@@ApriliaRSV4F it’s not boring, I built this model and I had a lot of fun. If you want a big and a crap ton of parts models, go with academy. But don’t expect everything to fit as well as TAMIYA.

    Dear Santa:
    Please.
    Thanks!
Another great build and review at the same time. As per the hard line vs softlines on the camo you can be right either way. For every picture of a Spit (or Hurricane) with soft demarcation lines you can find one with hard lines.
Thanks to your channel, I also have the Meng Panther on the way too. Love how casual your channel is and informative at the same time.

This is the sort of quality that we should be expecting from Airfix .... it’s a shame they don’t set the bar quite high enough. Shows you don’t need reams of plastic and resin. Lovely work and nice and accurate. Price seems a little high, but I suppose that the photo-etch and extras make it more than worthwhile.

The way the RAF painted the camouflage on their aircraft was by laying large soft rubber matting on the aircraft in the shape of the camouflage patterns. It gave fairly crisp lines and it was easy to do. Masking them off with paper and tape wouldn’t have been feasible, large rubber matting worked just fine and the matting was just pulled off the airplane when the painting was done. I saw a photograph of brand new Mosquitos lined up and the camouflage pattern was exactly the same on every one of them. As for you just getting really fine lines with your airbrush, it looks terrific just like everything else you do so masking it off wasn’t necessary.

20:19 Andy, the early Spitfires were painted using masks. In real life, the separation line (the fuszzy transition ) was about half an inch wide. In scale 1/48 that fuzzy line would therefor be about 1/96th of an inch wide....... Impossible to do, even with the smallest airbrush !
That means, that on this model, in this scale, a hard line is the most authentic rendering.
I also noticed Tamiya made a mistake. Again..... They put a crow bar in the little hatch. It's not supposed to be there. The Mark V was the first one to have one on board.
And please....NEVER paint the crow bar red..!!! That did not become compulsory until early 1949.....!!! Most of the time they were cockpit green. Sometimes bare metal and occasionally matt black.
But the bottom line is : nice build, Andy !! Looks great.

Most squadrons did carry the underwing roundels in 1940, but some didn't. The Opration Dynamo version (the real plane recently restored, - see 'Guy Martin's Spitfire') also had no underwing roundels, & one wing black, one sky, like the 1939 schemes but this was dropped soon after Dunkirk. On a clear day, the Luftwaffe must have spotted them miles a way, definitely not ideal for the clear skies in summer 1940! 😵

Those are Ailerons, not "flaps". The British did use masks, actually rubber mats they laid over the plane. Really only needs exhaust and gun smoke stains, and I think you were going for a clean bird anyway. Nice job!

Nice job so far. One small point. Tamiya Sky Xf22 is NOT he same as RAF Sky type s. To get the proper tone and hue you should mix Xf22 with Xf1 flat white in 1 : 1.5 ratio. Ie 1 part Sky to 1 1/2 parts of flat white. Tamiya Sky is too dark and green otherwise.

As you say this looks a superb kit, so I'll have to get one. The fit of the parts is amazing. I think the Spitfire is a good model to do an open canopy because it also has a small door on the left fuselage side so a lot of the cockpit detail should be visible. It would be great if someone did a resin engine kit for it too.

Hi Andy, I'm only just rejoining the modeling ranks as a novice despite my age and so I am catching up with the experts videos. I have this kit but since I am trying to bring an airfix "Spit" that I ruined to some degree of splendour, I won't touch the Tamiya until I'm more confident. However regarding your thoughts on the camouflage detailing, the British Air Ministry code 1939 - 45 stated that the edges should merge and not form a rigid line. So you you were quite right to do it "your way". Fantastic result, sir.

  • @luciussander8217
    @luciussander8217 3 роки тому

IMO this is not a great kit. The fit of the larger parts is great, but... the engine cover is one piece on the actual aircraft, so not only do you have to remove the seam line that's formed when closing the two fuselage halves, but there's also a piece that fits in front behind the prop - why Tamiya? So, you'll need to remove the seam where that joins the fuselage as well. If you don't build option B, the instructions don't tell you to fill the hole left in front of the fuel cap... and nowhere in the instructions does it tell you about opening up a hole for the clear part that goes behind the antenna mast. You only realise that when you are right at the end of the build. Then there's the bullet proof glass in front of the canopy - which doesn't sit flush to the fuselage, as it does in the real aircraft. Finally, the decals are terrible - way too thick. I used aftermarket decals on my build. Oh, the Tamiya canopy mask? Bin that, get an Eduard sheet. Talking of which, the Eduard Profipack Spitfires are way better than this kit. I really don't know how Tamiya made so many errors with this kit and failed to spot them, allowing it to go into production. Considering this is one of their newer kits, it really is quite shocking. People might think these are small things, but combined, they ruin what should be a great kit. I was really surprised that very few people publishing reviews or posting build videos are not highlighting these issues or is it they get the kits for free and don't want to shame Tamiya? I'd still buy the kit, but knowing where the issues are before you build it would be a much better starting point. I've only seen one review where the guy called out all these faults with this kit. I hope this helps anyone who has yet to start this kit. I'd like to think Tamiya correct the problems for the next production run of this kit... note that on Andy's build, he hasn't filled the hole in front of the fuel cap and has not fitted the clear part behind the antenna mast, he also fitted the etch part for the compass incorrectly. He did a great job though, don't get me wrong on that score - let's be honest, how often does a build go 100% perfect? Not often!

Sliding canopy sides look almost flat here - a failing of most Spitfire kits due to necessary compromises of injection molding. Original canopies were blown as a bubble and thus bulged heavily at the sides. See ua-cam.com/video/Q2qv-Z-bgGc/v-deo.html (at 1:10) to see how far! A heat-shrunk scratch-built canopy might be worth a try.

Legend has it that Andy has over 1,000 unused figures in his spares box ;-)

There are two contradictory points to remember about weathering, the ground crews were proud of 'their' aeroplane, and wanted to keep her clean when she went out flirting with Messershmitts, and conversely, the aeroplanes generally didn't last long enough to get really weathered and chipped!

Please stop premising things with a gender? We all know makeup and hairspray are advertised at females but it isn't only used by them!

Don’t fill the join line on the leading edge this is natural to the aircraft . Rescribe the join if you need to . Silver wheel wells is also authentic.

Why did the two holes need to be drilled at the start in the fuselage? I'm starting this model and can't see in the instructions how or why they need to be drilled...

Is clear coat necessary on the bottom before wash is applied? Or is it just used for the top?

Do you sell the metallic pigment stuff you were using to age the markings?
