    Just catching up on your brilliant videos sir (ageing modelling newcomer) and your instinct about the camouflage was correct. The Air Ministry 1939-45 decided that the the dark earth and dark green colours should merge rather than have rigid definition.

    Its really nice to hear the sound of an airbrush actually being used, so many modeller silence or play music obscuring the sound of the brush and especially the compressor... Which is one factor I have to take into account when I think about going from being a pure brush using modeller (nearly all my life) to an airbrush in my dotage.

    Like your techniques with the marbling. The dark earth was darker than your mix, yours has turned out like the mid stone of the desert camo, the green looks right. I believe that the aircraft were painted dark earth over all and then an A or B camo pattern of the green was painted on depending on the aircraft serial number being odd or even last digit, this being done in the factory before delivery. I have also heard that large rubber mats were used as masks. Look forward to the finish.

    I am making the same kit right now, and had the same idea as you; trying to get tonal variation on the bottom. But I did not black-base the bottom, I primed it with white. Then I marbled and shaded with XF-78 Wooden Deck Tan. I then built up the XF-21 as you did. I am thrilled with the result! Looks very much like photos I've seen of how that color discolors. :-)

    Painting tip: The Dark Earth paint should be applied first then Dark Green. The D Earth colour was probably more accurate with the khaki mixed in.

      they are my favourite. I have tried Tamiya and Mr. Hobby for decals, but micro sol remains my favourite. But I am running out of it and for some inexplicable reason they don't ship to Singapore :( but I will find a way to lay my hands on some soon :)

    Please explain why you do marbling, is it important ? hoping you will answer me.

    • @scalemodellingmadness4114
      @scalemodellingmadness4114  5 років тому +5

      Hi Kairasp, marbling is one of the options available to you as a modeller. The objective of marbling is to provide, what many consider, a more natural looking paint finish. If you look at pictures of aircraft, particularly those that have seen some active duty or long term field deployment, you will find that because of nature, the paint on these aircraft, and even land and sea vehicles for that matter, starts to show sings of age. It can be rain, dust, constant usage or even exposure to the sun, that results in the paint becoming old. This is true for even old cars, let alone military vehicles. But this fading of the paint, is not even. And that is the idea behind marbling. To try and reproduce a paint job that is weathered in the same way as nature would weather a surface.
      Does every kit need marbling. No.
      Whether you should marble your kit or not, is completely dependant on the subject you have chosen. A brand new aircraft out of the factory would have a pristine coat of paint, a 1944 Me 109 that has been in service for a couple of years, would presumably, have a much more weathered look.
      So, pick a subject you like and see what kind of effect works best to achieve the look you are after. Marbling is one of the tools in your arsenal that you can turn to if the subject requires it.
      Hope that helps. :)
      Oh yes...almost forgot...go to Doogs' Models on you tube. he has done an extensive series on black basing, same as marbling. His videos will give you a more clear understanding of what the technique can do and what are its limitations.

    PLEASE what gloss varnish do you use? I'm using Humbrol clear, it's 3 years old and I'm wondering if it's leaving white patches.

  • @juliansamurai

    I'm very new to model making! What is the purpose of marbling?

    • @scalemodellingmadness4114
      @scalemodellingmadness4114  3 роки тому +1

      Marbling is a technique which is used to give tonal variation to the paint job and break up the monotony of a flat uniform coat of paint. When paint is applied over the marbling it appears to be patchy and weather worn, which suits certain aircraft. So, instead of having one flat colour, by marbling, you get a more varied effect :)

    Looks great. I was almost done with mine but the wash somehow messed the paint underneath up and the thing was ruined. I used humbrol enamel paints and humbrol gloss clear coat. What clear cote do you use to prep the model for decals/weathering?

    • @scalemodellingmadness4114
      @scalemodellingmadness4114  3 роки тому

      I usually use one of the two, either Future polish (which I am out of and can't get any) or Tamiya clear X-22.

    Hi there, I haven't built kits for years, and never with an airbrush (just ordered). Can I ask why a dark base/undercoat (the modelling shop recommended a light grey), and why the marbelling - on the videos at least I cannot see what that has done, thanks

    • @scalemodellingmadness4114
      @scalemodellingmadness4114  4 роки тому +1

      HI Colin, thanks for watching. So, the colour of the base is usually chosen depending on the final finish that you want. A grey primer will give you a neutral base, best suited for a pristine model (fresh out of the factory look) or panel line pre-shading. The easiest way to explain a black base is that it gives you shadows by default and subsequent layers of paint decide how much of these shadows you want to remove. Marbling, is another type of pre-shading effect that gives a sort of subtle mottled variation to the paint job. Most modellers like to decide what effect to go with, depending on the final look they are trying to achieve. If you are making your first kit with an airbrush, I would suggest that you focus on a grey primer, or even go without one (just clean the plastic nicely with alcohol or warm soap water) before painting. Focus on getting comfortable with the airbrush and learn about how to dilute paint, which paints you like, etc. All the shading effects can wait till you are more comfortable with your new tools. Hope that helps :) Good luck
