I agree. I agree with all of this but specifically with loving yourself even when your hair is not maintained. I got Locs to essentially always have my hair “done” and obsessing over it not being neat defeats the purpose. I’ve been loc’d for almost for almost 6 years now and I still struggle with that.
your locs look bombbbbb, i had to unfortunately cut out all my locs ( i made them really small, they were thinning out and i wasn't taking the best care of them). but when i start my locs again, i want them super thick like yours
I love your hair either way. It is thick dark and lush. I particularly like it when you haven’t twisted it for a while. It resembles a lion’s mane and looks magnificent.
Yes, sister. Embrace the wool. It's meant to loc. Twisted hair = a twisted perspective of self, in my opinion. I don't like the scalp squares look. I think 4c hair is the illest! You look fantastic and it's only going to get better. I only use clarifying shampoo and that is it. Keeps everything light and fluffy and oh so soft. Cheers.
Elijah Black I use a clarifying shampoo from the health food store called Andalou. Find one that’s made with citrus and cleansing...nothing creamy. Regular shampoos strip your hair so that you HAVE to use conditioner which in turn leaves a build up of product in the hair.
This video is RIGHT👏🏾ON👏🏾TIME👏🏾 for me!! I decided last night to stop retwisting my hair, at least so often. I was retwisting on average every 3 weeks after a wash because I felt I 'needed' it. Now my roots are thinner than the rest of my locs. It's stupid because I adore the way my puffy roots give me volume when I don't twist, but I felt like they had to look neat for work. I'm 6 weeks away from my 1 year mark. My other issue is I don't think they are soft. They are actually quite dense and not very flexible or squishy where budding first occurred. I'm on a mission to find a good moisture routine that doesn't incur buildup. I found myself nodding along with your comments in the video. You are gorgeous and I absolutely 💖love💖 the thickness and fullness of your hair. And I'm starting to feel more confident about my own appearance complete with frizz and puffy roots,😅 lol. Thank you for sharing 💗💗💗
Phianett I can relate to your journey! I too was washing and retwisting at the same time thinking I needed to keep them looking “fresh.” A guy I met when leaving a grocery store last weekend told me not to retwist often but wash it two to three times a month. So I have to find the right moisturizers and wash only. I plan to go with the interlocking, still thinking about it though.
@@sharita7270 In my personal opinion I feel like interlocking doesn't really give that big and juicy look that she has in this video. I started off my locs using interlocking then I transitioned to palm rolling. My locs started off sort of skinny and tight but a month after palm rolling and I already started noticing a difference in size. I ended up cutting off my interlocked ends because I wanted to and I didn't think it looked good with the rest of my locs since they were relatively bigger.
Yes, this video is encouraging. I am learning to embrace my locs based on what makes me happy and not what is trendy. It was easy to adore my locs when I first got them retwised, but I have learned to love them in all phases while going through this loc journey!!!
My son hair is identical to yours. He has gone about 2 months without a retwist....and its looking great! I was soooo surprised. And it looks sooooo natural, thick and fluffy. I agree with you 100 %
👌🏾👌🏾👌🏾 leave your roots alone especially in the winter! I was contemplating on doing a video on how to care for your hair between styles. I love the fullness of your locs, that's how they're supposed to look! 😃
Gratitude Queen! I’m at the beginning of my journey on month 4, yay 💃🏽, and I just went two months without a retwist and I could have went longer actually. It was frizzy but very flexible with styles, I loved the fullness as well. This time I’m going to wait 4 months. My locs are small and it showed me how thin my hair is at the top which is another reason I’ll bee waiting. Thanks for sharing!
I was under the dryer after washing and re-twisting my hair and your video popped up and I was like wow your hair looks amazing and I just love the fullness. I have thick locs and struggle with my hair when it’s not fresh and neat coupled with the looks I get at work when I see people looking at my roots and not my eyes. I really want to give my hair a break and your video has encouraged me. Thank you.
@@SisterSoko I actually love it, I really just want my hair to breathe for awhile, I'm not a fan of parts either and with only 65 locs they tend to make my head look bigger 😂 but when the new growth hits, the volume looks lovely on my round face. To keep a semi professional look (career in Gov), I braid them after a wash, undo once air dried, and wear them crinkled or in cute pony or bun.
