Messed up but that's a common story with young kids. It's why I would never want my kids(if I had any) to drive until they're 25 and would rather live in a place with good public transport. It's the hormones at that era that make the kids adrenaline junkie nuts. The fact that the MSRP adjusted for inflation is $32k is insane. I think when we complain about new car prices it’s mostly inflation. 32k these days is the MSRP of a GTI, GR86 or civic Si. It goes without saying that all those are vastly better cars in every way, even with possible dealer markups the value is vastly better.

The Fast and the Furious and Need for Speed left such an impression on me, I bought a 2003 200k+ 350Z (uncle bought it new and daily drove it for 20 years). Super clean and super stock, still. Also has a pretty cool history. It was the FIRST one sold in NC back they first came out in 2002. So my dream car is also technically a piece of automotive history. Pretty sweet
I had one with the 2.0 engine, 2005. It was my (well technically my ex’s but we bought it together) first car and I regret nothing. It looked nice, the red color (the darker one, the light is kinda ugly) was very pretty. Nothing major ever broke in 6 years, she still drives it now. And it was surprisingly practical. I even used it to transport wood boards for my woodworking hobby, lol. Can’t do that with ls430 that I drive now. The Hyundai fit a lot of stuff when we moved apartments, and with seats unfolded three people could semi-uncomfortably sit in the back. It accelerated well enough for driving in the city but struggled outside. Driving over 120 km/h was very noisy. The stuff about not being able to afford anything else is quite on point though, we bought it because she found it cool looking and it was cheap. I think there are far worse choices for a car for the price. Glad we bought this one then.
I've got the 2.7 with the 6 speed manual.. and it doesn't seem to have any problems getting up to illegal speeds and beyond. Guess that's the main difference between the 2.0 and 2.7, then. Also I notice that most people who complain about the Tiburon being sluggish will have driven a 2.0 automatic. The auto gearbox on these wasn't great. The 6 speed isn't superb, by any means, but it does its job.

@@twotailedavenger Yes it was a gensis coupe. Hardly the weridest product car placement in that show as they heavily featured a freaking saab 9-3 vert in the earlier seasons. The Show is actually one of my personal faves but I digress.
Aw man I had an '03 Tiburon GT 5-speed manual at the age of 19. That car was a huge step up from my '93 Saturn SL2 lol I did a lot of the same mods. Euro tail lights, blue interior footwell lights, aftermarket radio, subwoofer and amp, and can't forget the aftermarket white gauges.
I had the 4-cylinder model and raced it at my local circle track and it was a very competitive and honestly reliable car! I ran a Tiburon for 4 seasons, the first 2 were in a car with pretty severe frame damage (the previous owner didn't have it insured and crashed it into a stump), and then after running that for 2 seasons, I bought a straight Tiburon with a blown motor and rebuilt the block from my old car and put it in the fresh body, ran it for a season, and then flipped it and it never ran quite right after that.

