  • This is the ultimate guide to deep signal targets on the Minelab E-Trac and Minelab CTX 3030. I have put together several of my live digs on supper deep iffy targets and show you the different FE numbers as well as audio signals that those deep targets produce.

    He is 100 % right I find deep silver coins with high fe numbers as high as 27 fe. I run wide open etrac with only 30 to 35 fe notched out. And don’t use any disc in upper left hand corner like many people do as well as stock programs because you will likely miss silver dollars and some half dollars. Using less disc. Will allow your machine to go deeper and react more naturally to a targets I.d.

    When I bought my Etrac 4 months ago this made no sense to me but now it makes so much sense! Too much discrimination you won’t find very deep targets or good targets in the iron. Goes to show they are in fact tone machines. Brilliant video thank you.

    Thank you. I've been using E-Trac for 5 years maxed out, just month ago I upgraded to CTX 3030. And I have learned a lot from your video... I'm now guessing how much deep goodies I have missed(not dug) in the past... :D

    Believe it or not, I just bought a new E-trac new. I have a Nox 800, but they're running the E-trac out in Australia for like $550usd, so I grabbed one. I'm just trying to get the basic gist of a few things before it turns up tomorrow, to get me started. I'm super interested to see how it goes. A couple of my older friends still swear by it with a 13" or 15" coil and think that I'll get finds from places I've hunted out with the Nox....we'll see :)

    Just got the E trac today because the deus doesn't wanna hunt. My hunting buddie has hunted our town out almost with it, so ima try to give him some competition. I hear there is a serious learning curve, so I'm off to the races. Nice helpful info...now I have to get a NEL...

      @@cutaplug Love your response Cutaplug. I am retarded and cannot program a metal detector, or struggle doing so. I owned a deus, and hated it. Only thing I liked, it had a clock, and it's so nice to know what time it is when you have to be somewhere.. I think the dues was made only for Europe.

    Some of my best finds have been 9+ inches with the etrac. I rarely pay attention to the numbers. If the sound is consistent with any kind of squeak, it is dug. Got 3 halfs, numerous dimes/quarters, and a Draped Bust in 2016 that way. Low and slow when I find any old coins. Love that machine!

    I recently bought an Etrac and have been trying to understand all the sounds. I have read the manual and the additional book. I am getting better about shallow targets and to my folly have passed up signals like this. Your video was very helpful and greatly appreciated!!! I know I have to go back and work those tones!! I subscribed too. Thanks again !!

    I'm thinking about buying the NEL 12x13" coil for my ETRAC after watching your ultimate guide to Minelab E-TRAC & CTX 3030 deep iffy signals metal detecting live digs. I was considering buying a Deus but decided to get the coil and give it a try. I have a lot of places to go back and see if it will pick up the iffy signals I was getting with my stock and 6x8 coils. I have watch a lot of your videos and you seem to explain how to use the E-TRAC to where I get what you are saying. Thanks for sharing your knowledge with us, I really enjoy watching.....................

    For all the new detectorists out there watching this for the first time, do not dig a massive plug like this in a public park. With accurate pinpointing the plug should be half this size and the sod should always be cut with a hinge of grass attached to the original sod so the grass has a chance to recover. We are losing the rights to hunt in many locations because of poor recovery and plugs popping out with mowers. Don’t leave a trace and we will have a future for this great hobby.

      Agree 100%
      I was thinking the same thing and cringing as I watched this and his other videos. The only thing I'll say to the contrary is that sometimes, a very deep and narrow hole doesn't leave a lot of room to maneuver, but the solution is to dig wider toward the bottom of the hole. Avoid making the top of the hole wider if you possibly can.

    Totally agree with everything. I’ve been using the etrac for about 12 years. I go mostly by sound though as well. I look at the numbers to see what I have. Have mine setup so the silver is a little higher toned.

I want to thank you Cutaplug... This is absolutely the best explanation of how to understand and successfully use Minelabs discrimination (I watched it at least 5 times to drum it in!). Hey Rusty, Thanks for such a great video, as usual. I got an Etrac last year and primarily used AUTO +3. After watching this video I went out to one of my hunted out locations. I used 22 manual. I dug my first DEEP silver, not one but two. Last year I would go over something iffy and put it in quick mask and the signal would improve drastically! So my brain always said alright something good. NOPE..... Key thing is after watching this video I understood that if a iffy target doesnt change after going to quick mask chances are its a DEEP keeper. I dug about 6 deep coins. All 8-10 inches deep. One was the whole length of my TRX PP. Found 2 Merc's this deep. Also, I noticed you like the Nel Vs the Ultimate. I dont see very many people down the Ultimate coil.
    The question I have for you is during this hunt I was running the Nel Big 15x17 coil. What I was going to do is get the 18x15 Detech SEF coil, then do some comparing with the too. Just wanted your thoughts and have you ever used the 18x15 SEF coil?
    Thanks Pal

    Ok, I just bought a Etrac and its in the way. My hunting buddy is doing really well with his. But I have to smile when you call a deep target at 10 inches. But yes I think silver is silver and I really dont care about targets over 10 inches. This video really helped me understand the manual I read online.

