I believe she is the greatest songwriter ever, female or male. Dylan was great, but most of the time he kept a cautious distance from real social issues. Joni transcends greatness. She is very direct in depicting society in everything good or bad about it. She does not just write poetry. She rights poetry that is astute social commentary, such as Woodstock, a song written almost as the events were unfolding. She is a militant poet in many ways.

Her guitar playing is underappreciated. Sure, she doesn't wail screaming blues guitar riffs. However, what she does is so complex and melodic, playing rhythm and melody at the same time with a sound that can only be Joni Mitchell. And the tone of that Martin guitar is excellent. Whenever I tell people that I think Joni Mitchell is one of the best guitar players of all time, I get a lot of heads shaking and comments like, "Well, you've never heard X or Y or Z"... all of whom are blues/rock lead guitarists. They are all excellent and can all play in each other's style. But none of them can play like Joni Mitchell.

Her voice, because what she endured in illness is much lower now and she actually thought that her fans wouldn't like it. Her voices suits her perfectly. Over the years there have been many good/great performers but you will have to dig very deep to find another who is this naturally accomplished. Joni Mitchell stands among giants including Brian Wilson, Gladys Knight, John Lennon, Bob Dylan, Marvin Gaye, Bruce Springsteen, Stevie Wonder. It is an embarrassment of riches. Kudos to her manager and label president David Geffen who essentially popularized California country rock.
Joni is known for her songs and lyrics, but what an accomplished musician and artist. She has shared her genius and the true meaning and value of her music and art with all of us. It is us who are blessed through her talent, grace and authenticity beyond music into heart.
Brandi Carlile is a big part of Joni's life at present. We can thank her for injecting apparent joy and happiness into Joni's life after catastrophic health issues. Good for her.
There has always been such light in her music and art. A wondrous body of work. So many of us grew up entranced by that soaring voice. She helped me stay in touch with how beautiful life can be for 50 years now. Thanks for being so true to yourself Joni Mitchell.
She takes the listener to such cerebral heights... Wow, what a seriously talented & phenomenal human being. As important of a musician as there has ever been. Fortunately for us, she is alive and currently creating her incredible music.
Yes, agree 100%. Legend does not begin to describe her, she has had such a profound influence on other musicians and singers, especially young women. Joni is a national treasure.
Utterly luminous. Even the Prez said "She wrote the soundtrack to our lives". Yes she did. And still continues to grace us with her presence. She is stunning at each and every phase of her life. What a gift her music is .
I fell in love with her all over again watching this. I always wondered where the sadness came from in her songs, but I realize that so much of it came from her relationships. They all filled a bit of her but none could fill her soul enough to keep her from searching for more. Her songs touch me deeply, their joy, their sadness, their humor. My favorite artist.
This BBC concert is probably the best acoustic live concert you can see one girl one guitar and piano with incredible songs from the girl with the voice from the heavens joni mitchell talent as big as the sky. Young up and coming artists should watch this concert its as good as it gets when it comes to one of the greatest artists of our time.
Her voice...such clarity and range. Her phrasing...perfect and intriguing, with such ease in the rise and falls of the notes. She's a wonderful singer and songwriter. This is my first time seeing the video...and I'm so glad that I did!
I'm amazed this was saved in the archives... your words are so well written... I've followed her music since the 60 and grew, knowing she is from Canada. My family is from there ... may her music be shared among man & women kind ... he music resonates toward the world 🌎 ♥️ as she's her honistly with every poem every Melody
Will we ever see such talent again? The beautiful Joni was a mere 26/27 years of age on this outing, the voice of an angel, and a catalogue of music that will never be repeated. She has never really been credited for her guitar playing, but my God, it is faultless. Thanks for posting.
I totally agree with you. Since about the mid 90’s when music lost it’s melodies I quit listening to popular music. I guess that’s what happens when you get old and I am fine with it now. So here’s to melodic music.
