Yesterday I was left stranded by the dreaded KTM oem fuel pump failure, but only 45 miles from home. I ordered the pump and kit from Rottweiler. Thanks for the tips Mario. Always look to your channel for wisdom.

Add me to the list of folks who have been helped by your fuel pump videos. Mine failed at 15,000 miles, while I was 2 hours from home. I was able to have it towed to my brother & sister-in-law's house near-by. Ordered two Quantum's - one to install and one as a traveling spare. Installed the pump pretty easily. Thanks for making it much less intimidating!

Canada calling! Huge thumbs up Mario!
Was only going to replace my filters and came across this video. It made absolute sense to replace the pump before the OEM failed and now I have a spare. I ordered the kit from Quantum on Monday and it was in my mailbox by the time I got home from work Tuesday. In Canadian dollars the whole thing including shipping was $203.00.
On a 2017 1290 SA R the crash bar stays in place with lots of room.
The only thing I would suggest to get are the two pump base O rings in case they rip like the one did on mine. The one that ripped is 3mm X 60mm. They aren’t cheap from KTM. My dealer gave them to me for free since they had a few laying around. $75 otherwise!!
    Thanks again Mario. Ride safe!!

this just happened to my 2016 SAT at 16,200 miles. Started bogging when temps got warm, then cut out entirely. Got the fuel pump failure message. Was also getting a lot of vapor out the tank vent hose. Good news is I already had kit on hand (bought it when I bought the bike @8000 miles after watching this video) :) and plan to rebuild next weekend. Thx Mario, I'll report back.

Dude, thank you so much for this video, I did it (1090 Adv R, 2018). I bought this used from a guy, thought I had done a horrible thing buying it, turns out the gas I got in Black Hills on a pass (I live in Gillette) was bad, really bad. It had dirt and some weird fluid I couldn't figure out, maybe rusty water? Anyways, video was a huge help, thanks man, got the Quantum pump, filter kit and it was a breeze.
The o ring on the pump that mates to the tank, a trick for people who might be running into issues. Use some 3M Silicone o-ring lube NOT GLUE and lube it up like Mario says, when you are putting the pump assembly back into the tank, get the o-ring started, get a screw driver and very lightly help the o ring stay in its grove as you push into the tank. I have had a lot of experience with o rings out in the field where you had no options and it works.

Was able to baby it all the way home. Any heavy throttle it would just cut out. Could have been the filters or the fuel pump. Changed both with the link in your video and all is well. 2 Wheeled....desperate for info
I had to replace the connector on the fuel pump (gear shift side 3 pole connector w/2 wires) that goes into the fuel pump. I used a water proof connector kit by (Looks like Delphi or Adelphi).
    1. Replaced the two pins on male and female connected them directly to a battery (off the bike) to check it before I mounted the tank back completely.
    2. The fuel pump comes on hooked directly to a battery and spins like a top.
    3. I then checked the voltage coming from the bike going into the connector. When I turn on the ignition the voltage appears to go to 13v then immediately goes beck down (I think that is designed that way to prime the pump). I think I can hear the slight "pop" in the fuel pump when I do this when connected to the bikes power instead of just straight battery.
    4. When I connect the fuel pump to the bikes power it wont start (turns over fine and getting electrical to the spark plugs).
    5. When I use starter fluid to check if there is something wrong with the engine the bike starts and of course almost immediately dies. It does a few revolutions and runs out of vapor. I wanted to know If something was wrong somewhere else but it appears not.
    6. I checked the fuse for the pump at the fuse box and its good.
Any ideas? Perhaps the relay? Keep in mind it was running fine before I removed the fuel tanks to do a valve adjustment (using starter fluid to check to make sure the engine was fine so IMO I dont think anything is wrong with the valve adjustment otherwise it wouldnt do much at all regardless of starter fluid or not). I am already on several forums and have yet to have any answers.
Can anyone direct me to the fuel pump relay and how to test it?? Or do anyone else have any other ideas regarding what it might be?? Thanks!!

Great Information, again. I have my fuel tank off and was wondering if it would be more useful to install external fuel filter. I was thinking of visiting a friend in Mexico and was concerned about potential dirty fuel. Any thoughts on that? Question, my 990 fuel pump (I think) makes the “hum” for 2 seconds when I turn the key AND I feel the flow of fuel through the hose when I touch it, however the bike will not start; it just turns and turns. Does my fuel pump need to be replaced?

    • @2WR
      @2WR  11 місяців тому

Tough to say. There are 3 things that make an engine run, fuel, fire, and air. While it could be the fuel pump it at least sounds like the pump it working (need to check it), I’d check my plugs to ensure I’m getting fire.

I went that route on my GSX-S1000 and ordered a Quantum pump. No good. The Quantum pump would keep flowing even after pressure disconnect. Horrible fluctuating idle and the smell of fuel all the time. It worked but these were the symptoms of the Quantum. Ended up returning it and buying an OEM pump. No issues what so ever. Stay away from cheap alternatives. The OEM will last another 40k. The quantum will not and the work needed to replace again will be needed.

