- Everyone has been asking for the low light camera battle so here is the Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra vs iPhone 11 Pro Max vs Pixel 4 XL comparison. The Galaxy S20 Ultra Camera with 108MP sensor and 8K video have been a big deal but Galaxy S20 Ultra vs Pixel 4XL has been something I haven't done yet so I wanted to do that in this Camera Test Comparison. It would be good if you would have talked about the ultra wides. Here the Ultra would have easily won also considering the iPhone doesn't have a night mode here and the Pixel does not have an ultra wide.

Chloe Eng Big iPhone fan here but I have to be honest this was one of the first things I noticed! It does the best out of the three. You can still here a bit of the background on the iPhone but the pixel is kind of awful.

Pixel 4xl makes pleasing pics while Samsung does well with light bulbs sometimes and iPhone does well in some shots
I feel when the update to the S20 ulta happens, it will be unbeatable. Usually samsungs first camera update changes everything.

Rennie Ash that’s definitely it. Actually I’m even impressed at how well the Ultra Wide behaved there, because I can safely say that the software is absolutely crap. And I say that as an 11 Pro owner who feels forced to shoot in raw every time I need to shoot in UW and the lighting condition isn’t optimal

I just switched from an all Samsung ecosystem to my first IPhone, the 11 pro Max. I don’t own anything else Apple but... this phone. The pictures!The video! I’m more than happy. I think the Pixel 4XL does great in low light/Night mode.
The Pro max comes close, the Ultra tends to be flashy if we're being honest.
I prefer to images on the pixel 4 aswell but that might just be a biased opinion because I'm a pixel user

stephen brader It most likely won't be better for videos as the hardware pixel binning also works for video as far as I know. So the 0.8 micrometer argument is wrong as far as I know. It's the noise reduction algorithm.

Surely they could set there noise reduction to a higher level and right now they choose not to preserve more detail and sharpness and not go too soft however surely theres a better middle ground it looks like almost no noise reduction

If I want night mode I would gladly take dark night photo cos that's natural... What's the purpose of nightmode without brightening the image and showing us what we couldn't see.

Great video combining my two favorite things... tech and Disney! Overall all three phones did great. I'm really liking the ultra camera except the yellowing in the night shots and the grainy night video. Pixel does the white balance better, the iPhone does video the best and Ultra has the most detail. They all have their strengths
I agree with everything you just said. There's no point fighting because they all have something good and bad about them.
I went to Disney springs not to long ago with my 4Xl. I understand this was all in auto mode but the dual exposure controls go a long way to making the shots better.
I feel you. It’s like Pro Mode on the Galaxy Devices. I can’t fairly compare cameras with different modes because that’s impossible. Once again all this is preference too because some people actually like overexposed/brighter images.
I tried the Pixel 4 in a store. The shadows slider is really nice indeed, but they haven't done it right. When I want bright shadows, the shadows need to have less noise. So they should choose a longer exposure time than 1/100s in average light conditions. But they don't adjust the exposure time, so the shadows can look terrible. Using Night Sight leads to slightly better shadows, but isn't very satisfying as Night Sight takes too long and often leads to slightly blurry photos.
Furthermore the small 24mm² sensor (and small focal length + image circle) as well as Google's choice to combine solely exposures with the same exposure time (or analog amplification) contribute to bad shadows at base Iso (when you expose for the highlights).
Danny Winget It's not impossible. You can compare the best pro/auto mode result of the S20 with the best auto mode result of the Pixel 4

Yes as a Pixel fanboy I'm just kind of sad tbh😂 I can't claim it's the best smartphone camera anymore :( but kudos to the competitors, they've done really well. Despite that im still satisfied with pictures from my Pixel 2 and it still impresses me everytime. Love it.

Pixel doesn't have the same halo effect around the blue like the S20 does, it's almost identical to iPhone but it's a bit cooler - Pixel does a better job in this area.
The red on the 'Street food' part on the S20 doesn't even feel like red, Pixel has a nicer deep red but a bit blurry around the edges while iPhone does the best in here.