    • @cutaplug
      @cutaplug  7 років тому +1

      The Etrac is great for silver coins and I think you'll be really happy with it. I'm not sure what you mean when you say you have to smile about a 10 inch silver coin. Do you think that's an exaggeration or do you think 10" is shallow on a silver dime?

      Something really cool happens when you start to find silver coins. The more you find the more your brain learns to recognize them and the easier it is to find more. This snowball effect thing sort of happens. It takes a lot of work and hours to get to that point but once you're there it is sort of like putting your shoes on in the morning lol. JD and I got 25+ silver together in a single day TWICE within an 8 day period. Sort of makes you jaded after that.

    • @cutaplug
      @cutaplug  7 років тому

      I had set up that TTF pattern for that site just cause I wanted deep stuff and felt lazy about going full TTF lol. The main part to keep open is the FE side when looking for deep coins. You can descim out some of the CO and still find really deep stuff. You do run the chance of a lower conductivity target masking a high conductivity target but the chance is very slim I'd say.

    In the first dig I noticed when you pinpointed the fe # went to 35, on my ctx I'm getting a lot of falsing from iron reading from 8-46 - 11-46 sometimes 12 fe is in the mix, I go to quick mask and shows to be iron with 33-35 fe # I feel I'm leaving coins behind sometimes when I decide not to dig (After the fact) what's the average of digging those type signals and indeed finding there was a coin with the iron? I replicated your E-Trac pattern for my CTX do you recommend any other changes using this on the CTX? (I know theyre pretty much the same other than audio. Thanks for your information, my coin count is going up since watching this video. HH!

    Howdy:) Great video as always on this topic:) Haven't watched detecting videos in a while but had to see this:) This will help a lot of people if they get the basics. Tone first then investigate:) Was nice seeing you swapping programs like that. I don't think people do that like they should. That said, I don't have the TT program you are running. I've always used the basic relic then the changes. Might help me at the fairgrounds this spring if you have a link or video with that TT program. 140+ years of junk in a small area I'm still trying to get through, Plus that TT looks like it won't give me a headache as quick LOL:) I'm still trying to run a bigger coil there but so hard with all the iron!!!!!!! I know there is more deeper LOL:) Glad someone can put this into words and show, hard for me to explain. Sixth sense but so much more LOL:) All the best:) Axel P.S. Did get one silver washington, silver ring, and 14K earring so far to start this 2017. Now I'm done:( Lake Michigan shoreline is freezing now:(

    • @cutaplug
      @cutaplug  7 років тому +1

      Tone first then investigate is exactly right =) Too many people get caught up in numbers that they forget to listen and learn/grow with their machines. That TTF was something I put together because I was being really lazy that day and didn't feel like looking down every time there was a pull tab or can slaw. The idea behind it was to be able to take advantage of the TTF, open screen, and depth on super deep silver while discriminating lower conductivity targets. To be honest I don't even know what I had it set at but you can probably get really close to the descrim numbers by the screen shot. I know exactly what you're referring to when you say sixth sense. I've thought about that phrase a lot when seeking out highly productive sites to detect =) Grats on silver and gold already in 2017 I haven't even been out yet lol

    I live in Michigan & I've found on several occasions that I hit what seems to be a good silver target. Good FE & CO#'s and nice tone and the target stays in place. When I go to pinpoint, it'll hit with the FE in the high 20's to 30's and is off to the side of where I was originally getting my target. I've dug many of these and just pull up nails/iron. I always check my holes and nothing. Is what is happening a false halo effect? or should I be just digging deeper and more after I remove the iron. Thank you and thanks for the video's..!! Love watching and learning..!!

    • @rustycraig3536
      @rustycraig3536 6 років тому

      Pay attention in the future and see how many of the nails you find like this are bent at a 90 degrees. Sometimes bent nails really can trick you and you just have to deal with them. If you're digging straight nails like this I would pay attention to the FE number and if it goes over about 25-26 skip it. The FE in the 25-30 range is where you start to lose efficiency. GL and HH!

    You mention you have a video on how to set up your pattern on the E-Trac and I'm guessing it's the same on the CTX. Trouble is, I can't find the video. Can you, or someone following you, point me in the right direction. Thanks.

