Saw Crosby on Howard Stern.. he said Jon wrote this and sang it at a party (at the Monkeys Peter Torks house).. it was a song to him, she was breaking up within him. He said she sang it TWICE to make sure he got the message! Brilliant.

I truly believe that, like a shaman, she was able to manifest energy (in the form of music and poetry) from the collective unconscious. She was a connection to something that is otherwise indescribable.

It is 2024. 4 days ago I sat about 150 feet from Ms. Mitchell at the Hollywood Bowl. No one on the audience moved around or shouted while she sang. All was respect, love, and gratitude, and many standing ovations. It is wonderful to see her standing 54 years ago so bravely in front of this ambivalent crowd.

I read that Midway was Joni's 'break-up' song to David Crosby, which she sang at Peter Tork's pad in Laurel Canyon, with David and everybody (the Canyon "coyotes") in attendance. That was it, no fuss, no muss. Music can be the best way to communicate the hardest things to say, and Joni was a "radio". Turn her on.

I met you on a midway at a fair last year
And you stood out like a ruby in a black man's ear
You were playin' on the horses
You were playin' on the guitar strings
You were playin' like a devil wearin' wings
Wearin' wings, you looked so grand wearin' wings
Do you tape them to your shoulders just to sing?
Can you fly? I heard you can. Can you fly?
Like an eagle doin' your huntin' from the sky
I followed with the sideshows to another town
And I found you in a trailer on the camping grounds
You were betting on some lover
You were shaking up the dice
And I thought I saw you cheatin' once or twice
Once or twice, I heard your bid once or twice
Were you wonderin', "Was the gamble worth the price?"
Pack it in, I heard you did, pack it in
Was it hard to fold a hand you knew could win?
    So lately you've been hidin'
It was somewhere in the news
And I'm still at these races with my ticket stubs and my blues
And a voice calls out the numbers
    And it sometimes mentions mine
And I feel like I've been workin' overtime
Overtime, I've lost my fire overtime
Always playin' one more hand for one more dime
Slowin' down, I'm gettin' tired, slowin' down
And I envy you the valley that you've found
'Cause I'm midway down the midway
    Slowin' down, down, down, down

I went into Vancouver to see her solo acoustic concert. She brought out James Taylor as a surprise guest. Just a few years ago I found out Joni was trying to protect the environment of this place I lived on a Chinese junk made out of teakwood in the harbor. Because she was my neighbor. I’ve read it’s about Leonard Cohen, and that checks the line about religion, as he dabbled in Scientology for a time.

I read what David Crosby said about this breakup song. He said, "Yes, it was about their breakup and at a party they were both at, Joni sang this song and then sang it again right after ending it - so sang it TWICE to David, at the party! 😥😥

Midway is about her breakup with David Crosby. In fact, he learned of Joni leaving him upon her playing this "new song" in front of him and a collection of mutual friends. And then she played it, again. How brutal is that? Poor David.