My buddy had one of these around 2011. He got it at a junk yard with no motor. Custom two tone paint. He threw a new V6 in it and it was great. He used to fold the seats down and camp in the back!
This was my first car. Bought it 12 years ago, 5th owner, 120k miles, 5-speed manual. It now has 240k miles and is on its second engine but everything else is original. I have very positive feelings about this car. Hung out with and went places with my friends in it, went on dates with my girlfriend (now wife) in it, loaned it to a friend when he needed a car. Always got questions about it because nobody really knew what it was. Planning on keeping it.
I bought a brand new Elantra GT 5MT back in 2004. 1. For what it was, it was a great car. Drove it for 10 years as my daily and never had any major issues. I thought the build quality was pretty good and it was reliable. Paid just under $14 out the door after rebates etc. 2. I had KDM "Avante" badges (Korean Elantra) on it with Loden emblems to replace the Hyundai emblem. NO ONE knew what the car was! Crazy to think that was 20 years ago.
Finally As someone who loves this chassis platform illogically, anything, including roasts, i appreciate. The manual gearbox and the 07/08 version has its own quirks to roast too if you ever do another one.
If i had a dollar for everytime someone talks about the Tiburons shortcomings rather than what it does do right, I would be rich. Tiburon is 1. Very reliable. I own two. Both 6 speed manuals. 2. The v6 with a proper exhaust sounds better than most v6 sports cars that are way better i.e. 350z/370z. And 3. Tuning potential rivals our favorite nissans, toyota, or even some hondas. Cars take boost mods very well. 4. It does look very very good. 5. May not be some toyota celica or acura rsx its still a fun car to drive. I prefer to drive my Hyundai Tiburon over my 2015 Scion FR-S i used to have.
I rather liked the Tiburon. It really felt like Hyundai TRIED with this car when you compare it to what came before. No, the Delta engine isn't particularly powerful, but after working on one, I think they're smartly engineered. The upper plenum covering the rear cylinder bank isn't great, but they weren't the only ones guilty of that, to be fair, and they're easy enough to service for a FWD V6. Even the timing belt is surprisingly easy.
Tiburons are actually pretty decent for what they are, what their price-point was. Comparing it to something more expensive is just taking a shit on an otherwise good car, like if you compare apples to oranges you'll always get the kind of result you are looking for. Having owned and driven one that felt like a new car 200k km in I'm going to call bad faith on this kind of bullshit. Edit: ofc mine was actually Korean built, Americans are known to be unable to build quality cars.
I don't know.... I've had my Tiburon for almost 20 years now. You've got to place it with it's contemporaries though.... the Tiburon went up against cars like the Neon, the Sunfire, the Cavalier/Cobalt.... you know, the cheaper sports coupes. It was outclassed by the Acura RSX, the Mitsubishi Eclipse or the Toyota Celica. The Tiburon couldn't hold a candle to those cars in price, power, equipment or handling capability. But where I think the Tiburon beat them ALL was in styling. There's a rumor that Hyundai approached Pininfarina and you can't help but notice some resemblance to a Ferrari 599. So, a stylish little sports coupe that smacks of Italian design, with a peppy little V6 and an (available) lovely little 6-speed gearbox?? For around $20,000??? How is this a bad thing??? Yes, the car is pretty much the slowest out of them all and I've always joked the V6 has the power of a four; the smoothness of a six but the thirst of an eight. Equip a Tib with some decent rubber and it's like a go-cart with heated, leather seats. Richard Hammond reviewed and LOVED a Tiburon he had and James May coined the jokey phrase about driving slow cars fast. The Tiburon embodies that. These cars are a hoot to toss around corners at nearly illegal speeds. The lap them up and ask for more. They are comfortable, they are adorably handsome little cars and very useful with the big hatch and the folding seats. I famously fit 21 mid-tower PC's in mine when I worked in I.T. It's a shame Hyundai, or even the public at large.... didn't put much faith in these cars. If they'd had come with 200-225 horsepowers and RWD.... they'd have sold a million of them. They would have kicked off the RWD revolution. I know there was talk of an AWD version but that was never to be. There was also a convertible version on the horizon but that too.... never came to fruition. These cars did not sell very well and Hyundai didn't want to invest in a car that didn't sell well. The Genesis was a much better vehicle all around, but I didn't like it's styling anywhere near as much and the Veloster's styling literally made me wretch. Disgustingly unattractive little crapboxes.