What a loving experience to be with you like this and return to our collective past with our hearts open;------------------ willing and filling with reverie of those wonderful times and these beautiful songs that gave us love and comradery in those bright and changing/enlightening times... Yes! A generation of insight and a path of love in the wilderness. Truth and Love...!!!
Pure pleasure watching this now. I grew up with her music and it was so magical and gentle. Compared to the music of many superstars today, Joni was a true lady.
I was there (yes for real) and there's no note of this song that doesn't connect with me in relation with how it felt to be part of that event. I first saw her in '68 and have been madly in love ever since. Along with my family, Joni's voice will be in the chorus at the end of my life.
@@homegown1234 Yep. I found out she wasn't going to be there and decided I wasn't going, either! The fact that I was 16, had no car and lived in Oregon may have a little to do with my decision...
I have always admired this lady. So in 1976 when as a workman on a ranch in Colorado, I walked in on her sitting at the piano just playing around she smile at me and stopped!! I apologized and she said "its ok I was just leaving." I never forgot the sound or her face.
Joni wrote the song book of my life when I was just a young mom, 54 years ago. Her talent bloomed and blossomed over the years as a musician, song writer, performer and an artist. While there may be only too human limits on life, every time I think about the song "Clouds", my dreams remain intact. So heart-breaking to see her go 'thru all of his suffering, but it is inspiring, and heart-warming to watch how she was able to get back up on her feet and perform again. All the more precious when thinking of family/friends who were never able to conquer their limitations. Echoing others, I, too, feel very privileged to have lived 'thru that time period, which seems to be so long ago!
Wow, it’s so rare to see an artist perform an unfinished song such as “All I Want” was at that time. That takes courage, because the song at that time was such a rough draft, compared to the beautifully refined version that it became. I’m also impressed that the overall audio quality was that good, given that it was 50+ years ago. Kudos to BBC.
@@GaZonk100 I’ve seen discussions online that the BBC in that era used AKG C 28, 29, and 30 mics with extension tubes. But I’m sure that if you picked up one today on the vintage market, it would be falling apart!

Joni is known for her songs and lyrics, but what an accomplished musician and artist. She has shared her genius and the true meaning and value of her music and art with all of us. It is us who are blessed through her talent, grace and authenticity beyond music into heart.
Love you brother..I have a fatal type of dementia..thankfully it is quick..Joni is playing in my home daily...Peace
No other artist brings tranquility , emotions , and peace simultaneously 💕🥰
Joni is the most creative songwriter with her lyrics. Heavenly voice too! Love her so much!
How many of that audience felt as lucky and privileged as they were to be there that magical night?
1970...I was 10 but I do remember her !! Unbelievable....Brandi Carlile is following in Joni's footsteps!!
Brandi Carlile is a big part of Joni's life at present. We can thank her for injecting apparent joy and happiness into Joni's life after catastrophic health issues. Good for her.
Joni's rendition of Woodstock is Absolutely Fabulous ♥️ always will be my favourite 🌺
Words are so inadequate where Joni is concerned. Tears in awe of timeless beauty suffice
More than 50 years later her songs still bring tears to my eyes, due to their sheer stunning beauty.
There has always been such light in her music and art. A wondrous body of work. So many of us grew up entranced by that soaring voice. She helped me stay in touch with how beautiful life can be for 50 years now. Thanks for being so true to yourself Joni Mitchell.
So much talent she can entertain an audience completely solo. An amazing musician that we were all blessed to grow up hearing all the time.
Not many can do it for sure!
She had the voice with the clarity of a bell, the power of a trumpet and the beauty of an angel.
Her talent can't be overestimated. One of the true guiding lights in music.
Utterly luminous. Even the Prez said "She wrote the soundtrack to our lives". Yes she did. And still continues to grace us with her presence. She is stunning at each and every phase of her life. What a gift her music is .
whoever posted this, thank you so very.very much.