Your locs are lovely! I prefer the fuller roots look. I’m really close to the two year mark so I re-twist maybe every 6-8 weeks! My shampoo schedule happens more frequently!
I’m one year and 9 months in and my locs are really thick, which I enjoy. I would go periods in free form and it was my absolute favorite but I started to let opinions get to me and would start retwisting once a month. After my last one I’m just overrrr trying to keep up with it. I have loose curly hair & it looks good for maybe 2 weeks with a retwist and then the high of that is over immediately. It’s so much more comfortable having thick roots and volume and having a more low maintenance approach.
I agree to this video 👏👏👏 I've had locs for 14 months and I love them! My scalp is very sensitive and I hate product build up so when I decided to stop going to a loctian, MY HAIR CHANGED FOR THE BETTER. I only lightly retwist when I wash to avoid that scalp look. I like the thick puffy look. I have gotten soooo many compliments on my hair and I think its because I dont over do it with products and styles, I just let it hang naturally 😊 Aloe vera is the absolute best product, I mix peppermint oil and retwist with it and lightly oil my ends
Your hair type makes it so easy to go without retwisting too often, and yes it looks so beautiful puffy. My hair type is closer to straight and not retwisting makes it look too messy, but it's still good to give it some rest and not do it too often.
That's my issue. My hair is thin and 3C with super shrinkage (I'm surprised it locked, to be honest). I twist every 1-2 months. I also wouldn't mind not retwisting often if I had her hair texture. It looks good. I'd look a mess going beyond 2 months.
I love your locs! I started my current set 2 months ago. My previous set I was re-twisting every 2 weeka with all sorts of products and my locs were tight, heavy and had a lot of build up. I wanted my locs to be light and fluffy and to learn to embrace the frizz.
First of all, I don't know how I'm just discovering you; your locks are GORGEOUS and (equally important) HEALTHY. That hairline is EVERYTHING. I'm a complete newbie (just locked 4 months ago), so I'm binge watching your videos and I'm so encouraged. Just a thought about the buildup your spoke about - If you have locks and want to avoid buildup, the secret is interlocking. All you need is a tool. ZERO product. But then your locks always look clean, so you seem to be doing things right lol!!! Also the resolution of your camera and picture quality of your videos is goals!
Such beautiful locs! I'm one year into my journey and have never retwisted. At this point, there's no reason to since it will change the structure of my locs.
Just decided to stop retwist my my hair. That was the only reason I went to a loctition. In the age of Covid-19, I decided to maintain my hair myself and I am not doing all that! Looking forward to starting this journey.
Sista...you and your locs are BEAUTIFUL!!! I truly love to hear that you are embracing "semi/freeform" locs! I am doing this and love it! I don't twist, I just separate them! Continue the loc journey! #Respect!
Beautiful woman and Beautiful locs and my locs turn 5 years in April of this year. I only get my locs done professionally once a year . Very great reasons . I still make sure I wash my locs every two weeks and I make sure I oil my locs every time I wash my locs and I make sure I separate my locs . My mom or my brother doesn’t like the fact that I don’t get my locs done once a month like they recommend me to do . 🙋🏾♀️ I go for the semi free form look or just the free form look in general.
Your locs are so beautiful and im guessing this my sign to not retwist my locs for a while because this is my fourth time seen a video like this ! thank you
I retwist every about 8 weeks but I hope I can go longer as my hair get longer. I just met my 1 yr locaversary😃. You hair looks amazing just like that! I love my hair in its fluffy state way more than a fresh retwist.
I've been loc'd for almost 5 years and always been self conscious of not retwisting my hair for the exact reason you stated. In the past I've retwisted every 6-8 weeks but I am moving towards semi- freeforming . Some of the bases of my locs are thinning so I decided not to style or retwist but 4x a year.
