Two Years Alone in the Wilderness | Escape the City to Build Off Grid Log Cabin

- #logcabin #bushcraft #offgrid #survival
One man leaves the city life behind to build a cheap off grid log cabin and homestead in the Canadian wilderness, including a log home, an outdoor kitchen, an outhouse, a woodshed and a sauna bathhouse. Building mostly with hand tools, Shawn James harvests building materials from the forests north of Toronto, Canada and crafts them into functional tools and shelters using traditional woodworking tools and methods. He practices bushcraft and survival skills every day, including fire starting, tree identification and harvesting, wild edible foraging, fishing, hunting, camping in the summer and winter, travelling by canoe and snowshoe, navigation and water collection and purification.
Continue watching in 2019 as Shawn finishes the sauna, plants a forest garden for fruit and vegetables, builds an underground root cellar, ice house and cheese cave, a timber frame workshop and a remote hunt camp closer to fish and game.

After a stressful day I play this video and it helps me fall asleep. Not because it’s boring or uninteresting, it’s because it’s peaceful and beautiful. I know you didn’t make the video intended as a sleeping aid but it works great for me. Beautiful scenery, self reliance, good craftsmanship all combined to relax me enough to forget my troubles. Thanks

At approx 1:11:50 when the soft song starts to play I realized what this entire video is a analogy of, LIFE
I’m laying in bed approx 4 years after I lost my 16 year old boy to a fast 5 weeks of cancer. Tired with a loss of why I’m here now I try to keep my mind busy so I won’t weep any more. A heart can only break so hard. I’m 55 and had a heck of a life but I’m tired now and don’t really want to keep going. My boy was the best boy a father could ever hope for and I cannot believe he is gone and with him went my heart
Life is a riddle, a strange thing to experience once you get really deep into it
This man did what so many dream and want to do
My son and I built a shack in the woods together. Nothing compared to this guy but we experienced much of the same thing. Hard work, perseverance, patience, pacing oneself, hope, vision and best of all peace of being there. For me having my boy there made it as close to heaven as this old earth could ever be. Love is what makes it Yet with love comes pain
Hat off too you sir and appreciate you sharing your experience. The timely addition of the music painted a great picture sadly so many today have never and will never taste. Brought back good memories
Life is a strange thing
Robert Stalets that's a helluva tough story ......I'm very sorry for your loss the arbitrariness of life is shattering.... I send you my best wishes
Sorry for your loss brother. Hope you can find peace.

I appreciate your concern but was very troubled and offended you would preach to me after what I shared.
I shared what I did in a knee jerk reaction to difficult grief in my life , late at night after being stirred to memories me and my boy shared from watching this video
Grief is not a sign or signal for you to jump and try to convert someone Don’t you know that Jesus rebuked the church of that day for doing and acting the same way ?
Your reply to me that my heart is a heart of stone and I need the Holy Spirit and conviction of my sins ??!!
Are you serious ?
Let me explain something to you even though I maybe should be bigger and just let God deal with you
I have been a Christian for 35 years with a much stronger testimony then yours.
What makes you think I need saving ? Because I spoke out my grief ? Because I said I didn’t know what my purpose is now ? I’m not a perfect man by any stretch as neither are you and yes I’m still in grief as I loved my boy with all my heart
My hope of seeing my boy again is the hope I hold onto and the kind of real faith that’s required to live through this.
I’m sorry but people like you give the Lord a bad name.
Jesus said don’t tell people you love Him SHOW them.
If He gave you a new heart then I suggest you use your heart to respond to people not a drive to tell people how to get saved. Jesus said it is the Love of God that draws men NOT judgment. You passed judgment and expect anyone to respond ? It will never ever happen.
You put that religious reply on here for the world to see as a representative of Jesus Christ and your word is I have a hard heart and need to repent ?
It would of been completely different if you would of used a scripture to comfort or encourage Then if I wasn’t a Christian believing man maybe I would think about it or contemplate it But to jump right into someone tell them how bad you were then how good you are and tell someone their heart is hard when all they are doing is grieving is, well, uncalled for and out of place
Jn 5:39. You search the Scriptures because you think that in them you have eternal life; and yet scripture points towards me
Please don’t respond as will only make it worse.
Don’t represent yourself as a Christian unless you do so with the love of God in your heart. Then from the abundance of the heart the mouth will speak what God wants Otherwise the Bible says your a sounding gong
Inspired by Dick Proenneke- Alone in the Wilderness. He was there for 30 years. You have a modern spin on your build. Carving the wooden spoon just really carried on the tradition of Dick Proenneke . Ah cool!

