Beautiful job. This is exactly the car that I would like to build with my kids to teach them wrenching. Sadly it are really hard to find a buildable chassis that someone doesn't want ridiculous money for.
Induction noise sounds better than exhaust noise…..fight me. Thanks for the video Steph, I grew up in my parents 1976 Mazda 121 with a twin dcoe fed 2.1L striker MA motor and the sound in this video took me right back to it. I now own the car and it will be getting restored with my boys to continue the car nerd addiction. Thanks for the content mate and please keep it coming, we love it. 👍
This is really all you need; a neat car with a bit of extra umph and well setup handling. We spend hours on youtube watching reviews and drag tests trying to figure out what the perfect car is for us, when we can make it so simple and not over think and over complicate things.
That motor sounds amazing... brings back memories of driving my 67 Sunbeam Alpine on the Ortega Highway back in '89. Magic stuff. Still have that car...
The sound of that motor reminds me of being 19. I had a 70 candy green Celica lowered with a 18RG. Use to smoke 5.0 Mustangs all the time. So much fun 😆 🤣 😊
I've been doing Angeles Crest in my s2000 for the past 10 years. It's my way to unplug sometimes. Glad to see you're also driving respectfully out there.
I have no idea why you make these videos, but I'm glad you do. I love it when you show the "creation" of the cars and eventually the cool places you drive to.
Love those OG Celicas! Thanks for sharing Stephen! 🎉We have a 2003 Celica GT with 223,000 miles! Still running strong we love it and had it since new and passes smog every year.
Ah yes, in those days Toyota had yet to create their own brand-specific design language. That is, they got inspiration from other OEMs and put them through a shrinker. Like the Celica here; it’s like a 7/8th size 1969 Mustang, especially the fastback version!
Called heel-toe downshifts. I used to drive Angeles Crest in my datsun 1600 roadster in my senior year in high school, 1974. Lotsa runs at night drifting the turns going back down. Way back then there were less people,my friends & I had the road to ourselves.
That's a sweet car. When you first floored it, the sound it made reminded me of how my first Mk2 Escort sounded back in the day.. The twin carb setup i'm sure has something to do with that... Was twin Webers for the Escorts.. I miss those days.. Simple fun.. Great video..
Nice ride, Steph, and a nice video. Thanks! My wife and I really loved a late '70s Corolla four door that we owned from about '79 to '87. I grew up on American iron, and envisioned the Corolla as a miniature Chevy Nova. It was a blast. Miss it a bunch!
I see you upgraded the Ignition! I hope there's another video coming with all the new upgrades since getting the celi running again. been a fan of yours since meeting you at LACR back in the late 90s at one of the Battle of the Imports races.
Beautiful video. Sweet analog car. Can step on the gas a bunch. Blessed with those roads. So humble my dude can't believe people don't freak out seeing you, true legend
Damn Steph!!! After watching this i was in tears seeing ACH 2 and the grunty addictive induction sounds! So much memories up there! Upload more of these weekly or whenever!!!
Life doesnt get much better than a rear drive Celica with flares, Minilites and sidedraughts! Back in the early 90's, I had a Vauxhall Chevette repowered with an 18R-GR and W50, and a JDM RA45 with factory 18R-GEU and W50.
Love the sound of those carbs, my 20r in my 77 just got some put on, still getting them dialed in, can't wait til I can hit some nice twisty roads like his
I drove a 1994 Celica GT for ten years. The Sixth Generation with the round headlights. I love that car. It's amazing how much fun you can have with a little 2.2 liter 5 speed. What it lacked in power it made up in the corners. It handled like it was on rails. It ran for 290K miles before it finally quit. I went out and bought another Toyota although it was never the same. I do have to admit that First Gen Celica is pretty bad assed.
Had a ton of those 22rs pretty tough engines. Had a new 93 22RE truck it just wasnt the same. Metal started getting thin that yr, truck wasnt nearly as rugged either.