Great videos ... a good mix of relevant how to's and ride videos. I myself suffered the dreaded KTM fuel filter issues at 250 miles on my new 1090. 6000 miles later and on a recent trip and luckily only a handful miles from home my 1090 bogged and the Fuel Pump Warning flashed up on my display. I got her home and replaced the pump with the Quantum and a Guglatech filter kit .... bike is running great again and I hope to not have any more filter issues as they advertise. I've tried to be preemptive and run all non-ethanol/treated .... also prefiltering most of the fuel that's ran. I've read that the Fuel Pump Warning is detecting a dead short in the pump, which makes me wonder if the original fuel filter issue over strained the pump?

During my WABDR Sections 3 and 4 bike started to suffocate after 5000 RPM. When you let it sit and cool down, it ran normally for some time. Bike has charcoal canister removed. I did get info system flashing FuelPumpFailure twice. I was able to ride home and make a smaller trip with full range of RPMs a 2 days later but after bike wont start. I change to better battery and nothing. Quantum pump is in order and arriving tomorrow. Want to get bike working since I have signed up to Touratech Rally on this weekend (9/16 - 9/19)

I got the fuel pump and the filters on Tuesday and assembling all parts together was easy. Getting it installed to back tank was a bit more work than I anticipated. After putting gas to the tank it was leaking from the pump. Turns out I did not properly put lubricant to the o-ring and it broke. Luckily local KTM dealer had new o-rings and I got pump installed back without leaks. Bike runs great!

  • @Ray-cv6gc

Are the pumps brushless? Brushes do wear and spring pressure weaken and commutation ceases, on vehicles you can beat on the tank just like a starter to establish a connection. I run some marvel mystery oil to lube the entire fuel system to hope maybe thats helpful.

I headed out about 45 days ago on my most recent trip to Colorado from AZ, and on the way up through Flagstaff with 3 of my buddies and about 30 miles south of Flagstaff, my '16 KTM 1290 SA started behaving like it was running out of gas, and then a message popped on my instrument panel saying my fuel pump needed to be replaced ... CRAP !! I had the bike towed to the local authorized KTM dealer in Flagstaff (GOAZ) and they told me they didn't have any KTM fuel pumps in stock and couldn't get one for 48 hours out of LA ... CRAP, CRAP !! GOAZ called me 45 minutes after the tow truck dropped of my bike and told me the bike was fixed ... hell yeah !! I asked what the problem was and they said that likely after your bike was serviced last, the petcocks valves were not closed / opened properly and it was adjusted in 10 seconds, the "Fuel Pump" error message disappeared, and I was off and running. Yes, I was that guy that asked (sincerely) what the hell is a petcock? With that said, are both petcocks, something that should be checked before having to replace the fuel pump? BTW - Love the suggestion about the Quantum HFP after market fuel pump and assembly. Is it better to buy straight from Quantum like your video shows or Amazon?

    • @2WR
      @2WR  3 роки тому

So this bike has relatively new petcocks on it. I received new ones when I got the new tank last year. It's really a wash whether you buy it the pump direct or off Amazon. That said, if you need one overnighted or overnight early delivery, you need to go direct through Quantum.

@@2WR Thanks ! so I replaced the fuel pump with the Quantum version but I don't think that's my issue. I believe its related to the battery after replacing it I tried starting it, the beast coughed and wheezed a bit then the battery drained after a few attempts??? I was reading in the ADV forum that some KTM ADV owners have had the stock battery go bad after a year. I have neglected mine though never on a tender etc, so after a charge it fired right up. Weird right I then rode it up to our lookout/hang out spot for a test ride and when leaving watched the voltage indicator go down 5 volts when hitting the start button. This also happened after I got the bike towed home. Charged Battery and boom it fired no Fuel Pump failure etc. So I mean it cant hurt that pump has been replaced but going to buy an earth x battery which has superior cranking amps. Also noticing when riding its charging at 13.3-6 volts so it is charging i was thinking is it my reg/rectifier? Anyway I am hoping this cures it, I did not plan on buying a $300 battery but i do not want to be stuck anywhere again. Just had this happer on my 2015 1190
    It only has 6500 miles
Bought it from a UK KTM dealer 2 months ago so they are sending me a new pump
I was going to send the bike back to them but they are a long way from me ( it was the lowest milage one i could find in the UK )
But as it took me about 3 minutes to get the pump out it seemed easier to just swap it myself ( i am a mechanic by trade )
    A couple of things
When i took the pump out there was a fair bit of gungy white sludgy stuff sitting at the bottom of the recess where the pump sits
I cleaned and flushed it all out
There is some discussion that it could be moulding realising agent from when the tank is made .
But also , if you put your hand up the outdide of the side of the tank where the pump sits , there is about a hands width gap to the engine to the side of the tank and then about an inch inside the wall of the tank next to the pump
We all know how much heat these motors kick out , so how hot that bit where the pump sits is , god only knows how hot it's getting the pump
I've ordered some " Cool It " self adhesive silver heat reflective sheets to put on the tank between the engine and the tank .
At some stage in will have the tank off and insulate the whole underside of the tank
    It cant hurt

Thank you very much, Bro! This is really helpful! I have the same bike. I'm traveling a lot on my 2016 ktm 1290 super adventure.( many National Parks in US, Canada and Alaska).I'm just completed 8.500 miles trip.Total I have 25.000 miles on it. And I have similar problems. My fuel pump almost dead .I'm losing power and I have a :"fuel pump failure " on my dash, when the temperature is more than +85F. But dealer has no idea what to do. And told me " Everything is good with your fuel system ". My Instagram: @ruslan_bear_superadventure