Hi everybody. This video is essentially a movie of my life over the last two years from the first day of spring two years ago to the first day of spring yesterday. This is a video I've wanted to make since I started building the homestead - my evolution from a sheet metal worker turned corporate executive then to whatever it is I am today. It was fun and interesting to edit this video, especially since it's a lot of content and a lot of changes condensed into a relatively short hour and a half. This is my journal. If you enjoyed this, my weekly videos include over one hundred more hours of cabin life and wilderness living so please subscribe so you don't miss anything. This year will be more interesting as I continue learning to live closer to the land. There are ALOT of questions and assumptions from new viewers about how I film/edit/upload, if I replant trees, who the 2nd dog belonged to, etc. You will find all the answers in my previous videos. I have uploaded a video every week detailing the entire process over the past two years. Thank you to all of you who have been following my journey from the start and welcome those of you who are new here.
All of it! Great work

Escaping to the woods off the grid has a calming effect on me. I am retired, worked hard for 48 years, and now have the time and a decent income to occasionally find real solitude outside away from the noise of traffic and lights. It’s not that I do not enjoy others because I do, but being alone in the woods provides an alternate healthy perspective. However I must admit, this gentleman is much more resourceful than me. I cheat a bit and have solar panels that charge a couple deep cell 12 volt batteries for me that I use mainly for led lighting inside.
Repent and believe the gospel, you must be born again to inherit the kingdom of God.

A couple years ago I went camping and it ended up with me staying in my tent for 2 years now. I live off-grid, not to the extent of this guy but I live in my tent in the mountains all alone. I am close to a big city and food shopping is not too far away from me. I took a job working from home and I love it. Being out in the mountains for 2 years now it has helped me through all the pain I endured. It is crazy how close I am t a city but still so far away. I will never live any other way again. Some times its really hard and money is always tight cause I work on commission but the peace I have found inside of me is priceless.
GOD bless you Sean
God bless you - yes.
👏👏🙌
Sorry about your loss sir. Wish You the best on your journey, hope You will find happiness.
Amazing. Lost my 21 year old son in 2001 - 10 days before 911 and his mom died in a car accident when he was only eight. Never went to live off the grid but did go off grid in other ways still recovering. Some positive things - like connected with a beautiful women who I knew in my twenties. She said yes 4 years ago. Live in the mountain's and hope to never live in a city again. Power to you Brother. Hope all is well and you thrive in your heart and Soul.

