Yeah, I'm not learning Portugese, I'm learning French, but I've just been watching videos to give myself the ability to read Portuguese because I may learn it later on, anyway yeah, majority of the videos I've found are about Brazilian portugese.
The Open and Closed Vowels need a lot of detailed study. This is the sixth time that I am going through the video and taking down the important points that I have missed out. Thanks for the painstaking effort to compile the matter.Muitissimo obrogada Rui e Joel.Que Deus abençoe vocês imensamente. 👌🏾👌🏾👏👏🙏
Este vídeo é fantástico. E a possibilidade de ouvir repetidamente e de me gravar e verificar a minha pronúncia é realmente incrível. Vocês estão a fazer um trabalho fantástico. Continuem com o trabalho. Estou a estudar há mais de 2 anos e estou a achar a vossa plataforma extremamente útil neste momento para a minha aprendizagem. Portuguese is not easy!!! But it is rewarding to learn.
OK. OK. I’ve studied 13 languages - including Polish, Slovak, Norwegian, German, French, Spanish, Hebrew…..You guys are absolutely THE BEST!!!!! In so many ways. Keep this all coming. I’m going to sign up. Have dabbled in Portuguese before (started with Continental but had to move to Brazilian bc of lack of resources). You’ve solved this all. Muito obrigado!!!!!!!!!!! Fabuloso!!!!!!!
I FINALLY found the video about I've been looking for on the net. I'm from Chile and for so long I've been studying Euroean Portuguese but almost all the information I've found is about Brazilian Portuguese. Now I feel more confident to improve my European Portuguese pronunciation. Thank you guys. Kind regards from Santiago de Chile!
Excellent overview. I've been working on DuoLingo's Portuguese for over 800 days, but these videos add dimension and texture to that learning. I'll continue to subscribe in order to work on comprehension, pronunciation, grammar and vocabulary. My purpose as a nearly 80 year old is to speak when and if I travel and stay in Portugal. Eventually, Brazil. Good humor and clarity.
Great explanations, obrigada! I will need to go through this a few times but just watching once it’s explained so much about how & why my neighbours pronounce words & how I should pronounce them too.
I don't know how much of the video is scripted and rehearsed, but it really feels like a completely natural conversation while conveying the information in a very structured and helpful manner. And that vowel chart is just brilliant! I'm a native Portuguese speaker but this was very informative and interesting!
Thanks for the kind words! This was one of our first videos. We planned it very carefully and made the accompanying ebook first, and used that as the structure of our video. So the structure was tightly planned but our conversation was unscripted and unrehearsed. Lots of editing after, but we are very proud of this one, even though it’s older and we just recorded it using the built in Mac webcam (or maybe iPhone) 😂
@PracticePortuguese I see! Thanks for the context. The previous effort definitely shows in the video. I love videos that age so well because they were well prepared, and remain evergreen resources that many people can use and even return to as reference. I have already bookmarked this one. Btw, if you're open to ideas for new videos, I have been curious for a treatment on how the Portuguese pronounce English words (e.g. how the "th" is pronounced more like a "t", etc.), either when speaking English or when using loan words while speaking Portuguese. There doesn't seem to be much content about it. I'd love to see your take on it and the phonetic explanations for the discrepancies. I think it might help both English speakers who want to sound more like native Portuguese, and Portuguese speakers (like me 😁) who would like to identify potential blind spots in their accent when speaking English. A double whammy! Either way, keep up the great work! You've earned an instant subscriber 😁
Não imaginam a minha felicidade quando dei com o vosso canal enquanto procurava vídeos em Português Europeu para mostrar a colegas que querem aprender a nossa Língua! Depois de tantas apps e canais em Português do Brasil, tiro-vos o chapéu pelo vosso fantástico trabalho! Muito obrigada!
Thanks a million for the elaborate, patient and painstaking presentation and explanation of - Vowels-- Open, Closed and Medium. Congratulations for this marvellous video-- it was almost like an encyclopedia on Vowels in the Portuguese language. Muitissimo obrigada, Rui e Joel. Que Deus abençoe vocês imensamente. 👌🏾👌🏾👏👏🍰🎵🙏
Your videos, podcasts and online lessons are THE BEST!!!!! I have been searching for online European Portuguese lessons for years and cannot believe I only just found you! Please keep doing them just as you are, it's really wonderful!! Thank you!
