  • This is a 3-hour bullet chess tournament, Chess960 Titled Arena, I provided commentary on while specifically observing World Chess Champion Magnus Carlsen compete. Time controls are 2 minutes with a 1 second increment. This was the 2nd titled arena lichess held with the variant chess960, or fischer random chess. It's played just like regular chess with the only difference being that the pieces on ranks 1 and 8 have been randomized. I livestreamed this event at twitch.tv/ChessNetwork. The Chess960 Titled Arena is held for titled chess players only, namely Grandmasters, International Masters, FIDE Masters, National Masters etc... Magnus Carlsen played under the account "DrNykterstein". This was the 13th "Titled Arena" held by lichess.org. Its $1,500 prize pool goes to the top 5 players, with 1st - $1000, 2nd - $250, 3rd - $125, 4th - $75, and 5th - $50. This tournament was played on March 27th, 2019.
    I'm a self-taught National Master in chess out of Pennsylvania, USA who was introduced to the game by my father in 1988 at the age of 8. That 2 knights game was something else. Down a queen for about 20 moves against a GM and yet never seemed to be on the back foot, the eventual win was based on tactics but he got there with pure positional play. Most of us, in a bullet game, would play for tricks: throw long-term strategy out the window in a wild attack to try to flag the opponent or fluster them into walking into a fork. But Magnus just doggedly plays his way out of it, sidestepping every threat, running circles round this poor defenseless grandmaster. I don't think there's anybody in the history of chess who's as resilient, as slippery, as hard to beat as Magnus, and his bullet/blitz games take it to a whole new level.

      You sum it up very well, but I'll never buy the history of chess resilience, resistant, bullet thing. You get to know that carlsen is that good because of internet. It sounds stupid but imagine lichess arena existed at the time of fischer, kasparov etc. you'd also be fascinated.

    • @dm9910
      @dm9910 5 років тому +20

      @@nicolasjeannet790 We'll never know, but while I'm not saying he's better than those two, I think his particular style and ability to play from behind make him harder to nail down, not just in blitz/bullet but in classical too. To beat Magnus at classical chess you not only have to catch him making a mistake, but you then have to follow up with another 20 precise moves or he'll equalise in a heartbeat.

    For us novices, I've found that playing a game back at .25x speed (which mutes the volume) with pauses at key moments, is really instructional.
    Us low to mid 1000's players can't see the logical moves as quickly as these masters, so give yourself as much time as you need to think (without help from Jerry's amazing commentary). Even if it takes you 10+ minutes to decide move #4, there's no shame in that.
    Then play the same game back at full speed and volume to learn from your mistakes, while taking careful note of how Jerry's analysis. Trust me, this *will* make you a better player. It's made me a much better just watching a couple games a day after work with this method.

Not sure. wonderful calling by Jerry, it takes me about 30 seconds to work out what the 960 arrangement leaves en prise.

Iis it bad for a professional chessplayer to play for free except for Magnus, who is the only one who can afford that? Whateve,r it would be 1000 % better if Nakamura would also play and more funny with Aronian :( I am a dreamer^^

    When Jerry is accurately describing the thoughts of the World Champion and laughing his ass off in the process, that makes for good entertainment value. Not only is it massively insightful and almost like voodoo magic, but it makes me think that Jerry could actually go for a GM title if he wanted it bad enough. On that note, it seems like he is a humble sort of guy who doesn't chase accolades, why else would he spend so much time being such a fantastic educator? Oh... Am I gushing? Well, shit, but this man deserves it.

    Just in case you are interested Jerry, in the unofficial 960 world championship an idea for an alternative to "kingside" and "queenside" was "(H)omeside" for kingside and "(A)wayside" for queenside where the first letter tells you the actual side of the board we are talking about. Comes from the TV series "Home and Away".

    Please enlighten us with your commentary about the latest games from Carlsen in Samkir!
    I was really fascinated by them and thought: now we just need Jerry's videos.
    Do it for humanity :)

    I love how Jerry can call out his own mistakes as he commentaries these games. Love seeing how he'll get baffled one sec by the world champ and thinks hes making a bad play only to see in a few movies that carlsen still has his brain on

    Great game 1:16:33 very unusual opening and development by Carlsen 1...h4 pressuring white to do likewise. Incredible attack by Carlsen amazing white survived as long as they did.