الأسطورة في عالم البناء ❤
This was for me way more entertaining than the last 10 Hollywood blockbusters combined.
I think Bob Ross painted this guy into existence. Maybe there’s a little cabin here. Oh right by this big ol’ tree. It’s your world. You make the rules.
Charles Ross 😢
Charles Ross wait, are you related to the late great Bob Ross?
Hahahaha!!
We need more men like this. Love the skills and what he accomplished. That's a beautiful home and he did that .
The dog, it's quite a partner.
Massive amount of respect for men who walk into the wilderness and not survive but thrive.
Sadly we do not have such wilderness here in The Netherlands and the nature we do have we are not allowed to set up camp unless you get permission.
Iam 40 years old, working 12 hours a day and at the end of each month after paying all my bills and bullshait not much is left.
Looking at this man makes me dream of leaving the modern world with my wife and dog and kids to live the life.
But i cant even do that as our kids cannot live without wifi, smartphones and pizza.
it would make it a living hell and a failed journey.
I envy you sir, being such a splendid craftsman and just leaving the city behind.
I watched every second of it and you made me smile all the way.
Godspeed and may life grant you much luck and happiness and merry xmass.
Greetings from The Netherlands.
As a fellow dutchman, I felt that.
Edit: Vrolijk kerstfeest.
Phe rocks - I feel the same I couldn’t have said it any better myself, I have tons of respect and admiration for this man, I love how he keeps coming up with ideas to improve the inside of the cabin and he accomplished it all on his own with true skill and dedication , and when he goes out in the wilderness with his dog it looks like heaven on earth, just man and mans best friend, when I was scrolling through the UA-cam videos and stumbled upon this video I looked directly at the thumbnail without reading it and right off the back I thought it was a video of the Hatfields and McCoys, on the thumbnail he looks exactly like Kevin Costner when he starred in the movie Hatfields and McCoys
Get a divorce leave the kids wife Wi-Fi and pizza and run like hell lol just kidding but it is a thought of mine everyday hahahah
Maar ook echt.
Trust me, as a 16 year old boy I can 100% say that your kids would thank you for this. Sadly it´s just not possible in mainland Europe, only places I could think of where this could be possible are Sweden,Finnland, Russia or Norway. This is the dream.
Most chill UA-camr ever I can literally sit back have a few drinks and watch his videos for hours and now my lady sits with me and enjoys watching them as well 🏕
Old lady? 🤨
Old lady??
Yeah my wife
That’s better. 🙂
This was so enjoyable to watch. It is better than all the other off grid living shows by far! This should be on the big screen in theaters. On top of all that, James is good shape! 😁 People don’t need to spend a lot of money on diet fads and gym fees when you do what he does. 🥰

Best video on UA-cam. The best medicine for anxiety.
I like this video better than those guys building pools in the jungle
LOL
That's fine sir. keep your thoughts to yourself