I am going to have to add this to my list of "cars to own someday when I win the lotto" lol. Very cool celica, I just love that era's cars. Had me a '70 chevelle, and I should never have sold it.
I used to have a 1973 Celica that looked almost exactly like that. Black with molded fender flares instead of how his was bolted flares. Had the chin spoiler and trunk lid rear wing. Except my Celica had black 14x7 Enkei mesh rims. It had the 20R swap with dual 44 Mikunis, 11.0:1 pistons, a mild cam, and also had a 4.30 rear end. Tokicos all around on unknown springs. Was bouncy as heck on the freeway. Used to take it out through the Berkeley hills in Nor Cal back in the day after work and just drive it like it was a go kart. Only issue was trying to keep up with traffic on 4.30 gears. I remember clocking 4k rpm at 65mph and the 20R isn't a high revving motor. It's made for low to mid end torque, so redline was like 6.5k and at highway speeds I was pushing this motor close to it's redline. But the 18RG was the motor I always wanted and at the time, this was 15+ years ago, I remember seeing a rebuilt one for $1500 and I thought that was too pricey just for the block and head. No carbs, no intake or exhaust manifold. Now these days, if you're even lucky to find one, $1500 is a steal! I was too young, broke, and couldn't keep up with the car and ended up selling it for $3k back then. That I also regretted as the car is worth a lot today
Had a -75 Celica, back in the early -80’s, done up on a rally theme. Was awesome on northern Maine logging roads. One of my biggest regrets is having sold it. Thanks for sharing.
We got those here in AU as the TA22. I had one which looked almost identical, we got the 2T in them and then the JDM engine was the 2TG - these were 1.6 not the 18R 2 litre like what you have. Mine had a 4AGE and T50 swapped in it. Great little car, miss it.
Crappy tv speakers and the induction noise is still so good. Sounds similar to what im hoping i can get my beams to sound like. Thanks for the inspiration
Looks like such a cool ride! I see you went with a modern look overall. I bet that helps keep it under the radar a bit more. Honestly, of all the youtubers I subscribe to - I definitely wish you uploaded more.
The 18R series of engines were almost bullet proof and put in a wide variety of Toyota models but the 18RG with Yamaha heads were reserved for the Celica GT (and possibly others) and didn’t come to Oz as a model but heaps imported and fitted by the tuners
I love these cars. Kind of reminds me of a Camaro in the shape and especially the rear. The 69-70 Prince Skyline is my all-time favorite classic from the era though.
Sup sir...new to your channel. I’m old school est. 71 and any JDMs car from years 70-99..!! Dose are my favorite carbs love the sounds it makes...I had Mikuni 44 on my Nissan Mini truck and Weber 40 on my Toyota Mini..!! You have a beautiful car...I wish my grandpa still had his 72 Toy Cilicia 💯😎🙏🏽❣️
The car is perfect because it isn't. It's not a show car, it's a driver. Man it's so beautiful
Mr. Papadakis has blessed us with another video! When this man talks you just sit down and listen!
a lot of car videos I speed up to 1.5.
Not these. Savoring every moment.
The Toyota celica from the 70's is one of my favorite cars.
You do not need 500hp to enjoy a spirited drive! And there is nothing wrong with listening to an engine at song! Gorgeous car BTW.

When that dohc opens up... Pure symphony ✨
Beautiful job. This is exactly the car that I would like to build with my kids to teach them wrenching. Sadly it are really hard to find a buildable chassis that someone doesn't want ridiculous money for.

Those were the days my friend, we thought they never end
Yess love it when people post their backroad drives with raw sound. Also glad to see this beautiful Celica back on UA-cam.
Sounds perfect
This is really all you need; a neat car with a bit of extra umph and well setup handling. We spend hours on youtube watching reviews and drag tests trying to figure out what the perfect car is for us, when we can make it so simple and not over think and over complicate things.
Yes I agree, also one that will be reliable and easy to work on is also a plus imo.
