I was gifted a base 2wd slash almost 10 years ago and wasy first "hobby grade" rc car. I still have that car and not a single thing is left stock. Its now an lcg brushless monster beetle with wide rustler arms and lots of other upgrades over the 10 years. Its my favorite basher!
I love my 2wd Slashes .. one is now 10 years old .. there the rigs I run the most, I have many other vehicles from other brands. At the end of the day.... this hobby is all about what makes you smile the most .. and for me that is my Slashes :)
I still have my slash VXL 4x4 that I picked up in 2017 and its still going strong... It came with the LCG (low Center gravity) chassis, TSM (Traxxas stability management), and the onboard audio with V8 sound...haven't seen those options anymore on the new slashes
It’s always interesting to see reviews of more mainstream stuff like this. There’s a reason they’re so popular… I recently bought an Associated SC10 Pro4. I raced it at the last RC Kicks meet, and it’s brilliant. I upgraded the servo, because that was terrible, but the truck was £289 from Modelsport, so about £320 including the fast servo. It’s a 3300kV brushless 550 motor and *very* quick. In a straight line it’s the same speed as my 10.5T XRay buggy! Similar to the brushless 4x4 Slash, but significantly cheaper and no proprietary battery tech to mess about with. The Slash does look better though - Traxxas are king when it comes to paint jobs.
Ill save everyone some time. Get the Traxxas Rally. Comes with the LCG chassis already, and the Rally is literally a lowered Slash. If you want you can always convert it to a Slash with a small part count. Get the metal shock caps immediately. Then you can start upgrading, when your bank account comes back from the ER. The Slash/Rally can take the upgraded diffs from the E Revo V2 that the Ultimate comes with. Its cheaper to get the Ultimate straight up with all the fruit, but if you're financially challenged, you can pick and choose what you want to upgrade over time, and some of the upgrades on the Ultimate you don't need straight away. And it allows you to cherry pick, what you are throwing your money at, and how often. Also GT shocks for a better handling Slash/Rally. Big bores for bashing. The Slayer is based on Revo platform.
I really like the Slash I have the budget 2wd and race it locally in a spec class. Tons of fun for a very reasonable price. Thanks for doing this series!
I have had 17 traxxas trucks, slashes, stampedes, bandits, you name it. And NONE of them have ever held up like the vxl 4x4 Ultimate. It may cost like 800 canadian.. ( plus i had about 300 in beef upgrades ) but after jumping it off jumps at the skate park for days.. off of a 2 story house multiple times, hydro planing and sinking it into a lake, and running it into a wall at 50 mph and it still drove good. I could not believe how much it took and just kept going. The ONLY time i ever broke it was in -30c it broke a stock control arm when i ran it into my car, and when i landed on power with paddle tires and a fully charged 6000 3s it twisted the stub shaft right off on one corner. Like i said other than that whiskey throttle and car slam was great
I started RC in 1984 with a grasshopper followed by a Kyosho Salute and then a Cat Xls. Went back to it in 2008 with a Hot Bodies Cyclone D4... for about a year. However, it was the Traxxas Slash which brought me back to the hobby for good. I now have 4 Slashes and dozens of vintage RCs (I blame RC Kicks for that ;-) I think The Slash might be overpriced but it deserves a special place in the History of RC cars (The content on Dude Perfect is worth mentioning btw). Thank you Gavin for your amazing RC content.
one thing I will give traxxas, I love that they've gone all in on user serviceability. I know that's common in RC but god damn if their stuff ain't easy to work on. I recently picked up a ruined summit for $100 and I got it up and running for like, $100 and an hours time.
The Spec Slash racing class has been very popular at our local track. Basically pull it out of box and go racing. The Slayer 4x4 is based on the nitro Revo platform with inboard suspension and shorter arms. There is also the Drag Slash which is a 2wd LCG with the 272R trans setup up for on road Drag Racing.
My ultimate is about 5 years old and also came with a center diff in the box. So for racing you could switch it out with the slipper clutch. Real shame they do not add this anymore. Only thing to add is an esc fan.
Our local club (not large) has 20 or so spec slashes at most races. So much fun. The ultimate is a truly nice RC. I’ve driven them and VXL with the LCG Chassis added and I’ll take the ultimate. I think compared to alternatives - the ultimate is about 15% too expensive compared to competition. In America at local shops the slash 2wd with LED’s is $220. Ultimate is $499. We have four of the slash platinums which were pretty much the same thing as the ultimate only had to supply a radio system and paint the body. We've had them for probably 8 years and they have been beaten unmerciful And has had very good luck and hardly have had any breakages And although I think Traxxas can be a douchey company they do make good stuff. The shocks on these I found to be great never an issue with them and work very smoothly. And I love how Traxxas actually makes decent battery hold down systems I hate when companies just throw a Velcro strap in a car and say good enough.