Thank you for hosting these online classes. Your videos have been very helpful and pleasant to watch. I absolutely love your chemistry. Rui’s accent is very clear and I appreciate the slower pace when he reads. Joel your expressions give me life! I make the same ones.
So happy to have found your channel. This video is exactly what I needed. Bit by bit I’ve figured out some things in connected speech & vowels, but this excellent video will accelerate it. Again, thank you… Obrigada
Your chart is a masterpiece. I've been studying PTBR for three years and PTPT for two, but you managed to unlock some stuff I was still struggling with. Congrats and thank you !
Olá, muito obrigada! I learned portuguese during my 6-month stay in Portugal and this particular lesson helped me now to understand better the pronounciation of the vowels. It´s very useful and clearly explained. Thumbs up for the interactive diagram, that´s just awesome. Keep up with the good work.
Thanks guys, you explained that all really well. As a beginner, getting pronunciation more or less correct is so important, especially with Portuguese!
Ola, formadoros: Very many thanks for your detailed and precise explication of vowel pronunciation. Your efforts and motivation are very supportive of the beginner student. / I have but one reflection, if you'll not mind; and for it not as criticism to be received. This, then: When, with on the video more than one person present and to be speaking, the spatial absorption (of two people] may impact the visual presentation and have the tendency to detract from the subject; indeed, even to distract the viewer;; (This effect, especially pertinent when the formadoros are two very charming.] When, then the video screen will be consumed by two physical bodies and then will switch to diagrams of minuscule print does demand of the learner a continual acrobatic switch from large to small image. Not so problematical would this alternation be would the actual shift between speaker(s) and diagrams be made to be much smoother, seamless, if you will. Because the speech (english) and presentation of you both is superb and engaging; and with good conversational control and sharing of instruction. That is to say, with little to none interruption one of the other; and, if at all, then Rui seems to be the one interrupted. Indeed, he and whose english is excellent logically perhaps should verbally contribute more. Admittedly, my opinion largely may be due to my being a mere 'beginner'. Even so, one wishes there to be not any drawbacks to your useful website attracting and retaining viewer students. Bon courage. // D.C
The information and the explanation that you gave was so good that I felt the urgent need to go through it again Thanks a million, Rui and Joel. You are excellent teachers and you have the expertise to present your teaching. May God bless you and help you to be extremely successful in all your endeavours. I am from India, living in Goa which is known as a, Tourist's Paradise. Looking forward to more videos from you, Joel and Rui.👌🏾👌🏾👏👏👌🏾🙏
Just learning Portuguese before, fingers crossed, move to Madeira. Whew, need to watch this about 100 times! Think it is great and is really useful, love hearing a familiar accent with a Portuguese accent and the little cheeky comments too. The visuals really help me organize it in my brain....just realized you are the guys who made the app I am using!! Cool. Thanks guys, great job!!
Truly excellent. You both clearly explained a lot of the Brazilian/Continental differences a new learner sort of hears, but not really, and certainly doesn't understand. An overwhelming amount of material but very nicely presented, kudos e muito obrigado. Or "brigad" : )
I'm an on and off subscriber to the website! I really like the shorties :) I really appreciate this technical diagram with the IPA system. When I was studying Italian I bought a book which focused on this kind of stuff because I wanted to speak with perfect pronunciation. I imagine there isn't a book as technical as this for European Portuguese for foreigners! The only sound that I still think I need to perfect in this language is the "upside down" A. Most of these vowel sounds exist in Italian, but that kind of A doesn't (in Italian there's only one type of A). This is really useful to me right now because I'm starting to read graded readers (A1 book ahaha) and whilst I read out loud I try to do pronounce correctly!
That's a lot of information to take in but you guys are good teachers. I am only a few days into learning Portuguese so I will revisit this video when my vocabulary improves. Thanks.
This particular video makes me very happy it helps me so much just like the last one. Just wanted to let you guys know that you're awesome and you're really helping us out here.
Great video, wish you had coved the nasal sounds . I have been living in Portugal for 3 years, covid hibernation and mask wearing has hindered my learning. Your video was more helpful than the $40.00 hr classes I tried over zoom. Keep it up
Olà Joel e Rui ! Muito obrigada para tudo ! Chegei em Lisboa há quase um ano e nunca tive aulas de Português... Era muito difícil achar vídeos o outro documentos em Português europeu ; agradeço muito. Este vídeo foi particularmente útil para compreender a pronúncia e os podcasts são muito divertidos. Ajudam-me cada dia a falar melhor !
