Completely agree with your thoughts on the over-abundance and instant gratification mindset. A missionary friend said when they came to the US one time, and her youngest was about five, they went to the supermarket - the child looked around at the abundance and said, "It would be easy to forget God here." WOW! Talk about wisdom at a young age!

I live in Europe, in a small town appartment. So nothing like homesteading ;)
I dont really do a no spend month but since I followed a lot of channels who do do that I did take away some things that may help some others as well.
Every couple of months I go through my pantry and other storages and document on a list all the things that I bought and forgot about or didnt like that much or just went to the back of the cupboard and needs using up.
I also make an entire inventory list of my freezer because I tend to forget about whats in there.
WIth that list I make a couple of dinners using all those things up.
It usually ends up being about 5 or 6 meals every other month or so, I see them as "Free meals" since the money is long spend and forgotten about LOL
It still helps, and if for nothing else, it helps waste less food!

Yes, great advice! I do this too. Everything in my pantry is dated and inventoried. I try to replace items used in the week, month or however my budget allows. So items never go near the best by dates. I have converted many things over to home preservation in my pantry, but not everything I can produce here.
Again, great comment! Happy New Year! God bless!

Others could look at this challenge as a way to prevent having to throw away food that's gone bad. Many people do this challenge in conjunction with inventory and pantry clean out. Americans statistically Throw away 40% of their food each year, maybe we can do better and in turn this will save you money.

I really feel what you said about the fear of using the food. This is why I have always frowned on pantry challenges. I am now at the point in my pantry journey where I NEED to get through that fear and use the food. I must get over that!

Old comment, but I'm the same. I have such a hard time eating my home canned food! But we're starting a pantry challenge here today -- I only found this channel this week! But we are moving this year and I don't want to move food - again - that we aren't using. And I need to set up my next kitchen to be more useful. We will be able to garden over there much easier (not this year) so I want to set everything up to encourage a healthy, self sufficient lifestyle.

I like the idea of thinking of the pantry challenge as a rest period. Rather than depriving yourself, you are rewarding yourself for all the work you did over the summer to can and freeze all this food by actually using it.

As an older grandma, former homesteader, homeschooler and gardener, I would say many kids in our society are spoiled with all the fattening snacks and meals bought in restaurants with little to no attention given to nutritive value. Yes, some kids will have a fit when they don't get what they want foodwise but as parents, it's a valuable exercise to look yourself square in the mirror and realize WE are the ones who allowed them to develop these bad habits in the first place. I think this pantry challenge is an EXCELLENT way to bring us all back to reality, the same way some families have beans and rice one or two nights per week as a means to remember that not everyone in the world is having pizza, tacos and spaghetti every night as we, rich Americans often do! My hat is off to anyone attempting to do this challenge, whether you homestead or not. Most likely, nobody will suffer or go to bed hungry. There will just be a renewed appreciation for the food that is set on the table before us!

Well said! My husband and I moved here to Salem Missouri to be closer to our kids and grandchildren and to escape California lol and I've noticed with a couple of my granddaughters that they are extremely spoiled in general but especially when it comes to what they eat. It saddens me to know that in these days of uncertainty that these kids would have a very difficult time adjusting to eating what they normally wouldn't. I feel the future will get worse so I'm really trying my best to prepare, preserve and prosper not just ourselves but for our children and grandchildren. Missouri Wrightchk

You don't have to jump off the deep end either. Make one night a week Taco (Mexican) night, then after a couple of months, have taco/burgers. Cut out fast food, and stay home to cook.

I absolutely agree with what you are saying! We raised our kids to eat from a menu I created, not the restaurant or fast food joint. I was always creative, but never wasteful. I lived, and still do, by the saying my own mother raised me and my siblings by..."Waste not, want not!"

Such wise, wise words. And the Spirit spoke to me about the fear part. My hubby is wanting to start using what I canned, and I've wanted to hold on to it because I know times are going to get really rough in 2022. But God does provide for us, and He's been providing abundantly, so I need to let go and start using what I've put away. I can easily replace what we use right now.

I've been wanting to do this for several years. This year I'm going to make it work for me. I'm a retired grandma living alone. I have no garden or canned foods. I've decided to allow myself to buy eggs and produce only for the challenge. I don't eat dairy or bread, so don't need to replenish those things. I have plenty of meat in my freezer and canned goods in my pantry. I'm really excited and thank you so much for your inspiration. I love watching your channel. I've shared this video on Facebook and have told my friends about my pantry challenge. I hope some of them join me.

I started your pantry challenge on the first of January and it is now the 9th and it doesn’t even look like I’ve been using anything. I just wanted you to know that your words really touched me and made me think differently about using my home canned food. I kept thinking in my mind to not run out of food rather than eat the food I have canned so that it doesn’t go bad because God willing you will be able to grow a garden and do it all over again. Thank you!