Would prefer and take this look always over the fresh retwist scalp showing look, this is what it means to have dreads and what I think of when I think about dreadlocks, your hair looks really good
I get my locs professionally retwisted roughly every 3-6 months and just focus on keeping my hair clean and smelling good. I fell in love with my puffy roots and God-given texture a long time ago 🤗🤗
Love this video i retwist twice a year mainly for the purpose of self love as you discussed. it forces me to always see myself as beautiful even though it goes against society's norm
Hello! I'm new to the loc world I have baby locs they are 8 months old and I plan not to retwist too often, I've seen so many people lose their locs and/or their edges due to over-manipulation and that terrifies me. I love your locs and they do look thick and luscious
I'm late to the party. It's the last day of July and I put my locs in in November. I'm learning how to leave my hair alone even tho I want to retwist the front all the time. I'm finding that I like the frizzy look as long as it's not so much in the front. I didn't start with short hair but lord I wish it would grow 😭
i LOVE this video. Perfect timing. I workout 4-5 days a week and SWEAT ALOT. Ive also decided to let them be free in between visiting my loctician. Thank you for this video!
This is my reason for holding off. About to start up a 5 day a week, with 3 days being yoga, or hot yoga regimen. It's a waste of time and money to retwist now LOL
I really like the thicker overall appearance too. I’ve had my hair grown into dreads for over 12 years and have trimmed then twice- the first time I cut my locs from waist to my bra strap (about 11-16 inches) last year when I went back into the Ballet and started cross-training heavily for the Ballet. It was extremely heavy and way too long!
Hey sis! I am not quite there just yet in terms of taking longer in between retwists. I am currently 9 months in the loc game. I have soft hair that likes to tangle, draws in moisture and frizzes big and can be a barrier to locking appropriately and on time. Currently, I have some locs that are almost completely locked, but I still have so many that are somewhat locked and others not so much. Without retwisting at least every month; I am unable to control the slipping, marrying, looping, and frizzing way out of control. It would cause me not to like how my locs are progressing and what they would eventually mature into. Even going four weeks is hard enough. 3 weeks is too soon. And lastly, my hair grows away from my locs. Semi-freeforming is not for everyone. I look at your locs and I think they are absolutely beautiful. My locs and hair does not look like yours at the stage youre at when you recorded the video. Your locs and hair/new growth does not look unkempt in any way. You juxtapose my picture at the same stage and mine really does. Last time for real, length makes a difference. My hair is still pretty short and is weightless. It can make going longer than every four weeks harder because it is too short for a ponytail or to pulll up and no longer in the cute beginner loc stage.
Gypsy Curls Hello Gypsy when i started my locs my hair is very soft to so in the beginning of my loc journey i used those little round black rubber bands.to keep my locs together at the root and it worked very well.i have now been on my loc journey for 5 years. and they are thick. I get a lot of compliments on my locs just a suggestion for you because it helped me. Bless you🎉
I’m no longer twist either, my hair is longer thicker stronger, I love it, when I ran up on your video and I saw your hair I just started screaming YES, YES YES, because that is the look that I am trying to achieve, your hair is beautiful
I started thinking in the middle of my locs so l stopped retwisting for at the a month at a time. So far my hair is regaining new growth where it was thinning. So yeah your right!😄
I love rosewater or orange blossom spritzed on my locs and I squeeze it in after- zero buildup possible. I use wild growth oil on my scalp a couple of times a week. I braid loose new growth onto my locs 3 times a year cuz my new growth grows away from my locs. Full lightweight locs is the result. I also keep them covered alot. I've just combined them so the roots are even thicker now. Locs is freedom - I see alot of over thinking on UA-cam.
@@_elommusk I started November 2016 with 2inches of hair. When I was a loose natural it was hard to retain length I have fine fragile hair so I've always concentrated on my scalp health. I've been keeping the lengths moisturised in particular this year and it's retaining length! 😊 You can see my locs on Insta I don't post pics often so there isn't a recent one - search for afrobites xx
The health of your hair wins. I love your hair that way. My hair is thick like yours. I think I am getting my third set of locs back in September. You make me miss them! Stunning.
lol made it to the end of the video....i usually retwist about every 2 months(if i actually have a day off to sit && retwist). like you said you're usually watching tv or something && then get side tracked so it takes even longer lol
I really like your locs with the puffy roots. I think they add wonderful character to the style. If I had locs that looked like yours I would re-twist no more than once every 2 months and proudly wear my full puffy roots styled or unstyled for the rest of the time.