That intake sound takes me back to the days of my youth and chatting with the guys at TRD when they were in Gardena, CA.
What a joy this was! Thank you for sharing
The sound of dual side draft never gets old. Love the sound!
Seeing the Celica take on the canyons is so awesome!
Also, that 18R-G engine sound is music to my ears. 😊
Scotty approves this message ;)
@@Eduardo_Espinoza You bet! (^_-)v
I've been doing Angeles Crest in my s2000 for the past 10 years. It's my way to unplug sometimes. Glad to see you're also driving respectfully out there.
Lots of lunatics on that road, careful!
If you love real tight switchbacks Mt Baldy rd headed north is awesome...super fun
2 Papa D uploads in quick succession? Another Festivus miracle!
That Celica is making all the right noises and looking the part! Would love to drive that route one day!
I have no idea why you make these videos, but I'm glad you do. I love it when you show the "creation" of the cars and eventually the cool places you drive to.
Glad to see Eric's old car running up and about. As long as I have known Eric I have never seen that car run.... Really glad it's running now
3:54 the washer nozzles look like an owl. What a bad ass car and that rev up… such a beautiful sound.
Love those OG Celicas! Thanks for sharing Stephen! 🎉We have a 2003 Celica GT with 223,000 miles! Still running strong we love it and had it since new and passes smog every year.
@ 5:35 who’s your daddy! 😝
Excellent as ever mr P. And now down draft carbs finally make sense 👍
Car is perfect 👌🏻
Dude I got 1 now. I remember when Joji would talk about this car. It is super cool to see it back to its glory.
Ah yes, in those days Toyota had yet to create their own brand-specific design language. That is, they got inspiration from other OEMs and put them through a shrinker. Like the Celica here; it’s like a 7/8th size 1969 Mustang, especially the fastback version!
The notchbacks have almost like a 1st gen Camaro roofline, but the LB version definitely looks like a '69 Mustang.
There is just something to the sound of the old 2 valve, DOHC fours.
Called heel-toe downshifts. I used to drive Angeles Crest in my datsun 1600 roadster in my senior year in high school, 1974. Lotsa runs at night drifting the turns going back down. Way back then there were less people,my friends & I had the road to ourselves.
Before the 118 existed, man was that a great age to be growing up
That's a sweet car. When you first floored it, the sound it made reminded me of how my first Mk2 Escort sounded back in the day.. The twin carb setup i'm sure has something to do with that... Was twin Webers for the Escorts.. I miss those days.. Simple fun.. Great video..
Beautiful car! I sure miss my 79 Celica.
It was awesome to meet you out at Good Vibes. Thanks for chatting with me about my car (Carrera T) and answering my questions about your car!
God what I wouldn't give to have roads like that.
That Celica sounds beast too. Looks like an absolute blast to drive!
I see you upgraded the Ignition! I hope there's another video coming with all the new upgrades since getting the celi running again. been a fan of yours since meeting you at LACR back in the late 90s at one of the Battle of the Imports races.
Used to run at LACR all the time, Wed, Fri test n tune
Sad its gone nowhere in SoCal to run the 1/4 anymore
1/8 doesnt excite me at all
Well done on the longer bits of video with no talking. This car is achingly beautiful and looks like a lot of fun to drive.
This gives me goosebumps! That nostalgia hits hard. Man vs machine 🤘🏼
Incredible car man! Love to see and hear it!
Awesome to see a new video on that sweet Celica Stephan!
More please.

This Celica is just so gorgeous, looks and sounds excellent 👌
Love the sound of those carbs, my 20r in my 77 just got some put on, still getting them dialed in, can't wait til I can hit some nice twisty roads like his
I love classic, low powered cars like these. You can drive them hard and they'll respond nicely
That thing just looks good from all angles
Lucky you. Back in the 70’s I would take my 66’ Mustang up to Newcomb’s Ranch, good to see young folks still enjoying the ride.
dang I wish I could shift that smooth all the time! What a G!
