no matter how far film emulation has come, nothing comes close to the texture and feel of real film.

Looking great! The vertical scratch is at the emulsion side (they appear yellow/brown on a print or scan from a color negative) and since it's perfectly straight, it must have happened at the gate (aperture plate). I suggest you check your gate and try to find out what's causing it. Probably a burr, which can be removed by polishing with a very fine sandpaper stick and a drop of fine machine oil.

Wow thank you! I've been trying to figure out what the issue is. I'm going to take my camera to a rental house today and give it a clean.

What exactly is a burr? What would I be looking for there?

@@jacobpietras9108 A tiny piece of metal, caused by a tool. It cuts deep into the emulsion. Rub your finger all around the open gate and feel it. Then you just sand it with some 2000 grid and fine machine oil.

@@truefilm6991 cool! I’ll give this a try. I hav felt around the gate and don’t feel anything. do you suggest taking the gate out to do this process?
Could the problem also be cause by the piece of plastic which the film first makes contact with before reaching the gate (this piece is in the middle of the camera)?

@@jacobpietras9108 Do you still have the loop formers? This particular scratch cannot be caused by the loop formers though. They look like tiger claw scratches, not dead straight. Taking the gate out is a complicated process, because you need to remove the baffle plate for that. You can reach the gate without opening the camera. It's fiddly, but it works. The piece that applies pressure to the pressure plate (don't lose it!) Is in the way, but you can maneuver around it. Try also with a toothpick around the edges until you find the spot of the burr. Try different angles. I polished the gate with a strip of sand paper CA-glued to a wooden kebap stick. I strongly encourage you to remove the loop formers BTW. They were added to the K-1 and K-2 along with the upgrade to daylight spools. They don't retract properly anymore and usually cause nasty scratches. They are completely unnecessary also. PLMK if you want to remove these (in case they are still there) I already walked a few people through the process.

Looks so good! Did you use ND filters of some kind (in the small filter tray or in front of the lens) at all? Would love to know your lens/ND set up as it's what I'm trying to look into at the minute.
