  • This mysterious and picturesque country located between India and China was closed for tourists until 1974. Today, everyone who’s ready to go through a lot of formalities and has enough money can visit Bhutan. Ans even though the borders are open, the King still tries to restrict the number of tourists using many different methods.
This is a country that decided to measure national happiness, has completely free healthcare, and nobody living on the streets. Sounds unbelievable, but this is all true about Bhutan, and that’s just the tip of the iceberg. So, wanna know why all the people who live in Bhutan are so happy? Let's find out more about their traditions and numerous bans.

    SUMMARY:
    - If a person loses their home, they just need to go to the king and he’ll give them a plot of land where they can build a house to live in and plant a garden to eat from.
    - Each Bhutanese resident has the right to free medical care. The country’s Ministry of Health has made it their goal to become “A nation with the best health.”
    - The Bhutanese people take their traditions and unique culture very seriously, and the king took great measures to protect his people from outside influences.
    - Speaking of traditions, Bhutanese people are required to wear traditional clothes in public. This nationwide dress code has existed for over 400 years.
    - In 2010, the king enacted a law prohibiting the cultivation, harvest, and sale of tobacco, making Bhutan the first country in the world with a total ban on tobacco. It’s impossible to buy it there, and you can’t smoke in public areas.
    - Bhutan is really concerned about ecology and nature. According to a local law, at least 60% of the country’s total area must be covered with woods.
    - The most popular ingredient in almost every Bhutanese dish is chilies. The Tourism Council even notes “Bhutanese people would not enjoy a meal that was not spicy.”
    - You can only go to Bhutan in groups of 3 or more. All documents and visas are issued by a state-appointed company.
    - All property and belongings like their homes, cattle, and land go to the eldest daughter, not son. Men are expected to earn their own fortunes.
    - It’s already illegal to import or use any chemical products there whatsoever. Everything they use is cultivated within the country and is all-natural.
    - Not every pilot can maneuver between mountaintops and land on a 6,500-foot-long highway right by people’s houses. Add strong winds to the challenge, and you’ll understand why take-offs and landings are only allowed during daylight hours. And there are only 8 pilots in the world that can do this.
    - If you visit Bhutan, you may fall in love with the land, but try not to fall for a local or else you’ll get your heart broken. It’s prohibited to marry foreigners.
    - In 2008, the Gross National Happiness Committee was formed in Bhutan to take care of the people’s inner peace.
    - All the road signs in Bhutan are drawn by hand. Thiumphu, the country’s capital, is the only one in the world that has no traffic lights at all.
    - Bhutanese people love to decorate their homes. They draw birds, animals, and different patterns on the walls, making them look like real-life gingerbread houses.

I am Bhutanese and here are a few things I thought might need some minor corrections
    1. You are provided a local guide. But he or she does not have to be with you all the time. You can ask them to leave you alone and they will especially on thimphu. When traveling to other places these licenced guides are required.
    2. We do import a lot of seasonal vegetables, fruits, rice and meat. But local produce sells at a premium and is always better tasting. There is a goal to be 100% organic though.
    3. There are four airports in the country. But only one international airport in paro.
    4. People are not allowed to keep animals in the basement anymore. It's been like 15 years now. It's not very hygienic.
Also an interesting fact . We use chillies as a vegetable and not as a spice . It's eaten in huge amounts and in all forms. Powdered, dried, boiled and then dried, beaten to a pulp , compacted or just plain raw

We are manipulated to pay mortgage for a piece of land that don't belongs to nobody. The most we have to pay is for making the land ready to build on. That's technically all we're supose to pay.

Eliazar Avanceña no its not. Ask any knowledgeable person and everyone will say Bhutan is not part of India. Do you know politics??!! Every country have relationships with each other, it’s a give and take situation. India’s India and Bhutan is Bhutan. They have know say in whatever Bhutan does. The two countries are friends. Bhutan isn’t the only country that depends on India m, just like India isn’t the only country Bhutan depends on. Why do u thing Kong’s, presidents and Prime Ministers of different countries and have meetings?!!! It’s for relationships building. If we go with ur logic, that means all country depending on India falls under India.
If u have anymore doubts, come at me or u can just google it for a faster information cuz for now I’m going to sleep and can only reply tomorrow. Good night(though I don’t know if it’s night or morning or afternoon or evening 🤣)

Also, I'd be surprised if Bhutan would allow Indians to easily acquire Bhutanese citizenship. Aside from the demographic changes this would cause, Bhutan would be swamped with people in a country with limited land resources this simply wouldn't be feasible. India being home to almost 1/5 of humanity that would be a silly thing for Bhutan to consider. Would make more sense if Bhutan only opened residency to Europeans, because there are only 2/3 the number of Europeans living in all European countries combined compared to India. Of course that's not going to happen either, because Bhutan is concerned primarily with the happiness of it's people and not foreigners.
I'd also be surprised if there were many economic opportunities for foreigners in Bhutan other than in a few limited industries such as tourism, agriculture and mining (assuming the government allows the latter).

But Bhutan does prohibit so many things. Nobody is free to be in love with who they want, no foreigners, no homosexuality. They have to follow traditional rules, wear clothing that is assigned to them. Sounds a lot like a dictatorship, but because they receive all these benefits, free healthcare, land and the ability to grow their own food, the people who live there won't see the controlling aspect. And i actually think in this case that being so strict has created a great place, no chemicals, no pollution, thats amazing! But there also needs to be more acceptance for their people and more freedom allocated to the. Also just curious, is there a jail or prison there? And how many criminals they get or if its a really low percentage

@Delphinium Flower $250? That's also per day? Seriously???
I guess if that kind of law is imposed, Tourism would be limited to only few thousands in this world. FYI (From my place, a round trip to Thailand, including 5-6 days of 3* hotel stay comes under $300)

    • @Jag123rules

@Delphinium Flower i guess you got scammed. Being an Indian, to be precise, northeastern Indian... Bhutan is merely 45 minutes drive from my hometown. Been there like 40-50 times. Never paid that much money in travelling. Maximum i spent was around $100 when i had a trip to Thimphu... which included Gas, food, homestay rent for 5 days and boose too.