This is my assembly and sound mixing work ;)
What an incredibly imaginative poet, singer, and performer. There's never been anyone else like Joni.
Can’t hear her sing without wanting to cry. Stunning talent.
get some meds you halfwit. or some hookers or blow. pathetic.
I adore that woman. That's all, everything else has been said. How beautiful.
Picks a mean guitar as well!
Joni and Joan Baez have the most unique voices. Able to hit notes impossible for most singers. True talent indeed.
The Diamonds and Rust album by Joan Baez features Joni Mitchell on the track Dida very short almost no lyrics but stunning
Voices that didn’t need odious ‘auto tune’.
She is the only singer who can make me cry.
Joni Mitchell, the sirene of the Sixties.
Such a sweet voice, she is my all time favorite vocalist.
First time I heard 'Help Me' I was in love. Still am. Special lady. ❤
she is amazing, unique, from another world
and we call it Canada 😉
Joni is a national treasure!
Such a rare artistic talent on so many levels: musical, painting, poetry. Although she would deny it, she was a quintessential hippie, in her time.
Pure pleasure watching this now. I grew up with her music and it was so magical and gentle. Compared to the music of many superstars today, Joni was a true lady.
just absolutely wonderful in every respect .... love Joni. !!
She truly is a notch above everyone else. This version of "Woodstock" is just amazing. What vocals!
Was it Crosby who said "she's the best of us."?
Beauty is Joni is music!
Many notches.
She WROTE “Woodstock”
The best version is hers. It’s her song.
The only boomer who ever admitted to not being at Woodstock. And she wrote the damn song.
Lmao
Interesting to learn of not attending Woodstock- which is fine since I wasn't there either.
Magnificent video! Very intimate camera work what a lovely beautiful woman!
There is much more to the songs she is singing then what may think , just wonderful ....a pleasure to listen again....
I have always admired this lady. So in 1976 when as a workman on a ranch in Colorado, I walked in on her sitting at the piano just playing around she smile at me and stopped!! I apologized and she said "its ok I was just leaving." I never forgot the sound or her face.
What an amazing document. It’s hard to put my admiration for her into words.
If there could only be ten musical geniuses in a hall of fame, she would be in there.
@@raycarter4030I’d go Top 5 songwriters of the last century!
She ravishes my heart....touches my soul.......Music has its Queen
I'm "hippie-breed", so I don't even recall a World without Joni in it.
My first girlfriend, the Love of my Life, agreed...
She brings tears to my eyes every time without fail. Her depth of emotion in her songwriting is incredible.
How on earth can someone be this talented?
It’s a legit question, and I confess I have no answer.
48 in Shanghai, I fell in love with her one year ago. Woodstock was the 1st song I heard. Amazing artist, poet and angel voice
Kudos to BBC.
agree - and I want to know what brand that mic is
@@GaZonk100 I’ve seen discussions online that the BBC in that era used AKG C 28, 29, and 30 mics with extension tubes. But I’m sure that if you picked up one today on the vintage market, it would be falling apart!
It helps that it is a full analog performance!
❤❤❤
KUDOS TO BBC. I love that comment, public radio and TV are a vital way of keeping the arts alive.
My God, what a performance, what a quality of sound and picture, too...❤
A real musician with comprehensive knowledge of rhythm, harmony, melody. Probably my favourite singer, (along with Kurt Elling) for her masterful control, range and so musical vibrato. Extraordinary song writer and amazing poet. I always have and always will adore her.
Joni has the innocence of a child. She truly enjoys music and having fun creating it.
What a treasure she is.
This performance of Woodstock blows me away over and over
Where has all the time gone?
This lovely lady is now 80 years old ... it just does not seem possible
The voice of an angel.
i had the rare privilege of meeting Henry Lewy , he was the sound engineer for joni mitchell's early music . he gave me a recording of an interview with her . she is as interesting a speaker as she is a musician.
Wow! Joni at the peak of her powers, at least in this phase of her career. Amazing to see this.
