  • This is Joni Mitchell singing and playing "Both Sides Now" and (at 3:50) "The Circle Game" in 1968 on CBC television show "The Way It Is".
I may be breaking copyright (this video was found in the CBC archives), but I thought it was a great shame that this video was not on UA-cam. You can also find this video at: archives.cbc.ca...

at the tender age of 58 I have just brought my 1st Joni Mitchell album, and have fallen in love with this woman, how I managed to get by, for so many years without ,listening to her music I'll never know?

“You don’t really understand human nature unless you know why a child on a merry-go-round will wave at his parents every time around - and why his parents will always wave back.”
    - William D. Tammeu.”
I love this image. It’s a snapshot of kids growing up and parents letting go.
The child does something daring. In this case, it’s straddling a painted pony and enduring a cacophony of garish colors and noise. They’re no longer holding onto dad’s strong hand or mom’s secure apron strings. Suddenly, they are whooshed out of sight. They’re gone. On their own.
But what happens on each revolution? As they come full circle, they look for you and loosen their grip with one hand just long enough to wave with delight.
The only reason a small child has such courage is because they know you will be there, just in case they need to be rescued. Seeing you - standing firm at every revolution - provides the exact security they need. And it confirms the heart connection you need. The exuberant wave is not hello or good-bye, it’s saying, “We’re in this together.”
Remember the carousel. Embrace that image when your children do anything daring. Kindergarten. Their first date. Their first job. College. The mission field. The military. Be there to send them off and welcome them back. And stand firm every minute in between.

Listening to her feels as though we were all children learning about life from her. This is the stuff that changes people's hearts and minds, and pushes society to a better place - one mind at a time. Who could ever come close? Someone who creates the most original piano, guitar, and dulcimer arrangements, puts poetry of that caliber on top the music, delivers it with that beautiful voice and her impeccable mastery of the instruments. And she produced her own albums, which at that time she was doing one album every year - all of them beyond brilliant. And she calls herself a painter first. And to top it off, she's beautiful. We are simply lucky to be able to learn from her and to count her among the living at this time.

Joni is my late Brother's daughter's name. After Joni Mitchell. Rae, her middle name, after Bonnie Raitt. We were teenagers back in the late 60's early 70's.
Joni was always the top. Still is.
Listening to this song, now that I'm 59, means so much more than it did back then.
    Reality . . .

I was about 19 when her first album came out, and I can tell you now that I had a massive crush on JM. I was in awe of her sensibility, her intricately crafted, content-filled songs, her guitar playing, her captivating voice, and of course her beauty. The crush is gone, but when I run across videos like this, especially those of the time just before she emerged on the scene in the US, it reminds me again how I was in absolute awe, thrall really, of this singular woman and artist, and her art.

It's a good thing a lot of her early stuff - and later stuff, too - was on the CBC. They'll take care of it and won't exploit it. They respect her, she knows that, and that's why she grants interviews to them. I don't think people have to worry about copyright as long as the CBC logo is shown.

Mesmerizing and hypnotic. She has the power to take you along on the journey with her. Troubadour, Shaman, Seer, Poet, Wizard, Mentor, Psychopomp, etc. Of course, true individuals like this only come along once or twice in a generation and those of us with ears will listen and actually hear and those without, won't.

I grew up with her music along with James Taylor, Carole King, Carly Simon, Bob Dylan, and Donavan and even John Denver, Rod Stewart and Kris Kristofferson. As I grew older I left them behind for bands like Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, the Beatles, the Stones, Lynard Skynard, and of course Led Zeppelin.and all the others in between like Matchbox Twenty, Goo Goo Dolls , Stevie Nicks with her band and so many others. Now that I am a Senior Citizen, I still enjoy their music but for the last 30 years of my life I have fallen in love with Christian Bands like Third Day, Michael W Smith, Casting Crowns and the list keeps growing as do I.

You can see the full intellectuallity of Joni by watching her guitar playing: once up from down, then down from up. She is such a beautiful person, that she even plays her guitar from every direction is useful to her. -- Hans Rosenthal (A.H.R.D.) PS: I am talking about her left hand finger(s) picking.

Hey Victor, Well it's still posted 8 yrs. later with over 363K views and curiously only 1K+ likes (maybe it's the video quality or no color or it's only 2 songs or whatever, some are too picky - it certainly can't be the performance, songs or audio quality) and amazingly there are 26 unexplainable dislikes - in case you haven't checked. These early videos in grainy black and white and noisy audio are treasures not to be missed when the performer is of the quality and stature of an iconic tour de force that was and is Joni Mitchell. Thanks for having posted this gold.

Oh, GPA! I'm going to tell my 'tone deaf' mother, who loves this song, this!. We played this at my brother David's memorial last year (he was only 40). Mom insisted it be included. I used to sing and play this on my guitar, as a teen, when David was little.

I wonder if years from now people will watch videos like these and be as amazed and touched as I am. For now it seems like most people lost their ability to appreciate these treasures. This is one hellOf a performance. She’s just amazing.

I read that she had her own distinctive tuning of her guitars and dulcimer to accommodate injury to her hands from polio. She passed the days in hospital by singing.

You're part of the soundtrack of my life (in good company: Bach, Kirsty MacColl, Declan O'Rourke). I'm deeply grateful for the beauty you've given in song and attitude. You've been a huge benefit to me. Thank you. Thank you. Gassho.

Sometimes i feel that the flower generation from which Joni, and myself, is from tasted, at least for a moment, paradise. They had the summer of love and Woodstock and as she says from her song of the same name "we've got to get back to the garden." However the taste was fleeting. AS Pink Floyd said, when i was a child i had a fleeting glimpse, outside the corner of my i eye. i turned to look but it was gone. The child has grown the dream has gone . . .now i think we are all left with a deep longing and sadness.

I’m baffled by the people that gave thumbs down? What were they expecting, a Beatles concert from
1971? It did say Joni Mitchell? Or did it say, “Beatles never before seen”