Apple does great with their temporal noise reduction during video capture, they take an approach similar to post process noise reduction in some video editors. For a given ISO, the camera software automatically monitors a number of frames looking for regions where it can isolate the noise across those frames, thus ensuring that it is only picking out the noise, then in real time creating a noise reduction profile. It is more computationally expensive, but it does far better than the traditional approach of characterizing a batch of sensors and creating a universal noise profile for the line of sensors. (which for some reason is still more often done on android devices).
Since temporal noise reduction only needs a few frames when ISO changes, you will only see a split second of more noise before things clean up, and that can be done before recording starts.
While it cannot match true post processing noise reduction where you have the benefit of knowing what the next frame is, thus further optimizing things, it is the best method currently available, and far exceeds all other methods when it comes to real time noise reduction.
From a hardware standpoint, there is no reason why it can't be done on higher end Android devices.

The 11 Pro really is the best package overall. The Ultra has great sharpness but the blown highlights and blurry video are trash.

Samsung has the best sensor but the software is not on par yet. iPhone produces the most natural looking photos and videos here. The nighttime shots shoudn't look like it's daytime because it's looking just bad and fake af.

you are right, if samsung would keep the with a lower brightest it could have a sharper image that takes less time to be taken and also be looking more natural.Something between night mode and normal mode would be perfect.
@@amo_res9266 no its up to the user. Samsumg let's you tweak how much you want to 'bright up' the image so you get the best of both worlds.
Samsung let's you chose between more natural looking photos or more color popping / bright photos.
Even with the 4XL at hand, I keep carrying the DSLR for photos. Still a huge difference, especially when using RAW and the right lenses, but amazing how phones went so much better over the years. Millions of people don't need anything else.
Samsung only needs to tweak the occasional over-exposure, those halos and red color this. Its a little bit noisy sometimes. Pixel has incredible dynamic range control and color reproduction. iPhone is pretty much on par with the pixel however, the iPhone has superb video no matter in which lighting you film.
They are releasing a firmware update once the S20 is released.
It just need a software update and then it will just performs nice😁

Were these made with Tri-pod? One thing I've always been very surprised about is the Pixel's handling of hand movement compensation, where others would smear, Pixel algorithm generates a decently sharp photo.
The iPhone gets every shot nearly perfect. It is consistent. I am no iSheep.
It crushes blacks in night mode and flattens details in the floorboards, also the shop he showed was overexposed on iphone couldn't even see inside the store. Wouldn't call that perfect bud.
@@Jason-ut3ou Yup. You're right buddy. But I was talking about how consistent the iPhone's resulting images are. Almost all photos had very nice photos whereas the samsung and Google had a few photos which were missing out in certain aspects.
@@Sai_on_youtube the samsung is also brand new and has a software update for its camera coming soon, plus all photos can be tweaked on Samsung with pro mode it's a fantastic camera, and goes to show with a few software tweaks will be amazing. Which imo is a small reason why the phone will be great. The OS itself is the biggest reason to own a a droid imo. Coming from a previous iphone user Android has come a long way.

The sharpness of the s20u does it for me. I am a pixel peeper andso always zooming into things. I was just more drawn to the images from the S20U. iPhone has the best colour balance but I can live with the colour reproduction of the S20U. S20u though has issues with focusing and noise in video especially at night. Samsung needs to use binning for video as well. They can improve the focusing in lowlight but for the noise they'll need to use the same solution employed for stills. Samsung's definitely raised the bar on sharpness and details. For a 1st gen unit, it's not a bad at all. Itll improve with updates and by the time we get to the s21u we might see dual.pixel auto focus make a comeback to this 108mp sensor. Not a fan of night modes so kudos to Danny for including a lot of regular shots. Indeed I preferred the regular shots a lot of the time. The ipjone had the most realistic night mode shots because it uses the shortest exposure. Something the others need to take note of. They need to cap it at a 3 seconds exposure. It's impractical day to day otherwise.
It might be worth looking at some images from the S20U close-up, because I own an S10 and whilst on the face of it images can look sharp, when you pixel-peep there's a lot of smeary image processing going on, and actually a lot of detail is lost. I would be surprised if Samsung have completely turned around with their image processing when it comes down to it but I'm also happy to be wrong.

