A good way to hold the primeall powder in the cap is to mix 7 oz. of acetone with 1 tube of Duco Cement. Make sure you shake it up and mix it real well before you use it. I just use an eye dropper and put a couple of drops in each cap. The powder tends to fall out if you just use the acetone alone. And you get enough of the mixture to do thousands of caps. Just remember to mix it real well before each use. Oh and I'm from Maine too. 😀

Yes, that’s really a cool way to do that, that’s awesome that you came up with that. I use clear spray paint, just a fine mist I don’t soak it. I have all my caps out in the tray and then about a foot and a half to 2 feet above it I just lightly spray in the mist settles down on the caps and seals everything and it’s perfect. It’s been great.

The issue is that #10 caps are pistol caps. ESG guidelines call for reduction of pistol
loading supplies. However #11 are still sold. Thanks for the guidance.

I've never had a cap and ball revolver, but when I was a kid I had a Hopkins and Allen .36 underhammer. I made my own nipples out of a small bolt with the same threads as the nipples, and I made them so a .used 22 cb cap shell would fit on them. I lightly squeezed the cb cap shell so it would stay on the nipple. I used a paper punch and punched out 2 cap pistol caps and placed them in the shell. They were large enough they didn't fall out. I fired many shots and didn't by any more percussion caps. I used the cb shells over and over. I had access to a little Unimat lathe I used when drilling the home made nipples, though I imagine it would not be difficult to accurately hand drill them. Don't remember the size drill, it was one of my Dad's and it was in the 1960's. Never had a misfire with them.

I was lucky enough to find a few hundred caps at a local shop a few miles away by accident really. New stock and CCI #11 caps at $8.99 a tin of 100. I grabbed a handful of course. Thank you very much for watching and sharing that amazingly cool story ... that is simply genius!

I think that works very well with the 500 and 550 CCI small pistol primers! And I think it would fire every primer if you would drill a small hole in the hammer and add a small fireing pin made from bicycle spoke cut down short with no more three thirty seconds long protruding and rounded off on the point. This will make sure the anvil in the primer sets off the primer first time it's hit and every time you drop the hammer! Thanks for your great video and knowledge on the tubing and pistol primers. Those pistol primers will have better ignition than percussion caps and be more resistant to water and humidity.

Just ran accross this video today. Two years later, and no relief with the caps yet. But good idea with the tubing and pistol primers. This seems to be a relatively quick method to fabricate that will get people back in the game. the other two you mentioned seem quite tedious.
Sometimes I wonder if I should just purchase conversion cylinders and just shoot my cap and ball revovers as blackpower cartridge guns. 45 Colt is easy to reload, and components readily available.

    • @megatrends
      @megatrends  3 місяці тому

Yes, whatever works for you really. I shot few cylinders today in the .36 caliber using the home made caps with Prime-All and also the small pistol primers. All the Prime-All ones worked great. The pistol primer ones were cumbersome but worked.
I should weld a firing pin on the hammer face, just a short flat nub for the, pistol primers.
If you can get 45 LC and load b
A k powder cartridges in a 44 … maybe do that instead. For sure …. Anyway thanks for watching!

You can dissolve smokeless gunpowder with acetone and use it to seal the powder and keep it in place. It wont add much to the power but the thin nitrocellulose coating will burn up and not plug the nipple like paint or paper will do.

If you were going to do this exclusively to one gun, taking a MIG welder and spot welding for a 1/4 second on the center of the face of the hammer, will give you a nub that will be more firing pin like.

You can harvest the powder from the plastic caps by crushing them gently with long nosed pliers, haven't had one go off doing that yet.. but do them in small batches.... Separate the little paper discs with a fine probe and keep the powder. This can then be used like the "Prime-all" powder in the kits either held with a small dab of very dilute clear nail polish with acetone. You can put paper discs over the powder if you want to. There's enough powder in each 'star' or strip of 8 shots to do two caps...

I prefer prime-all with the aluminum caps, these were not the best solution but did offer a "good enough" option if you can't do either or you wish to save time.I did not experiment with different small pistol primers either.
Could also work on modifying different hammer faces as the pistol primers with the flat stock factory hammer face was the culprit on ones that didn't fire the first time around. Perhaps even welding a small raised bump on the face would strike the primer like a firing pin

  • @lorenray9479

I make many of my own tools. A smaller drill bit or rod pressed thru a small hole will reduce the primer cups made from turkey baster/roaster pan, .oo7 ish. They dish out on firing instead of fragmenting into the action. No chain firing. Prime-all reliability!

