One of Joni MItchell's lesser-known songs from Taming the Tiger, performed here on acoustic guitar in the original tuning: DACFGC or D73525, from The Complete Joni Mitchell So Far songbook.

Urge for Going
Переглядів 266 років тому
I've decided to systematically work through the entire Joni Mitchell catalog, not necessarily in chronological order but in different tuning families. Some of the songs will be things I've previously posted, but I'm hoping to improve on those and pick up songs I overlooked along the way. One of the few songs she wrote in standard tuning, "Urge for Going" was recorded by a number of folks, most ...
Court and Spark

Cover of Joni Mitchell's "Court and Spark" with a little Laura Nyro in mind at the keyboard. Enjoy.
Dog Eat Dog (Joni Mitchell)

Piano arrangement of the title track off Mitchell's criminally derided masterpiece, Dog Eat Dog. Seemed especially appropriate at this particular moment in history. Also I have no idea what's up with the sound.

Harry's House / Jericho
Переглядів 1927 років тому
My playing around with Joni Mitchell's "Harry's House" from The Hissing of Summer Lawns with "Jericho" from Don Juan's Reckless Daughter instead of Lambet, Hendrix, and Ross' "Centerpiece," mainly because the two songs play off one another in interesting ways and, conveniently, are in the same tuning. Apologies for the crappy sound quality, but I'm working with pretty low-fi equipment :)
Blue

My first draft of an arrangement of "Blue" that tries to draw out some of the Impressionistic elements.
Tangle Up in Blue (Bob Dylan)
Переглядів 177 років тому
Arrangement of Tangled Up in Blue using an open tuning, so kind of Dylan Meets Joni Mitchell. Made some lyric changes (which to some folks will be sacrilegious) to reflect a same-sex situation, and I flubbed a lyric. Oh well. Close enough for folk, i guess :)
For the Roses (Joni Mitchell)

Now We Both Know We Can't Be Friends (revisited)
It is 2024. 4 days ago I sat about 150 feet from Ms. Mitchell at the Hollywood Bowl. No one on the audience moved around or shouted while she sang. All was respect, love, and gratitude, and many standing ovations. It is wonderful to see her standing 54 years ago so bravely in front of this ambivalent crowd.
Kind of made me appreciate the album more. Although, Secret Place is still kind of dull. A Bird That Whistles is a stroke of genius though.
She and Stills have a similar stringed instrument and singing voice acumen. An emotional person who sings about human relations and the positive aspects rather than the negative that most artists project. The best of the human condition shines through her music and personality. It's too bad that more performers could not find the courage.
This is great, wish the album sounded like 3 Great' here. The part of Paprika Plains she plays here is messier than the album.
More familiar with Bonnie's version. Wonder who wrote it?
Joni. It's on her second album. Bonnie's came later
❤Isle of Wight I think beautiful performance, 1970.
Beautiful singing, storytelling, Thank you for taking us back to this monumental time, before we lost our privacy xxx
I heard that this was a break up song or something and wanted to listen but I can’t make it through it 😬
❤❤❤❤