Excellent Video Presentation. I started learning BP this year 2020 and it cleared up a lot of my FRUSTRATION on how O strange at first but beautiful Portuguese Language is. MUITO OBRIGADO
Thank you. hello You two ! Just wondering why you did not talk about the sound using " ã " for example in your tonic vowels...? Many thanks ! Love you both ! You are EXCELLENT ! I enjoy every single podcast .
I'm using rosetta stone as well as Pimsleur to Learn Portuguese and rosetta stone is useful for writing and reading while Pimsleur offers a great "on the road" introduction to the pronunciation. The website and the video you guys have made are just a treasure because it is really up to date and it is really immersive. Pimsleur is much too formal to use in Lisbon or Oporto. I've subscribed to your website and after my psychology studies (I also follow a course to become a real estate agent) I believe this will allow me to enjoy life in the most friendly and beautiful country in the world!
THE BEST VIDEO I'VE EVER SEEN. THANK YOU VERY MUCH. COULD YOU PLEASE EXPLAIN TO ME ABOUT THE DIFERENCE BETWEEN THE WORDS GRANDFATHER AND GRANDMOTHER? THEY ARE VERY DIFFICULT TO ME. THANK YOU.
Thanks Freddy! Grandfather = avô (the ô is pronounced o) Grandmother = avó (the ó is pronounced ɔ) You can listen to the 2 sounds (and the others) in isolation using the interactive diagram at: www.practiceportuguese.com/words Hope that helps!
Para= by, to, for, Pára= stop, hold on ( A - â, á, an, ã ) ( O - ô, on, u, õ, ó ) ( E - é, i, ê, en ) ( I - i ) ( U - u ). ( i and u ) have always the same sound. Never ever any other sound. Your lesson are very good, portugese learners are in the right place here.
It's too bad there aren't many resources out there as good as this series for brazilian portuguese. I love how you take a metalinguistic approach to the lessons, which is uncommon. Most teachers figure "I speak the language therefor I can teach it," without having a knowledge of linguistics
it's really a useful video for me ! Awesome! And can you also make a video teaching how to pronounce the consonant "r" ? I am really confused that how should my tongue move when I pronounce it . thank you very much and looking forward to the next video!
Thanks for the comment, Pou. We will definitely consider this. "R", "nh" and "lh" are also other consonant sounds that are especially challenging to get used to, so we hope to cover them in a future series.
Great video, thanks!! Since it's sometimes impossible to know the pronunciation of the word based on its written form (and my ears don't always hear the difference) are there any resources available, like a dictionary (online or traditional) with IPA after every word?
There’s not nearly as much resources to learn European Portuguese. Thank you so much. I’m hoping I can find more channels like yours.
Yeah, I'm not learning Portugese, I'm learning French, but I've just been watching videos to give myself the ability to read Portuguese because I may learn it later on, anyway yeah, majority of the videos I've found are about Brazilian portugese.

Thank you so much!!! This is the clearest I've seen these vowels explained!

Para= by, to, for, Pára= stop, hold on ( A - â, á, an, ã ) ( O - ô, on, u, õ, ó ) ( E - é, i, ê, en ) ( I - i ) ( U - u ). ( i and u ) have always the same sound. Never ever any other sound. Your lesson are very good, portugese learners are in the right place here.
@@VieiraFi Bom dia.
Fantástico! Muito obrigado.
It's too bad there aren't many resources out there as good as this series for brazilian portuguese. I love how you take a metalinguistic approach to the lessons, which is uncommon. Most teachers figure "I speak the language therefor I can teach it," without having a knowledge of linguistics
Obrigada 🙏🏻
This is great! Thank you. How do I access the interactive diagram you created?
it's really a useful video for me !
Obrigado muito - este vídeo é otimo!! O melhor que tem sobre as vogais portuguesas :)
Very good
Absolutely brilliant. You guys sound like actuall linguists! Thanks!
Great video, thanks!! Since it's sometimes impossible to know the pronunciation of the word based on its written form (and my ears don't always hear the difference) are there any resources available, like a dictionary (online or traditional) with IPA after every word?
Nice work, obrigada!
Delightful and oh--useful too! Thanks.