You look fabulous w/o the re-twist. At the beginning of my journey. I re-twisted every 3 weeks now I re-twist every 3 months unless my hair becomes unruly. I shampoo weekly & plat or braid or pin up the locks in a loose style if it’s hot or I wear it down (my go 2 style).
I love your locs...I'm going to wash my locs this weekend and not retwist it's been about a month or so since i washed and retwisted I was going to the salon and it was super expensive now I'm doing them myself but definitely going to try the wash and go
I don’t retwist. It’s been 13 mo. Since I started my locs. I really am enjoying the fullness at the scalp and I have lots of compliments how thick healthy my locs look
I do this. I understand what you mean about your locs being more fluffy and full. I love the volume of ny hair when I dont retwist for a while. I actually dont like the way my hair looks when freshly washed. Lol
when i was about to start my journey in 2020 my girl said should not let it look like a mat (by not retwisting) and i left me under the impression that i must twist regularly, got me paranoid. never again! i could see right quick that it thins out my locs. thank you for this information.
I’ll be 10 months locd on the 12th and I use to retwist every two weeks and then I started retwisting every month. I’m a mother of a 3 year old and a full time student and honestly I find that once a month retwisting is better for me time and hair health wise. I spray it with water and I put whatever oil I have on hand and if I feel like (in your words) a mop then I’ll either wrap it up or I’ll be a sexy mop lol. (I live by the mop saying btw)
I did not start my locs to still have high maintenance hair. The whole point was to do less not more. I retwist every 4 to 6 weeks because my locs are only 5 months old and my texture sort of unravels quickly but I plan on once every two months soon as my locs mature. Even now I do “soft” retwists to get away from that scalpy look
I've had my locs since 1998 or so. I've been that one to retwist every two weeks, because I loved that fresh look. Well I am getting older and I started with thin hair so the retwisting has been taxing on my hair and scalp. I will rewash every two weeks, sometimes shampoo (bar) and condi or sometimes just a condi wash. Two weeks ago I did not retwist. it is time for a washing but was thinking to retwist now seeing your vid I will go another two without retwisting. I wash and roll on pipe cleaners. I love the thicker look to my hair too. Past the retwisting has put too much tension on scalp and locs so no retwisting and embracing the frizz is the new me. I did hit my edges with gel today just because I have an issue with one side due to a reaction to some all natural product. Anyway, loved the video and your hair is amazing. Thank you for sharing.
I'll say it again. You have one of the best crown of locs out here! 😍 I love everything you discussed in this video! And of course you're gorgeous sis! For me my husband loves my full hair look right along with me! When it's freshly twisted he has to, ahem, keep his hands out of my hair!🤣 I retwist once a month and will stretch it to 6 weeks. No more since my hair grows away from my locs. But this next retwist will be after only 3 weeks because it's my 40th birthday and I want a fresh retwist to start the celebration!
This is a great video. Thank you for posting and sharing your insights. I have recently started locs and I have fine hair. I did my first retwist after 2 months. I am going to begin going longer in between. My hair doesn't have a super tight curl pattern so it may not want to loc as easily as some but I'm excited for the journey.
In a few days, it'll make 7 months since my last retwist. Usually I get my hair done every 4 months, but something told me not to just yet. Not only is it so much less taxing on the scalp as compared to constant maintenance, I've unlocked another level of self-love. I've mastered every quick style EXCEPT, the bun lol. I'm the first person to grow locs in my family so I've been looking on TikTok and UA-cam for tips and tricks, and it's still a challenge. I know I'll master it soon though. The new growth is thick, and I love it. Although I kinda miss that "nobody talk to me right now, I'm fine again" feeling associated with a retwist, I just appreciate having locs either way at this point. I love your locs btw.
I wasn’t going to retwist my two strand twist starter loc I only did it for a wedding, I see where you coming from because when I first did my retwist I did not like how it came out so now I’m kind of going to free form it so my hair can go grow in and I’ll just wash it my self til I want a retwist.