Who needs fake Hollywood. Shawn, you’re the real deal. Great job and keep living the dream!
I want to say this correctly I haven't seen good video like this since I was a child and I saw the movie Jeremiah Johnson. By the way one of my favorite. But here we have an award-winning video in my opinion A man truly determined and too stubborn to quit. You are the master of the outside my friend
Absolutly amazing. Fantastique!
Desmond Brady, Jeremiah Johnson is one my favorite movies, too. Saw it at the drive-in with my family when I was young. Another good movie is The Trap with Oliver Reed.
Loved Jeremiah Johnson with Robert Redford, about a mountain man, but missing from the movie was builds like Shawn makes.
This is my Soap Opera, I can't get enough. I keep coming back for more simply genius.
Yes, Jeremiah Johnson is one of my favorites too. But this amazing film was not done on a big budget.
I find this to be such a great lifetime achievement and goal to fulfill in one's life!!
For real for real,
How many people in this world can say,
"I build a real blockhouse in the woods, with nothing but my own bare hands and a few tools"
I salute you !
Much Love and Light to you Sir and much more Respect for living your Dream!
(obviously) 🥰
Yvi a lovely rewarding comment.
The constant noise and bustle of cities is not my thing. I love the quiet quality of nature. Solitude is such a beautiful thing.
I'm also trying to do something in nature
This is better than any Hollywood movie I have seen this year. By far. Well done on something very special!
Great job, everything was perfect .alot of people would say alot of work,i think he enjoyed every evening savoring over tomorrows plan.
Hollywood movie??? Hahahahahahaha!! This is real . . . Hollywood is not.
I can't stop thinking about how happy his dog is.
did you see the second dog once hmmm who else is there??
@@brendaspooner9518 me, it was a slightly whiter one.
I wouldn't mind trading places with that dog at this moment .
He has a well trained human.
Cletus Spuckler, Stable Jeanius Where can I get one of them ?
That damn dog has the life. He’s always has a smile
This man must be an architect ? The precise mesurment, the drawings and to know how to handle wood is absolutely amazing. We can only dream ever to do something like this. He is indeed a true master in his field.I admire him very much.Surely he is a husband and a father. Is it an escape from something?
Architects are not craftsman. Most cannot handle a hammer😊
958 people disliked this? Sad mfkers... brilliant craftsmanship. Well done Sir.
Laziness can't hide itself .....
958 women / blue pill asshats liked this .. HUGE difference
im a woman and gave it a big thumbs up! @@chadharrod5246
Well said
nevermind the uhaul trailer, the plastic kayak, plastic roof layer, plastic sled, the glass windows, the plastic floor coating, the metal stove, the metal heat pipe, OR EVEN THE CHRISTMAS LIGHTS IN HIS LOFT!, but dude used a homemade broom while sweeping next to a $15 walmart camping chair!! I think most of the dislikes are from the fact that this isn't off the grid, it more building the best log cabin you can with the money you have.
Not to disparage the incredible things the author has done, but it's not why I came looking for survival tips.
when someone asks me why "simple" doesn't mean "easy" I show them this video.
Yea, but is living the normal modern life, especially in a city, actually "easier" than this? This is physically challenging and requires learning practical skills which are directly used for one's own survival and comforts. Modern life is working all day, every day making massive amounts of money for someone else while you get paid just enough to keep you crawling back for more until you're nearly 70 when you can get a pension (if you're still alive or haven't gone insane). Constant stresses about fitting in with everyone else's ideas of how you should be and what you should be doing, constant stress about paying the bills or becoming homeless, sharks everywhere trying to take all your money, depression, anxiety, inability to understand life in general and a fundamental psychological disconnect with reality and nature.
It's easy for relatively very few people, mostly just very lucky people. For the vast majority of people modern life is constant stress, agony, worry and delusion leading to endless psychological problems. Personally, I'd much rather spend my days cutting logs, learning practical skills and building my own house. I also feel it's much harder to get up at the crack of dawn every single day to go to work for some corrupt business that's ultimately destroying the world and get home late in the evening just for the so-called "easy" privilege of then going out shopping. I'd much rather wake up in my own time in the morning and go fishing or gathering etc before carrying on with real constructive work that benefits me and not a bunch of CEOs and gangsters.
@@AD-kv9kj crazy. You spoke out of my heart with every word you wrote! :O it's as if I wrote the text myself!!
Where are you from, my friend?
Greetings from Germany!
@@Yetipfote Haha. From the UK, mate. I feel this sort of thing is really deep in the heart of every human being - but most of the time it is almost utterly lost under the endless conditioning of modern life. I don't necessarily think that everything to do with modern technology and society is wrong or bad, but that we've just taken it all too far, too fast and most of us have no clue about real life. I think people are capable of balancing nature and modern technology far better than we are doing, but we're getting so deeply lost in nonsense that it seems almost impossible for society to ever be able to take a step back and do the right thing. The corrupt money-spinning machine benefits small select powerful groups so much, and the internet is now the world's greatest tool for propaganda and social conditioning the world has ever seen. However, life moves in mysterious ways and it seems that humanity throughout history has been hell-bent on always learning the hard way. Perhaps after another century or two and after a great many huge disasters people will begin to wise up more and start learning to use all this high technology properly, rather than for endless distraction, self-delusion and political propaganda. And on that happy note, all the best to you and happy holidays! Peace.
@@AD-kv9kj I really enjoy reading your stuff m8 :)
Because I agree to everything what you are saying!
A coach I know said that he assumes, that he doesn't believe in Christianity's concept of hell but this live on earth might already be hell. I see it differently: hell or heaven don't come after life but they are the two options what we make of our lives. And I believe that we walk the way to heaven when we accept ownership of everything in our world.
Out of curiosity, how old are you? I'm almost 30.

Is rare that you stumble across a video of this caliber which makes UA-cam a good place to be. This is one of them.
The amount of time spent to make this video (editing etc) omg wow. Thank you so much for sharing. A Pure joy to watch.
Agreed with you
