent video - that was a huge help, it worked a treat and got my Dyson vacuum working again. Thank you!
Very Nice - Glad this helped!
Steve, the best-ever maintenance video about the Dyson V6 -- and I won *two* of them :)
Thank you, I subscribed.
My own hack on cleaning what we'd call the cam-shaft: I use Grime Boss wipes to remove the gross debris. And then I simply apply the slim nozzle of a *real* vacuum cleaner to that corrugated plastic molding. What vac? A Miele HEPA :)
Awesome - Thank you.
Just cleaned the filter and it's working perfectly now! Thanks so much! You are a legend :) 👍🏼
Best video on how to properly clean these. Thanks.
Thanks for watching!
Thank you soooooo much for this most instructional video!!! I just knew that there was some way we could clean this more than we could see!!! Your step by step instructions saved the day for us!!!! Thank you!!!!! I have become a subscriber!!!
Glad it helped! Thank you for the comment!
Thank you Steve for preparing this video. I got to the point in your video when you take apart the tube - and I found the blockage. I love my Dyson too - light, fast, easy to use, gets into corners.
You are the man, that top filter of ours was full. Leaving it outside to dry in the sun. Thanks!
Sounds like yours was more full than ours - Thank you for the comment!
I didn't know you can disassamble it this much with just a butter knive, I opened the spinning roll thingy too and overall I collected 2 hands full of long hairs, leaves and other debris.
Now it works again like a charm!
Glad this helped! Thank you for the comment.
Thank you so much for this video! This video has only helped. My Dyson started working again!Yay!!!!
Nice vid Steve - Taking off the linear completely made HUGE difference!!!
Nice - Thank you for the comment!
Wow thanx !!! my dyson was pulsing didn’t know to clean the inside of the top filter ! Cheers from Australia 🍻
mate that was the best repair video ive ever seen ....easy to follow and concise ....great job
Thank you - It was hard to get that filter open, but I finally did with your advice (although not a butter knife because mine was too wide) and emptied it. That did the trick!
Nice job - Thank yo for the comment.
Thank You! Great, easy to follow video! Just another suggestion about #2-Empy Completely: You state sometimes people use a butter knife to get up in there...I keep ChopSticks in a draw and use one to scrape out any dog hair or small debris. No sharp edges, cheap and disposable! Thanks again!
Thanks Steve, that was brilliant. Done all the cleaning now just waiting for it to dry. Hopefully that has fixed my problem.
I hope this helped and Thank you for the comment!
Thank you for taking the time👍🏼
Buddy you just saved me going out and buying a new one, thanks so much! now its working like a charm!
Thank you so much….finally solved the problem after weeks of goggling.
Glad it helped - Thank you for the comment!
Thank you so much, you made it look so simple, I cleaned my vacum cleaner properly for the first time in two years, I can't believe all the gunk that was in it.!!!!
Hope the video helped. Thank you for the comment!
