  • Geometric design is one of the most recognizable aspects of Islamic visual culture. In a lecture titled “Discovering Islamic Geometric Design,” Eric Broug, artist, author, and founder of London’s School of Islamic Geometric Design, will explore the enormous richness of this design heritage and provide a deeper understanding of how these patterns were created and how we can do more than just recognize them.
This lecture and workshops are made possible by the Ismaili Council for the Southeastern USA, the social governing body of the Ismaili community in the southeastern region, who are committed to supporting educational outreach initiatives that raise awareness and understanding of Islam and the historical contributions of Muslims to society.

Was just talking today about the difference in techniques of gardening in Japan VS. England....and how looking into them helps one to understand the mindset of the culture. Of course, the same is true with the "common" style of art found in a certain culture. This style of typical Islamic art, that uses these patterns I was fortunate enough to have encountered when I was 14 and traveling around Southern Spain. I also traveled to Morocco and Tunisia. I remember being just hypnotized by the beauty. After only a few weeks, the ubiquitous designs began to filter down into my dreams. Islamic geometric art is stunning. I get the feeling and by default some of the beauty, complexity, repetition, deepness, and intelligence found in the culture.

One of the rare times I watch an entire video that is more than 30 minutes. That's not very entertaining but very interesting indeed! Good work, good work.

I saw a 3 part TV programme on UK BBC4 about the Silk Road. I can't remember the presenter but I seem to remember him saying that the intricate geometric patterns were to honour Mohammed as it was against their belief/religion to represent him as an idol or human image.