Hey sis, new subbie here! I have retwisted in 2 months... honestly I’m not going to retwist all year. I love the fullness that it’s giving me and since my hair grows into the loc marrying is not a problem! 😃
Like for loving yourself without a “fresh style” what is fresh anyway? I don’t retwist often maybe every 30 days, mostly because I’m lazy. But also I have fine, dense, course natural hair so retwisting fine hair is a challenge and you risk thinning hair more easily. You can actually create super amazing ponytail tails on hair that’s hasn’t been retwisted often. Gel and pulling it back makes a sleek style on hair that hasn’t been retwisted

Just use water and oil sis. That's basically all we really need as black people.

In my personal opinion I feel like interlocking doesn't really give that big and juicy look that she has in this video.
I just want to see how to do your makeup, I love how you always look simple and natural.
Thank you.
I haven't retwisted in 2 mos, plan on going another 3-4 mos
Sounds good...how are you finding it? x
Gawd I hate retwists... I'm combining mine bc my hair too thick and I'm tenderheaded
You and your locs are gorgeous! 😍
agreed! retwisting so often can cause breakage. your hair is lovely without all the maintenance!
Thank you! x
Your locs are lovely! I prefer the fuller roots look. I’m really close to the two year mark so I re-twist maybe every 6-8 weeks! My shampoo schedule happens more frequently!
I don’t no which one is mo beautiful, her face R her hair....
James Mitchell seriously they both are stunning 😩
kyra williams them Ebony eyes though...
Her voice as well 😍
Both are, especially that accent.
THANKS 👍 FOR DOING THIS VIDEO, BECAUSE WE NEED TO KNOW JUST HOW ""BEAUTIFUL OUR HAIR REALLY IS,,,,PLAIN AND SIMPLE"",,,WESTCOAST LISTENING.."
You are my loc crush!!!!❤️. Everything you say about locs is true!!! 😃👍
Yea mine too
Dchardinay Cole 👍
I was blessed with family that glorified big thick voluptuous hair. That is beauty. I give thanks daily.
🙌🏾🙌🏾
I think it looks better puffy and natural...soft and comfy...so far after 8 months no retwisting...no products..only soft locs
Yay a UK based loc'd sister! I'm so excited to start my loc journey
I cried watching this. Thank you so much for helping me. I'll resist.
This message came at the right time! Thank you Ancestors and thank YOU Sista for reminding me that I am enough as I am! 💜
i LOVE this video.
I totally agree with you...I have gone 4 months the longest without retightening my locs...I love it
I really like the thicker overall appearance too. I’ve had my hair grown into dreads for over 12 years and have trimmed then twice- the first time I cut my locs from waist to my bra strap (about 11-16 inches) last year when I went back into the Ballet and started cross-training heavily for the Ballet. It was extremely heavy and way too long!
12 years????really??😮I'm about 3 months into the loc fam and I'm loving it.cant wait to get to your stage...12 years!I love that.well done sis! 🤗🙆♀️
Onyinye Onyenezi So proud and happy for you 😊 congratulations 🎉
Thanks so much Ava.💃💃💃🤗
Agreed. I would retwist maybe once a year, but im going on the second year without a single one so far
Wow!
It's only Gabs what’s your Instagram?
Preach it Queen. You are so beautiful & your locs are stunning.😍😍😍
Beautiful locs!!! I haven’t retwisted since before Christmas!
Me too
Lady Loc’d Teri me too well 12/24 lol
Gypsy Curls
Hello Gypsy when i started my locs my hair is very soft to so in the beginning
of my loc journey i used those little round black rubber bands.to keep my locs together at the root and it worked very well.i have now been on my loc journey for 5 years. and they are thick. I get a lot of compliments on my locs
just a suggestion for you
because it helped me.
Bless you🎉
beautiful, thick healthy roots, disrespectful locs, freakin awesome. They look light and fluffy. Luv them.