What a tune! The sound AND the performance.
I drove a 1994 Celica GT for ten years. The Sixth Generation with the round headlights. I love that car. It's amazing how much fun you can have with a little 2.2 liter 5 speed. Best sound was the drive away at the end of the video. Amazing
What an amazing car and trip, thank you so much for taking us along!
This is so beautiful. That motor sounds so good
steph dropping panties with his window trick
It sounds great.
Thank you for sharing, I used to be very involved with those engines. Than I got into Sti and evos, now I just watch
My first car was a 79 Celica GT. I absolutely loved that car & would love to have one again… maybe someday.
Love to hear the Noise of a proper car!.. thanks for the video.. ❤
Beautiful car, respect from Australia
This is a great example of how sometimes you don't need the fastest or cleanest ride to have the fun factor hitting an 11 out of 10.
Such a sweet car. Makes all the right sounds, checks all the right boxes
what a good looking Celica! Love the fact that its "used" and not mint in paint etc. epiq! :)
I fell in love with this boy style celica in high school great looking car still today
Every enthusiast needs an old classic to compliment their big power car. Mine is a classic mini and a70 supra! Always a car for any mood and condition
I am going to have to add this to my list of "cars to own someday when I win the lotto" lol.
Very cool celica, I just love that era's cars. Had me a '70 chevelle, and I should never have sold it.
Listen paps, we need you to start making videos again. It’s been 9 months. Thanks
What a beautiful Celica.
Missing Old School Toyota's. Love The Sound Of Twin Side Carbs.
Sounds great for a 4 popper! Must be the trumpets and carbs setup. NICE! Also, hilarious to see Stephan show the girl how her windows work. lol
What a glorious sounding and looking machine! Thanks for sharing
sounds awesome! gets me excited to drive mine for the first time!
Sweet sound of raw power & no car nannies when the driver was in full control thanks for sharing
I used to have a 1973 Celica that looked almost exactly like that. Black with molded fender flares instead of how his was bolted flares. Had the chin spoiler and trunk lid rear wing. 20r was pretty reliable but light on power for sure. 22r & 5 spd a popular upgrade

Wow a '72 with a built 18RG. Definitely one of the coolest things I've seen in a while!
Such a good looking car. Thanks for taking us along!
Thank you so much! Hello from belarus
Of all your cars Mr.Papadakis this is my favorite❤
could listen to this all day!
That sounds so much better than the fake sounds that come out of modern sporty cvars these days.
Fake engine sounds are so lame when you think about it..
Always waiting for more videos from you I don't mind the wait because your videos are always fantastic.
Crappy tv speakers and the induction noise is still so good. Sounds similar to what im hoping i can get my beams to sound like. Thanks for the inspiration
Another exceptional episode!
Very much enjoying this this video. Love the car. Keep pushing the envelope Steph!
Awesome video thanks for sharing!
OMG those engines are so hard to come by. AMazing
Coming from another Celica owner, this car is everything I wish mine was. Thing is awesome.
Don't let your dreams be memes
Damn, that Celica looks and sounds awesome.
music to my ears. Can't wait for my '73 celica st to get on par like this to do canyon drives
Looks like such a cool ride! I see you went with a modern look overall. I bet that helps keep it under the radar a bit more.

Kind of reminds me of a Camaro in the shape and especially the rear.
The 69-70 Prince Skyline is my all-time favorite classic from the era though.
I got a 1996 Celica with a 2.0 Engine, imported from Japan. It was in an abandoned condition. Now it looks like a new car. It my weekend drive.
Nothing beats the sound of a healthy engine with webers
Great video, and your car sounds great too.
What a great day for a drive, didn't seem like much traffic for LA.
Sup sir...new to your channel. I’m old school est. 71 and any JDMs car from years 70-99..!! Remember the mini truck craze it was huge
My first car, never forgotten!
*A bona fide **_classic_** from the Land of the Rising Sun . . .* Aso deska!