For whatever it's worth, it ought to be possible to use Small Rifle primers as well, even Small Rifle Magnum primers; they're the same diameter as Small Pistol and Small Pistol Magnum. The difference between regular and magnum is mainly the thickness and hardness of the primer cup; magnum primers are a little harder and rifle primers are both thicker and harder, with rifle magnum primers the hardest. That can cause misfires due to light strikes if you reload brass cartridges with too hard a primer (the gun's hammer spring or striker spring may lack the power to indent the primer enough to set it off), but won't matter when you use these in a black powder revolver, because you're firing the primer by setting the internal anvil back within the cup, rather than indenting the cup itself.
The other difference between standard and magnum primers is the amount of fire produced -- so if you find your primers are firing but the propelling charge isn't igniting reliably, or you get poor accuracy due to slow ignition (perhaps due to old or damp powder?), stepping up to a hotter primer may improve your ignition or speed up your lock time. This may also help if you load with pellets and get an occasional misfire.

    • @megatrends
      @megatrends  4 місяці тому

Thanks for the info ... the mall pistol primers work well after indenting the cup by applying hammer face pressure before firing, like seating them first. I shot some of these today actually, they worked well.
If I see the rifle primers you mentioned I will check them out if i come across some. Should work theoretically.

I've been struggling to make my aluminum can caps work with either Prime-All or German made caps (hard to find). I've determined the cause to be high pressure causing the cup to blow out before the hot gas stream can enter the flash hole.

Here is more info if you want it - maybe the more info the better?
The primer mix can be mixed wet, this is easier for some people (and more reliably safe than working with dry mix) - a very small tool must be found or made to dip a tiny bit of wet mix and place it in the cap. In the alternative, some people mix it dry and use tweezers to hold a cap which they scoop the dry mix with (since it is very difficult to scoop dry mix and pour it into a cap without it spilling everywhere). After scooping with a cap it is placed in a wooden cap holder (a board with a bunch of small holes in it), then a bit of acetone or alcohol can be added after the dry mix is pressed with a wooden matchstick.
If the caps are not durable enough a bit of hairspray can be added after making the caps. There are other things that work instead of hair spray, such as a solution of gun cotton in alcohol.

Due to the immense increade in cost I purchased a percussion cap die that allows me to make caps from aluminum beverage can material. I can make KClO3 percussion caps very, very cheaply. The cap die will pay for itself after making 600 caps at $10/hundred. Chlorate caps are effective, they produce a lot of fire - but they are corrosive. The caps cost about 1.3 cents each now, this will be reduced to nearly free if I purchase a pound of potassium chlorate and antimony trisulfide. I already have the sulfer. A pound of KClO3 is only $30 or so including shipping and is enough for tens of thousands of caps.

Not much deviance, I use 20 gr of black powder for .36 cal. if I use more i lose accuracy optional primers opr not so I would say not much difference, the primer would have to be pretty weak which does happen sometimes when you get a misfire or squib like fire from a weak cap. The pistol primers have good pop and when they function properly there has been no issues.

Ive seen people use 22 casings cut short but on the black powder rifle nipples which are much bigger than these. The home made percussion caps are made from Prime All, a 22lr reloading kit and just making my own caps to fill with the powder primer. It is actually pretty easy to make the percussion caps from pie plates. I can make about 75 in an hour which includes filling them after mixing the powder.

@@megatrends I watched your videos and others videos and it seems to me that the Homemade caps are not very reliable.
Of course better than nothing but far from ideal.
Also did not like that the Gun has to be crried a certain way to keep the caps from falling off.
Was sure hoping the 22 cases were the answer on the Cap and ball Revolver.
Perhaps a way to use rifle niples on the Cap and ball revolver or a modification of the outside of the existing Nipples to allow fitment of the 22 cases.
I also have extra cylinders that perhaps I could use one of the extra cylinders and then all it would take is the few seconds that it takes to change the cylinders on my Pietta New Army (1858 replica)cap and ball ?
I have been just speculating but will break out a 22 round and cut it off and then see the fit on a nipple then go from there.