Dissapointed to find a nail a the bottom of a hole a few times . Using the Andy S pattern following the video. Can you please help me address this issue? Thanks

    Running the CTX3030 for about a year now. Switched from the CZ-3D. It performs meh-ok but I am having trouble getting any decent find deeper than 5-6 inches. My CZ seemed to outperform my CTX and was more accurate on determining the depth of coin sized targets. Read Andy Sabisch's book. Tried multiple target separations, hunt primarily open screen, mulitple modes. IDK what im doing wrong but the thing does not want to perform like what i think a 2500$ detector should. Nulls a lot, falses a lot, iron infested areas are a total bust. Even purchased the 6" coil. That thing gives me a coin tone and ID for every piece of iron there is. No separation at all, no iffy signal. Im at the point where I want to send it in just for piece of mind. Im just pretty frustrated when I watch videos and people get iron in the hole with a coin and its sounding and reading like I think mine should. Im not sure about mineralization. Ive tried the ferrous coin and ground coin and tried enabling ground balance a few times with worse results. High trash seems to be the most stable but im still struggling.
    Having trouble pinpointing too. IDK if its my technique but I dont think so. I spent years detecting mines and IEDs in Afghanistan so i have a fairly decent technique for pinpointing and sweeping, ive tried cross method and the DD specific wobble-back or whatever that is.
    Anyway.. thanks for making these vids. Would like to get a channel going myself. Here in the midwest we dont have many people with channels. Maybe I should put some time into editing vids as i have tons of footage from my go pro. Good luck this year! HH

      What state are you from and what are the soil conditions there? It sounds like you are in an area with very high mineralization or you are hunting sites with very high levels of trash and iron which is not what the CTX is good at. 10" silver dimes are possible in low to medium trash areas without a lot of minerals in the soil. But I have found 9" coins in TN red clay too where it is pretty high mineral content. I also use a larger coil when looking for deep coins so that helps with depth too. GL and HH =)

    Using a ctx3030 with a 17" coil. I'm looking for a pint glass container of pennies buried 70 years ago at the base of a tree. Of course there's no way to tell how big the tree will be at this point. Any chance something like that will still be detectable? I'm thinking if still there I won't be able to get the coil directly over the jar. I know that's a hypothetical; just need an opinion. Thanks for the excellent videos.

    Is the Andy's program a custom program or is it one of the factory programs on the e-trac. If it is a custom program are the factory installed programs good for finding deep coins? Awesome finds btw Cutaplug I am hopeing to get a E-Trac this Spring. GL&HH

      The Andy S. is a custom pattern and I have a video on my channel that shows how to set it up. The factory settings are OK for finding coins but I would work my way up to a more open screen and higher manual sensitivity eventually for the deeper stuff. Spend some time with factory and auto +3 for a while and then try Andy S. =) GL and HH!

    I saw 1 guy... that ran his on Ferris instead of conduct. and seemed to have a more pure tone on silver. Have you ever experimented with that?

    • @cutaplug
      @cutaplug  7 років тому

      What do you mean when you say more pure tone on silver? I would consider the CTX to have a more pure tone on silver (it doesn't jump around as much) but it makes it harder to distinguish a silver coin from non silver. With practice on the CTX it can easily be done. I have run a lot of TTF before but haven't messed with multi Ferris.

    • @WilliamR-nt5ek
      @WilliamR-nt5ek 7 років тому

      I'm considering a E Trac... I currently run a Explorer II. The CTX would be way out of reach for my budget. About the more pure tone on Silver.. I saw a guy do air test of different silver coins... in Conductive mode then on Ferris mode.. and the silver seemed to give a more pure tone ID ... to the ears in ferris. He had a explorer II but I'm thinking the etrac would do the same. Logic or my logic says the conductive mode would work better on silver... now I'm not so sure. That guy's video is titled ... Minelab Explorer Air Test... UA-camr... Mike Leary. Was interesting. I'll be doing some experimenting.

    • @cutaplug
      @cutaplug  7 років тому

      I do all my experimenting in field because I feel it provides the best results. What I would do is set up both user modes and have them ready. One for deep coins in conductive and one for deep coins in Ferris. Then spend some time finding deep signals in one setting, when you get one switch to the other. You will soon realize which works best for you in your area. GL and HH!

    Question: when choosing tones. I don’t like the 50 CO that it’s usually set as. If I switch to 4 tones. Which one do I want to use to find Silver? 4 FE or 4 CO?

    • @rustycraig1713
      @rustycraig1713 6 років тому +1

      To be honest I don't have that much experience with 4 tone FE. I like running 50 CO because there is a lot more information in the tone and I can cherry pick easily. I do know that the FE numbers will jump all over the place on very deep coins so I would be careful about the FE tones. For example the FE tone will be cut off at a certain number (maybe 17FE?) but if you're only digging the high tones you can miss a deep silver coin if it reads in the 20's on the FE line (which often happens). I have found the CO numbers to be much more stable than the FE numbers on very deep coins so I would probably stick to CO. The reason 2 tone FE numbers will sound louder and more clear than 50 tone is because with FE it's almost like an analog audio signal (beep or don't beep) but if you're comparing 4 tone vs 4 tone I'm suspecting the results would be similar. A good test would be to go to an area where you know there are deep coins, find a deep coin signal, then switch between the two and see which you prefer. Or you could just bury a super deep merc and test that way.