I will be participating in the challenge but sort of with totally different rules over the last couple years due to let's say the tragic death of my husband and half of our income being gone and things like that and just getting back into the swing of things I always kept a large pantry. I thank the Lord for that after my husband died I think we lived on it practically for seven or eight months with minor additions. It did teach me where my pantry had shortages. This year my goal is a new freezer and I hope you don't mind I'm using this challenge sort of to get my family on board. I am getting much older and haven't done as much canning and freezing. But I have been buying meats on sale and I have a freezer full. I am going to try to do as much as of the pantry challenge as what I can but my main goal is to clean out the freezer and hopefully save enough money for a new one because this one has been causing some problems. So I am doing a challenge it is different from yours but I think it hits the high spots of what you are getting at. My health is a little better I would like to get back to more gardening and canning this year. I think I have a little more help and more people on board that realize how much that pantry saved us during really bad times. God bless you for what you do and take care.

Like you were explaining, I originally felt the Lord encouraging me to work on planting a food forest at my new house and I am a big gardener. And, I felt him prompting me to prep up. But, I think I have been running on that fear adrenaline until about 3 months ago. I have also re-learned to can and I know way more than I used to. I learned that canning regular meats and vegetables in pints is the way to go for me because I get about 3 meals out of a pint - and it's just me. For January, my plan is to can up 2 of my 3 freezer of meat and cut energy costs, inventory my pantry and reorganize it while making my meals from what I find. So, I am planning to do that this year as it is more needed. February will be setting up my garden starts for March or April. I will be following along with you though for sure!

I'm a single gal in a city. I have learned to purchase in bulk, shop sales, figure out my long term needs, and thoroughly enjoy all kinds of videos of homesteaders, expecially three rivers, traditional, acre and more. My freezer top of my fridge is tiny and I always keep ground beef, ground turkey and fish. I got a pressure canner and I will be canning some things to be less concerned about electricity. I'm excited to see how you use up your odds and ends to get ready for next growing season. What I would love to see if you have one is a recipe for kidney. They sit in that freezer, mocking me for about a year now as I reach past for a package of beef heart, or liver. I bought them on purpose for a variety of organ meat, but Lord help me to use it! Thank you for this "not a spirit of fear " challenge.

Unfortunately there are way to many families that cater to what there kids will only eat. That is not a wise thing. Back in the day as a kid we ate what was prepared for us or went hungry. We learned the importance of eating what we have. Love your channel God bless you and your family

We have always done a no spend January but this is first year combining with pantry challenge. I am excited to challenge us to not only use our pantry but to get back to eating healthy! Our freezers are so full and we have many jars of jam to use up so I can use up frozen fruit to make more jam! I am so happy you talked about the fear of using up your jars you canned. I thought I was the only one that felt that way! Another great reason I am looking forward to this challenge. We are planning our garden this week and I am doubling it so it's time to use up my hardwork. Wisdom over Fear!

I am so excited to be joining this challenge this year. It is a bit different for my family as we don't grow our own fresh items and do purchase everything from local stores. I am doing this challenge as more of a way to reign myself back in. I have been lax on our budget and feel like I could do so much better and with what is going on in the world there is no better time than now. I also have a stocked freezer and need to use up older items. We are a family of 9, and I plan on allowing myself $75 per week for fresh produce/dairy. We usually spend $1000 or more a month on groceries.

This challenge would be great for preppers too. It would show them what they are missing in their storage and how to cook from the food they have accumulated. A wealth of knowledge can come from this challenge no matter where you are coming from with your storage purposes. Best of luck to all. Happy New Year!!

@@HomewithLora mad you're right. The idea of the challenge is not to spend any money in groceries during the duration of it. Since that order came out of your pocket in December it doesn't count for January. It's like when you order from Amazon, eBay or Wish you put upfront but things ain't delivered immediately.

I love how you say fasting from the food gratification, so true. We are an abundant society and many live on instant gratification, even with food. We consider a "treat" a form of gratification, that craving for a sweet or salty store bought treat, but may consider it a staple in their diet.

I've been doing something similar to this since 2014, when I became a single mom after 32 years of marriage. So I didn't think I could learn anything new by participating but that it would be good for motivation and moral support, making it feel like being part of a community of like minded people, instead of feeling deprived.
But listening to this video I realized that I like you, fall back on the easy, more convenient things and the favorites especially when work is hard. So I'm busy now making a list of all the lesser used items that are time consuming or a pain in the neck to cook. Its a whole different mindset to approach it from that angle. Instead of it just being about not spending money its about being mindful to use more of the things in the pantry that are getting overlooked.
Another idea that might help people get their kids on board is to make them a part of the planning. Just like letting kids help cook and help garden gets them interested in eating things they normally wouldn't eat, perhaps showing them what you have that needs to be used and ask them for ideas. Say "What do you think we could make with this?" and "What would this taste good with?" And even if their ideas are crazy, as long as they don't ruin the ingredients go with it! You might discover something great, like you were saying they might even become family favorites!