S20 camera is going to improve within next updates so its kind of early to make comparisons
Ultra is the selfie King, for all those that care about such things! I do not use my front camera apart from Face-ID so not really important from my POV.
Obviously, with the better hardware, the Ultra has the best zoom, though for up to about x5 all phones are usable, past that and it is only for info gathering rather than for posting.
The rest, I prefer the iPhone, far more realistic, the Ultra was blowing out all light sources and focus were dodgy on many photos. I am surprised as I thought that the Ultra, being 6-months newer would have better software, as you would expect! The Pixel was the leader but others have caught up, though still okay. The P30 Pro would probably win in low-light TBH. Hopefully, the upcoming update will sort the Ultra camera out as I have been very disappointed so far, and though the hardware has great potential, we need to see if Samsung has the software prowess to make use of it. For instance, the 8k video is pretty irritating.
We await the update, but ATM the iPhone remains the camera King.

Most people don’t have time for Pro mode if they are trying to capture a moment with their kids etc. This is why I don’t use it for these tests. It also has to do with someone behind the phone that understands how a camera works. Most of the general public has no idea what ISO and shutter speed is.
Danny Winget i think S20 ultra isn't for most people. You can tap the screen and pull down the exposure to match the iPhone's exposure to test noise n details.

To me the Iphone seems to have the best photo's in all modes. Granted the other camera's excel in different pics but my humble opinion the Iphone beats both of them and I am not a Apple fan boy...just calling balls and strikes.

Night mode on ultra is good and i dnt think it need any major improvement but yes the night time video os the worst it softens the whole content and that noisy stuff need to get rid of asap.

Ive seen this with every samsung phone comparison, if you want more detail and a darker image TURN THE BRIGHTNESS DOWN in VIDEO and IMAGES please you tap on the screen once and theres a slider right there!
You can do that with every phone. Pushing the exposure down will just crush the shadows to produce deeper blacks. That won’t help the noise on the non crushed areas.
Oh interesting to know, but why don't you do a similar comparison between the cameras like that? See which one has the better details and colour, because in a few of the shots one of the phones had a brighter sky or something, how would they look if they were at the same level, would be very interesting to see since it seems like I've seen no camera comparisons like it.

Can you please use the 10s exposure time with the iPhone when ever it lets you as the s20 uses it. Yeah it is automatically 3s but if the samsung is making you wait for 10s you should let the other phones do the same. The exposure time is the key thing when it comes to low light pictures and I can tell that 10s exposure on the iPhone produces like 3x better pictures.

As an S10 user there is no diff between S10 and S20 series beside that 108 mp. The video looks good on both iphone, pixel and samsung coming last.

Sonic ppl who spent 1400$ probably spent them blindly so it wouldn’t matter to them. Also as you can see the S20 doesn’t have a bad camera AT ALL. Yes, it has a very disappointing dynamic range in daytime, but with a quick view in every comment session you’ll see none is bothered by it, should it be because of bias towards Samsung or against Apple. 🤷🏻♂️
Yeah the s20 ultra is a mixed bag. Kinda disappointing. Hopefully they fix it in the next update. It's a shame the iPhone lacks certain features (no micro SD expansion, OS limitations) cos otherwise I'd buy it.
For me, the iPhone looks the most natural in most shots. I'd give it the clear win here (and I say that as a Samsung user).

Chill haters , I have the Iphone Pro 11 256 and a Xperia 1 in some cases the Xperia 1 excelss my iphone (picture quality ) Iphone 4 k video and stabilization is near perfect . Xperia 1 cinema pro is something special/ amazing love the color profiles and the manual focus ! The Xperia 1 pictures are somehow mor close to reality ...

In my opinion the s20 ultra performed the best for night pictures, but I wonder wich one looks the most natural in day light. Because I prefer natural over most colourful.

I agree with this. A good night mode for me replicates the ability of high-end cameras to pull out a moody scene that resembles what your eyes are seeing - with inky blacks and very little noise or smeariness. It's not about turning a dark scene into the inside of a casino.

I peeped that too, or when Samsung produces the brighter/clearer nightmode shot all of a sudden it's unrealistic because it looks like daytime which is the whole point of night mode.

I agree with you there bud! It's because the iPhone people say "oh you could add this or that when you edit." And I'm like well then what's the point? Any picture from any phone could turn out amazing AFTER you edit. The point is to see which camera is better via point and shoot. I am a Pixel owner and I'm impressed that Samsung has upped their camera game. But I still think for camera photos it's Pixel vs iPhone and then everyone else
