- Welcome to my new series - Perky's Analog Gear Demos. Please subscribe!
Comparison of a vintage 1981 Boss CE-2 'Long Dash' chorus pedal and two of its modern counterparts: the Way Huge Blue Hippo MkII and Jam Pedals Waterfall. All three pedals have very similar circuitry and use the same BBD chips - Panasonic MN3007 and MN3101.
As stated in the video, whilst the depth knobs are largely similar on all 3 pedals, the maximum speed of the modulation varies greatly - with the Blue Hippo being able to modulate much faster than the other two. For all but the first demo, the modulation speed has been matched so as to better compare the fundamental sounds - but this means that the speed knobs are in different positions on each pedal.
The amp used is a Hughes & Kettner Puretone Combo fitted with Genalex Gold Lion 12AX7s and KT77s. The only microphone is a simple SM57. A Wampler Tweed '57 is the overdrive.
Personally, I don't think any chorus pedal will ever beat the sound of the CE-2 (except perhaps the CE-1!) - even in 2016 it's still spawning pedals derived from its analogue circuitry.
However, the Jam Pedals Waterfall does come incredibly close to capturing the same vibe & magic. The Blue Hippo is still a great sounding chorus but for me lacks a bit of the 'chime' of the others and isn't as inspiring to use. Truth be told though, they're all incredibly similar - as you will hear.

really helpful comparison! Thanks :) CE2 sounds so natural and comfortable.
It's 'the' sound :-) The Waterfall can get incredibly close though! Thanks for watching :-)
@@JoePerkinsMusic waterfall is a ce2 clone with tonepad's mods on the switches. that's all.
@@ksneric That's all you need.
@@JoePerkinsMusic it's great effect for sure. I've build 4-5 clones of it.
CE-2.Happy with it, no plans to change.
If I want a good stereo chorus I go with Maxon ASC-10.
three great pedals and it makes it hard to choose a favourite. really like the WATERFALL from JAM pedals but the BLUE HIPPO form Way Huge can get a little bit more vibey but the chime is lacking and the BOSS pedal, well I have nothing bad to say about it! GREAT video!
The Waterfall is the one on my board - but there's just something about the CE-2! Can't go wrong with either! :-)
CE 2 sounds just like a Jazz Chorus Amp. Identical really-it's a sound we all are so used too as much as a Marshall or Ampeg. It's a classic "staple" That said the Jam is a great pedal (I have one) .....it's got a bit of a Leslie univibe thing going on. It's different but cool as well. The way huge IMO does not come close to the other 2. If I had to pick it's hard to argue with that classic Roland circuit design-but the waterfall has its own sound and mojo that has some of the CE 2 magic with some warm univibe/rotary speaker magic Mixed in.
My CE-2 finally died last week. Rip..... Had a CE-3 before it which died after 15+ yrs. Not even stomped on but used via a pedal loop. Got a TC Corona but its watered down even in stereo.
Time to find another CE-2 then!! ;-)
Just one chorus demo, please 🙏, without Come As You Are, for Pete's sake, lol!
But seriously, I love the Way Huge one. How long ago could you still get them in the bigger box? (Im no fan of the new little boxes. I already have 7 big box ones, so...the new little ones don't fit nice n flush with the bigs. Although, I've got 2 little ones, so...they r starting to build their own collection, I guess.).
They were released c.2014, from memory - were only around for a couple of years before they moved to the small box. I see MkII's crop up on eBay from time to time, so they are around!
The small yellow puppet in the background. Where do I know him from? :)
Aha - that's Flat Eric! :P He was in a Levi's Jeans ad back in the 90s - and the music video for the Mr Oiso track that was in the ad, Flat Beat. :P ua-cam.com/video/hY6WTuvyF7Y/v-deo.html
Joe Perkins Music Awesome. Thanks for reminding me. It was driving me bats. ;)
Aha no worries! Eric has been in my studio for years - he's the producer ;-) hehe
Did you find the Blue Hippo to be noisier than the other two? I just got a MKiii Hippo and it is really noisy -- much noisier than my MIJ CE2.
Don't remember, tbh - I moved the BH on shortly after shooting this as it was a little too thick in the low end for my liking
Blue Hippo sounds a little more bassy and therefore seems to be less transparent.
Ce2 is the best!
the Blue Hippo was good, but not as good as the Waterfall or CE2.
Eric Chambers Agreed!
Joe Perkins Music personally I have the Waterfall. one of the first pedals I ever owned was a CE2. I foolishly sold it but never forgot what an awesome chorus it was. I wanted an updated version of a CE2 and tried many but was never happy until I got the Waterfall. fantastic pedal.
Eric Chambers Yep - the Waterfall is incredibly close to the vintage CE-2! You chose wisely :-)
Joe Perkins Music I'm thinks out buying the waterfall of a MIJ CE2. Which has a lower noise floor? Thanks.
The Waterfall - but honestly, not by much. The CE-2 is incredibly quiet for a 36 year old pedal - I frequently run it into overdrive pedals with no problems at all.

Easy ... CE-2.