I have a Slash 4x4 that I bought years ago as a rolling chassis. I happened to have a VXL combo sitting around that I put in it. I think was an Ultimate edition from about ten years ago. It’s been a great truck and really showed me what Traxxas was all about. Pricy but fast, durable, easy and accessible fun. It’s a great truck. I wouldn’t say the are for racing, if you want to race short course there are better chassis out there, like Associated etc. Oh, if taking it over a lot of jumps, or racing it, you’ll want to put holes in the body as they tend to parachute a bit.
I race my Slash Ultimate, at my local club. Changed the wheels and tyres, put a pickup body shell on it, in General Lee colours ( See profile picture ) i found it very capable against Lossi TLRs, harder work to drive than the TLR SCT but lots of fun.

glad to see this one.. the slash is probably the rc10 of modern times. our club races the spec slash it would be the cheapest one you have there 12t titan and all.. only allowed to use your radio, traxxas metal shock caps, rpm rear carries and the rpm camber blocks up front. all the upgrades are only for longevity, last year we had over 30 at our slash event, and at regular club events we have a solid showing. the point of running them is it is a very affordable way to get people involved in the club level racing on a very simple platform. now with that being said, we as club racers using what we get in the box due a few things to make them preform better. if you run through the comments you will see that the slash is just a base platform, even some of the parts from the bandit fit it, Traxxas has most of its entry level stuff able to swap parts, that makes it nice when the shop carries basically all the parts so repairs dont require an order and waiting time.

I really don’t get why folks splash out soooo much for a 1/10 Slash. I’ve spent under £190 getting mine new in rtr form and then upgraded it to brushless a year later…and it still came under £250 lol (amazon and eBay are a great for those wanting to have rc fun but not spend loads especially when starting out in rc) appreciated mine’s a 2wd, but still works just fine and now had it for about 4 soon to be 5 years lol. I’m just shocked how expensive a brushed 2wd now is? Since when did it get sooo pricey?!!! Also, all these spin-offs seem to be just money making ideas. Thing is there are people out there with more money than sense….even with all the access to information thanks to UA-cam and online forums.
@@RCKickschannel £265 for entry level 🤯🤯🤯 glad I got mine when I did now hahahaha....seems just like a dealer keeping his addict hooked and waiting....you're doing the same to us with the next installment lol Good things come to those who wait and all that 🤣👍😎
Honestly, you really can't compare the Slash & Slash 4x4, as they are two completely different vehicles, based on entirely different platforms. The 2WD Slash is very similar to...and, basically, shares the same essential platform, with...the Bandit buggy, and 2WD Rustler. The Slash 4x4, on the other hand, shares similarities/platform with the Rustler 4x4 & Rally. Other then that, the usual great video. 🤙🏼
38mph? The box claims 60mph….? I guess it’s dependent on various things, but it being the most expensive “ultimate” edition, you’d think it would be able to do so as it comes in the box…
I think my GPS was wrong as it zoomed. I didn’t have time to film it again or mess about. Kevin got 60 mph out of his stock with the speed pinion from the kit so 100% it can do it. You have to remove the body mind as it starts parachuting at 50+
Bashing short course trucks haven't really changed. The team associated sc10 pro comp 4x4 (released prior to 2014 when I bought it) . If you looked at that and the Traxxas Slash 4x4 vxl or the platinum ultimate basically the same... I did buy a Traxxas Slash platinum ultimate but as a secondhand roller.. (mainly because of parts access long term wise) . Other brands tend to delete vehicles. . I put a Hobbywing brushless combo in it . I also bought a Traxxas Slash body (clear so I could paint it myself) .. Can i say if the Traxxas is better than the team associated I'm unable to say as I haven't barrel rolled the Traxxas enough... I did install a dust/dirt/rock etc cover .. the fine dust will still get thru..
Peope call overpriced, he got the premium package with all the hop hups and , trust me, if u start upgrading the standard 4x4 vxl u will get in that price range soon
It would be interesting to know how many sales have been lost due to some of the things Traxxas has done thats put off potential customers? I honestly don’t know if it’s loads or almost none. That aside some of the products are fantastic like the TRX4 Sport, XMAXX and Slash.
It does feel like that I know, but if you take say a average Tamiya kit, £200, brushless motor and ESC £100, bearings £35, transmitter and receiver £50, servo, £35, paint, £10, you end up with £430 before you add any upgrades. You can easy get a Slash for that and not an entry level one. Granted it might not look as scale or detailed but you can beat on it with way less issues. Now yes, this is comparing apples and oranges really but personally it’s more down to our psychological dynamic. Stumping up one big lump of cash, always feels way more painful than loads of smaller purchases. Add that dynamic to you being able to purchase more smaller items independently, you get the fun feeling of purchasing more new things and that feels not only less expensive, but way more fun. Well, it feels that way to me when I look back on my Racing Cougar and what I have dumped into that buggy. So taking just the figures into account, RTR kits are basically the same. The only caveat to that would be if you purchase the RTR and instantly start swapping out parts and upgrading it. Then you are removing new parts that you paid for and spending even more replacing them. Then a roller or kit is a better way to go for sure. What do you all think, totality wrong observation or…?