My first car was a 05 Buick Century from my Grandmother, I crashed it the day after I graduated high school. Somehow my mother trusted me enough to find a used Hyundai Tiburon looking on used car websites, and we went and got it. That car, as slow as it really was and as lame as it really was, was amazing to 17 year old me and I thought I had a super badass car. It is the car that got me into cars. I remember many nights spent in that car driving friends around, doing dumb stuff like racing each other, and much more. I will miss you, Tiburon. Thank you RCR, not just for all the videos over the years, but this one especially for me. Your commentary is oddly and specifically perfect.
That auto 4 Speed really killing the power of that V6. Theses with the manual 6 speed are fun cars. But they are all fone in the rusted belt. Still remember the first generation wirh the stickers on the lower doors that said "suspention by porsche" 😂
I always liked the looks of the Tiburon. When Hyundai made the Genesis coupe, I felt like it was the spiritual successor to this car. I liked that one, too. But the timing was never right for me to try buying either car. That’s probably a good thing. ;-)
It's a beautiful and classy looking car compared to the older Tiburon. The older Tiburon looked like an Acura Integra (4 round lights) that was born of an alcoholic mother. Around that time I bought a Scion tC. It was a steal for around $16,000. 17" alloys, 4 wheel disc/abs, dual glass roof, mp3 (woohoo) player and the Camry motor. It was a good car. After the warranty expired I added a turbo and was easily making 270 hp to the wheels. I then got married and needed a family car so I sold it for an SUV. Great times.
I had a 2006 2.0L 4cyl with the 5 speed, which I bought used for $7k cash. I was about to sign paperwork to buy a new 2011 KIA forte, but thankfully I came to my senses. That Tiburon got me through college +2 years, only ever had regular maintenance. It wasn't fast but it never left me stranded and I sold it 6 years later for $5k.
This is one of my favorite cars tbh . I have a soft spot for these cars, so much so that I turboed my v6 lol . There's a big hidden culture behind them . Even tho most owners do exactly what you described in this video. They are always my favorite. But I get why some people don't like them
OMG I waited so long for Mr. Regular to finally review a Tiburon. Here in europe they are simply called the "Coupe". This was (and still is) my only car. Great thing. Yes, they are very slow, but gosh, they are good looking and so reliable. In my four years of onership, I only had to replace the brakes and the clutch. The best thing about it, is the huge ass trunk. As I always say "its either the most boring sports car, or the most ecxiting grocery getter"
@@Dankcatvacs the 2.7 6 speed manual. gets 6.5-7 l/100 km on the highway, about 8.5-9/100 km on regular low speed roads and around 15/100 the way I drive it around the city. Yes, I usually rip it up to speed. The engine spends most of it time at or above 3000 RPM.
I will say, i drove a 2005 sonata with the 2.7L V6 as my first car. Got it as the second owner in 2016. It lasted until last fall, and rust was the killer. The motor had 206k and was still going strong, original trans and motor. Hyundai might of been untested at that point in the 2000s, but that engine was a trooper.
Every time I see one of those I think of the twin engine Tiburon that won the burnout competition at the Sport Compact Car Magazine's Tuner Competition one year. They put one engine in drive and the other in reverse and spun in circles. (IIRC that was the only event it one) edit: KMFDM mentioned
Jokes aside, this is from the era where Hyundai put out their most reliable ICE engines and that V6 was putting out the same power they are still putting out with the help of GDI and turbos....and getting the same MPGs. My 1.6T GDI would get 23mpg high side of average.
AFAIK that V6 liked to spin a bearing, but the people who drove them might've contributed to it. I have not heard a single bad word about 2.0's though.
Someone had to compete with the Mercury Cougar at the time..... Hyundai Tiburon, the original baby shark...... do do do Making Scion TC owners proud since 2001
Fantastic review as always. Your "the official car of" and "for the person who" examples were hilarious. Listening to this brought back so much nostalgia. I was 19 in 2006 playing BLACK for the original Xbox and watching Tokyo Drift and Miami Vice (with Jamie Foxx) I remember the Tiburon and thought it was interesting.
I had a Tuscani edition '06 Tiburon with the v6 and 6-speed. It was my favorite car I've ever owned (even ahead of my 92 Civic Hatch) and I honestly couldn't tell you why. It was just... fun. Plus there weren't many around northern VT and with the Tuscani emblems people didn't really know what it was so it had a bit of mystery around it. I hated to get rid of it but I moved house and the clutch was gone and I just couldn't afford to fix it at that point in my life. Years later I finally scratched the itch left behind by getting rid of the Tiburon with a 2015 Genesis Coupe Ultimate that is everything I want in a fun weekender.
Props for maintaining and improving/rebuilding this car this long. Kind of surprised that with the engine rebuild and interior work done, the slushbox didn't hit the bin in favour of a stick, which would help wake up that sleepy six at least a bit, and at least give the sense of more engagement.
When I worked at my church. My coworker drove one of these. I borrowed one day to run errands. Fun little car. A bit cramped and God awful blindspots. But it was fun. She eventually replaced it with an Outback. 😊
This was straight up dis respect to the tiburon. I had one in my 20s great car. Bought an old o8 in my 40s keep it stock, and the car is decent for what it is.
They were also built on the same platform as a third gen Elantra with comfort tuned suspension, so yeah, econobox in a flashy suit. Not to mention the Genesis Coupe being its spiritual design successor, as well. Too bad it’s a bum nostalgia trip for you, because it’s totally different to all of us who own a used one today. Very nice little coupe that makes some cool engines noises. No one reasonable is pretending it’s a fast car, imo. Just something with a bit of street cred. But then again, there’s not much point in trying to change a person’s view when they permanently wear Crash Bandicoot-tinted glasses. Keep em coming Mr. Regular.
2007-2008 years which were the last years of the Tiburon were the best looking regarding the front end. Rear ends and everything else was the same pretty much.
Brother had a previous-gen 99’ and I had a 2000 Elantra. These were honestly not bad little cars. Never had reliability issues, and that Tibby was a ball.

