  • I bought the #cheapest #Intel I5 PC Computer that can run Direct X12 applications from Amazon. What I got was a refurbished #Dell Optiplex Small Form Factor with dual channel ram, a better processor than I expected and a machine that came to me in beautiful shape. I was more than impressed.
    **Note - I failed to point out that the front has two USB 2 type A connectors and the back has two USB 2 and two USB 3 type A connectors. ***
    Of course I also had to get some baseline benchmarks, because with a machine like this, you have to do some upgrading!

    I put a used/refurbished DELL 7070 on order. When I received it, I was surprised when it was absolutely clean inside out and came with no damage what so ever, and it had the fresh smell of something clearly brand new. It had turned out that despite the supplier saying refurbished units were in stock, at this time they were not, and so things were delayed a bit while the supposedly used but refurbished version I had ordered was replaced with a brand new untouched unit. Anyhow, it came with an i5-8500 CPU, 16 GB DDR4 ram, WiFi/Blu-Ray, and Win10 on a 1T HDD. After upgrading from Win10 to Win11, I added a Samsung 980 Pro 500GB PCIe 4.0 MVMe SSD and transferred the HDD contents on over. The 1T HDD was then disconnected but is available to provide OS backup in mere minutes if the OS on the Samsung 980 Pro is at some point being corrupted. I also upgraded the system via adding a PowerColor Radeon RX 6400 4GB GDDR6 PCI Express 4.0 Low Profile Video Card. So far, so good.

    I was fortunate to find an eBay seller that does the same level of refurbishing that you described, and purchased an OptiPlex 7010 SFF late last year (Oct' 22). It's my current project computer and I've been having a lot of fun upgrading it.

    I'm not a gamer but I tend to assume if a computer will run all these hi-def multiplayer games it'll do what I need. I play with photoshop and Fl.Studio (a DAW). I know the specs (RAM & so on) meet the system requirements of my music production software but so have the last two (r.i.p). So, is my assumption incorrect? Should I upgrade the sound card on this? Any advice?

    • @ThatPaulGuy
      @ThatPaulGuy  2 роки тому +1

      You might, if you want true fidelity type reproduction for recording but size will be a concern because of the width of the case. There is no HDMI for an external DAK, so unless you are okay with USB, a low profile sound card might be in order. I didn't test a lot of the sound settings, unfortunately, because I was getting sound through the HDMI with the video card.

    Could this cpu, paired with 16 gb ddr4 ram, 256 gb ssd m.2 and a 1650 gtx be enought to do: web design, use photoshop and ilustrator and run some electric and electronic circuit simulation apps? I am on a budget

    • @ThatPaulGuy
      @ThatPaulGuy  3 місяці тому

      You would probably have to use the CPU in a different build to add the 1650 (keep in mind that its only 4GB VRAM). I think that CPU is also a bit old to take advantage of M.2 and DDR4 memory but a Sata SSD works fine. You probably want to be looking for a sixth or seventh gen i5 or i7 set up to take advantage of DDR4 and M.2 . eBay or maybe Ali Express should have some options instead of this one. This set up is also much cheaper on Amazon in January '24.