@@RCKickschannel Tamiya Sand Viper $175 (includes motor, esc, bearings, oil dampers), Spektrum RC SLT3 3-Channel SLT Surface Radio w/SLR300 Receiver $65, Futaba S3003 Standard Servo $13. Traxxas is way too expensive for what you get.
@@alphawlff You can’t compare a Tamiya Sand Viper against this Ultimate Slash. Really it’s more the entry level Slash and that’s $199. Also take the two bashing and you will be picking up the Tamiya with a dustpan and brush.
@@RCKickschannel Why not? You said.. but if you take say a average Tamiya kit. And the Tamiya Sand Viper is an average kit. Or if you want swap it out with a TT02B Plasma Edge II $135 then. And when you add bearings $20 to that it is still cheaper.

The 2WD basic Slash is £265. This is the top of the range 4x4 brushless Slash. The next video is all about the entry level version. :)
@@RCKickschannel £265 for entry level 🤯🤯🤯 glad I got mine when I did now hahahaha....seems just like a dealer keeping his addict hooked and waiting....you're doing the same to us with the next installment lol
Good things come to those who wait and all that 🤣👍😎
Honestly, you really can't compare the Slash & Slash 4x4, as they are two completely different vehicles, based on entirely different platforms.
Don't get me wrong, I like the Slash (I have 2wd VXL), but no way would I pay $600 for that lol.
You have to remove the body mind as it starts parachuting at 50+
Nice.
Slash is what i sell the most no question
Understandable, its really good. I want to fit the new 2WD upgraded chassis to my 2WD Slash soon
Hahaha. Slash Stoner edition. Smoking accessories included. 😂😂🤣
It’s Smoking good😂😂
Thats good they send a pipe because U definitely have to be smoking stuff to pay some of Traxxas prices😂
😂
Same price as the v2 maxx, or a 6s arrma 😅
Peope call overpriced, he got the premium package with all the hop hups and , trust me, if u start upgrading the standard 4x4 vxl u will get in that price range soon
Ya know what's funny, or odd? In 2009 when I got my slash it was....$199
Prices have rocketed on everything these days, especially in the UK.
Wow , lucky i live in usa. Charge you $60 to send it across the pond.
lol :)
buying Traxxas is like going to the dark side.
It would be interesting to know how many sales have been lost due to some of the things Traxxas has done thats put off potential customers? I honestly don’t know if it’s loads or almost none. That aside some of the products are fantastic like the TRX4 Sport, XMAXX and Slash.
Traxxas is way too expensive for what you get. It's crazy 🤦♂️
It's a 2s Truck, on 3S the stock electronics overheats in less than 15min in 70 degree ambient temps. P.O.S. I say don't buy, my biggest RC regret.
I’ve never had an issue but it’s only 70 degrees in the UK once a year max 🇬🇧 😜
Plastic caps on the aluminium shocks is were traxxas wants it to break so you have to buy parts the plastic adjustable spring washer...eeewww horrible
I saw that on the box said 60+mph.funny that i got with my Tamya 103 brushed 90 kph and i goyt get 100
The Slash Ultima will do 60 with the included pinion as long as you take the body off lol. Kevin got 60 with his.
Really good video but it just has to be the ugliest RC car ever created. I just want to gouge my eyes out with a spoon when i see a slash.... Love the channel keep it up!
Really, I actually like the look myself. I like all the colours and options availability. I’ve been looking at some aftermarket truck bodies for it and I’ve found a few I really like
If you’re spending that sort of money on an rc you would be better off buying the Arrma Mojave ! Significantly better and not much more money. Not sure why anyone would buy the traxxas 🤷♂️
That is a good comment. The Arrma Mojave v2 BLX is 6S and 1/7th. In the UK you are only looking at £67.00 more vs the Traxxas Slash Ultimate.
Not worth the money for a traxxas. And not a fan of that brand. I can think of much higher end and capable tracks for $500usd, and they’re not a step above toy grade like traxxas
I wish they didn't look so much like kids toys, the body is horrendous as well as the wheels.
Copying Kevin Talbot? I'm not following him anymore, tired of seeing him laughing at destroying expansive RC cars i'll never have the money for!
I do not think it worth the money.
TRAXXAS is over priced and sue happy. Not my cup of tea.
This, plus all the Traxxas specific gear you’ll have to get unless you’re willing to change out the stock electronics for your own…
@@Sponge1310 Thanks for adding. I forgot about that. Very true. They went to court on that so that's why TRX connector for batteries are very hard to find. Plus the no balance lipo Battery thing with their Chargers
Have you ever driven one?
Thats why the are at the top. That said, I haven't bought a traxxas in 15 years
Stick with tekno
I'm so sick of those Traxxas controllers so boring and ugly
i made the mistake of buying one of those a couple years ago...plastic kids toy that breaks nonstop and sucks money out of your pocket..total pos