Same for me re: saving money. We have a lot of frozen fish and deer meat from last year, so I need to make sure to use that before we start getting more. Same with my frozen berries. We have so many frozen blue/black berries from our garden, so I need to make sure to make room for more that'll be coming off soon. We don't have a lot of fresh fruit coming off during the winter, so we'll have a lot of fruit smoothies and popsicles made with our frozen fruit from the garden.

My thoughts are stock up on very basic long-term storage as food insurance....but simply leave it alone unless a true need arises. The yearly garden plus long-term grains and legumes would be a perfect plan in hard times.
For us we are hoping to buy a year supply of all shelf stable healthy grains and legumes for the year with our tax refund this year. We live on a smaller income and have a larger family so by stocking up our grocery focus can be produce and milk throughout the year. We are also investing in gardens this year.

    Great challenge for busy households!
We do not face your challenges with a large family, just two of us here.
Where we live there is no Azure Standard (Canada) or anything like it.
We rely on local retail grocery stores and travelling long miles to reach bulk distributors, which we do once a year. There are no local producers that sell regular produce, only artisanal specialty items for the affluent, well beyond the financial reach of working people. Our approach to grocery stores is decidedly different than yours.
    We shop sales. Year round.
I don't use menu's as I enjoy the daily creativity of preparing meals, and do not face the challenges of dependents in the home.
I prepare meals from my base of recipes, the ingredients are always on hand, basic ingredients such as rice, beans, legumes, pasta, frozen vegetables, meat divided into portions by us, whole grain flours milled by me, baked goods including bread baked by me, herbs and spices primarily dehydrated from our garden. I can hundreds of jars of garden produce every year.
My base of recipes includes "lazy day" meals, such as tortellini with homemade pesto, homemade sausage patties on homemade bread with homemade condiments, macaroni and cheese with mixed vegetables. All recipes include generous portions of vegetables and treat meat as a condiment.
I like your idea of a challenge, and appreciate your need for menus with your busy life.
So I won't be following your challenge because we rely on sales in the grocery stores to survive, and to miss eight or nine weeks of sales would leave huge holes in our food inventory and disrupt the flow in our approach to attaining quality food at reasonable prices.

Please, please, please don't apologize for talking... that's what we're here for! You are one of the most level headed voices on YT and we all value your insight and outlook, and many need to hear the wisdom of your words. I was just trying to explain to someone who left a scathing comment on another channel doing a no-spend January food challenge and you said it so much more eloquently, though I got there in the end and we walked away from the conversation friendly and with a better understanding of each other's views. I also suspect that she'll be tuning in now, where she wasn't planning on it before thinking we were all foolish for using up All.The.Things and having nothing left. I'll be playing along but with parameters that make sense for my family. And since I am including an allowance for fresh milk and some produce, I think I am also comfortable taking advantage of sales on non-perishables but my plan is to store them in another room and only restock the kitchen pantry after January. I don't want the purchases to influence how I cook during the month. We definitely have a few things in the pantry that have been neglected for more convenient options, so that is my starting point in addition to items approaching their best buy dates. I'm also making January my "Canuary" and dealing with the 15 gallon bags of tomatoes I froze in July and August, as well as canning meats from the freezer to clear some space, and to make some convenient ready made canned soups to stretch over the rest of winter. I could listen to you talk food preservation and preparation all day and all night, so no need to apologize for sharing your wisdom. Perhaps think of it this way... God gave you the gift of eloquent speech and the ability to teach. He would not want you to stifle that out of self consciousness. While I don't always share your religious views, I do consider you a blessing and hope you and your family have a safe and happy new year!!!

what you said about your beginning journey of canning was so so important and informational to many especially beginners . . . and maybe those who have dabbled in canning and then like your beginning experience thought maybe it wasn't as good as fresh but then never realized why-- thanks

Due to the extreme heat in Phoenix during the months of July and August, we will be doing this challenge then. So for now I am taking notes and looking out what I need to add to my Spring Garden that I didn't have in my fall Garden. Are growing seasons are a little offset from many areas in the country. However, this year we have the added incentive of a baby arriving in July! So this year we are really just not inclined to go to the store during July and August. Instead we'll stay home and focus on our family. There are some worries my husband has had on the scale of planning that you have given some very brilliant ideas on how to correct the problems that we have had in those areas. I am so grateful that you put out this video for those purposes alone! Luckily my children will grow up with this and not realize that it's something that we're just starting now because our oldest isn't quite 2. You and your family are truly a blessing to us and we look forward to the example and the inspiration that you present in each of your videos. Thank you! Happy New Year!

