  • Welcome to Perky's Analog Gear Demos. Please subscribe for more demos of vintage & rare effects pedals!
    So - today, we'll be looking at two of the best-respected modern, boutique chorus pedals....the JAM Waterfall and Analog.Man Mini Chorus. Both are based on vintage pedals....and for good measure, we'll be looking at those too!
    How do these two amazing chorus pedals compare? And do they sound like the oldies they're based on?
    What do you think? Which is your favourite? And why? Comment below!
    Guitar is a Gibson SG with Mojo Gold Foil Pickups recorded through a Dr Z DB4 (SM57), a Hughes & Kettner Puretone Combo (sE Electronics RNR1 Ribbon) and a Cornell Romany Plus (recorded with a 1970s MD441)

    Very helpful video. I own a waterfall circuit in the Jam Pedals Ripply Fall; I agree on the high end chime. Looking to get an Analogman mini chorus to use for modulation on his ARDX20 on my other board.

    Demonfx mini chorus uses the MN3007 chip too. Same ole noisy BBD chorus as the Analogman chorus but $50 v $300. Build quality isn't as good but for sure good enough. As good as 95% of pedals tbh. Yea I love my analogman Sunlion with NKT275/OC44 (theres no equivalent to to this) but wouldn't pay $300 for an effect I seldom use. I've owned the AM and the demonfx chorus and yea the demonfx is virtually the same. Like 99% the same.

    Great comparison! I got the BOSS CE2w first, then the JAM Waterfall, and now I'm getting the AnalogMan Mini-Chorus! Those are pretty tones on the CE2w and Waterfall... but one can only handle so much sweetness. The high end of the CE2w and the Waterfall is too much, and it wears out the ear. I got sick of them. The AnalogMan Chorus is warm and full. Mike knows what he's doing. I have high expectations for the Mini Chorus!

    Analogman over the EHX. Jam Man over the CE-2 ( very close ). Jam Man was the Best of them all. I'd also check out the Free the Tone Tri Avatar ( my favorite chorus pedal ), The Tortuga Martini, The Shiva Little Wave ( for that 80's rack chorus sound ). I'd be curious to hear the Analogman Mini with the Depth switch ? Fantastic Demo.

    I’ve got an old CE2 with an analogman on the way. Something about the CE2, it does this like slight mid push thing. Best chorus ever. And I also believe there wasn’t enough chorus used in the 80s as well.

    There's not a whole lot special about MN3007's other than their place in history. They're pretty subtle and darker than what a lot of people nowadays are looking for, hence many of the new boutique choruses and delays that use replica chips usually sound brighter, wider, more obvious. A lot of people are buying pedals for their own personal enjoyment and not so much to use in recordings and mixes with full bands and things, hence most consumers are looking for a "wow factor", and pedal makers are constantly trying to deliver by stepping things up a notch. Classic vintage pedals were much more reserved and subtle, but that is really great for recording.
    If you're really into MN3007 chorus, go track down a Diamond Halo Chorus before they shoot up in price. Diamond was put out of business late last year, but there's still a handful of new Halo Chorus pedals with NOS MN3007's in them at shops in Canada, and a few used online - the market hasn't realized it's scarcity quite yet.

    Which would you think is better for jangly postpunk, the analogman or jam? I’m thinking the jam, but really wish you could get it with a mix feature like the analogman. But the jam sounds clear enough that you wouldn’t need a mix knob? I have and love the ce-2 but it definitely kind of dampens the chime and adds some congestion

    • @JoePerkinsMusic
      @JoePerkinsMusic  2 роки тому +1

      I'd say the Analogman is a bit thinner in the low end than the JAM, so for me it works better with overdrive for chimey sounds.

    Joe, do you know if the Waterfall can handle over 9v like the Analogman mini? I've just bought an early version with the mn3007. It seems the newer production ones possibly have reissue mn3207. Anyway! I've also sent an email to Jam pedals, but really you were the first person I thought of when this question popped up. I love my analogman, especially at 12v, but I've started craving more of the ce2 sound lately. I should have purchased an old ce2, but I'll get there! Thanks for any time and help you might have to share. :)

      Hi mate - I don't, I'm afraid! I believe that the chip AM uses runs optimally at 15V, which is why Mike allows for higher voltages, but with the JAM I only ever ran it at 9V...it _may_ be able to take more, but only JAM will be able to tell you that. Sorry I can't be of more help!!

    Analogman has a low end that the Small Clone doesn’t, but it doesn’t distort your sound like alot of other chorus pedals do. The high end is also tamed down a touch. Everything about it is better. Considering the price difference, the small clone will do just fine.

    Honestly, I thought the JAM waterfall and Analog.Man were strikingly different than the CE2 and the small clone. could easily tell them apart. That said, I also preferred the Analog.Man to the EHX. I did like the CE2 better than the JAM, but the JAM had a fuller frequency response that I really liked. I think both modern pedals did a great job of being inspired yet creating their won awesome unique sound. Even though I own two CE2's from the early 80's and a 80's era small clone....I'm definitely thinking about buying the JAM (I already have a Bi-Chorus so I don't need the mini).