You don’t learn being a murderer, either 🤷
Not sure what this is in reference to but it seems unrelated.
The sadness about this perfomance was it was interrupted by a protestor who wanted " free music ! How ironic she wrote a song called For free !
What an amazing artist...so real and special and gifted.
I’ve just recently went down the Joni Mitchell rabbit hole and I’ve just been in awe ever since!
Terrific sound quality for such an old piece of film, felt as though I was on the stage next to her!
Would love an uncompressed download of this cassette rip! These are my favorite versions of these 3 songs.
I'm hoping that these appear on the Geffen years archives box! along with other goodies that we don't know about!
What an exceptional man. I still miss him.
Beautiful gorgeous songs with the deepest of lyrics from a time already gone. Still we can live it. And believe it. We can love it or leave it. But we surly must appreciate it. Appreciate you Joni Mitchell. Appreciate you. ❤
Correction to everyone : This is her break up song to David Crosby.
Something to cherish.
Crosby was such an ass.
So this was the song that she sang in the company of friends( at Peter York’s house) & the man she was breaking up with . From what I can work out, he was being repeatedly unfaithful,… & she had tired of that…C’est la vie ?
Beautiful song cleverly wrote, truly a fantastic ĺyricist! 😊
a genius artist ...my favorite for sure
This is, for me, the music that transcends its time and place. Speaks to the part of me that I only suspect of myself. Amazing
David Crosby recounted the “hysterically funny” moment Joni Mitchell broke up with him via a song she’d written for the occasion. The pair briefly dated around 1967, and both of their careers benefited from each others’ influence. But as Mitchell wrote in her song “That Song About the Midway” (which ended up in on 1969's Clouds LP), she eventually got tired of his behavior and wanted to move on. One night, among friends at the home of the Monkees’ Peter Tork, she delivered her breakup message. “She came in and she was kind of different,” Crosby told Howard Stern on SiriusXM (July2021). “She's like, 'I've got a new song,' and we were all there, and we all said, 'Oh, fantastic, a new Joni song!' And she starts to sing it, and it's plainly a goodbye to me. And then she sang it again in case I didn't get it the first time - unbelievable! Everybody in the room was going, 'Oh.' Everybody. ... It's hysterically funny.” ultimateclassicrock.com/joni-mitchell-dumped-david-crosby/?
I agree. We love Joni Mitchell
One of the most magnificent artists of the 20th century.
What show is this from? Can you imagine playing a solo acoustic song to that many people now a a days? They’d talk right over her
Isle of wight and people DID talk right over her. This is the show where she had to stop her set and scold the audience for being rude. Has nothing to do with today or yesterday.
I’m a lifelong Joni fan and I’ve never heard these two songs! How is that possible? Well, it’s because she has been spewing masterpieces all her career. Small wonder that I’ve missed a few.
Where was this?
Saw Crosby on Howard Stern.. he said Jon wrote this and sang it at a party (at the Monkeys Peter Torks house).. it was a song to him, she was breaking up within him. He said she sang it TWICE to make sure he got the message! Brilliant.
maybe i will just go read the lyrics. lol
I am seventy and love music from the 60s, 70s and beyond. I heard David say that Joni was a better songwriter than Bob Dylan. I have never been able to stand her voice.
Joan i can’t you save us from the newly repressed hot wired fake control Insufferable whirled of today it’s so banal and horrifying where are your words sylvan lass?
Like I’ve been saying lately the 60s generation is dropping like flies so I better say this before it’s too late. I was living in a place in British Columbia 1969 or so. Called sechelt. I went into Vancouver to see her solo acoustic concert. She brought out James Taylor as a surprise guest. Just a few years ago I found out Joni was trying to protect the environment of this place I lived on a Chinese junk made out of teakwood in the harbor. Because she was my neighbor. But I didn’t know it at the time because she didn’t want the locals to know she was there. TBC…
Her voice is always so captivating.
Bonnie Raitts version is so much better. It is the song that is the marvel. And that is all Joni.
If someone were to breakup with me through this song I would be devastated, and at the same time eternally in awe of her. RIP David Crosby.
Great
I look at these old videos from when I was just a pup. The artists look real, not plastic. Their teeth aren't perfect, they aren't plastered with makeup, their breasts are real... so are their noses and asses. But they are more beautiful than anyone today: just open your ears, and open your minds.
Awwww. I still miss and love you, Michael!!!! Even after all these years later. Seeing you and Barry marching was awesome!!! What a little gem.
Does anyone know where this was recorded?
Isle of Wight 1970
She has written a lot of my favorite songs, Bonnie Raitt sings this so beautifully
Isle Of Wight Festival 1970. At one point she got indignant with the audience and told them to give her some respect. This whole festival was a disaster, you can see all about it (including that clip) in the excellent documentary "Message To Love". Kinda like if Woodstock and Altamont had a baby!
Thank you God for borning me in ‘62. Utterly blessed generation we were to have such extraordinary artists to listen to.. and the technology today to go right back there. I wept from 12,000 miles away when I saw Joni perform on stage last year. Tears of joy, and tears of gratitude, to hear you sing on a stage again. Thank you Joni.
Borning you! Really?🤔🤣You Idiot!
I thank myself for exploring Joni's music and falling in love with it. One of the handful good choices I made in my short, troubled life.
Wonderful! But even better now that I've learned it was her David Crosby break-up song.
David Crosby never forgot this song. So memorable for David . Great song it is. :)