I’m no longer twist either, my hair is longer thicker stronger, I love it, when I ran up on your video and I saw your hair I just started screaming YES, YES YES, because that is the look that I am trying to achieve, your hair is beautiful
I’m getting use to this now and it feels amazing actually
I started thinking in the middle of my locs so l stopped retwisting for at the a month at a time. So far my hair is regaining new growth where it was thinning. So yeah your right!😄
I’m glad you’re seeing some improvements 🙌🏾 how long will you leave it until you retwist again?
I love rosewater or orange blossom spritzed on my locs and I squeeze it in after- zero buildup possible. I use wild growth oil on my scalp a couple of times a week. I braid loose new growth onto my locs 3 times a year cuz my new growth grows away from my locs. Full lightweight locs is the result. I also keep them covered alot. I've just combined them so the roots are even thicker now. Locs is freedom - I see alot of over thinking on UA-cam.
Donna Reid when did you start your loc journey??? All those products sound amazing, your hair must be growing like crazy!
@@_elommusk I started November 2016 with 2inches of hair. When I was a loose natural it was hard to retain length I have fine fragile hair so I've always concentrated on my scalp health. I've been keeping the lengths moisturised in particular this year and it's retaining length! 😊
You can see my locs on Insta I don't post pics often so there isn't a recent one - search for afrobites xx
I love the roots showing. It's more attractive to me. And it's true learning to love the natural you.
The health of your hair wins. I love your hair that way. My hair is thick like yours. I think I am getting my third set of locs back in September. You make me miss them! Stunning.
I just got mine retwisted 3 days ago I hadn’t done it since October been growing them for nearly 4 years now
Spot on! I retwist once a month. I like the juicy loc look.
Your locs are by far the BEST I have ever seen!!!! Absolutely beautiful!! ❤
lol made it to the end of the video....i usually retwist about every 2 months(if i actually have a day off to sit && retwist). like you said you're usually watching tv or something && then get side tracked so it takes even longer lol
I really like your locs with the puffy roots. I think they add wonderful character to the style. If I had locs that looked like yours I would re-twist no more than once every 2 months and proudly wear my full puffy roots styled or unstyled for the rest of the time.
I think your hair looks gorgeous, love the coils and kinks and fullness and color of your natural hair it’s a beautiful masterpiece 😊
Your locs look wonderful and full. Very thick, and no build up. Loving the look.
Awesome video - you have to visit my channel to see my locs - Change in Motion Anita Spencer - keep up the good work.
"this shape" is gorgeous! you look amazing
You’re gorgeous! I haven’t started my locs yet, but I’d certainly want this look versus the retwist look!
Your locs look amazing! And I agree that the less you twist the better. I only retwist every 3 months because I prefer the thick full look.
I do this. I understand what you mean about your locs being more fluffy and full. I love the volume of ny hair when I dont retwist for a while. I actually dont like the way my hair looks when freshly washed. Lol
Love this and totally agree! I plan to semi free form, I’m one year loc’d. Thank you for sharing ❤️! Your locs are gorgeous 😍!
when i was about to start my journey in 2020 my girl said should not let it look like a mat (by not retwisting) and i left me under the impression that i must twist regularly, got me paranoid. never again! i could see right quick that it thins out my locs. thank you for this information.
Well my black sista your hair locks look amazing, I also have locks I get mines done every 3 to 4 months.
I like your locs, I'm going to start challenging myself & not retwist my locs
I'll say it again. You have one of the best crown of locs out here! 😍
I love everything you discussed in this video! And of course you're gorgeous sis! For me my husband loves my full hair look right along with me! When it's freshly twisted he has to, ahem, keep his hands out of my hair!🤣
I retwist once a month and will stretch it to 6 weeks.
I normally twist mine once a month but I will try to reduce the frequency. Thanks for sharing.
I’m just preggo and lazy, and I’ve loved my non retwisted locs!! So much volume 💗💗
Yaaas 🔥 VOLUME any day 😍😍
Your locs are gorgeous. They're literally my goals!!! Just started my loc journey on 21.09.19
Love from 🇿🇲
Hey sis, new subbie here!
I was re twisting every month.. but I started to notice my edges.. so I'm now going to slow down on the every month twist. Maybe 2-3 months.
Great video, I totally agree... It's been 6 months since I have retwisted. I despise that scalpy look! Your locs look amazing! 😍