My sister once saw me try to explain a decision I had made to my daughter when she was two. She asked why I didn’t do a “because I said so” with her because I am the parent. I said she may not understand everything I say, but because I take the time and effort to speak with her about it it shows my regard for her. She understands that.

I 500% agree with all you said . Your children could pick a food and challenge each other for usage ideas. You’d have to set the boundaries on this but try to make sure some version of each child’s selection gets made . I find even my own grown son will get on board if he is directly involved and he helps me so much . Each year we have an October fest challenge and a Holiday challenge where we each come up with a theme appropriate meal or dessert and try it . The “boys” son @ hubby always need a helping hand but we end up having fun, some epic failures ( it was the recipe, my story ) a good laugh and a lot of delicious new foods .
You are a very wise woman .

I agree with your point about the freezer but for us its different this year. I canned up meats over the past year and I would like to use them before my frozen stuff. Then I can just can what is in the freezer. I am told canned meats change in texture after a while. I need to use those up! I always do big broth batches but I like your idea of doing smaller batches to use stuff up. Its going to be a great month!

I do this challenge every January and February with the main goal of eating what’s in the pantry. I still shop, but in December I go thru that pantry and know what I have so I meal plan accordingly.
I do not stock up before this bc I honestly don’t know what’s in the pantry until I catalog it the last days of December.
    Good luck!

Jessica thank you again for sharing. I am going to try the pantry challenge if only for a few weeks in January. We are planning to be on vacation for a month so I cannot participate for the whole month of January and February. I will however over the next few weeks use what I have frozen in the freezer and the foods I canned and put up on the shelf. Next year I hope to be able to participate for the full two months.

Checking out this video after watching Living Traditions. Very good points but I had to laugh when you said "How do you get the children on board?"
Well folks, in my day, you ate what was put in front of you or you went to bed hungry. LOL. I know this isn't the way things are done now adays but it would seem to me that the foods you store up are things the family eats anyway for the most part. At least that's what I do. I don't can hot peppers because we don't eat them so I don't have to worry about using them up...and so forth.
This even would save money for those of us that don't have a homestead because we watch for sales. Buy in season and preserve to use until the next time things are in season.
Be blessed. Have now subscribed so I don't miss anything. Thanks.

Im planning to do all of Jan and Feb with 1 exception. I am going to allow 1 online purchase each month, one will be so I can purchase a pressure canner and the other will be a bulk food order (oats, flour, sugar). We just moved to 3 acres this year that we are going to start raising some of our own meat and all of our own vegetables and fruit so up until now we have relied on local farmers and the mass amount of our groceries have been from the supermarket which we want to stop completely so the challenge will help kick start that goal. To be honest I think we have enough food in our house to feed our family of 7 for approx 1 year so I am not expecting the challenge to be hard but I could totally be wrong lol.

This is a great opportunity to become more self-aware. I too, rely on my shelf ready home canned items because they're so easy. Time to dig deep. Just as we grow stronger by regular fasting, doing this helps us break that dependency on shopping.

Can you do a video on your long term storage? What do you store and how do you store it? Also I remember you mentioned you freeze your grains when you bring them home from azure. Does the moisture affect the storage for you? I’m worried that moving a 25 Lb bag of grain from freezer to 5 gal bucket the moisture will transfer with it

I just stumbled on your channel recently. I’m so glad I found you!!!! This video! ❤️God knew what support I needed on my journey and what I needed to hear. Thank you for sharing your heart and the wisdom you have learned. I needed to hear it and I’m so glad God used you to share it with me. Overcoming fear and trusting that God will provide is something I have been working on. We are at the beginning of our homestead journey. We have had a small garden for the last couple years, but not quite enough yet to fill our pantry. And I’ve let a lot of fear hold me back from fully jumping into canning. We are planning to expand the garden this year. And I’m going to start canning. We hunt and fish. And we raised meat birds for the first time this year. We have a fairly large pantry stocked, but it’s not organized well and I feel fear has dictated some of the decisions when it comes to using and stocking it. I’m excited to use this pantry challenge to start using things up so they aren’t wasted and begin a healthy rotation, so we are prepared for the items we will be putting up this year. I haven’t decided exactly how I’m going to join you on this challenge but I am excited to give it a try. I love your channel! I have been learning so much from your videos! I pray that God continues to bless you and your family this year! Happy New Year!

Please expand upon what you've said about soaking grains before using them. If you soak your wheat, for example, it'll be too mushy to grind. Oatmeal will soak up any liquid it's in so how does soaking it overnight make it healthier? I'd sure appreciate a video dedicated to this subject. Thanks.