    Rusty,
    On my E-trac, When I set it up like your and bring the sensitivity up, it makes constant noises like its going crazy. I usually have to tone it down a few. When you machine does this, am I to assume you do the same thing? Or are you keeping it up and ignoring all the noises until you find a good signal.
    Bryan, Vero

    • @rustycraig1713
      @rustycraig1713 5 років тому

      This is normal and part of getting better. The more you practice the more your brain will learn to distinguish good from bad signals. Eventually you will be able to detect very quickly at high sensitivity. You will receive a lot of information and be able to decipher it and primarily dig the good tones. I think an important part of being able to find a lot of silver is to be efficient. This means 1. covering a lot of ground quickly, 2. being able to distinguish good from bad targets so you don't waste time on the bad ones. The 3rd part is gaining an advantage by finding deeper targets running higher sensitivity. So basically I detect fast with the etrac, receive a lot of signals, and decipher those to find the good targets. You have to be careful though because you will get "brain fatigue" if you are running your sensitivity too high for your ability and at that point you will start to even miss the good signals. Even I do it sometimes and have to take a break by reducing it some. If I feel like having a lazy day I will either add more discrimination or reduce sensitivity so I can relax =)

    I have both ctx 3030 and etrac and I will tell you the 3030 is not any more powerful than etrac. I actually like my etrac more because it has better sound for high conductors like silver. Silver is actually higher pitched than the clad. The etrac has variability setting that the ctx lacks. Not sure why minelab did not put in ctx but it’s a bit disappointing.

    Some really great info. Learned something new. Is this the same pattern that is in Andy's book on page 135? if so do you use all the same settings? I have heard you talk about 2 tone fe. You tried 2 tone fe on the ctx to pull deep coins in iron? If so what settings do you use for 2 tone fe. I usually hunt using a open pattern with a little disc. but, want to try this pattern in the video to see if works better than mine. Thanks

    • @cutaplug
      @cutaplug  7 років тому

      It's been years since I set the pattern up so not sure what page number it was on. I'm not even sure it's the exact pattern but I'm sure the settings are different. The settings are something I created based on Andy S., Goes4ever, earthmansufer, and my own experience with deep coins. I have a video on my channel of my exact settings and pattern I use for deep silver and I've used the same ones for years with great success. I got the CTX in TN and almost all the coins here are shallow so I haven't dug that many deep coins with the CTX. The CTX and e-trac are extremely similar so I would say it will perform the same way as the e-trac in that regard. An open pattern is great for finding coins but you have to find the right balance so you don't get brain fatigue and start missing good targets. If you hear 100 signals in an open scene and miss the 1 good signal in there then it would be much better to have discrimination on and hear one good signal and dig it.

    • @kevinmccrory5264
      @kevinmccrory5264 7 років тому +1

      Would love to see some videos of you hunting deep coin targets using the CTX. I have learned a lot about what I know from my friend Ed Huffman. Have bought several CTX's from him. Mainly interested in the patterns you use and where you set your fe line in combined. Do you know if there is a way to set the CTX up to give that high pitch flutty sound on silver like the etrac gives you? Just wondering Thanks

    • @cutaplug
      @cutaplug  7 років тому

      There is a live dig in the video with the CTX but to be honest there are way more shallow coins here in TN than deep ones. The CTX will act pretty much identical to the e-trac on deep stuff. As far as the combined settings I messed around with combined a little but wasn't that impressed with it so switched back to the multi tone conductive. The last stretch of detecting I did I found 136 silver in less than 3 months using the CTX, Andy S., and multi conductive so i'm absolutely positive that it works. I think too many people get caught up in trying to find the perfect settings when it's actually about using as much of an open screen as you can and learning to quickly analyze the audio signal and number readings to dig good targets. As far as the flutty sound you can't produce the same flutty sound on the CTX I think due to the more stable circuitry. You can definitely tell silver from non silver coins by looking at the numbers and though.

    • @kevinmccrory5264
      @kevinmccrory5264 7 років тому

      I guess I will have to try 50 tones cond. I have always used combined on the CTX. I have always used a almost totally open screen until I seen the pattern you were using in your videos. Seems like most the places around my area have iron in them so I deal with iron falsing. Was hoping your pattern would help with that. And yes silver coins are a lot deeper in my area.( North Vernon, Indiana ) Most silvers are 7 inches plus. Most the places I have hunted are spots that most have given up on. Older sites that are high in iron or trash. Thanks for your help and keep the great videos coming.
