Just after watching the opening ceremony of Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games, I have to say that 13 years later, the opening ceremony of Beijing Olympic Games is still the best one.
I believe Japan could've done much better but cuz of covid it held them back. No other country could have hosted the Olympic better than Japan during this pandemic.
I personally prefer the opening ceremonies for the London Olympics more, but yeah, it was a shame that Tokyo's opening ceremonies wasn't nearly as flashy and over the top as it could have been. At least the inclusion of video game music during the parade of nations was cool. 😓

You know what? That lighting the cauldron part WASN’T on the original plan. The original plan has a Fenghuang (basically a Chinese phoenix, except rarely associated with fire and rebirth) flying into the “nest” that is the stadium and lighting the fire. It was changed because a thrice-cursed (grrrrr!) South Korean broadcaster filmed and aired the rehearsal bit without permission.
2004 Athens Olympic Games Opening Ceremony will remain untouched. No country has come even close to comparing it's opening ceremony to the one in Athens in 2004... Athens set the bar so high that the only time anyone will ever come to beating that ceremony will be the next time the Olympics are hosted in Greece again.
Athens 2004 was the best for me. Just a spectacular show from start to finish. The pool of water mixed with fire still takes my breath away. The parade of statues. The dramatic lighting of the cauldron - Actually having it come down to meet the torchbearer. The design of the stadium. *Beijing 2008 close second. (The Bird's Nest is gorgeous.) *Then London. (The whole introductory scene was phenomenal)
Beijing 2008 hands-down was the best. Loved the Chinese musical instruments; 5,000 years of history. Also loved the small touches of athletes walking over a canvas and painting a painting by the end of the March. Sydney 2000 honorable mention; that was a great show too! Barcelona 1992 had the best lighting of the torch via an archer - nobody beats that!!

I think it should be 3. Australia and Greece had real meaning and depth, they were masterpieces.The British show was kind of disjointed and shallow and trying too hard. I couldn't sit through it.
I really enjoy the history telling part of Britain in the Middle Ages and the industrialization era, with very touching music. I can feel the pride of British actors and audience there in the arena. And 2004 Athens also takes me back to their ancient culture, the whole ceremony is artistic.
The best one has to go to Athens 2004. It was the best by far and I think no other can compare to it. It told Greek history from start to our times. It was so original so Greek 🇬🇷

The feeling of Olympic games returning to their birthplace is something no technology or effects can win..other than that Bejing was the more Star Wars kind of ceremonies that we will all remember (pending for Tokyo 2021)..but Athens was literally creating goosebumbs and hit you in the heart not in the eyes...

The Athens 2004 Opening Ceremony is absolutely top of the list! Whilst all opening ceremonies from across the globe are lovely, no other opening ceremony has been able to showcase to such an incredible and elegant grandeur as what the Greeks did in 2004. Beijing is a close second. The history alone with these two countries can’t be topped - which they integrated into their ceremonies.

I admit that some Chinese companies do not strictly implement the 8-hour work day, but the wages of basic workers with low education level are much higher than university graduates. I know that some projects require uninterrupted 24 hours, but there is a rotation mechanism, if you are not happy with the job you can leave, don’t understand where the force comes from.

Rewatched Beijing 2008 after the Toyko 2021 opening....it is still impressive even 13 years later, executed to perfection! Their vision for space exploration back then has been achieved with the launch of their own space station just last month! During the London 2012 Games, when they combined those forged Olympic rings, with that song playing in the backround, it was one of the most beautiful things I have ever seen and heard.
It was absolutely mesmeric! London had to follow the money and man power of Beijing, which was no easy task, but on a MUCH smaller budget, with pure imagination and ingenuity they managed it, and then some!
For me, Barcelona 1992 should be NUMBER ONE on the list. THE CEREMONIES GAVE THE WORLD A SLEW OF INNOVATIONS that other hosts copied or modified, including but not limited to Beijing 2008. They started commencing the opening ceremonies in the evening. They introduced covering the track and grass field with an alternative material to accentuate the show. They used gigantic figures in their depictions of myths, history, fantasy and other motifs. They introduced the COUNTDOWN to the opening ceremonies. They included a presentation of past Olympiads in chronological order. FINALLY the lighting of the cauldron using a flaming arrow, (simple yet suspenseful and awe-inspiring) was the SINGLE most creative and drama-filled moment in Olympic opening ceremony history. Subsequent hosts were also good, but Barcelona blazed the trail and cracked the barrier WIDE OPEN!!!
2008 Beijing Olympic opening ceremony is no doubt Number 1, thanks to Chinese rich culture and history which Chinese people have been making. The ceremony exactly delivered the concept of harmony.
Beijing Olympics is also my No.1 best Olympics opening ceremony. I was 15 back then. As an overseas Chinese in Thailand, I cried while watching it on TV, it was so amazing, and it made me so proud to be a Chinese, even though I have never been to China.

I admit that some Chinese companies do not strictly implement the 8-hour work day, but the wages of basic workers with low education level are much higher than university graduates. I know that some projects require uninterrupted 24 hours, but there is a rotation mechanism, if you are not happy with the job you can leave, don’t understand where the force comes from.

@@blazinchalice What you don’t know is these Chinese people who were trained intensively for Beijing Olympic opening are extremely proud of themselves as that’s a once in a life time opportunity to show their country’s culture and ingenuity to the world. They don’t think that’s a slavery job at all, on the contrary, that’s a precious memory that they will share with their children and grandchildren happily.

Sochi 2014 had a pretty great opening ceremony. The best for the winter olympics in my opinion.

I know it was the Winter Olympics but Sochi 2014 is my all-time favorite Olympic opening ceremony. I was 13 back then and I still cherish those memories. That ceremony truly created a special place in my heart for the Olympics

Rewatched Beijing 2008 after the Toyko 2021 opening....it is still impressive even 13 years later, executed to perfection! Their vision for space exploration back then has been achieved with the launch of their own space station just last month! Am looking forward to the Beijing 2022 Winter opening, also going to be directed by Zhang Yimou, only he can outdo himself.

Only Athen's 2004 Opening Ceremony trully managed to convey the spirit of the Olympic Games. Perfect in its simplicity and meaningful as well.

During the London 2012 Games, when they combined those forged Olympic rings, with that song playing in the backround, it was one of the most beautiful things I have ever seen and heard.
It was absolutely mesmeric! London had to follow the money and man power of Beijing, which was no easy task, but on a MUCH smaller budget, with pure imagination and ingenuity they managed it, and then some!

THE CEREMONIES GAVE THE WORLD A SLEW OF INNOVATIONS that other hosts copied or modified, including but not limited to Beijing 2008.
They started commencing the opening ceremonies in the evening.
They introduced covering the track and grass field with an alternative material to accentuate the show.
They used gigantic figures in their depictions of myths, history, fantasy and other motifs.
They introduced the COUNTDOWN to the opening ceremonies.
They included a presentation of past Olympiads in chronological order.
FINALLY the lighting of the cauldron using a flaming arrow, (simple yet suspenseful and awe-inspiring) was the SINGLE most creative and drama-filled moment in Olympic opening ceremony history.
Subsequent hosts were also good, but Barcelona blazed the trail and cracked the barrier WIDE OPEN!!!
2008 Beijing Olympic opening ceremony is no doubt Number 1, thanks to Chinese rich culture and history which Chinese people have been making. The ceremony exactly delivered the concept of harmony.

Beijing Olympics is also my No.1 best Olympics opening ceremony. I was 15 back then. As an overseas Chinese in Thailand, I cried while watching it on TV, it was so amazing, and it made me so proud to be a Chinese, even though I have never been to China.
