I have had both over the years, I have the zorro now it's a great platform. The ftx is cheaper in money but not in quality. The traxxas is a amazing platform if you have the money for it and upgrades.
I think you hit the nail on the head at the end, both are great vehicles BUT they are totally different price points so aimed at different sectors of the market. One of the biggest issues with the Traxxas is those stupid proprietary battery connectors, what a stupid idea! A lot of the FTX parts are the same across multiple cars in their range, spares prices are dirt cheap, and they're readily available. Personally I'd go for the Zorro, but each to their own. Great video though👍
I got a Zorro brushless as a roller, direct from CML for £100, and dropped a cheap Surpass Hobby brushless system into it (4500kv), and it's a rocket ship. I've run it for over a year, and nothing has broken from the extra power. I love the Zorro platform, but would be more interested to see the Apache up again that, than the Slash. I don't have the kind of money to drop £600 on a car, and the smiles per £ with pretty much all the FTX cars, far outweigh some of the opposition. They're not perfect, and the electronics can be a bit weak, especially their brushed motors, but everything is so cheap to fix. I'm also interested to see if the Apache shell would fit on the Zorro. It's much more aggressive. 👍🏻
Definitely would love you to put the Apache on the list. I am seriously looking at it at the moment and like your in-depth pro and cons that you did with the Zorro and slash.
A must for the Zorro is a dust cover, when I had mine something broke every time I took it out. So was sold after a few weeks, personally I`d go for an Arrma Senton.
The alloy chassis is a big help as it doesn't have sides so everything that gets in, falls back out vs the plastic chassis design. I'm not 100% on the alloy chassis for full on bashers but for doing what I did in the video, it's perfectly fine. I guess it comes down to how hard you bash. The 4x4 Arrma Senton is £347 so it should be much better for 40% more money.
This is an excellent comparison review. One thing I don't think you mentioned was the ease with which you can work on the Slash. With the removal of three or four screws you can easily remove the back end or front end and have access to the diffs. In the U.S. parts availability would be a question falling in favor of the Slash.
Yes the Slash is super easy to work on, but the Zorro is about the same, if not fractionally worse. I can't say about FTX parts in the US so can you have a Google and see if you can find parts for the Zorro? Let me know :)
Ill always maintain you get the Slash, upgrade it as you break it or the pounds are there to spend on it. Plus the customization is there, RPM coloured parts or the coloured Traxxas replacements. Suspension and tyres transform the performance, and then toughen up your drive line if you want to bash it.
Glad to see the cars running as a way to finish off the video. Personally ,if it were my money being spent, I'd take the Zorro over either of the two Slash vehicles discussed.
Awesome video and great running footage! I’d be interested in seeing how the Apache compares and also how it stacks up against the Zorro! Not sure if the Apache has a centre diff but has lovely LEDs I understand
Really good video. No hype or click bait, just an objective review. I've had the first iteration of the Zorro and fitted a cheap banggood brushless system to it. It was great value and immense fun. I'd be really interested in seeing the Apache. I'm keen to get another SC truck and was looking at the associated rival sc10 pro 4.
It's incredibly hard to justify the cost of a Traxxas RC.! They're really no better than some of the competition, worse even... I recently got a Slash Raptor & fitted a mild brushless system... The driveshaft snapped on the SECOND PACK.! I've fitted the "Extreme Heavy Duty" (😂) ones that cost me £28!!! (with p&p) & they seem to be holding up so far. I'll say this... It does drive really well.! And it looks gorgeous.!
The most important takeaway from the video is, the Zorro pushes like crazy. The Ultimate tucks her nose in, and goes to work. In terms of driving experience, the Ultimate is the far superior truck. Gear up a couple teeth on the spur, and that will counter the Zorro's speed advantage.
Hi Gav you need to try the Apache , it’s a step up over the zorro. Better materials used, better design all round great performance and bang for your buck Much closer to the ultimate slash quality wise . I’d pick the ftx personally out of the Apache and the Ult slash. Be good to see what you make of it
The Apache is a newer design, the Zorro brushed/Carnage platform is maybe 15+years old. The brushless Zorro uses most of the standard Carnage/Zorro Brushed parts, everything in the centre is different though.
I wish FTX products were readily available in the US. The brushless Zorro has all the features and price I'm looking for, but I have no idea where I could buy one or it's parts...
I have the Traxxas 4 x 4 Slash VXL and I can attest to its durability. I have also race it [stock] against the likes of Losi and Associated, except for my bad driving it could held its own against the expensive raced specs brands. You just need to "tame" it when turning as it has a high CG. But on straights and especially jumps, wow.
That’s great to hear. The more time I spend with the Slash the more I can see why it was such a big hit all these years. For me I like 2WD so I’m thinking of getting myself the Slash 272R to keep
@@RCKickschannel , I also bought a 2WD SCT by PR RACING [PRSC201] as a racer. The Slash is now a "Monster Slash" with bigger tires and metal parts. As per experience a 2WD is much harder to drive than a 4WD, anyway have fun with yours.
what an excellent indepth review. Would love the Traxxas but have FTX money, so Zorro it is, and I have tons of FTX stuff that will bolt on. Great video 👍🍺🇬🇧
I got the arrma senton boost and upgraded it to 4wd 3s 0.1 mod. Once i sold the bits i didnt use total cost was £260. Prices are already skyrocketing only a couple of months later. The senton boost was £179 but now £209 and the 4wd upgrade was £35 but now £57. Crazy inflation.
I'd like to see 2 good drivers race these on a nice track with the same tires and power - gearing to make it even, I think the Zorro would do very well being it has a center diff and the Slash doesn't. I've personally never owned either so I could be wrong but I would think if you adjust the center diff you should be able to put the power down coming out of the corners etc a little better than the Slash! 🤔
My friend and I race our 4x4 Slashs against each other and we haven't broken much in 3 years despite some really heavy crashes. I'm still running the standard driveshafts with no breakages. A really durable platform.
All manufacturers need to focus on achieving this. So many have shockingly low amounts of replacement parts in circulation. It’s not quite as abundant in the UK but a few clicks online and it’s on your doorstep in a few days.
Bang for buck it has to be the Zorro all day long! Apache is basically a Rokatan with SC truck body shell and enjoys higher ground clearance for a modest GBP30 or so more and will be on the heels of the Slash and Senton even harder …..
My Zorro has been upgraded with all of the optional parts plus the servo out of my DR8 and a DumboRC transmitter & receiver. Excellent car but I acquired a new Arrma Senton that I upgraded to 4S, so the Zorro gets less use than it deserves.
Cheers Gav, great comparison 👍 I was looking at the Apache when it first came out but not sure about the quality.. looks quite sturdy... But had a carnage which broke a lot.. and don't want to buy something which needs repairing or upgrading to be tough 😕 do like the short course platforms though 😃 like the looks of the associated sc10 pro4 but spares are probably a lot easier to come by on a senton.. if you could blag a full compliment of 3s ready short course trucks for the next UA-camrs race that would be very helpful 🤔
one thing that was kinda mentioned but not its full value is..... every Traxxas store or hobby shop has every part to totally rebuild the slash.. no waiting on parts walk in walk out to repair it.

@RCKicks Correct. Geared to the same ratio including wheel diameter and pushing the same mass(within reason), the traxxas motor would be faster.