Messed up but that's a common story with young kids. It's why I would never want my kids(if I had any) to drive until they're 25 and would rather live in a place with good public transport. It's the hormones at that era that make the kids adrenaline junkie nuts. I can tell you from experience that the only times I was close to death was while in a car and there were multiple close calls and vehicular damage that kept getting worse and worse till I managed to total a car.
@@SI0AXAgreed but maybe 20. Depends on the kid.
I'm 23 now and I can't even handle riding with my dad. I drive like a Grandpa in a old Buick. He drives like a crazy man.
My buddy was a awful reckless driver a few years ago but he is pretty chill and relaxed now. I trust him more than my dad. My dad hasn't been in any wrecks my whole life. But he is just so aggressive.
But you can't restrict driving to much. The gotta learn one way or another. I couldn't drive for a month because of a seizure and it was awful. Any place with public transportation will be super expensive. Driving is a requirement in this country.
@@SI0AX you got that right. Got a motorcycle when I was 19 and crashed trying to be a wannabe Valentino rossi. Now that I'm 27 I mellowed out and know that anyone can go fast on a public road. As an adult, I've had a couple points where I was driving home ultra late, pulled into a roadside rest area to sleep, but kept violently jerking awake bc I thought cars passing by in front of me were oncoming traffic and I was asleep at the wheel
Doug Demuro said that about the 1990 BMW 750iL, which was the top-of-the-line Beemer back then at about $70K BACK THEN! He says a modestly loaded Nissan Altima has more in it than that car did!
@@JL-sm6cg yeah the auto industry certainly has it’s problems and there some outrageously priced cars.
However I think people prefer to blame the corrupt auto industry because it’s much less depressing than “we’re slowly becoming poorer because of inflation and wage stagnation”.

@@thatoneotherotherguy Agreed that it wasn’t a good value. Even still, if we trust the inflation calculation from the video, you’re getting much more car for your money these days with a base Accord.

The Fast and the Furious and Need for Speed left such an impression on me, I bought a 2003 200k+ 350Z (uncle bought it new and daily drove it for 20 years). Super clean and super stock, still. As a kid I IDOLIZED this car, and now it is mine. Follow your dreams and be persistent kids, when they come true it is GLORIOUS

If i had a dollar for everytime someone talks about the Tiburons shortcomings rather than what it does do right, I would be rich. Tiburon is 1. Very reliable. I own two. Both 6 speed manuals. 2. Cars take boost mods very well. 4. It does look very very good. 5. May not be some toyota celica or acura rsx its still a fun car to drive. Just gonna have to get that dude in blue to review a few nice tiburons 😏
@rushking19 Yea for sure.
Also they are reliable unlike Hyundai engines that came after.
I haven't thought about this car in years! I had it when it was new in 2003 when I was a sophomore in high school.
8:53 That EDIT was brilliant
VCL .... the times of old, cherished are the memories when viewed with rose tinted glasses.
This is the eMachine for cars. God bless Hyundai, Bless their hearts.
